I culled this rather long essay from bella naija's website. What are your views about a partner who spends big, just to keep up with the Jones . Please take your time to read before commenting. Thank you. I am not sure if this is just my way of ranting or if I will get any valuable advice but I really pray that I get some good advice because I have reached my breaking point. I met my husband in the United States while I was enrolled in my MBA programme. I grew up in Nigeria but not in Lagos. I moved to the US when I was a teenager. I went to college there, worked for a few years and then enrolled in my MBA programme. My husband was a different kind of Nigerian guy from the ones I had met in the US. He was sophisticated (not saying others aren’t but…) and very charming; He even dressed very differently from everyone but apart from all those superficial things, he was very grounded. When I say grounded, I mean, he treated everyone with respect and also ensured that we lived well but within our means. We got married after graduation and started our family there. We both had really great jobs in very hectic industries but we made it work. We had 2 children and all was well. During the economic boom in Nigeria a few years ago, my husband began getting offers from companies in Nigeria. We discussed the options and decided to move to Nigeria. The company that hired him was very generous with their offer. We got an apartment in Ikoyi, a signup bonus, business class travel for the whole family to move over, also our personal items shipped to Nigeria and our children’s school fees paid. My husband settled into his job and because it was a new environment for the children, I initially decided to become a stay-at-home mom. Lagos was also a big culture shock for me because the Nigeria I grew up in was very different from what I saw. Even in my children’s school, many of the moms were part of “cliques” etc…I took it within my stride but basically kept to myself. After we moved back to Nigeria, I started seeing another side of my husband. My husband had an official car from his office but insisted on buying a luxury SUV, he went on a business trip to Europe one time and came back home with a suitcase full of Saville Row suits, when I found out how much it cost, I was so shocked but he claimed it was an investment. There were so many lavish purchases e.g. a horse! If I mention the rest, most people probably will not even believe me because it was simply ridiculous. I tried to talk to him but he kept on assuring me that I should sit back and enjoy afterall, this is what we had worked so hard for all our lives. I listened to him but also took some steps such as taking control of our budgeting. By doing this, I was able to pay off our credit cards in the US, my student loans for college and my MBA and finally paid off our mortgage to ensure that we owned our house there 100%. My relationship with my husband was still great, we got along, we were friends, we communicated, all was well but I was still worried about his spending and also his group of friends. I have nothing against rich people but many of his friends seemed to live in another dimension where they had to sense of the value of money. They just spent it recklessly. 2 years ago, the company that my husband worked for closed down. It was an affiliate company of a larger conglomerate and with the economic downturn, it was no longer sustainable. My husband lost his job. He received a generous severance payment but that is when the real change occurred. The rent was due for our apartment in a few months; I advised my husband that we move to a cheaper place since the company was no longer footing the bill. He refused. I suggested that the children move to a more affordable school. He ignored that and assured me that he would get a better job soon. There were promises from his friends of political appointments (special advisor roles etc…) but nothing happened. When the time to pay our rent arrived, my husband pressured me into signing the documents to sell our house in the US to pay our rent and school fees in Nigeria! Can you imagine that? I begged and begged that he should reconsider but he accused me of not being submissive. That was how we sold a house to pay for rent and school fees. Till this day, I regret signing those documents but he put me under so much pressure and made so many promises. Since then, things have gone from bad to worse. I found a job and that is what has been sustaining my family. My husband either spends all day at home or hangs out with his friends. He has not found a new job and I know that everyone has their downtime but he still spends money like all is well. He is very moody and always accuses me of looking down on him. He does not play with the children or even attend church. He had access to our joint account where my salary was paid into and was just spending indiscriminately claiming that he was using the money for “investments”. I had to ask my office to pay me via a new account and my husband was so upset over that but I just had to bear it. For the school fees which was due last week, it took everything I had saved to pay it. I almost had to ask my retired parents for help but shame stopped me. I recently found out that he reapplied for new credit cards in the US and has run up the bills to the value of thousands of dollars. He used these credit cards to pay for trips abroad this summer. One of his friends had a bachelor party (for his second marriage o) in an exotic destination and he attended while his family is struggling. Even though I try to shield the children away from what is happening, they keep asking “what is wrong with daddy?”. Noone on the outside can see what is happening because on the surface, all seems fine and dandy. Our rent is due in a few weeks and even though I have a good job, there is no way I can afford it. Even his parents have tried to talk to him but he does not listen. I am tired. I am tempted to take the children back to the US with me and just leave him here to face the mess that he has created. I really don't know what to say, other than RIP to the dead. Methinks that lining up people and asking them to say their names before killing them is nothing short of Execution. Boko Haram? Or another group under the cover of Boko Terrorism? Your guess is as good as mine. SMH for Naija |

I used to be your typical good boy(as dating one girl) until I discovered that ladies take the Monogamist, gentle and caring boyfriend for granted. I started dating 2, then moved on to 3. The truth is that, each of my girlfriends feel that she is the most loved and each wants to take me away from the others... About money... Believe it or not, I spend far less now, than when I was keeping only one girlfriend. Though I feel guilty sometimes, but the truth is that girls don't appreciate the GOOD GUYS. |

I go with Joeydozzy on this one. Op there is no way your girlfriend will know that her Asthma attack is around the corner. Because even before she realises what is happening the attack would have come. She just want to tell you that she has Asthma. This is not about I-know-it-all, am writing as one whose mother has bronchitis(which is related to asthma) and have a cousin who suffers from asthma. |
A well thought post. But instead of using a pet, like you said why not use a human being. I am seriously thinking of getting married in now(maybe next year). This is what I did. In january or February during the fuel subsidy strike, I invited 3 of my cousins over to my place and they stayed for a month plus. My budget for the month went up a bit. Later two left and I'm currently staying with one now, for almost 3 months and counting. I call this pre-marriage practical. |
When I was growing up as a kid, I looked up to my Dad as a epitome of what a family should be. A Loving husband to the wife and a caring father to the children. I still believe he never cheated on my mum. But these days I get scared thinking of how am going to cope, when I get married. Not that am a flirt, but the temptations are just too strong in our generation. I believe with the help of God and a determination not to stray, I will make. Cheating on your wife (or eating your cake and having it) is the fastest way to destroy peace in your home. |
Saw Maze Couture with Linda. Wow.. Am really happy for my Naija youths who gives other young people the morale to excel |
Am suprised Lagosians are just getting a feel of what people across the Niger have been suffering since!! Just so you know we have been buying fuel for 120 /litre ever before the sallah holiday and you can only get fuel at N97/litre at major marketers (with very long queues). We haven't complained cos we have since been used to buying petroluem products far above pump price, and that was the major reason why peeps at these side didn't join Lagosians in the Subsidy strike protest and not reason because GEJ was our tribes man like many people were made to believe!! Tell me why I should go and protest for fuel subsidy when I know I won't enjoy it??
Here in the East we have been buying fuel at 110 or 115 or 120, for a very long time. Major marketers hardly sell their product during the day. It's either very early in the morning or very late in the evening and not up to 2hrs. I believe the 97 naira pump price is for major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, etc |
Am surprised nobody has said what I have been thinking since I started reading this thread. Odunnu, believe me, this same family will Label you a wicked woman in the future. If they don't say it to your face, they will mention it to someone who will tell. Right from when I was a kid, my parents accommodated all sorts. But after my dad died, very few stood by us... The people gained most, were the very people who did my mum the most injustice... Spreading wild tales about the poor woman. After some years, we the children survived and are doing relatively well. They want become a part of us again. Odunnu, you can take it from me, that family will not appreciate you. So it's better you take the advice of people here and really stamp your feet down. Say NO next time they come around, no need trying to soften the NO. |
Royalty1: For all those accusing the friend, here is the full story as reportred by punch. It sheds more light on the whole issue. Now, this second account of the story seems plausible... @Naptu, I read kemifemi's account and that is why I said ALMOST everyone... @stormm, keep laying curses on your head and the head of your generations. May the dead RIP, and may justice be meted out to the killers. |
I noticed that almost everyone who has responded and said they have had an encounter with the NPF, always mention some kind of prior exchange. Am yet to read of someone who says that the police drove up to him/her and opened fire without any form of arguement or physical encounter. For the avoidance of doubt I have also been a victim of the NPF brutality(you can visit the thread about police brutality and read my account). If things had gone bad that day(cos I almost fought the policeman whom I had an encounter with) they would simply have labelled me a "kidnapper" because it was at the height of the kidnapping era in Abia State. In Ugo's case, we are meant to believe that there was no form of arguement, neither was he accosted in any form. The "drunken NPF" just drove up to where he and his "friend" where waiting for a cab and shot Ugo twice. I wish Stormm and some of his other friends and family, the KC old boys etc will set aside their emotions and ask some insightful question. May Ugo's soul RIP. My heart really goes out to his widow. This is one of those stories you hear and you will never wish to go outside your house, for fear of the unknown. |
Okay... Here is the bitter truth for you.. If all you have to go on is this story of drunken policemen, then I'm sorry there is nothing we Nigerians nor the real Police can do for you, KC boys or the family of the deceased.. Go bury your dead.. Next time, tell your other friends to get more infomation the next time another van of 15 drunken policemen shoots them.. I hope you are satisfied.. Like the I.G said, 'It wasn't us'... Now go get yourself a bulletproof vest and bury your friend.
Okija, no mind that guy. He wants ram the story down our throats. Because the "friend" in question is based in UK, then we should just take his account of events without questioning. Sometimes you just wonder what kind of education people claim to have received. The event of that night may or may not have been carried out by a group of drunken policemen... What some of us are saying that, in this type of case let's put sentiment aside and ask certain questions... And someone is somewhere laying a non-existent curse on people... |

stormm: I think folks here should be careful in their contributions. Ugo is a personal friend of about a year and people should be cautious before spewing their gibberish on people or events they know nothing about. Ugo is a young man that recently finished his Msc in Unilag. He got a job for which he should resume in October 2012 after several months of being without a jobSo because some people" think the story sounds somehow", you wish them death. May you be killed 5 days after your wedding if you ever doubted the authenticity of a story. |
I believe Okija and some of us who have said that this initial account is not trying to absolve the police of the blame. Or that the NPF is not capable of doing what is being alleged in this story. What we are simply saying is that a lot of unanswered questions abound in the tale. (If I were the "friend" I will be very scared right now). I have been wondering whether this could be just another case of random killing by the police. But there are certain coincidence in the tale that makes it hard to believe. Ugo got wedded on the 15th of Sept and five days later he was killed by supposedly drunk policemen. (Number one coincidence) I know that by 10pm in Lag, people will still be moving around as if it were still 6pm elsewhere... So after the shootings I believe that it was not only the DPO and a handful of police and the "friend" who came back to the crime scene. But this story (I believe backed up by the desire of KC boys to get justice) is being spread to the public as the authentic version of what transpired that night. My question is whose version of the story our we reading? My guess is that it is the version of the "friend's" account of what happened that night. (I believe that this is the second coincidence) Number three coincidence is, why didn't the supposed NPF in the van at least fire at the "friend"? Or was it only one policeman that was with an AK in the van? Ok, maybe they were fleeing the scene. Why didn't the friend also flee the scene and maybe find his way home. Or flee the scene to a safe distance and start making calls. Why come back to the crime scene? Why didn't the DPO and his men arrest the principal witness, When he came back? Did the friend follow the second batch of policemen to the hospital? I gathered that there was another general hospital around Gbagad, so why Ikeja Gen hospital? Please am not pointing any fingers, either at the "friend" or the NPF. But there are simple so many unanswered questions and coincidence in this story. I find it hard to believe that this initial account is actually what happened that night. |
My condolences to his widow, family and friends.. May he find mercy and rest in the afterlife.. That said, I'm sorry but this case go hard to investigate except someone who knows the group of drunken police men comes up to confess.. The witness has no names, no plate number, no patrol number, no way to identify them whatsoever.. Also, how do we know that they were really the Police and not a bunch of criminals joy riding in a Police van? Thirdly, why should we believe that friend who seems to be the only witness to the shooting? What stops him from pumping a few shots into his chest and blame in on drunken Policemen!? Why wasn't the friend shot as well!? If the police where out for a shooting spree, why waste two (AK-47 rounds) on one person shot at close range when if properly aimed, could have kill both men with one bullet?! This could also be a case of an assasination, if so, who would want him dead!? TWo AK-47 rounds at close range is definitely overkill.. All I want to say is there are so many unanswered questions, so let's be careful when throwing words at the Police.. Remember, the Police is your friend..
Sentiment aside, I was wondering this same thing... What if the "friend" set up a Hit job on Ugo... Afterall they were both standing together, waiting for a taxi... How do we know that the police guys were really drunk? Were did the other police guys come out from? Why, didn't the second batch of police guys who took ugo to the hospital, arrest his "friend" So many unanswered questions.... May the dead RIP, and may God grant his Widow and family the fortitude to bear the loss... Am really getting scared of Nigeria... |
afam4eva: Most of the places i went to in Aba were just like these pictures you posted. I was looking for the location of these atrocious pictures that i've been seeing but couldn't find any. I even had to ask one Aba boy and he told me to go to Ariaria.Afam, yes some places poses a semblance of normalcy. But those place are areas where the minutest percentage of Aba citizenry drive through every day. Am talking about places like Ekenna street(even though it has started developing huge pot holes); The road leading from Aba north LG council to Uche street, the PZ road, the road leading to teaching hospital off Aba owerri road(also it has started developing huge pot holes) Immacualte heart road(even though the junction is very bad right now). Am sure it was one of these areas that you must have been through... Take it from me, Aba major roads are in a deplorable condition(that is putting it mildly). |
sleekcm: Let me just share this briefly. I took a bus from Aba to Lagos on Tuesday and there was a journalist who came on inspection/fact-finding mission to Abia State in that same bus. He made some mind-blowing revelations. I never knew the problem of Abia was that big. T.A Orji is a major reason why Abia is backwards but he isn't the only one. It was T.A who made Orji Uzor Kalu governor. He rigged him in - when he was Abia INEC chairman - or whatever they called it back then. It was T.A who introduced Orji Uzor Kalu to Okija Shrine things. T.A also taught Orji how to be mean. It's only natural that Orji Uzor Kalu had to show appreciation by rewarding him with Abia State for 4 years. Jonathan ensured he came back through massive rigging using the shameless traditional Ezes' in the state. Now, this journalist alleges that there is a list of about 150 prominent Nigerians that T.A Orji and his army of bandits pays monthly to keep quiet about what's happening in the state. Top on this list is no other than the first lady - Dame Patience Jonathan- who is paid an unbelievable #300million/month.Most of the things you wrote are not just mere whisperings of market women/ rumuors (though it will be hard to prove) but the truth about T.A. Orji's administration. The ship deal is the reason why so many workers/civil servants in the employ of Abia state have not been paid for up to 3 months now. The election story of 1999 is just an open secret well known to anybody who pays attention to Abia state politics. Of course Mrs Dame Patience Jonathan is the Ada di ora nma of Abia state... So I would say that story about paying may not just be a wild rumour...(Though I have not heard about that one ohhh) But like I said... Abians will survive the rule of T.A. Orji |

Abagworo: I started taking pictures from alaoji through Aba town hall to Osisioma. About 40 pictures. That was last year May. I've not been to Aba since then, so if the roads are worse off, I cannot know unless you guys show us.My dear, the pictures you took even as of last year is very deceitful. I believe the first one is after Aba town hall, cos I can see the rotary monument near Union Bank. The second, third and last pictures are the same road, that is Aba Owerri road, just before Ahia Umungasi. Like I said, even as of last year the same roads you took their pictures have started detoriating. T.A. Orji is deliberately punishing Aba people cos they refused to support him during the 2011 election run up. But it is well... Cos his case will be worse off than that of Ibori... Abia, nay Aba, survived the regime of mamacracy, they survived the rain of terror of the mafia boys in the late 1990's, they survived the kidnapping era of the deadly Osisi ka nkwu... They will also survive the wicked administration of T.A. Orji |
Abagworo: Why all the curse? I actually went into Aba from Alaoji and came out from Osisioma. I took pictures with my phone and did not see the bad spots. If they are spoilt now, why can't you correct me by posting pictures rather than behaving like an illiterate. I have always condemned Orji but I cannot lie about what I saw.You came into Aba from Alaoji?... You did not pass Ariaria/Enyimba...you didn't pass PortHarcourt junction...your car/driver ddn't take one way... Ok ooo... Then you " came out from" Osisioma... At Osisioma junction you ddn't witness all the glaring DEATH TRAPS... Am sorry to say, that it wasn't Aba that you visited. |
afam4eva: Someone just takes a picture of a particular place in Aba and uploads it as a true representation of Aba. Yes, we know Aba is bad but not this bad and not everywhere. When i went to Aba 3 years ago, i was trying very hard to find the dirty Aba i kept hearing and seeing all over the internet but i couldn't find any. Even Ogbor hill that seems like a middle to lower-class neigbourhood is not that bad.Three years ago should be 2009... You should visit aba again... Then you will know if the picture posted is true or not... The picture posted by OP, is just one area of Aba... If you don't find at least 5 or more major roads like that... Then always call me liar any time you come across my posts on NL |
What's really wrong with some people in this NL forum... Being successful doesn't mean that you have to be old... I am not a close pal of Linda, but I know her age range is surely 31or 32 or 33. Why? Cos she was my class mate in UNILAG. And yes am also in that age range and equally doing well for myself. Please you guys should stop hating, it's not good for your HEALTH. |
It has always been about the oil. Every fight, every power tussle, all political gingoism... from the farthest places in the south-South to the remotest hut in the Deserts of the North. Gen Gowon wanted to defeat his peer(Ojukwu) in the Nig-Biafran war and he was desperate enough to ceed the Bakassi peninsula to the our African neighbours. I do not blame the Camourounians. No. A gift like the bakassi is hard to reject. It's about time that we (the masses) come to terms with the way our leaders think...Oil.... Even this guy OUK does not give a f**k about the Nigerian masses... it is all about the oil and they can go to any learnt to safe guard this Black Gold. |
someone said it before that even those that saw the girl in Festac town will ne arrested. we dey wait for more arrests. |

Chi n' enye nwa, nwa bu onyinye Chukwu The Irony of this is that, you see most of the very rich couples having only 2 or 3 or 4 kids and the very poor couples breeding as if they were competing in an olympreek (olympic) game. I believe it is only one son in the qaudrplets, for that I say congratulation Ma. God has really granted your hearts desire. This is a clear case of tempting nature... God in His infinite wisdom gave you 1,2,3,4,5 (I believe beautiful gals). But you were asking God to please EMBARASS you with more blessings. So why is she crying for help from the govt and the society. On a serious note, women are mostly the architect of their woes... After 2 or 3 gals, why didn't the woman just give up.
