^ Really? I think for many people it is cool to hate on Microsoft, so anything that MS does draws their condemnation. Just read all the negative comments about Windows 8 and you would be certain the company faces imminent peril, except that Win 8 is posed to be one of MS' best selling desktop OS right now. That's their core business and yet people still predicted their demise. We all heard same about the Skype acquisition- according to many people MS was about to extend its leprous hands to internet phone calls yet Skype today accounts for a large chunk of online calls. The Xbox One saga was handled badly by MS but even after the policy reversal you hear people talk as though the XB1 is already a complete failure; meanwhile the fact is that the XB1 is a solid offering packed with many appealing features and it will most likely have a good run. So all this talk of a Nokia ruin is line with previous behaviour from the naysayers. MS is buying Nokia, meaning that MS has committed itself to seeing that Nokia phones will be profitable, they have a real stake in its success. Nokia has a history of great products, they will still be making the phones but this time under the MS umbrella. The guys at Redmond will not chase all the Finnish chaps out of their offices, they will work together! |
Tingles: I wish they had gone the android way when they had the chance, now Microsoft is going to ruin the brand and its legacies. RIP to my favorite brand, as a loyal fan, I'll still get a symbian anna/belle device before Nokia's final burial in 2014.Seriously you guys! All this talk that MS will ruin anything is TOTALLY unfounded. Is Skype in ruins now? Is MS not interested in seeing their investment grow? If for no other reason I am in support of this move because it affords phone users a third alternative when it comes to choosing a mobile OS. iOS and Android, while great in their own rights, offer a two toned and now very predictable experience. In this case more is always merrier. |
Crinkles. TUC.. . . Can't think of any other now. |
I could eat that in a second on a hungry stomach |

Lord_Reed: LoL!What notable efforts had MS made in hardware before the smartphone era? And on a lesser note how is Apple primarily a design company? The Surface is seeing lacklustre sales now but given some strategic pushes it will succeed in future iterations. Why do I say that? It offers users a full fledged PC experience on mobile, nobody is doing that yet. It is presently hampered by its bulky design, poor battery life and high cost. A slimmer, more power efficient model with one of those Intel 4th generation chips would be an easy sell for the enterprise crowd. Anyways Why am I optimistic about this recent acquisition?- the phones will be made by none other than the proven and talented guys from Finland thats why. MS FTW ![]() |
Lord_Reed: I never said Xbox failed. Read my post again I called Xbox MSFTs miracle success when it comes to hardware. Look again the Xbox is the only hardware MSFT has pushed with reasonable success (in the volumes we are talking about anyway). Zune failed whether it was incorporated into WP8 or not it is clearly not a hit.Erm, MS up until now was a SOFTWARE company so those brief excursions into the hardware world were unsurprisingly met with difficulties. So you think that all it takes to survive in today's mobile space is the marketing reach that Nokia had built on an antiquated OS(Symbian). Sony is an electronics behemoth (and no, they didn't just start selling phones) with strong marketing reach yet even with Android things aren't rosy for them. |
Enough of this cry of doom. Nobody here has given solid reasons why this isn't a good move for Nokia. |
^ Dude, Nokia's mapping unit is anything but "barely out of its diapers". Nobody beside Google has an offering that can compare to it. |
Lord_Reed: From a money stand point of course this makes Nokia happy but from a strategic direction point there is a lot of doubt that MSFT can handle a mobile device business; WinMo wasn't all that, Zune too went burst, Surface is lumbering slowly in sales. Aside Xbox and Sidewinder (and maybe Microsoft Mouse but that is too basic) none of MSFTs forays into mobile or hardware haven't been spectacular, even Xbox lost out on the Bluray vs HD-DVD fight. Those cases you cited are completely unrelated to this aquisition; Xbox losing the Bluray/HD battle didn't mean that the Xbox was a failed console, Zune was a music player that has seen elements of itself incorporated into WP8. Besides, in this instance the mobile phones will still be made by a bespoke OEM - Nokia. As for the rest of your post: surely Nokia would have struggled under Android just as Sony, HTC and virtually every other OEM aside Samsung is struggling. What Nokia needed was a sure chance of a comback and that lay best with WP8 as opposed to the foray that is android. I think this buy out by MS is a win win for both companies |
chenu: no i don't think so.You don't think so about what? |
I don't understand why many see this as a bad move. It affords Nokia the financial muscle to consolidate its place as the third mobile OS with Windows Phone 8. People who cry that MS will ruin Nokia are just plain woe-mongers. Is Skype, also now owned by MS, in ruins? It is a strategic move of strength building for both companies if executed properly. One can understand though that some people will express sentiment as Nokia was on the verge of a comeback, now though, they will do it not as the Nokia of old but as the newborn of this MS-Nokia fusion. And please can people stop decrying Nokia's refusal to go Android, things would have been way worse if they did. |

omiobo: I ate the worst soup of my life yesterday. After being away from for 5days,my wife decided to welcome me with a food without maggi and salt. I was mad but I couldn't show it her that I was mad because of the tasteless soup. When I couldn't hold it anymore,I asked her what are the things missing in that soup. She laughed, and said maybe it's crazyfish,oh! Sorry crayfish. I said no that this is beyond crayfish. She laughed again and said salt and maggi. You knocked me off with" worst soup of my life" LOLGood food is an essential part of living good. My heart goes out to guys like you. |
emmatok: The host club,managers,taxes,e.t.c collects part of the money. You refer to transfer and sign on fees. The matter under discussion is the wages that players earn each week not so? |
emmatok: Op, most of the so called money they make don't go to players.Explain what you mean. |

Chess is great. I love the scheming involved, the feeling of "trapping" your opponent, the attacks and counter attacks. Probably the best game ever. |
An untrue tale. It's interesting seeing how people fall for the most ridiculous of stories. Why are folks so gullible? |
I used to dislike eating salads when I was younger but have since come to love it. |

bukatyne: Like my mum would say, a film that is rated is not good for anyone to watchReally? |
AjanleKoko: Of course you can create a level playing field. All you have to do is create the institutions, provide reasonable incentives, and make the environment conducive for those people who stay.I understand your point. But when you mentioned a level playing field I was thinking that both the developing country(which has the skilled hands) and the developed country(which requires those skills) stood to benefit through some measure. |
Richfella: HOAX! Expertly put togetherYou know I'm almost certain you are right. |
Meanwhile did anyone notice that no release date was given for Japan the home of Sony? |
AjanleKoko: We also have a unique challenge especially in Africa. The West continues to create incentives to attract our best and brightest to their shores, at the expense of our home countries. This in itself can't really be helped, but there are ways in which a level playing field can be put in place to ameliorate the effects of this situation. We have just refused to address the problem. What possible measures can be used to effect a level playing ground? The only thing I see is in trying to check the brain drain; i.e. make conditions in developing countries such that the talented ones are encouraged to stay back and help. I doubt there is anything like making a level playing ground. |
