PoliticsRe: Was Colonialism Good For Africa? by Banderas(m): 3:43pm On Jun 01, 2007
I think the concept of colonialism is a good thing. However I beleive strongly that colonialism as it was applied to Africa produced very little benefits to africa, it was designed strictly to profit europe. Arabia and Europe PLUNDERED Africa, broke down the emerging middle class (most inventions and developments are made within the middle class) of ancient africa, and we ended up right here, with a messed up inferiority psyche, and a good doze of self hatred, along with the present unstable social structure.

Oh by the way, a great deal of what counts for "civilization" in the western world was paid for by the plundering and rape of Africa.

PoliticsRe: Wole Soyinka Talks Too Much - Should Be Brought To Order by Banderas(m): 2:45pm On Jun 01, 2007
Folem - wole Soyinka? Do you even understand the man at all? Wole would NEVER call on foreigners to do ANYTHING for Nigeria. Wole is a hardcore Afrocentric person, who is totally against any form of colonialism. I don't consider him perfect, but there's absolutely no doubt that he has his facts.
LiteratureRe: James Hadley Chase Novels: Share Your Experience by Banderas(m): 2:42pm On Jun 01, 2007
Hey. I used to like chase, until I read four books within 3 days. After this I found them quite monotonous - they all have the same theme - some guy commits a crime and "almost" gets away. They were okay when I was in secondary school, barely tolerable in uni, and totally unbearable afterwards.

Naah mate, there is a great deal of stuff out there that make JHC seem quite mediocre, he is in no way a great writer.
Christianity EtcRe: Disons Non Au Cannibalisme! Say No To Cannibalism by Banderas(m): 2:38pm On Jun 01, 2007
Horus, where in any of these passages is the bible saying that Christians should be cannibals?

"I once read an article on the internet. Some guy in Germany ate another guy"

Does the above statement imply that I am telling you to be a cannibal? I still insist, none of the passages you're quoting shows that the bible says christians should be cannibals
Christianity EtcRe: Disons Non Au Cannibalisme! Say No To Cannibalism by Banderas(m): 2:21pm On Jun 01, 2007
Horus - what exactly do those scriptures say? Does it say Christians should be cannibals, or is it talking about punishment for a way of life? Mate, if we must argue, let's argue, but please let's argue wisely

Yeaterday, there was one Yoruba Nairaland user called Fekuti running his mouth about how Igbo should not be trusted. I guess that thread has been yanked off by admin. In it I told him/her that for every Igbo who is bad (and there are indeed many) there are at least 10 bad Yoruba.

Docokwy - you do realise that this sentence reduces you to the same level as Fekuti.
NYSCRe: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by Banderas(m): 12:59pm On Jun 01, 2007
Pray tell, what discipline? I was homeless for 4 months in Kano, a city where I knew no-one and couldn't speak the native tongue. I was told to teach math - a subject that would have done nothing for my career prospects.

If I didn't redeploy to Lagos (unofficially) I wonder where I would be right now.

The only good part of NYSC in my humble opinion was the 3 weeks orientation camp.
NYSCRe: NYSC Is A Waste Of Time? by Banderas(m): 12:51pm On Jun 01, 2007
I disagree. I'm no longer sure it's acheiving it's aim. In my opinion, it's simply unecessary. I suggest we have a one or two year national service in the pure military, and stop sending graduate engineers to teach mathematics.
Music/RadioRe: Looking To Form A Rock Band by Banderas(m): 12:33pm On Jun 01, 2007
hahaha, that name will simply NOT fly. You need to understand the Rock culture, and the expectations thereof. Rock songs, apart from the background music are all about clever english and subtle innuendos. And the name ALWAYS matters. If you want to form a Naija rock group, why not go for a well known phrase, or something a bit cliche, like "sweet mother" from the popular song, or perhaps "A people of the man" - a modification of the Chinua Achebe song.

You need to make an effort with these things, and realise that most of your target market are likely to be upper-middle class people, who will tend to be well read and enjoy witty mannerisms and wordplay.
RomanceRe: Why Do Some Men Ask For Your Number But Don't Call? by Banderas(m): 12:25pm On Jun 01, 2007
This is a difficult one. I tend to be more cautious. If I ask a girl for her number, the vibes she gives me will dictate whether or not I will call. If she has the "I'm doing you a favour" attitude, I'm definitely not going to call. Why on earth would I call someone who looks like she may insult me when I call (i.e. I'm paying money to be insulted!!)

Then again, I tend to have made a reasonable connection with a girl before I venture to ask for her number, so most of the time I will indeed call.

There are so many reasons I guess,
RomanceRe: 3 Years Older Than My Boyfriend: Is It Ok? by Banderas(m): 12:07pm On Jun 01, 2007
I'll be brutally frank here. If y'all live in Nigeria, you're bound to meet a lot of resistance from both families, because the general beleif is that younger guys aren't mature enough, which generally speaking is probably true. But there are exceptions to every rule.

I once dated a woman who was 4 years older than I was. I'll say here and now, that it was far and away the most stable relationship I have had to date. There was much more tolerance and understanding than I had gotten previously. I see absolutely nothing wrong with dating/marrying a younger man.
EducationRe: How Much Do You Expect To Earn After Graduation? by Banderas(m): 11:55am On Jun 01, 2007
Nosa101 - What industry do you work in where a fresh post-graduate earns $100K? That my friend is a pipe dream. Even PhD graduates don't earn that much. It takes years of work experience, and not education to earn that sort of cheese
ProgrammingRe: What Makes A Good Software Developer? by Banderas(m): 11:53am On Jun 01, 2007
I personally am of the opinion that first and foremost, to be a coder you simply need to have an analytical mind. Otherwise you'll get stuck in the ever widening community of mediocre and failed developers.

Experience and a good amount of research (read books, visit forums) also help. You need to understand the way the language works, otherwise you may end up writing "heavy" programmes which bog down the resources, and run like a loaded lorry.
RomanceRe: Why are Men not Crazy about Tall Girls? by Banderas(m): 6:24pm On Jan 11, 2006
You know something, I find this strange, women complaining about guys not dating tall women. The fact of the matter is that quite a number of guys really don't have any problems being with taller women. I'm 5'9", but I have dated a 6'1" babe before, perhaps the fact that I weigh 95KG of stainless steel and sex appeal helps, I'm a big person, but not tall. Hell, my last "fling" was with a girl about an inch taller. From my experience, the problem is actually from women, who always insist that they can NOT date guys shorter than them. Not a big problem for me, we all have our preferences, but I daresay because of the sheer number of women who keep insisting that they can't date shorter guys, I tend to avoid taller women. I don't particularly enjoy being turned down because I'm "too short".

RomanceRe: Man or Woman, Who Should Pay on a Restaurant Date? by Banderas(m): 5:18pm On Dec 28, 2005
People. Let's stop mis-interpreting the bible. The bible also says disobedient children should be stoned to death. I think it's not as straightforward as you guys are quoting it.

The whole "provide for your family" thing comes from a time when the world was mostly physical, so due to the difference in physical strength between men and women, men did the more menial activities, while women tended to sit pretty. Nowadays, we have a more intellectual based world. In this world, there is very little difference between men and women. Of course as I said earlier, there is a tendency for naija babes to simply wait for some guy to come and pay all their bills, either because of abject laziness or social pressure. Most times they make up for it, or claim to make up for it by doing the cooking and cleaning et all.

For someone like me, I can cook the average woman out of the kitchen, and I have a good amount of tidiness inbuilt. What appeal does it have for me to date a babe when all she has to offer is cooking and cleaning? If I need cooking and cleaning, I'll hire a cook/ cleaner. Now we begin to see the reason why so many Naija babes in the western world find it so difficult to get bfs and get married. Their wahala can sometimes be too much
RomanceRe: To Date a Black American by Banderas(m): 2:15pm On Dec 28, 2005
I have met dozens of excellent african americans. I have also met quite a number of dubious Nigerians of all races. i find it really weird, that we Nigerians with our reputation for fraud and dishonesty can judge and condemn any other group of people. Are you aware that here in the UK, west-indian children are told to stay away from Nigerian kids in order to stay out of trouble?

If your parents are unaware of the facts of life, then it is our duty to tell them. Are you saying that you intend to let your parents run your life? If so, why not let them get you a spouse from the village?

The fact is that if you meet african americans from the same background and walks of life as yours, they are going to be as decent as you are. Unfortunately most of the time, because of differences in financial abilities and also because of the tendency for young people to identify with rap music and it's attendant gangster culture, many young nigerians tend to associate more with the less educated and more unruly african americans.
RomanceRe: When Is The Right Time To Be Rich, In Your Youth Or When Old.? by Banderas(m): 10:52am On Dec 28, 2005
You're more likely to have more money as you grow older and get promotions and start reaping the fruits you have sowed. I sincerely can't say exactly when it's better to be rich, but I can tell you that it'll be awful to be poor when you're old.

Heh heh heh. If you wanna do better, then pay the whole bill, don't share it. At the moment, I agree that men and women are equal, not that women are better.
RomanceRe: Inferiority Complex in Dating and Relationships by Banderas(m): 5:00pm On Dec 19, 2005
It all boils down to the individual. I have quite a lot of confidence in myself (mebbe a bit too much) so I tend not to be worried about a woman making more money than I do. I know that sooner or later things will even out. If however she had all these tall and good looking male friends, it would bother me a bit. I'm not quite tall you see. I think every individual has something that he wishes could be a bit better.

goodguy:
Hey PrettyH, the guy is making sense. I definitely can't go out with a lady that expects only me to always do the spending everytime.

Afterall, u ladies say what what a man can do, you people can do better. So why the noise? According to vinna's post, she's referring to african culture which only favours you ladies. Banderas also listed african cultures which doesn't favour you ladies and you're making noise.
Oga, thanks for your post mate. You're really a good guy!!!

Can we use a different word? That word "local" has a different meaning to me. Hahahaha. It reminds me of "omo alata".

Like Seun said, a certain level of exposure is always nice.

prettyH:
Don't think your point holds water in our generation.
PrettyH, I agree with you. Men no longer treat women like that because the traditions are changing. So why are women claiming that men should provide for them because it is african tradition? That seems like double-speak to me.
RomanceRe: Nigerian Raised at Home or Abroad: which would you prefer to marry? by Banderas(m): 4:45pm On Dec 19, 2005
In my opinion, it makes no difference where she's brought up, as long as we share the same views and values. I have met really decent women here in the UK (Yes, even Jamaican girls) while I have met really messed-up home grown babes back in Naija.

That said, I must confess that I tend to be more attracted to babes raised here because we tend to have more in common, in terms of expectations in a relationship and things like that.
