Politics › Bankole Loses At Tribunal As Acn Floors Pdp by aljharem3(op): 7:49pm On Oct 11, 2011
ABEOKUTA—The ambition of the former Speaker, House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole,  to return to the House, suffered a major blow  as the National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal  dismissed his  petition.

Similarly,   the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN defeated three candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP at the Tribunal in Abeokuta.

The Tribunal sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, yesterday which dismissed the petition filed by the PDP on behalf of Bankole who was defeated by the  ACN, candidate for Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Olusegun Williams, was dismissed for lack of substance.

Reading the judgment on behalf of other members of the tribunal, Justice Michael Obi, said the petitioner failed to prove the allegations beyond doubt.

Citing several relevant portions of the Electoral Acts and the constitution, the panel said that it was the opinion of the tribunal that the defendant won the majority of lawful votes cast and declared him   winner of the election and subsequently dismissed the petition.

In his argument, the petitioner had told the court that he got majority of lawful votes cast as against his opponent, Segun Williams, who was returned winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The lead counsel to the petitioner, Adedayo Adegbile , prayed  the tribunal to declare Bankole winner, on the ground that ,over 5000 voters were disenfranchised in many polling units across the constituency.

He argued that, there were unlawful substitutions of candidates before the election, while alleging that, there were irregularities during the election that favoured the candidate of ACN.

However, Counsel to ACN, George Oyeniyi, refuted the claims of the plaintiff and described it as frivolous, saying the petition lacked legal backing.

He cited sections of the constitution and the Electoral Acts to back his claims, urging the tribunal to dismiss the petition and declare his client winner.

Meanwhile,  ACN   also defeated three candidates of the PDP at the Tribunal in Abeokuta.

The Petitions filed by Musa Borokini representing Egbado South/Ipokia Federal Constituency, Segun Seriki,  contested for Ijebu North/East/ Ogun waterside federal constituency election and  Mohammed  Odunowo contested  for  the Ogun East Senatorial District election were all dismissed by the tribunal.

The trio were challenging the victory of the ACN candidates at the last General Elections.

The  INEC had  declared  the candidates of ACN  in Egbado South/Ipokia federal constituency; Isiaq Abiodun Akinlade, Ijebu North/East/Ogun water side  federal constituency candidate; Abiodun Abudu Balogun and the Ogun East Senatorial  Candidate Sefiu Adegbenga Kaka winners of

the elections.

Giving the ruling, the Tribunal said that the petitioners could not proof their cases beyond  doubt, adding that, their failure to substantiate the allegation of over-voting, disenfranchisement,

votes-splitting and non-compliance with electoral Act 2010 have been proved and hereby struck out the petitions.

Thanks for the appreciation, at the end of the day we are all Nigerians.

Not withstanding, Mend should keep blowing up piles etc since the oil drilling has not yet stopped and neither is ND Emancipated from Nigeria as a country

or what does MEND STAND FOR ?

"MEND's stated goals are to localize control of Nigeria's oil and to secure reparations from the federal government for pollution caused by the oil industry. In an interview with one of the group's leaders, who used the alias Major-General Godswill Tamuno, the BBC reported that MEND was fighting for "total control" of the Niger Delta's oil wealth, saying local people had not gained from the riches under the ground and the region's creeks and swamps."

Has any of those points been achieved ?

If not then Mend should continue blowing up things instead of warning Boko haram not to destroy Jonathan tenure.

Bini, Ibibio, efik, Ogoni, Itsekiri, Ilaje, Mahin, all these groups are not longer in Mend and are all ND groups so what emancipation of NIGER DELTA are they still fighting for ? with all these groups out of Mend

It was purely a political group to ensure Jonathan becomes the president with the conjunction of all ND groups from iTsekiri to ilaje urhobo etc, OPC/Afenifere, Ohaneze/massob, ogoin movement. Nothing more to it.

The really people fighting for Resource control and environmental degradation are the OGONI PEOPLE

" As a citizen of this country i can rightly say the only benefit i derive for paying my tax is this subsidy. The 3 tiers of government have not reached the level of accountability that enables them to ask for more. This is like trying to fill up a basket with water. How accountable are your staff with the funds in their care right now? Why not free up some money spent to run the government first? This is where you miss the point. When we talk of infrastructures and projects we didnt meant only big projects like refinery. We mean good roads, hospitals, electrification and so on. Have you gone through all the North to assess FG projects abandoned for nothing. I dont want to mention places not create, Even some agricultural projects aimed at providing food for the whole nation and beyond are also thrown away. People who were suppose to use this projects to provide food, create jobs have all joined politics. In some cases they simply wait at home to get FG allocation to be shared. The big work to do there is to change our peoples mentality. Don`t pretend not to know what am talking.

It`s not enough to site projects, people must go and use them. There are so many opportunities in the North there but people just turn blind eyes to them. I was there to grab some of these opportunities, unfortunately I left that end for fear of been Boko Haramed  grin  grin
Thanks but please we have had 12 years of democratic rule and 37 or so for military rule

the only one i can remember is 3rd mainland brigbe ie the island

@PointB, there is no merit to your argument. If the govt can't have one functioning refinery, or provide 10,000mw then we should go and sit down in our mediocrity. @ al harem

The South East/South South deserve more of FG projects. The problem with the North is not about siting projects but the problem of who to manage them and make them useful for the benefit of all. When I hear people saying that some States in the North are not viable and can`t stand by themselves, I just laugh. If FG projects/infrastructure located in States like Kaduna, Kano Jigawa, Katsina, Bauchi, Sokoto, Niger, even in your home State Borno, etc are properly utilized we wouldn`t be complaining of no jobs up there. Most projects aimed at alleviating poverty have been abandoned. People prefer to be spoon fed than think and work. Some buildings are left empty, even some agricultural aided programs were also abandoned. For what?

The leaders/governors of this region only wait for the monthly allocation from Abuja instead of thinking of ways of empowering the people with existing infrastructure to generate wealth. Same thing run from the state through to the local government and even to the families. Dependent on government must stop in the North if we truly want to grow as a nation.

Some of this infrastructures/project by the FG (not sate or private built) are rare in the South East/South South. Whenever projects are sited somewhere in the South South/East people in the North feel cheated. We must change people`s mentality in the North and encourage entrepreneurship spirit in the South East/South South.

Please encourage more of FG projects in these regions for the benefit of all.
Sure the FG needs to be in the SS and SE. I support it not because the north and the west have cheated the country as Udezue suggested but because it is better for them to use it on SS and SE than using it to enrich themselves and moreover the SS people are one of the best Nigerians you can meet.

Moreover, apart from Lagos island and the refinery in kaduna, what does presence does the West and north have ?

some of this people are confused, some would say lagos is not a SW state, thus we can say SW has 5 states

i mean it is a no man's land, isn't it

Ybutterfly is an ignorant MOFO, giving response to his mumbo-jumbo and junk statistics will be giving him an undeserving credibility. Kid is all BRAWN and no BRAINS. Imagine the dolt claiming that Lagos is 80% Yoruba, why will any intelligent person indulge the kid and his crass ignorance? Let him get high on his own supply Jare!!
As for that unfortunate genetic garbage that calls herself a Thief, She can fall & die, who cares about what she has to say: it's all petty gutter lingos hurriedly put together in Yoruba language. That is my expectation of her, I will be surprised if she did not flaunt her ghetto abilities when intimidated by her superiors.

nawa bad belle people full naija, whats the big deal if south east gets additional state to match other regions? if that will mean more development then kudos to the SE governors. northerners and south westerners need to stop all this their witch hunting of other people progress cause that is why nigeria is in a big mess today.
why can't the east demand some states in the north and SW be merged ?

It has to do with productivity and not equality as you people call it.

For instance why can't lagos and Ogun merge ? why can't cross river and akwa ibom merge etc

Moreover majority of the people that commented here like gar3th and co are from the SS so stop ur fixation on the north and South west.
