No one said the BTR3 was a not good IFV. All 40 of them (since 7 are armend with 14.5mm VHMGs) will be a good sytem for Nigeria. The BTR is suppror to the Bradly in some(most) regaurds. But they to small in numbers. SA first batch of ratel replasments is in a batch of all most 300.

NBC protecsion has been around for a long time. Even 1970 AFV have had over pressuer and colective has been around even longer.

Budget is essential because it effects equipment and most importantly training standards like availability of ammunition for training purposes.

Ethiopian infantry forces are good yes, and they have a few good planes and gunships, but there are many questions on the operational status of there hardware with such a low budget, even if stardards of living are different, operational cost of hardware like fuel and parts are mostly based on internationally set prices, unless you produce them indiginously something which I doubt Ethiopia can do currently.

Lastly the lack of a Navy in Ethiopia is a great disability because modern navies uses there navies to deploy ICBM's and can attack ground targets deep in a country by only using its airforce for recon and target acquisition, and then later for direct infantry support.
So I don't believe in the hype

patriot4: The problem is that there was no massif retirement in the Nigerian army, so how do you go from 120000 personnel to 62000in just four years ? Now I have had it with you. The ISS doesn't have access to the number of troops in the Nigerian army. The COAS does. The COAS is notorious for always complaining about the fact that the army size is too small for the size of the nation, so I don't see why he would say the number of troops is higher than what it really is.

And the budget is far to small for a army of even 62,000

But just to throw in my own 5c. I really laugh at this socalled 737-500 seecond hand troop transporter because basically it would only be used in domestic deployments, because if that plane is used in deployments to hotspots/warzones it stands no chance against handheld SAM's or anti aircraft guns and that's a fact. That plane is not configured for hotspot deployments, it has no flares and its super structure isn't even robust enough to take a hit from a 35mm anti aircraft gun.

You can use it for external deployment just not to a red zone. Basical you could use it to ferry troops to a safe stageing area in a malil styel campaghine or to peace keeping missions like that of Sudan.

They can carry more men but less supplys per man than a C130. All so the comfort level in a boeing is far higher than a C130.

You know that most places that list 120,000 use the iss. Only there source is a 2007 report. The 2011 report says 62,000.

I bielfe the current and more up to date source over a army genrial that may of very well been miss informenved, exagrating, lying, including other facotrs extra extra. 62,000 is the current listed force of the 2011 milltary balance of power. Now yes it is out of date but I doubt it will go up by 60,000 in 2 years when it has been on a doward tred to streamline ever since the end of the civil war.

4 divsions and a few extra unpendent units get you to about 50 to 70 thousand.

Because I trusted those idpendent sources. You can doubt it all you want but I have the PDF infront of me. It says 62.000 in the nigerian army 10,000 in airforce and 8000 in the navy with 80,000 in land based paramilltary and 2000 in maritime paramiltary.


Note this is acive dutie. Nigeria may have a reserve force of 60,000 that is not being mentioned.

If it is 120,000 that will make the nigerian army really under funded.

Earlier in her speech, the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada, who was represented by the new Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Aliyu Ismaila Numa, said that with the coming on board of the Boeing 737-500 series, it was hoped that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) would build its airlift very soon since it has the capability to do so.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Group Managing Director, NAFHC, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Kure, said the aircraft would commence operations with the initial client base of mainly Armed Forces, Police and other para-military force. He also said that the aircraft would be available for charter, adding that this will contribute towards personnel motivation since they will be airlifted to reduce fare. In his remark, the managing director, Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited (AETSL), Air Vice Marshal Alkali Muhammed Mamu, said the AETSL is solely owned by the officers and men of the NAF.

It a good plan I just qustion the need. The boeing not going to land it front line combat zones and if you need to fly troops in a boeing charter a flight. Even the Americans use charterd flights.
