Time seems to be on the part of the president as the 2019 elections is just in less than 1 year.
People are just getting unnecessary emotional about this election sequence while ignoring the other valid points raised by the president in withholding his assent.
They need to go back and take another look at those bills. If they want INEC to conduct local government elections, it has to be via a constitutional amendment.
The president equally queried why 2 grounds for challenging the outcome of an election at an Election Tribunal was removed.
A lot of both readers and the media has not deemed it fit to reveal which justifications for challenging election results were removed to be able to establish if it will be in the overall benefit of the country or the NASS was just being selfish. This is even more important than the election sequence everybody is singing about.
It is quite ironical that it is the president they call illiterate that has been regularly communicating with the NASS on bills he is withholding assent while giving justifications.
I never heard of GEJ/Yaradua communicating with the house in this regard. For Obasanjo only few occasions.
GEJ simply collated their bills in one corner of Aso Rock and was enjoying his fisherman soup and kain kain. At a time, there was a report of almost 200 bills awaiting Presidential assent/assent decline. It was only the constitutional amendment he vetoed at the tail end of his administration. That was a credit to him I must say, as the amendments sought to water down some powers of the president, and he definitely cannot be there for ever.
They should go and work on the amendments with more zeal and give critical attention to the points raised by the president, otherwise the Supreme Court will just throw the Act to the dustbin based on its contradictory stance with the constitution.
There is even a subsisting Supreme Court judgment in this regard during the Obasanjo time.
If gubernatorial ambition no set, and there is opportunity for another election next year, nothing bad in testing your popularity in order to represent your people.
The only disadvantage is that businessmen as law makers can be very selfish with their policy inclination. They are even better as Executive than the legislature.
The letter goes on to read : “Consequent upon the above, this office would implement the monthly remittance of the gross sum of Seven Hundred and Thirteen Million, Seven Hundred Thousand Naira Only (NGN713,700,000) as a first line charge from the revenue account of Lagos State Government which is to commence in June 2017 and terminate in June 2027.”
The consequence of this is that in a 1 year period the state would spend N8.56 billion as guarantees for the bond and be on the hook for about N85 billion over the 10 year timeline on just this one transaction.
Take the five firms which brought the N27 billion Visionscape bond to market last year led by lead issuing house and arranger Eczellon Capital. They earned N967 million in total from the deal or 3.85 percent of issue size, according to data from the information memorandum.
The big problem though for the State Government and its plan to reform the waste management process in the state is that the coming on board of Visionscape has coincided with a return of trash heaps and dirt across most roads and streets in Lagos.
“They have bitten off more than they can chew. This was supposed to be a wholesale change but it has now unravelled,” said Feyi Fawehinmi, accountant and writer based in the U.K.
“The other big challenge now is that the Public Utility Levy (PUL) which was supposed to fund this has not been rolled out and will be a lot more difficult to do given the current tax climate.
In the meantime the state Govt is paying Visionscape N1.5bn per month. So we need a lot more transparency around this deal and for the state to treat it as a crisis and find a way to walk some of it back.
“Lagos has gotten progressively less transparent today, they don’t even bother,” said Tunde Leye, Consulting Partner at SBM Intelligence.
“Under the previous Governor Fashola for example, even though the budget was not detailed, you could find procurement information on the LASG website (that’s how we knew how much he spent on the website or boreholes for example).
We know exactly the cost of building the Lekki Ikoyi Bridge. Compare to Ambode where we do not know how much he spent to build the Ajah flyover or anything else. Civil society has tried to invoke the freedom of information (FOI) act repeatedly but they have either been ignored or blown off. Lagos is very opaque.”
loganx: where are those ninety something married women gloworld sacked recently? come together, file a class suit.
agabusta: Nigerians are not even given Globacom employment letters. So it becomes so hard to file lawsuits against the entity Globacom.
Globacom cunningly employs all its Nigerian staff through different phony companies. They all have employment letters with different company names, not Globacom.
Only foreigners are employed and issued with Globacom employment letters.
Funny enough as I heard from friends in the system, all the employment stages are carried out by Globacom at their offices. But at the point of being issued with letters, successful candidates are left dumbfounded after being issued with employment letters bearing a different company name.
As per the above, legally they were not even employed by Glo.
kenostika: Shithole globacom with fraudulent Adenuga. So painful that most Nigerians are always cheated. Do not try rubbish with fellow africans cos they know their right. Thnks to the industrial court for their action.Only in Nigeria u will hear of companies including MultiNational operating fraudulently, bypassing laid down rules and regulation because they believe that government officals and Lawyers will compromise.

xcolanto: APC and the buhari lead administration has turn the judiciary to a joke. How can a court stop the national assembly from carrying out it's constitutional mandate given to it by the people?
The court should have used its judges to affirm the appointments of those the Senate refuses to confirm as well if they think they have more powers than the legislative arm of government.
If I were the senate I'll outrightly discard this junk injunction and go ahead with the peoples mandate. After all the buhari lead administration is known for boldly disregarding court orders as seen in the cases of dasuki, KANU, el zakky and other citizens who's rights buhari has trampled upon.
Buhari chooses what court order to obey and disregards the one that doesn't favour him. This same man has the mind to run to the courts he has so far disregarded. Buhari is a joker! The senate must go on.
The judiciary can technically put a clog in the activities of the NASS if they contradicts the constitution in their so called mandate. It has happened countless times in the past.
I can even recall that GEJ vetoed the last constitutional amendments and proceeded to sue the 7th NASS before the supreme court. Till date, that purported amendments never saw the light of the day. Mark this, same will happen to this bill.
You are funny sha. How can NASS enforce a law without the judiciary and Executive?? They are just sitting ducks without the powers of the two of them, and most especially that of the judiciary.
For example, if the judiciary rules that a particular section of the electoral law is null and void on account of its contradiction with some portions of the constitution, all INEC needs to do is to ignore the law as ordered by the judiciary.
Now, Oga how will your 'powerful' NASS enforce a contrary opinion to that of the judiciary? There is no way they can go about it, it's an exercise in futility.
NASS can make laws, but any law so made can be made inoperable by the pronouncement of the Judiciary. It is not rocket science.
Nice one. This is serious hard work. Kudos to the farmer.
But we need to look for a way to mechanize this yam farming.
We can't continue doing things the usual way.
Other developed countries have gone ahead of us simply because they have been able to come up with machines that can improve human efforts multiple times over.
abes: Call the Russians, don't be afraid of western sanctions, the Russians built the mill to 98% before they left in 1994 because the Nigerian government could not fulfil their own part if the deal.
Watch this to get an idea of what is wrong with this country
asobo: APC stalwart always running to the media claiming the are saints. Oga fayemi go and appear before the house commitee and stop crying foul. NIGERIANS GO GET YOUR VOTER'S CARD LET'S KICK APC OUT COME 2019
So for the people to hear from both sides of the divide is running to the media?
This current Senate and House are boggling people down with their incessant summons. I guess you didn't read the part where the minister said both him and the minister of state has attended countless meetings/interactions with the house.
It is getting obvious that the House wants to bend the Minister to take a particular line of action. Which is unnecessary meddling. The house is to make laws and have oversight.
The executive is to execute projects and programs of the government. If the Ministry has not contravened any law/due process, they should leave them to do their jobs.
This current NASS should drop this irritating habit of trying to be NASS and the Executive at the same time.
They awarded money to concession the plant, now they are raising alarm about ongoing plans to concession the plant instead of the government putting money to complete it.
Are they not jokers?? Did they appropriate money to complete the plant in the budget? Was it not money to concession the plant that was awarded? Why are they now raising alarm?
Is it not a pointer that the money they put into the budget for the concessioning was put there as a smokescreen for chopping. And they are now raising alarm because the minister is not ready to play ball.
How come people are not even noticing the drastic fall in the price?
It seems it's only negative news our people like.
Btw The federal government never said there is no importation of Thailand rice, they only said it has massively reduced. There are still legal avenues to import rice. You guys should not stop talking like people with comprehension defects.
ujoinme: It will be budgeted for in the last two budgets of akpabio's administration ie 2014 and 2015 budgets, so keep an eye for next year's budget . groundbreaking will begin next year as soon as funding is made available.
A lot has already been done, the necessary approvals from the federal govt + NPA has been secured. FG has approved a free trade license status for the 16,000Ha ibaka industrial city.
Etebi- Ewang road with the longest bridge in the state is presently under construction in the state, this will be the major access road to the seaport, it will link the seaport to the east west road and construction of this road has reached advanced stage.
Trust Akpabio he is a promise keeper he has proven this time and time again remember what was said about the airport, stadium and many other projects in the states? today the narrative has changed.
Akpabio does not embark on projects haphazardly he takes his time and goes for the best, thats why he is delivering world class infrastructures.
ujoinme: the ibaka seaport project will be carried out in phases like the airport project. the first phase will be the seaport component and the second phase will involve the Ibaka industrial city and free trade zone development. in all the project has a 25 yrs development cycle.
This administration is determined to make significant inroad in the deep seaport developmental phase. and akpabio is working on that. So for the past six years, the preliminary things as stated above has been ongoing and dont forget the numerous road shows that the project has taken overseas and nationally to create investors awareness which has yielded much results eg we are talking about it on this thread, but as Nigerians we want the tangible ie beginning of construction.
construction/ groundbreaking will begin next year so be patient,The architectural plans/ designs is already in, and CCECC has stated their readiness to mobilize to site as soon as the green light is given. Also bear in mind that a big project of this scope which involves FG (with all its relevant bureaucratic agencies) + State govt. + private investors is not a childs play.
The area of appointment, all judges of lower courts and other public officers such as chief registrars and secretaries, among others, are henceforth required to write examinations and be interviewed, in addition to submission of copies of their judgments to the NJC when they are to be considered for judicial appointment
HisSexcellency: The irony of this case is that the giver of the money (dasuki) has his case resting in the coolers, while the receiver of the money is been dragged to court while still in the hospital bed
You people must try to twist everything.
So Dansuki who has been in custody since is in a better position than Metuh who is on bail?
If the situation is reversed, you people will still have something to say.
Sirjamo: Oga, I for no answer you o, but dat Biafra wey you call me na him pain me for body because I be original oodua tokantokan. Back to the topic, take a trip to Kano (if you can) and see the massive infrastructure that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso left for the people, what about human capital development: During his administration, an indigene just need to graduate with 2:1 and off he goes abroad for masters. The moment *mai barchi" (the sleepy one) got there, he stopped everything claiming no money while everyone know that Kano is only behind Lagos, Ogun and Rivers in terms of IGR. Mark my word, Ganduje can only retain his seat due to Buhari factor, otherwise, he's a goner
But you cannot compare the financial standing of states all over the country as of now to then??
The financial standing of the entire country dropped. Most states are even having challenges paying salaries not to talk of infrastructural development.
debosalau: Ganduje's case will might turn out to be like the case of the immediate past governor of Zamfara State who kicked at Yerima after he became governor having been Yerima's deputy for 8years and the only deputy who later got to be a governor in 2007. He was replaced by the current governor, Abdul Aziz Yari, and had since then gone into oblivion. I can't even recall his name.
Never bite the hand that once fed you.
2019 election is almost here, we will see how it goes.
You guys are making this statement sound more irritating by the day.
This is politics, not master/slave relationship.
The fact that he served as his deputy is a pointer that he also had something to contribute to the collaboration.
People just don't select deputy for the sake of that. The deputy is strategically selected to add to the fortunes of the party during the elections.
In all ramifications, the deputy as a candidate and as part of the government also contributes to the success of the administration. More so, a very loyal one, that never gave his governor issues.
I just dont get this concept of governors doing their eight years and leaving, but they will be trying to teleguide the incumbent governor.
It doesn't make sense at all, and it is baffling that some people still try to support that with the irritating statement "don't bite fingers that fed you".
Let all governors leave the people that takes over them to chart their own course, and they won't be embarrassed. It's happening all over the country and just has to stop.
Aburumah75: It never cease to amaze that you people, despite claims to superior education and enlightenment, are still stark illiterates when it comes to knowing the composition of northern Nigeria. Many things you are posting here just make us laugh. Kwankwaso and Ganduje are not Fulani. And most certainly, not herdsmen. Fulani and hausa are two totally different ethnic groups with totally different culture and orientation. Despite this, we appreciate the sarcasm as always.
Don't mind them. The internet has exposed how myopic and unloving they are. Ironically, they are the ones that'll be claiming with vigour other people hate them.
See what a SAN is saying.. cant say am not disappointed.
NASS represents the people and take decicions on behalf of the people including making laws.
When they make anti-people Laws, you guys dont talk but have found your voice cos it threatens the continued stay of una role model failure.
Good thing about democracy is that in the end, the wish of the people portrayed by the NASS will be upheld by the court.
All legal loop holes have been covered. Falana is simply crying wolf.
This is laughable. NASS represents the people, but they cannot make laws that contradicts the constitution, except they first amend such portion of the constitution.
Xisnin: You are wrong Falana, our senators can change any law.
You seem to be forgetting that the person talking here is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria that has practiced law for decades. And has argued hundreds of cases at all levels of our judiciary.
Yes the NASS can change any law, but they cannot enact a law that contradicts the constitution.
In this case, they need to first amend the constitution before enacting such a law. Its very simple. The constitution is the supreme law that supersedes every other law.
The lawyer is right. The constitution is a unique set of laws.
Every other law made by the NASS if it is in contradiction with constitutional provisions is null and void. Except that portion of the constitution is also amended.
