Car Talk › Re: Tariff On Imported Tokunbo Cars Raised by AZeD1(m): 10:03am On Oct 04, 2013
tomakint: Trust me the FG is prepared for adequate funding of local producers especially through the Automotive Industrial Policy Development Plan!
Will the FG also fund the people who will buy the cars?
Motorcycles (used and unused) are banned in most States in the north for security reasons. This forced the common man to fall back on tokunbo vehicles as a last resort. I feel it is unfair for the Govenment to now make them less afordable especially since the local car manufacturing industry is not really functioning. Besides, how many people can aford these brand new locally made cars? Well, I guess the only option now left for the masses is to start pushing donkey carts.
The kind of backward reasoning displayed by the FG is mind bogging.
How many cars are produced locally?
How many people can afford a brand new car?

texazzpete: Majority of Nigerian car owners own ONE car, not two. You people are making up statistics.
You can only levy taxes on cars when you have put in sufficient public transport density that driving becomes a massive luxury. That's the case in the city of London where the bus and rail system is so robust and dense that it's often the faster means of getting around. it will take decades for Nigeria to get to that level.

The only way this your harebrained statistic would hold true is if you insinuate that the middle and lower classes have so much money that they buy multiple cars. You also fail to explain how - if i owned two cars - the two cars can be on the roads at the same time. Has cloning technology hit Nigeria yet?
The city of London's transport system should be what the FG should study and not this policy they are trying to promote.

Abok1: The government doesn't have to enact a law to stop people from buying more cars, but simple policies in the line of subsidizing the cost of public transport in the country, making it compulsory for car owners to pay road tax, residence parking permit and so on would go a long way in reducing the number of cars on our roads
Well said.

texazzpete: 1. I struggle to see how this is your problem/business.
2. I'd like to see the source of your statistics. I'm pretty sure you made them up.
1 Its my problem because the government should not just formulate a policy to 'form activity'
2 Do a sample survey of the people around you

Sincere 9gerian: I agree with you on the aspect of credit system. A credit system is actually part of the new policy. The report by Premium Times is incomplete.

It is not the business of FG to manage traffic. It is the responsibility of state govt. I think the mistake people make is to analyse every action of the FG in isolation. This automative policy is not the only thing FG is doing in the transport sector. Roads are being built, old railways are being rehabilitated, new modern railways are being built, rivers are being dredged, river ports are being built, etc, etc. All of those will provide alternatives to people.

But alternative or not, the FACT on ground now is that according to the above report, we spend a whopping N500 billion annually on importation of vehicles. With a good and well implemented automative industrial policy, that N500 billion or a substantial part of it will be spent locally, providing jobs for our people and saving huge foreign or exchange.
I know its not the business of the FG to manage traffic but if you take a holistic view of the 500 billion spent annually, you will see that a greater portion of that is spent by people who already have cars. The question should be why will a person own 3 cars and how can we deter people from buying multiple cars?

I believe the auto makers should invest in Nigeria and even if they do, its likely ,that only one brand would be manufactured in the country.

How the hell is Insincere 9gerian missing from this thread? If it was Fashola that did this same thing, the dude would have written an epistle on how Fashola hates poor people. Now he is missing in action when it concerns his state!!!

1MCN: I think this is a very laudable and lofty streak. The FG must be commended for the giant reformations it's making in almost all sectors of the economy in one fell swoop. Even with the lowest elb of citizens' morale support the FG has managed to continue to position the economic POWER STEERING of the nation towards the lane of prosperity.
God Bless Nigeria and Nigerians
No it's not a laudable idea. Why do people buy cars (some people have 6)?

Even in the western world where people buy brand new cars, at least 70% are bought on credit. Does Nigeria have a working credit system? No

Simple idea, start with building a credible transportation system so that people won't have to own cars

Atouke: Good observation do you know the number of model/mega schools rauf has built in OSUN and the number of schools demolished/mearged?
1/4 of the amount that is proposed to be used in building i unit of model school if put into renovating+ adding more blocks to fakunle school will be 100x better than any new model school rauf will ever build and also more cost effective.
I don't live in Osun and i don't know the answer to your question. My point was building more schools doesn't necessarily translate to improved quality.
Politics › Re: Aregbesola’s Massive Looting Of Osun State by AZeD1(m): 6:23pm On Oct 01, 2013
Atouke: Stakeholders am forced to bring this question back as non of you has attempted to provide answers to them

5) Why is rauf demolishing/merging schools instead of hiring more teachers/renovating schools?
This is another question that is 'tricky'. One quality always trumps quantity. So building more schools and hiring more teachers does't necessarily mean increased quality of education and that's one of the problems of Nigeria. (in)Sincere Nigerian goes about claiming that one of the achievements of GEJ is the building of more universities but today, ASUU is on strike and the only thing the more universities will do is produce more half-baked gradutes. I can't say that is Rauf's reason for doing what he is doing, i just wan't you to tackle Rauf on quality not quantity.
Politics › Re: Aregbesola’s Massive Looting Of Osun State by AZeD1(m): 6:13pm On Oct 01, 2013
Atouke: Thak you, you raised a very good question. there is no such law. it is good for non indigenous /residents to be appointed in other states. i applaud such initiative and hope that other states in the federation do same. afterall ogbeni was a commissioner for works for the lagos state GOVT under Asiwaju.

That said here is the problem, Ogbeni was a commisioner in lagos because he resided in lagos for years and knew the problems inherent in the state and hence could proffer solutions for it. So is Ben Akubueze.
What Ogbeni is doing in Osun is different, he is importing people from lagos note those people do not live in osun, and has no ties to the people or problems of osun and hence do not know what the problems of osun or what the people want and hence will not be able to proffer solutions to osun problems.

Thats why you see them bringing the solution of lagos problems to Osun for solution ie Lagos because of its small size lacks farm land for agriculture. this is a big problem in lagos so what the lagos base osun administrators/commissioners/ appointees did is to annex Osun land to solve lagos Agric. land problem.

this is what you get when you do not allow indigenes/resident to patake in the development of their state. they bring imported problems and foreign solutions to the state which has no bearing to the desired development for the masses in the state.
I don't live in Osun and can't tell you how the commissioners/political appointees are doing but i believe it would be naive to say just because they live in Lagos, their solutions to Osun state problems won't be ingenious. Some of them might actually be from Osun state and may know the best way to solve the problems facing the state.

Atouke: Gwabe if you or any of the stakeholders want to show that you are credible sources, rather than use big big words to cover rauf corruption as raised by the original poster please answer this allegation that he raised with facts not sentiment/big grammar:

1) Is Rauf appointing mostly lagos residence to political offices in osun as opposed to Osun resident? thereby undermining the state residence a chance to be close/contribute to the development in the state?
I'm not holding brief for Rauf but this your number question is as stupid as questions come. Is there any law that stipulates the appointment of Political holders is based on state of residency?

Back to the topic, if a woman will divorce her husband each time he cheat, then she will never raise her children in one man's house.

I don't have much to say
Why will/should a married man cheat? Most men would not hesitate to throw out a cheating wife but expect the women to 'understand'?
Romance › Re: When Can an African Woman Divorce Her Husband? by AZeD1(m): 6:43pm On Sep 27, 2013
Nomski0: I get what you're saying. That was obviously an extreme case. So its kinda allowed.
But the way marriage is insulted has everything to do with how easy it is obtaining a divorce. Divorces can happen, but the rate should be minimized, especially in africa.
For divorce to be minimized, people have to realize that marriage is not for everybody and there are responsibilities which include not cheating.

The African woman has be brought up to believe marriage is the ultimate and staying married irrespective of circumstances is a must. Hence they will accept a cheating husband just to be a Mrs.
