TravelYuletide Celebration: LASEMA Boss Cautions Lagosians - Must Read by AutoJoshNG(op): 11:14pm On Dec 22, 2016
Following the announcement by the Federal Government of Nigeria that Monday 26th, Tuesday 27th, December 2016 and Monday 2nd, January 2017 have been declared public holidays for Christmas and Boxing day celebration, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has advised Lagosians to celebrate the festive periods with caution to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and properties.

Speaking in his Office today at Alausa Secretariat, the General Manager, Mr. Tiamiyu Adesina urged Lagosians to stay safe as they should celebrate the yuletide, by avoiding excessive drinking and reckless driving on the highways as several lives had been lost due to these illicit acts.

According to him " as the year comes to an end, it is a common tradition for people to visit their loved ones; attend social events; disobey traffic rules; excessive consumption of alcoholic products; driving vehicles that are not road-worthy" all these, he said usually results in loss of lives and properties.

He also noted that rates of accidents and emergencies are usually at its peak due to the euphoria of excitement displayed by people while trying to move from one point to another. Hence, the need to celebrate the festive period devoid of these acts become essential.

Adesina also recalled that the Lagos State Police Command in December 2014, outlawed the use of Fireworks popularly known as "Biscos" and "Banger" because of the potential hazards associated with the use of these devices to the people and its environment in the State. To this end, parents and guardians are therefore, seriously advised to discourage their wards on the use of fireworks which could lead to domestic accidents such as skin burn and sometimes destruction of properties through fire outbreak.

The LASEMA boss also hinted that aside the routine night patrol by the Agency's towing vehicles around the 3rd Mainland Bridge to Berger end of Lagos Ibadan Expressway and the Western Avenue to Lagos Abeokuta Expressway, the LASEMA Response Unit has deployed personnel and heavy duty trucks such as the Super Metro to be stationed at Anthony, to cover Ikorodu Axis and another one at Ajah to cover Lekki-Epe Expressway. Other areas of coverage include: Ikeja, Mile 2, Badagry Expressway, Iyana Iba- LASU Road, Igando-Ikotun Axis.

Also, the Agency will extend patrol through Apapa, Orile Igamu, Ijora Badia, Ajegunle Axis and its environs. He expained that the essence of these patrol is to tow off any broken down vehicle(s) causing impediment on the road as this could possibly result in an accident, loss of man-hour and gridlock associated with broken down vehicles on these roads.

The General Manager also appealed to Religious bodies, Club owners and Event Centres to work with the State Government and Security Agencies to monitor the activities around them and report suspicious and unusual activities during such gathering that may compromise security of lives and properties.

He noted that Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Safety Service, Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Nigerian Police Force, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and all the other agencies that are relevant in the management of emergencies in the State have been put on red alert to secure and protect the lives and properties of the people living and embarking on business activities in the State.

The Genaral Manager however, assured that the State Emergency Call Centre 767/112 is open for 24hours to any distress call from all the nooks and crannies of the State.

Finally, while wishing all Lagosians a wonderful celebration, Tiamiyu Adesina re-affirmed his Agency's readiness and commitment in the management of emergency/disaster in the State through adequate and quick intervention.

Travel10 Safety Tips For Driving This Season. by AutoJoshNG(op): 11:11am On Dec 22, 2016
The End of Year period in Nigeria is usually associated with an increase in crime rate and personal security risks.

Here are a few tips to bear in mind while driving your car or as you ride as a passenger this season:

1. Keep doors locked and windows up at all times when in traffic, if you can
2 .Refrain from keeping valuables and attractive items such as phones where they are clearly visible
3. Do not let your car’s fuel level drop below quarter tank
4. Park in secure areas and avoid parking in the open street. Walk to your car with the keys in your hand
5. Check your surroundings before getting out of your car and do not leave the vehicle if you feel insecure
6. Exercise due caution; if you witness an accident or come across a stranded motorist at night, call the rapid response number or emergency services (112) to report the incident
7. Be cautious if a passer-by indicates that your car has a flat tyre or other defect and urges you to stop
8. At unusual/unexpected roadblocks keep windows up and doors locked and display the required documents if required
9.Remain in your car if it is rear-ended by another car and ensure it is not a hijacking or kidnapping attempt before inspecting any damage
10. If you suspect that you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station, another safe haven or public place and avoid lonely routes

Please remember to dial the hotline “112” in case of an emergency.

Drive safely this season.

Car TalkHow Many Nigerians Will This “the Young Shall Grow Bus” Kill? by AutoJoshNG(op): 9:50am On Dec 17, 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToNYuk_D7LU

Dear Lord, we really need your intervention in this country. Leaders are not only passing wrong bills, vehicles and generators are also passing CO2 (Carbon Monoxide) emission everywhere.

I was going on my own o.. before this "The Young Shall Grow bus" came to unleash this thing you saw in the video above.

Without mincing words, CO2 emission is the single thing I hate the most about this our Nigeria. Man cannot even take fresh air again. To drive with windows down is a problem... Container trucks, BRT buses and Keke NAPEPs will not let you. The smoke is so tenacious it will even follow you to your house through your neigbour's generator.

I am very surprised no law in Nigeria tackles this emission issue. Global warming is real you know.. A few months ago, the Kara bridge river in Lagos went dry overnight and some people thought it was done from the village.. The signs of global warming are manifesting gradually but we remain oblivious.. Wake up Nigeria! Wake up!

We are busy killing ourselves for oil when it is fast losing its global relevance. Cars are going electric at a geometric pace. Countries are setting deadlines to eradicate petrol and diesel powered cars from their roads. Norway says by 2025 while Germany and others will follow by 2030.

Let us come together to stop this CANCER causing carcinogens. Let us come together to make this world a better place for our posterity.

Therefore, Government should hasten constant power supply... Senate should effect policies that will effectively tackle emissions... and all Nigerians should act now because CHEMOTHERAPY is not beans. Why drive a car that smokes? Why run your generator all night when inverters can be cheaper?

Kindly share and don't forget to tell us what you hate the most about Nigeria and proffer solutions.

Car TalkN15m 1986 Steyr Puch Pinzgauer 716 Spotted In Lagos by AutoJoshNG(op): 10:31am On Dec 16, 2016
If you’ve been looking for Benz G Wagon’s Papa, we’ve found him. It’s the 1986 Steyr Puch Pinzgauer 716 which was spotted in Lagos by...

It was manufactured by Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Austria, and named after the Pinzgauer, an Austrian breed of horse.

This is the ultimate 4X4. It serves as a troop carrier, fire rescue and hunting truck. It is also used for rock climbing. It is popularly used as a military vehicle, but can still be spotted with some extreme individuals like this guy.

See the extreme capabilities of this N15m 1986 Steyr Puch Pinzgauer 716:

The Pinzgauer is a highly accomplished off-road vehicle. Its capabilities, in some operational scenarios, are better than that of the Humvee and the Land Rover Defender.

- 45° approach and departure angles
- 100% slope, or until tyres lose traction
- 700 millimetres (27.6 in) fording depth
- Can climb down a 360 millimetres (14.2 in) wall
- 43.5° side-slope
- 1000/1500 kg of payload (4×4/6×6)
- 335 millimetres (13.2 in) of clearance (lowest point when fully loaded)
- Top speed (4×4): 110 kilometres per hour (68 mph); (6×6): 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph)
- Full engine power available at 4 kilometres per hour (2 mph)
- M body type carries 10 people (4×4), 14 people (6×6)

Car Talk5 Real Reasons Car Importation Through Land Border Was Banned by AutoJoshNG(op): 5:13pm On Dec 15, 2016
When the rich lament about the ban of car importation through land border, I always understand their plight. However, for the average Nigerian that intends to buy that 2003 Toyota Camry… You need not worry because you didn’t even have any real benefit before the ban.

Reasons car importation through land border was banned:

1. Only Politicians and Top Government Officials truly benefitted:
These guys smuggle brand new cars through the land border like pure water. In 2014, I went to Ilaro for the first time and slept over. You won’t believe over 100 brand new Land Cruiser and Prado SUVs were smuggled into the country through that route that day. The vehicles came in around 6 pm and were parked in a large compound until they departed at midnight. The residents told me most of those cars were going to Abuja. As the owner of the compound was an official smuggler for the politicians.

2. Corruption, Leakages and Smuggling:
You do not want to imagine how much corruption has been going on at that Seme border. The Custom officials are just getting richer at the expense of the country.

Leakages and pillages everywhere. Custom exploiting smugglers and smugglers killing Custom officials in return. It has even become a battle field with over 70 Custom officers killed in 2016 alone.

3. Double Duty Makes an Cotonou Cars More Expensive:
Are you among those who think Cotonou cars are cheaper? Wake up, It’s a myth.

This is the logic. Cars in Cotonou are not sourced from space. They are imported from USA, Canada and Europe. This means, Lagos and Cotonou bound cars are bought from the same market… at similar prices. Shipping cost is also not different.. I know this because I have shipped to both locations. So how can a Cotonou car be cheaper? The answers are simple:

-- Some greedy Nigerian car dealers add excessive profit margin on their cars. Compared to Cotonou dealers who focus on quick sales turnover.
-- Partial or total evasion of import duty at the land border.

If you buy a 2003 Toyota Camry from Cotonou, you will pay 500,000 Cefa as import duty to Benin Republic government. You will also pay another import duty to the Nigeria government if you follow the legal route. Both duties will not be less than N600k. Obviously, that’s higher than the N435k you will pay at TINCAN or Apapa port in Lagos. Thanks to the car crossers (Fayawo drivers) who help cross the cars at little or zero duty.

Note: The 500,000 Cefa duty in Cotonou is usually a flat fee so it is insignificant to importers of expensive and exotic cars. So, a 2016 G-Wagon owner will prefer to smuggle through Cotonou with N2 million instead of paying N21 million in Apapa port.

4. Locally Assembled Cars:
The bigwigs that smuggle these exotic cars can as well buy brand new cars that are assembled in Nigeria. Federal Government wants them to patronise Innoson Motors, Peugeot Nigeria, Stallion Motors, Eastern Vehicle Assembling Limited (EVAL) etc. This will create jobs and reduce the demand for dollar.

5. Add Your Own:
Tell us your own reason why you think car importation through land border should or should not be banned.

Car Talk2018 Mercedes Benz E Class Coupe Revealed Today (photos) by AutoJoshNG(op): 3:14pm On Dec 14, 2016
Welcome to the grand arrival of the 2018 Mercedes Benz E Class Coupe. Benz fan, where art thou?

It comes with lavish performance, comfort and style. This is an astronomical improvement from the outgoing model. It is also longer, wider, and taller. With this, Benz will be winning some more loyalists

It strikes a perfect balance between the smaller C Class and the larger S Class. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful amongst the 3 models. What do you think?

The overall length and wheelbase have increased by 4.8 and 4.4 inches respectively.

It features a dashboard that is nearly identical to the sedan’s. The primary difference is the air vents, which Mercedes said were inspired by jet turbines.

At launch there will be four engines to choose from: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel pushing 194 horsepower, two 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines making 184 and 245 horsepower, and one 3.0-liter V6 churning out 333 horsepower.

You’d get a standard 12.3-inch infotainment display. I can tell you, the features in this car will blow you off your feet. Do you remember the remote controlled BMW 7 Series in James Bond‘s Tomorrow Never Dies? It is now a reality with this car. You can now move your car in and out of tight garages and parking spaces using your smartphone… I trust my Nigerian folks, see show off

Kindly share and tell us what you think about this masterpiece..

Car TalkHow Old Were You When You First Drove A Car? by AutoJoshNG(op): 6:02pm On Dec 12, 2016
The picture of that moment still remain crystal clear. It was a sunny afternoon in Port Harcourt City, I was watching Double Impact by Van Damme with my elder brother in the living room. Immediately after the scene the 2 Benz Regular cars were dropped into the water to distract the cops, my brother went into my Dad's room and got his car keys from its hiding place.

Before I could say Jack Robinson, I heard the unique engine sound you could only get from a 1983 Benz 230E W123. Then he started to test the skills we had learnt from watching our mum drive. Told him to stop but he didn't listen. I couldn't beat him so I had to join him.. Haha. O'Boy, see driving. Thanks to our large compound that left no obstruction in the way.

A 13 year old me and my 15 year old elder brother feeling on top of the world. We had unlimited fun mixed with fear. My Dad knew eventually, being a sharp guy but he let it slide being a gentleman. That was my first and last attempt until clocked 17.

I thought it was a crazy thing to do until I saw some badt guys in my secondary school.. "Federal Govenrment College Port Harcourt". I was in SS1 when I saw a JS1 boy drive himself to school on his first day. His elder brothers were in the car though.

I know we have some record breakers in the house. Tell us about your first driving experience, the age and the car you drove in the comment section..
