My family was brought to America by a French planter named Alcindor, who came here from Trinidad in the 18th century. My people were Yoruba, and their culture survived slavery...

Why was his name changed to Alcindor?

Yourbas rely mostly on oral history till date.
His name was not changed to Alcindor, he was born that way. He was born in 1947 in New York City. Slavery ended in the U.S around 1865, almost 90 years ago, so his father more than likely was also not a slave.

are we talking slaves and region they were taken? or Immigrantshuh

my advice to you is stop shifting the goal post in an argument... it does not make you look as smart as you think... you mentioned a slave descendant and then proceed to post a link on immigrants...common men!!!
I suggest you look before you leap and stop this tomfoolery! This is what you responded to and highlighted in bold:

Nigeria being the most popular and dominating demographics of Africans in the USA
So what are you arguing here? Not once did I mention slaves to you, I'm talking about present demographics. Wake up!

My great grandfather was stolen and sold abroad as a slave in the 18th century but he still managed to find his way back to Nigeria.

How did he know his origin and came back home through the help of a slave merchant?

At least, you have agreed that 10% knows their origin and Abdul Jabber's father who went to America in the 18th century belongs to this category of those who knew their heritage.
But Jabber's father was not a slave. If he went to the US in the 18th century, that is the year 1900 and beyond, slavery ended already(1865). The more likely scenario was that Jabber's great grandfather was brought to the U.S as a slave and the stories were passed down from generations but where does Trinidad & Yoruba correlate?

Quote from the horses mouth

Abdul-Jabbar has spoken about the thinking that was behind his name change when he converted to Islam. He stated that he was "latching on to something that was part of my heritage, because many of the slaves who were brought here were Muslims. My family was brought to America by a French planter named Alcindor, who came here from Trinidad in the 18th century. My people were Yoruba, and their culture survived slavery... My father found out about that when I was a kid, and it gave me all I needed to know that, hey, I was somebody, even if nobody else knew about it. When I was a kid, no one would believe anything positive that you could say about black people. And that's a terrible burden on black people, because they don't have an accurate idea of their history, which has been either suppressed or distorted."
90% of African Americans born in America don't really know their heritage. Where does Trinidad & Yoruba mix? Here's another quote from him "My forebears were Yoruba people, from present day Nigeria". He said he learnt this from his father and he learned from his father but there is no proof. Nigeria being the most popular and dominating demographics of Africans in the USA, it's no wonder DNA analysis and research shows basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabar and the famed Harvard historian, Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. are descendants of Yorubas but how confident are you in DNA research that shows that a person is 10 to 15% Nigerian and likely Yoruba?

Abortion should only be legal in certain cases, e.g , rape, health complications or mental instability. You should not get to have an abortion just because you don't want to be responsible for the consequences of your actions. You should not get abortion just because your partner does not want a child. If death is your reward for trying to get rid of a baby then so be it! I have no sympathy for such people!

Huawei are not facing ban on the global market.. They are only facing ban in US and no other country nor even US allies.. Did you consider the losses in the share prices of all the companies involved and not just revenue.. Huawei project they will loose 30 billion over two years, brodcom alone will lose 2 billion this year (4 billion in 2 years) as a result of the ban, Verizon and some other company will have to pay Huawei for patent infringement, that runs into billions of dollars which is a potential income to Huawei. we haven't talked about how much Google, arm and every other company banning Huawei will loose over two years.. You are not even factoring the impact of American companies not just loosing a customer but the threat that this customer could become their competitor as a result of the ban. You said the companies will have tax break. So is America government not loosing revenue as a result of the tax break.. He just did the same to farmers over 16 billion because of the trade war with China. President Donald Trump announced a $16 billion aid package for farmers suffering from tariffs, the second farm bailout in less than a year. As the U.S.-China trade war continues so how many sectors will he give tax relief?

The phone division is not even Huawei's Forte. The telecommunication equipment is what gives Huawei the bulk of their revenue and even the united state can't do without it as at now..
You're mixing apples with oranges, stop jumping all over the place. Even if you magically combined all the losses of those companies you mentioned, they won't still reach $30 billion. Apple for example will get the tax breaks, whether it hurts or does not hurt U.S government is not the point here. The lawsuit against Verizon is $1 billion and that's chicken change for the largest mobile carrier in the U.S.

Finally to finish you off, if you think 1/3 of the world's GDP banning Huawei is no big deal then you really need to educate yourself on the global economy, we have markets where it is a must to exist or you risk going bankrupt, American & Asian are two of the biggest, unless the Chinese government completely bans Apple, I don't see how you can compare their loss to Huawei's. Furthermore, you seem to be defending Huawei yet the company is already admitting to the devastating blows the ban will have on them. Abi you know more than the company itself? Perhaps you're a major Shareholder.....lol

nobody said they were not going to loose some sails.. Have you checked the impact on other American companies.. The are already sueing Verizon on intellectual property theft over one billion dollars could be claimed, Qualcomm, arm etc have also had to reduce their sales projection due to the ban stock prices of American companies have plummet.. Or you haven't heard Google and other companies clamoring for the stop in ban.. They are all loosing.
Yet none of the companies you mentioned will lose close to $30 billion. None of the companies you mentioned are facing restrictions on the global market. Losses by Apple(7 billion) and other American companies will be offset by tax breaks and global revenue while losses by Huawei could potentially bankrupt them, this is not my opinion, read the link provided and hear the words right from the horses mouth!

That may be true, but it was a sight better than Army rule...

If we were still under army rule, AIT would have been closed for months for subversion, and a decree would have been passed legalizing it.

And this website would have been closed down too.

This democracy is flawed, corrupt, and a mess. But I don't want to go back to those days of rule by decree.

Even democracies like the UK and the US used to be very corrupt once upon a time. That they are not as corrupt as they used to be is because their citizens stood up and worked hard to get there.

Nigerians just go and vote and sit down and wait for the sharing of the money. That's not how democratic rule or economic development works
You didn't answer the question, is life today better than under military regime? Just not for yourself but Nigeria as a whole? What's the use of democracy if we are still not better off than the military era? You made exampels of the US and the UK but I can categorically tell you that the U.S citizens never witnessed half the corruption Nigerians have been witnessing since 1999. Even when they had the Great Depression and 70% of the ppulation was poor, the government within 2 years came out with the "NEW DEAL" which turned things around for the better.

You ask the Nigerian people to vote so that they can change their situation, after voting you're still asking to march and demand more. Let me tell you this, no be person wey chop go have strength to march? Want to know why most Nigerians have lost faith in democracy? Look no further than every international report out there that puts Nigeria has the capital of poverty, look no further than the millions of lives lost since 1999 to religious and political extremists. My problem is that he and many other Nigerians kept quiet and allowed the Army run over is for another five years.

Indeed, most Nigerians allowed themselves to think it was a tribal thing and as a result we lost our chance to get back to democracy for another five years.

Mind you, Abiola was not the Messiah. But if we Nigerians had been courageous enough to realize that democracy is not about who wins, not about all your tribal issues, etc... maybe history would be different.

I don't like PDP or APC. I'm dissatisfied with this democratic epoch. But I won't support any coup or attempt to subvert it.

I may be selfish and arrogant to say this, but I wish Nigerians thought like that too. Maybe we would have avoided things like the civil war and the pogroms if five majors decided to go into politics and fight on the electoral battlefield instead of organising a coup. Maybe we would have been a democratic country for much longer. It won't have been perfect, but it would have been better than one man army rule.
For all the democracy, what has it gotten us? Can you honestly say that life for the average Nigerian has gotten better now when compared to the military era? Democracy as it is practiced today in Nigeria is a farce, less than 1% of the population sharing trillions of Naira while the 99% struggle to break free from poverty.

Unfortunately for most ignorant Democrats and advocates of socialism is that free things have to be funded and raising taxes arbitrarily is antithetical to free market principles.

That is true but don't you think it's the Southern Strategy that worsened issues for the GOP? And with every notable black conservative (which is declining IMO) being termed "Uncle Tom", it won't be easy for blacks to be conservative. That said, if we're to judge blacks' love for the Democratic Party by its awuff policies, why are Asian Americans (who IMO are more prosperous and hard working than blacks aka model minority) huge supporters of the Demoractic Party? Based on their characteristics, one will expect them (Asian Americans) to be Republicans.

On the other hand, the GOP has to develop policies to attract more blacks and other minorities as their traditional white supporters base is declining based on birth rates.
Contrary to popular beliefs, Asians are also minorities in America hence they are likely to fall for the party that promises a path to citizenship. Furthermore we all know that the party that controls the media or the narrative will always be more popular, this is where liberalism wins. There is no Southern strategy within the GOP, it's all perception generated by fake news. Trump won Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, the only Southern strategy that exists is that in the minds of people who allow others to think for them. You are right tho the GOP does have a problem with minorities, they need to stop being boring and offer some form of goodies otherwise they won't always have another Trump to bail them out.

Just want to ask. Are you a Republican? Why are there few black conservatives aka Republicans in the US?
I'm an independent, both parties have failed the people. There are few black conservatives because true black nature is anything but conservative. It's no secret that as blacks we love flashy things, we are moved by quick success and freedom. So when one party promise prosperity, free government assistance, free path to citizenship and the other preaches responsibility, working hard, obeying the law; tell me which one do you think our black Americans would choose?

Furthermore did you know that the Democratic party was the party that encouraged slavery and was against equal rights for colored people? Did you know that the Republican party was the party of Lincoln, the party that ended slavery? When you ask the media and all the liberal fear mongers, they'll tell you well that was the past and that nowadays the parties switched ideologies....LMAO grin grin grin grin

90% of Americans are not Racist! The Native Americans are not racist! Stop blabbing what they telling you. The only racist Americans might be the Irish Americans and so on. Native Americans ain’t racist.
Look up the definition of racism and unconscious bias. I'd be willing to bet my two masters degrees that 90% of Americans are racist just like 90% of Nigerians are tribal bigots. Native Americans make up less than 10% of the American population, Caucasians make up 60% while blacks, mixed and Asians take up 30%.

Native Americans were so divided that they conquered each other often killing the losing tribes which made it easier for Europeans to conquer them. Nowadays they stay closed in their communities, they see the whites as immoral, the blacks as outsiders and prefer to stick to their own clan for everything from medical treatment to schooling. You might think that's not raicst but compare it to what the whites did in the 1900s and you'll see similarities.

For blacks, where do I start? The mere mention of Africa fuels the need for them to crack jokes about our accent, our clothing and lifestyle. Do you sleep in huts? Does your family wear clothes? How did you get to America? are you the prince of Zamunda? When you try to tell most of them that they are descendants of kings and queens and their true origin is Africa, they'll quickly correct you and state that they are African Americans and tremendously superior to Africans.

The whites, well we all know about them. From history to manipulation, they are the dominant group in America and even though most of them would not admit they are racist, when it comes to marrying other race, living in communities with more than 2 or 3 black families or walking home and seeing a black man in a hoodie, their true nature comes out! The unconscious bias embedded deep within them allows them to display hidden racist tendencies they never knew existed.

It's just like what's happening today when the media portrays black men as angry and dangerous. Trump was just one of the popular figures who out of ignorance or outrage spoke his mind, that does not make him RACIST! Keep in mind I'm not saying he's not racist in general in fact 90% of Americans are racists(white or black)! All I'm saying is that this particular issue had nothing to do with racism but public outrage, my grandfather, my uncles, their friends all condemned the boys when the news came out via media but as time went on and the truth came out they began to see things differently, does this make them racist? Bro Nigerian girls are the most promiscuous in this world.

Reason is not farfetched.

At 25 below...you will hardly see a girl that has just a single man in her life. They prefer to sleep with multiple men in that period of their life, citing "don't put your eggs in one basket" as the reason for such whorish act. It is like a norm now..and generally accepted. I had a debate with a female friend over this. She said girls can be excused if they have two or more BFs, but men have no reason to keep more than one girl. She was so strong on her belief, I just weak .

Now, when these girls whose way of life is sleeping with multiple men and sampling several sizes of dickks eventually marries, what do you think will happen? No matter how they try to hold back and not have amorous affairs, time will still present them with a better environment or the right temptation to relapse to their oldselves.

Problem I have with them is not even their promiscuous ways.. But the rate at which they sniff around a mans phones and monitor his moves(my female friends do this to me a lot) to catch him flirting or doing something wrong, whilst doing everything possible to cover her own dark tracks. They brand men with all sorts of dirty names.

Why not cheat and let's cheat...but no, they will want to have their way with you. Eating their cakes and having it
How many countries have you lived? How many girls have you dated? If we are claiming Nigerian girls are the most promiscuous in the world, are we not also claiming that our parents and parents of those young girls have also failed? Even if you're right, don't you think the high rate of poverty mixed with the temptation of yahoo guys/politicians is enough to change the mindset of most of those girls? Want to know how you can change this? Be a better man, stay legit, grow and have your own family. Raise your kids with the best moral compass, let them know that good name is better than gold.
