Most commenters have no clue what American police force face on a daily basis. You mix the following factors together: Abundance of guns, drugs and overall sense of entitlement and you get the picture. Cops are being killed for serving a warrant, a routine traffic stop and so on. Places like Chicago, New York, Miami are death traps for cops yet we think a cop with less than 20 seconds to react will be able to stop someone charging at him or her with a weapon without using a gun or with pin-point accuracy? We seem to think that most of these cops are robots without human emotions of fear or anxiety.

Apart from police officer safety, if the officer missed or the assailant got out and ended up attacking an innocent civilian, most Americans would call for their heads. It's a lose-lose situation and perhaps the best solution is tackling mental illness and reducing the amount of guns in circulation, unfortunately neither falls into high priority with the American political system.

Unfortunate cases like this most times are the result of poor police trainings than racism but we live in a world where blacks are being told the same white police officers who come to their rescue on a dialy basis are all racists and evil. The problem is partly because of poor police training and partly because 52% of violent crimes are committed by whites while 48% are committed by blacks. This would seem normal but when you factor in that blacks are just 14% of the U.S population yet they commit 48% of the violent crimes, you start to realize why more blacks are likely to be arreested or killed by the police. Blacks in America must rise up and change the culture, change the culture of drugs, gangs, violence and dirty money.

They are entitled to public support, yet you don't want their need for help publicized? Isn't this counterproductive? If you ask those celebrities that needed help, if they prefer to die in sickness or to let the world know they need help. I'm sure only the crazy ones would prefe to die. We disagree to agree. My parents weren’t wealthy although they also weren’t poor but I already had projects I was working on as a youth corp member independent of parents or friends which made my reliance on the the youth corp funding quite minimal. I used those projects as an opportunity to move to naij and undertake the youth corp program as I was made to understand that it was a kind of work permit for nigerians who had completed a college degree. There were a substantial number of youth corp members I knew who were working temporarily in McKinsey, GE, oando, Thomson Reuters.... They were also in the middle class . So yea youth corp members can be classed depending on the opportunities they have as youth corp members .Your standards are high though (10M in the piggy bank lol).
Average youth corper is not working temporarily for Oando or Reuters, just acknowledge that your parents assisted you in getting the necessary exposure and resources to move above the average youth corper. An average youth corper in Nigeria has not traveled the world, an average youth corper is not working on mulitple projects. This is the reality unfortunately, so if you only use your experience or the experience of a few friends you know then you are not being objective enough. While you might not have 10 million in your bank account, when you calculate your ticket fare, the amount you spend on entertainment, hotels etc, you've probably spent close to that. 10 million for middle class is actually quite achievable in Nigeria due to so many deals beyond the average salary but then again that's just my point of view so we can agree to disagree like you said smiley smiley smiley

I believe there is an expanding middle class in Nigeria . Most of the young people you find living in VGC, Lekki , Oniru and agungi are in the middle class. I could afford all these things you’ve mentioned even when I was a youth corp member with short term contract positions here and there. I maintained irokoTv and Netflix subscriptions, I ate out at least once a day , partied almost every weekend, watched soccer at lounges and went on vacation about twice annually. By the time I started working full time I had been to most of the cities in Europe which was probably one of the cultures in learnt in the west (vacation every now and then). I also had a car before I started working in naij. But I never had 10 million naira in my account or owned a house . I believe I was already in the middle class (by Nigerian standard ) as a youth corp member with temporary freelancing jobs here and there. One of the contributors even went as far as classifying Dangote as a potential middle class in west lol . Africa’s wealthiest capitalist cannot be a middle class citizen anywhere in the world . I’ve found it easier to save money and still live well in Nigeria than USA. Nigeria is cheap and I don’t need as much money as an American will need to live decently due to variation in cost of living in both societies. The American culture has got its citizens more individualistic than most Africans . Consequently Americans tend to spend on themselves and only themselves . Most American kids have their college education funded via financial aids even if their parents could afford it. On the other hand Nigerians ( both middle and upper class)?spend a substantial amount of their income giving out to relatives, friends, church or hosting one event or the other. Difference in culture explains that not the absence of middle class . No society lacks a middle class .
You're still confusing yourself. I never said there was no middle class in Nigeria, in fact my analysis proves otherwise. Anyone can be considered middle or upper class when parents are still funding them. As a youth corper, I doubt you supported yourself fully hence you had no class. Even most of the ones living in VGC, Lekki and so on are depending on their parents' incomes until they establish themselves fully. Based on your own analysis, traveling most of Europe, going on vacations, you had a car, ate out almost everyday and NETFLIX, I would say you are part of the newer generation whose parents were already in the wealthy classification and that influenced your lifestyle. An average Nigerian does not indulge in most of the things you mentioned on a regular basis and most definitely not as a youth corper....lol

Some people have never seen anything good in Nigeria and will go to any length to put down the country. Don't get me wrong I'm not immune to the challenges but going by your contribution one can also say 70% of the world lives in poverty. While I don't know much about the OP I can deduce that he/she is one of the numerous Nigerians who equates money to everything. Let's assume you dont know . More than 50% of american adults don't have up to $5,000 in savings or investments. OP talks about cars (possessing 2 cars) which further shows that he/she knows not much outside the facet of Nigeria where cars are one of the parameters used in judging the wellness/comfort ability/class. In first and second world nations ( USA/Canada/UK/Germany/RSA/Singapore) cars are marketed all over the media with all kinds of offers (zero interest for six months/ 5 year monthly payment plan/ leasing options/ trade in options and other financing deals). With $1,000 pay-down I can drive a new car out of the lot after agreeing to some terms with the dealership. You don't own the car till you finish paying for it which can take as long as 5 years in some case. Two to three consecutive default payments could see the dealership get a court order to repossess the car. In Nigeria most people pay-down the full cost of the car (100%) which is one of the reasons used cars are more prevalent coupled with the high cost of importing a car.
On the other hand, I have not met any american during my 4 years stint as a college student who bought their home out rightly without a mortgage plan. They dont own these homes till after 10-15-35 years (depending on the payment plan). With the middle class standard you have set I'm keen to know how many of these cars and houses you have acquired and how much you have pilled up in your account. I have lived in two first world countries and have visited a couple of others dominated by the middle class and most of the inhabitants of these countries dont even have $10,000 in savings. These countries are far more expensive than Nigeria. My housing cost about ten years ago in a shared room is more than what I pay today as rental in Lekki and I am more comfortable (in terms of housing) now than then. A friend of mine rented a 2-bed apartment for about 5.2M per annum somewhere in victoria island. After 6 years he moved back to USA and was paying $4,250 monthly for a one bed apartment in midtown manhattan. He didn't own the house and he had one car. By your definition he is in the lower class but yet he moved to NYC to attend business school and still lived a middle class life in USA with the resources earned here in Nigeria. May be you should also move to a first world country and see if you cant fit into the middle class immediately.
I was born in Nigeria grew up in Mushin, went to the university in Ogun state but I've also lived in America for almost a decade now. I have multiple properties and while I am considered middle class in America, in Nigeria I'm way beyond what anyone would call middle class.

My analysis comes from the point of view of working Nigerians and what it takes to live comfortable in Nigeria. It is from the lense of a Nigerian hence the standard abroad does not apply. An average mortgage in America is about $200k, that is about 70 million Niaira and you're right most Americans cannot afford that outright hence mortgage but you have to keep in mind Americans are also inherently more lavish than Nigerians. They spend on unnecessary things from more than 5 tv streaming subscriptions, to making sure they eat 3 imes a day even when they are not hungry. Let's not forget every holiday they spend money to buy things they don't really need and most of them could care less about saving for their children or grandchildren. Middle class in Nigeria can NEVER have the same definition as middle class in the USA or even the UK, if we don't stop comparing ourselves with standards set for abroad we would always fall short. I make about $100,000 a year after taxes and if I spent like the average American I would not be able to save 1/4th of what I save now, which I find ridiculous! My savings have allowed me to invest in Nigeria, if I simply invested in the U.S, I would have to wait till I'm over 60 to start enjoying my retirement.

Hence my question

WHAT IS THE % OF NIGERIANS THAT FIT INTO THAT BRACKET?
Our population is around 200 million, workforce is about 40% of that = 80 million. Of those 80 million about 70% are underemployed or struggling entrepreneurs, leaving about 21 million. This means 21 million or 10% of the population could potentially be middle class, when you add yahoo boys, low level politicians and other scammers, we might be looking at 12-15% of the population.
Politics › Re: Middle Class In Nigeria- Is It Still In Existence? by abbey621(m): 7:23pm On May 02, 2019
This is the way I see it, if you have your own house that you built or bought, 2 or more vehicles and have over 10 million in your account, you are middle class. Anything below this is lower class or average. For you to be considered truly wealthy in Nigeria, you must own more than one house and have over 100 million in cash or financial investments like bonds, fixed deposit, TB, etc.

A guy that visits prostitutes is the first to slam these women
We live in a world where politicians that patronises prostitutes are still the ones making laws to Ban it
Also law enforcement officers that are meant to preserve the laws are asking for sex in exchange for release.
Where someone dating a married man would slam another woman that marries a married man
Where a woman that sleeps around with many men or a man that's sleeps around with many women will still come and slam these women

In the end nobody holy pass. If you are without sin cast the first stone. Who am I to judge them? I don't know their story, I don't know how they got there , I don't have a job for them.

I am not promoting prostitution but sometimes we just need to remove our judge coat and see humanity that needs help. If you read Maslow's Hierarchy of needs you will understand that these business will always thrive.

Who am I to judge ? I am just a tourist , I have had the opportunity to visit 95 percent of tourist site in Lagos and also had rare opportunity to interact with some of these women , behind the name we call them some of them are good people better than those who we don't label prostitutes
Prostitution, running a brothel or clubs where illicit sex is practiced are technically illegal under the Nigerian Constitution and criminal codes. So anyone patronizing prostitutes can be arrested by the authorities. It's less about judgment and more about legality. We condemn armed robbers and kidnappers, we condemn ritualist and even someone that steals food just to feed his or her family yet we should be comfortable with a woman serving her body as a meal to the general populace? If the authorities simply did their jobs and enforced the law there would be no need for this discussion because just like buying drugs or humans.....Do so at your own peril, no one would judge you until you are caught.

Take your L like the boy you are and lay low. If you bothered to read my initial post slowly, you would realize I'm talking about the spread and encouragement of homosexuality not the creation. No one can speak of creation because historically we don't have all the facts. What we can speak to is the normalization and the propaganda aimed at spreading homosexuality. U.S does not support homosexuality yet it now allows marriages between same sex couples? It does not support but LGBTQ+ is now a mandatory class in some public schools! You are very stupid to think homosexuality originated from a particular part of the world, shows how ignorant you are, do you realize in Igbo land a woman can marry another woman with full traditional rites tell me is it west that's influencing this? Hausas for many decades have a cross dressing and homosexuality culture, how much influence do you think west has on A Muslim dominated region? I can give you many instances of homosexuality in africa pre colonialism, you are just ignorant, the inbreeding you talk about is outlawed in most western nations how are they influencing it? in Africa for many decades we have had cases of inbreeding with communities punishing the people involved but your small mind tells you its started happening cos west, the western influence you talk about mostly ends in internet, the aged men in their 60s to take their daughters to bed you think they understand and know what west is pushing or not, if you don't understand issues just shut up, before now how many inbreeding cases do you think know? is it because we have internet now and news easily gets spread then you feel inbreeding is something new and what's difference btwn polygamy and baby daddy? back as 50s many women kept co husbands something you feel is alien to your so called culture, one thing I blame west for is brainwashing you to think your own culture is a vice brought by them, I mean your probably form a proud christian and born again while thinking your traditional religions are evil
Like I said before, low IQ is the root cause of your problem. If you had any functioning brain cell and you could actually do a little research, you would notice every culture had the spirit of homosexuality but allmost all had some laws against it. The Igbo and Hausa cultures that you mentioned had laws against it, it was never promoted. Promotion and encouragement of homosexuality started from the West. The term “homosexuality” itself originated with Karl-Maria Kertbeny, a German journalist, in an 1869 pamphlet that argued for the repeal of Prussian sodomy laws. In the scientific field, researchers like Alfred Kinsey suggested that homosexuality was a natural variation of human sexuality. Starting in the early to mid twentieth century, gay bars became a fixture of many American cities, providing a gathering place for people to meet partners, engage in otherwise frowned-upon forms of gender expression or dress, or simply interact with like-minded people in other spaces. These and more has led to the widespread acceptance of homosexuality, the propaganda into cultures known to resist it and the abolishment of many laws against it. If your atom sized brain cannot comprehend what I'm saying, I suggest you leave the discussion to higher intellects!

He never said what you've understood, abbey621. The keys phrase is the following: "If a society deems 11 year olds as capable moral agents it means they have determined that 11 yr olds can make moral decisions."

Who are the "society" that "deems 11 year olds as capable moral agents"? Would have been the more appropriate question. Is it not you, father of 11 year olds, who would be deeming? And don't forget that after society deems, you can still deem different under your own roof. But then, you are talking "sexual abuse" when my Lord is talking about consensual, as in where the 11 year old parties involved have agreed to do a thing after we their parents in the society have deemed them capable of giving consent. I don't think anyone is deemed capable of giving consent where "sexual abuse" is concerned though, whatever the age.

Over in UK, sex education is taught in primary school where children learn what inappropriate behaviour is and what to do if they are victims of it. They are also taught of the different family structures that exist in response to schoolmates who have two daddies or two mummies, or where daddy is a woman and mummy a man. Despite all that education, UK has not deemed you a capable moral agents until you are 16.

Personally, I would not deem a 25 year old capable of moral agency or of giving consent, but at some point my deeming becomes irrelevant if I don't teach my child what it should do and leave it to society to deem for my 11 year old for me.

I had to say because you either missed my Lords point or......
It's either you and your lord have comprehension problems or you purposely like to argue. Your entire epistle can be summed up using one clever sentence: Consent is irrelevant when it comes to morality.

My initial statement that brought about the entire ergument is this, "Do you know most pedophiles can't help themselves? They love kids romantically, why should they be denied their feelings and right to love? Did you know some people are now marrying their pets and having carnal knowledge of them? These people also claim their right to love, is it normal? I disagree with bullying but don't disagree with the right to dislike their lifestyle. I don't disagree with the right to distance myself from them."

In which your lord responded with this, "As long as it involves a person who cannot legally give consent then the persons feelings of attraction are invalidated. No matter how you claim to love a girl or find her irresistible, the moment you have sex with her without her consent you have committed a crime. Consent is the key to these issues which is why BDSM practitioners are not legally frowned upon."

We have proven so far through our dialogue that consent might mean a lot to legality but when it comes to morality it is USELESS! I have proven that pedophiles can have consent due to egal age for sexual activity being 11 to 16 in most countries but morally it is HOGWASH. So what makes homosexuality acceptable according to Western agenda and Pedophilia frowned upn aggressively? So far neither you or your incessant lord is able to answer this basic philosophical question. Quite frankly, this merry-go-round is getting nauseating!

Consent is not meaningless in morality. If that is your view then you are immoral as they come. Only capable moral agents are able to give consent and that is how we determine which persons are that capable moral agent. If a society deems 11 year olds as capable moral agents it means they have determined that 11 yr olds can make moral decisions. For you to say that consent is irrelevant only shows your own immorality because you are deny capable moral agents the right to exercise their own ability. You want to be a determinant of what moral agents should do. Tyrants are so made.
You're spewing trash! If a society determines that an 11 year old is old enough to consent to sexual intercourse/abuse then it is morally right? Yet you disagree when I said homosexuals and pedophiles should be looked at under the same lenses. You just admitted that an 11 year old can give a full grown adult consent to be touched sexually, so what's your argument again? If homosexuals are jailed in Nigeria and pedophiles are jailed in America, which one is morally acceptable than the other?
