PoliticsRe: The Western Media's Portrayal Of Africa by allonym: 1:18am On Mar 13, 2006
this is a fallacious argument.

One big misunderstanding is that the media is portraying "Africa". It most certainly is not. It is portraying new of AIDS, rape, war, famine, strife, religious conflict, etc. It does that for EVERY country in the world.

Media always portrays its country in a good light. Since when is it the US or UK or some other country's media's obligation to showcase the goodness of Nigeria. . .or some other african country? That is that country's media's job.

If you want to look at portrayls of africa in the US at least, look at PBS documentaries. Those attempt to provide an unbaised view of life in whatever specific country or region they are profiling.

If you watch the news, then you have chosen to only see sensational stories. . .and success stories of anyone who is not a celebrity is generally not sensational.
TravelRe: Should I Come Back To This Hopeless Nigeria? by allonym: 1:05am On Mar 13, 2006
you have been in the us for only a couple days and already you see life can be much better than in nigeria. This . . .sadly, cannot really be disputed that much.

What I suggest is that you think long and hard about the direction you want your life to go and the impact you would like to make on nigeria. If you really don't care about nigeria too much, and feel that life for yourself is a much more important goal, then nigeria is probably not the place for your. As a medical doctor, you will be in a much better position in the USA than nigeria.

If on the other hand, you plan on making some impact on Nigeria, you will have to determine how you plan on doing that? As a doctor, your are also in a great position to do that, by giving quality healthcare, not cheating your patients, etc. You can also work at mentoring younger doctors to follow your example, constantly work towards changing the leadership in nigeria through legal democractic non-corrupt processes.

There are many factors that go into this decision and if you're serious, should probably not be taken lightly.

what you sed:

Ha - are you not a christian? All christians know that people are "born in sin and shaped in inquity". That even without commiting any sin, we are already sinners in the eyes of God. So, there is no way a kid is free from sin. And therefore any baby that dies obviously goes to hell.
I looked up that quote in the bible. , and other things which would say that christians are born in sin (or really, the entire world). It is in a Psalm that David essentially makes that statement. There are some other passages that are used to support this idea. , . but I checked ALL of them out. . .and they don't say that. It is total. . . .something. . . I've heard that all these years. . . and the bible does not support it!

So, I hereby retract all my previous statements about babies going to hell and christians being born sinners, etc. Thanks for challenging me. . .
FamilyRe: Co-habitation Before Marriage by allonym: 12:33am On Mar 13, 2006
kimba:
yeah right, the major problem of Nigeria is too much of this Western influence. Africans want to be like the west. It is pervading, no the truth is it has pervaded and eaten deep into everything about us, culturally, religiously and morally. How many of our grand-fathers/grand mothers, and great-grandfathers/great-grandmothers cohabitated before our parents and grand-parents were born. If your aged ones are still around, ask them if they knew what co-habitation means. Am I wrong to say that their marriages were more-successful than the marriages today? They didnt even think about all the wahala we have in marriages today. Today, we now have marriage counsellors. Was this a profession in their days,

When a boy/girl, unmarried man and woman cohabitate, what prevents either of them from having a once-in-a-month cohabitation with another unmarried person somewhere else, Cohabitation is a modern way of allowing fornication and adultery, and what do we have as a result today? STDs and HIV.

Ofcourse, please, marriage on itself doesnt put a stop to extramarital affairs, but with it comes a "sense of responsibility" which many couples in our day don't have. And see, this idea is a ploy by satan to destroy human kind. Once he can succeed in destroying the family, whose bedrock is marriage and commitment to one-another, the battle is over.

Now tell me, if you and your boyfriend/girlfriend are co-habitating, and you have been co-habitating for the past 1-year, are you both always using a condom? why are you suffering yourself, rather than having the real pleasure that is meant to be, if not, so the ladies are on pills, right?(put abortion out of the picture for the moment), doing more harm to yourself and your future? If both co-habitators(i don't call such a couple, coz they are not) have a kid/kids, such children are bastards since both of you are not married. Even if both of you get married later on, it doesnt erase the fact that your firstborn was born a bastard, tell me that this is what we want for our nation in this generation.

@flower put it right, its a slippery slope, and i wonder why shes still living in there ,
- Of course, in their days, and still now, a woman would be in a terrible position if her marriage fell apart and her husband decides he's done with her. It's kinda hard to make a comparison to those times now that women have more power in society.
- What stops married people from going out and having sex with other people? If you think that there is some magical protection marriage imparts upon a couple, you are fooling yourself. Someone who would go out and cheat on his gf or on her bf is just as likely to do so on their husband or wife.
- Married people use condoms too. If you don't plan on having children, but still plan on having sex, other than the pill, there are few other alternatives.

CalabarMan:
There is a term in English law called Common law Marriage, it gives legal status to couples that have stayed together for a given minimum length of time. So for those practicing co-habitation without the intention of marrying watch-out, you may wake up one morning and find yourself married against your wish, and for those not willing or capable of footing a normal wedding bill this might be a cheap way out.

Lawyers in da house is this law applicable in Nigeria in view of the fact that most of our laws were dubbed from the English.

Personally I don't have anything against co-habitation since it allows couples simulate marriage conditions, however I don't think it is right or fair to produce kids from this kind of union. I know there is nothing like illegitimate child in Nigeria once the father accepts the kid as his, but why allow kids to go through this trauma of being the product of a non formalized union?
I doubt common law marriage exists in Nigerian Law. Also, you don't just wake up one day and and WHAM you're married. You have to purposefully take advantage of the law - ie filing the necessary paperwork in order to take advantage of the "advantages" under most western law of being married.

chinani:
1) I personally would never cohabitate w/ any boyfriend. but if a lady or man want to do so then it's their decision and I wouldn't look down on them.
2) I don't think the pracitice is good. It's referred to as "playing house" b/c that's just what it is child's play w/ adult consequences.
3) The society should accept it b/c the society should accept free will.
4) I don't think that it helps the couples b/c American studies show that couples who co-hab before marriage divorce just as frequently as those who don't. Also, some social scientists think that people who co-hab are those who are afraid of committment. people who are like "I won't marry you, but you can move in" and so in America around 50% of people who cohabitate NEVER GET MARRIED!
5) Nope. It wouldn't reduce divorce. It hasn't in the WEST.
6) I haven't done it and I never will.
7) Why? I think a man needs to know that I can take care of myself and that he can take care of himself and that he can't backdoor or squirm in or out of a relationship w/ me. If he wants to live w/ me it's going to have to be for real as in MARRIAGE.
- And less than 50% of people who date get married, so cohabitating couples would have a better chance than other people.
- There is always a way to end a relationship, unless you are dead. While cohabitation may seem to be a lower level of commitment relationship. . .exactly what do the people in it expect? Why expect someone who is in a low commitment relationship to exhibit high levels?

flower:
I personally do not see the value in co-habitation. However, I do see other's points of view when it comes to understanding ones habits before marriage. My stance is this: If you would be unwilling to marry a person because of where they squeeze the tube of toothpaste, then maybe you really shouldn't be with this person. That's and extremely petty reason to not marry someone. If you say, "Well, that wouldn't stop me from marrying this person" then why live together if you're going to accept and deal with the way this person is with or without living together?

I also say this from a stance of experience. I've lived with my boyfriend for 2 years and it in no way pushed me to marry him. Main reason why:

Why do I have to get married to him if we're already playing house?

Co-habitation can quickly become so convenient that you may not move toward marriage and you very well may end up breaking it off with this person when you find someone else because you're not really obligated to stay with this person. It's a slippery slope.
- This doesn't quite make sense. You don't want to marry your boyfriend because you must not care as much about spending the rest of your life with him. You are not ready to move on to a higher level of commitment. I doubt if you two were living separately, you would feel that different about him. In your case, cohabitation is your excuse, not a reason.

jclord:
allonym, if tithing does not come straight out of the Bible which Bible are you reading? All of my Bibles even my Oxford edition (which has all the Catholic chapters in it) has over 30 verses that discuss tithing.
Hmm, let me see, according to the bible, tithing is the practice where:

1) You give a percentage of the livestock or food your raise in sacrifice to the priests
2) If you did not raise beyond a certain amount (ie the minimum to feed your family and maintain enough stock to be able to replant or reseed for another year), you did NOT pay any tithes.
3) At the end of the year, your tithe was to be spent by YOU for food, beer, or anything you want in the annual celebration
4) Every three years at the Jubilee, you would also spend YOUR tithe on YOURSELF buying food, beer, etc
5) The tithe during the year supported the levites, who did not participate in any money making activities like the rest of Israel

Why do tithes not apply to me?

1) Through the sacrifice of Jesus, I am freed from having to make ANY other previous sacrifices (THIS INCLUDES THE TITHE).
2) I am not an Israelite or Jew, further, there are probably no more levites (as there was in the days of the bible) to support through tithes.
3) The Levites made up more than 1/12 of the Israelite population. How do I know, well, the bible itself says that the tribes of Judah and Benjamin were smaller than the others. So, without some weird division of population, the Levites would make up a significant portion of the population. . . Now, lets think this through. I need to support say. . .10% of the population of a country with the wages of the other 90%. What could I do? Hmm. . . make the other 90% give up some portion of their income.
4) Old Testament laws were handed to JEWS, something I'm clearly not.

- Guess what, pastors, preachers, etc don't come close to making up a 0.1% of the population of any nominally "christian" country. So, if anything, tithes should be like 0.05% (probably less) of my income, NOT 10%.

Of course, since the biblical description of tithes no longer applies to anyone, it is pointless to even try to determine what the correct percentage should be today.

I state this unequivocably, there is NO passage in the New Testament which says Christians should pay tithes. NONE. The closest people come is when Jesus says "render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar's and to God what is God's".

If you plan on making the argument that tithing (in today's times) is based on this, perhaps you could explain why we should disobey our governments when they institute things whe believe are incorrect. Further, if you are going to try to argue that the bible supports tithes. . .which is doesnt. . .but if you try, then you of course realize you'll be twisting some passages to fit your agenda. Fine, I'm used to that. Almost everyone does it. But then, be ready to explain this to me. Without ANY twisting of the wording WHATSOEVER, I can SHOW without ANY shadow of DOUBT, that the bible supports slavery. So, tell me, how can we now say slavery is wrong? How can we contradict the bible so clearly?

Prepare Yourself Well.
Hi

my mum and my boyfriend says when u don't close your eyes when u are kissing u don't trust this person. Everytime i kis my boyfriend i close my eyes. This is automatic.

Greeting from germany
I suppose that is one way of looking at it. But then again, closing your eyes when kissing could mean you think the other person is ugly.

The only reason I could think of for why keeping your eyes open while kissing means you don't trust someone is if it was possible to rob someone while kissing them without them noticing. If a boy or girl is rubbing their hands all over you enough so that you'd be fooled when they take your wallet or money. . . I doubt you'd notice even if your eyes were open. . unless your wallet/money is taped to your face.

bluenubian:
hey people close their eyes cause its a natural thing to do, plus it would jus be freaking creepy is u were kissing someone and both of you boys were jus staring at each other
This statement is a matter of opinion. Closing your eyes when kissing is not natural, it is maybe cultural or a reinforced stereotype. Saying having your eyes open is creepy falls under the same category. There is no natural process defined for kissing. . it is up to the kissers. Just like sex. . .just because the missionary position is the stereotypical one does not mean any others are unnatural or creepy. . .

In the bible it says that litlle kids go to heaven becuz they have no knowledge to know whats going on and mental people becuz they have no knowledge either.
people are judged of there sins by what they know and apperently if a kid dosn't know something or understand something they are inocent, they don't know.its like if i were to kill someone and i didnt know that that was wrong. God wouldnt judge me as bad as he would my friend who knows killing someone is bad.

So if a little infant were to break something and they were never taught not to break something.Well then your not going to punish them u just tell them that is not rite.

So if you were to face God today and you say "oh i didnt know that you had to ask the holyspirit in your heart" he will say ya rite u heard it on a computer from some other girl and you most defenitely have that knowledge. God wants us to live a wonderful life and awsome life full of great things ,blessings, rewards and better most eternal life one day in heaven. He wants us soo much he loves us sooo much but most of us instead of letting God direct our lives we let the devil. And its great for a season until all hell breaks lose.trust me i know from experience but God has lifted me up from those things.

Well, what kind of assembly?

Intel? motorola? ti? pic? Atmel?

There are lots of assembly types. Id say to get a general grasp on one, its best to pick one and read up on that, rather than trying lots of different things. I'd also suggest looking up 6800 assembly. This is a small instruction set and pretty simple to understand. (Another thing involved in assembly types is the processor memory architectures - harvard or von-nuemann). Anyway, focus on 6800 assembly.

For something more basic, lookup Register Transfer Logic or Register Transfer Language. This is essentially a description of how data is transferred in a processor and serves as a further explanation of how certain common instructions work.

The Jews have the whole world believing that a person who's not Jewish is a gentile; THIS IS A LIE!!!! READ THE GENEOLOGY OF NOAH'S THREE SONS AND YOU WILL SEE WHO ARE THE REAL GENTILES. Moses was not a Jew like the history channel and other people say he was. Moses was a levite FROM THE TRIBE OF LEVI. Look Jesus was described as having wholly hair and skin like brass. COME ON WHO ARE WE FOOLING, WHAT WHITE PERSON HAVE HAIR LIKE THAT AND BROWN SIN COLOR. and for those white people say it do not matter what Jesus looked liked a fooling themselves becasue they see Jesus images everywhere today as looking like them. If white people was to wake up tommorrow and see Jesus images everywhere even on there walls at home and in church as a black man they would flip.
perhaps you don't know what a jew is or what the definition of gentile is.

1) By definition, if you are not a jew, you are a gentile. It's pretty ignorant to say anything else.
2) Being a jew is more than a religion, it is an ethnic grouping. Just like if any of your parents are black, you are automatically black, if any of your parents are jews, then so you are. No one contests Mary was a jew, therefore, Jesus would have had to be jewish.

3) nobody can make the argument that jesus was white anymore than they can make it that he was black. He was a jew. . .which is its own ethnic group, just like being white or black. There is no way around it.

1) You cannot assume that an assembler is efficient.
2) I'm not going to attempt to guess exactly what people are thinking. I'm going to respond to what is posted. I saw nothing in his post hinting that he's assuming that assembly is only as efficient as the designer makes it. . . in fact, if he did say that, then there would be no point in making a further statement about the efficiency of assembly. Therefore, it would seem that he could NOT have been making that assumption.

In fact. . . there is nothing efficient or inefficient about an assembler.

In case you have forgotten, all an assembler does is translate short pnuemonics into the even harder to memorize machine code. It does not do ANY code reorganization at all. The only place assemblers optimize code is when instructions are "emulated". Emulating an instruction means that your processor has one or two instructions that it supports which when used together achieve the same result as some other instruction not natively supported by the processor. Since, depending on the processor, there are multiple ways you could "emulate" a particular instruction, that would be the only case where an assembler could be talked about with terms approaching the word "efficient".

So, my point still stands, assembly is only as "effcient" as the designer makes it. Technically, all assemblers are equally efficient because technically, assemblers are not efficient at all. . . they just expand pnuemonics from something easily memorized by humans to something not.

ProgrammingRe: Is Assembly Language Dead? by allonym: 5:23am On Mar 02, 2006
assembly is not quite a language . . as is C. .

For example, for a class, we each had to design a 4-bit microprocessor. To limit the amount of "help" you could get from other classmates and to make it a more individual project, we were each assigned slightly different architectures and limited to certain units. , for example, some people could use a hardwired control unit, others a microprogrammed one. Also, the types of buses, tri-state buffers vs muxes, etc were specified.

The control unit is essentially where you generate all the control signals that make the math and logic units of the processor function correctly and store their results in the right places. It essentially implements the possible instructions of your processor. This means all of us had to create the binary signals that would make each function get the correct operands, perform the correct operations, and store the result in the correct places.

So, the bit pattern that forms those signals are grouped in a manner up to the designer. So, for example, the bits which control stuff could be arranged like this:

[Logic funtion select] | [math function select] | [ input register] | [output register]

Of course, even for my 4-bit processor, it was more complex than that. But, my point is that for each "function" your processor can do, there is one and only one combination of those bits that will do it.

So, A + B -> A yields one combination and A + A -> A yields another. These combinations are typically called OPCODES or machine code.

Assembly language is a means to write text that another program translates to the opcodes of your specific processor.

So, while A + B -> A has similar opcode to A + A -> A or A + 1 -> A, it will be painfull to have to memorize all of them. (of course. . i had to actually create all of these for my processor. . . but I only had 16 "instructions" and two registers to select from. . . so it wasn't that bad. ) So, you assembler essentially does that memorization and translation for you.

I say all this to say that assembly is only as efficient as the designer allows it to be.

If I created my processor so that to add two numbers, you had to go through 20 steps to load them into each register and another 10 to actually perform the add. . . the assembly . . .and the processor would be terribly inefficient.
chrisd, when you make accusations like this, you're asking for more than you can swallow. I don't mean to offend anyone here (especially Catholics), but was it so long ago to have escaped your memory that the Catholic Church was involved in sex scandal? (You can find samplers here: http://www.boston.com/globe/spotlight/abuse/response/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_priests'_sex_abuse_scandal).

You don't have any substance in what you're posting as far as I'm concerned. Just because your wife got kicked out of her local pentecostal church does not mean that every pentecostal church is as evil as the image you're trying to establish. Your own version of Catholic Christianity is your personal cappuccino and should not become the launching pad for your virulent attacks on other Christians.
Well said.
