ypzilanti: Then, in the early 90s, the tides began to change and cookies started crumbling. Someone in the management of the NTA wondered why they should keep spending huge amounts of money making programmes when they could actually start selling ‘airtime’. Not satisfied with this, they moved on to buying cheap South-American telenovellas (The Rich Also Cry, Secrets of the Sand etc). Indigenous classics like Amaka Igwe’s Checkmate were forced to round off their stories and shut down as NTA doubled their airtime prices and forced out indigenous producers. Please note that selling airtime is illegal, according to the Nigerian broadcast code, as set by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). Where the NTA had been at the forefront of funding and producing great local content, it now sat back and collected money from the sale of ‘airtime’ and profits that were rolling in from adverts placed on the South American telenovellas by the likes of Lever Brothers, PZ, UACN and others. The producer became the consumer, and things fell apart. The excerpt above seems unclear to me, aren't TV houses allowed to make money through advertisements when airing shows? I understand the part where the author states that NTA stopped funding local content but how else were they to generate funds, which the local content needed, other than advertisements? Or is the author saying that NTA should have done nothing other than wait for government hand-outs? I think the author is wrongly blaming the airing of foreign programs by NTA as the reason for the dearth currently witnessed in Nigerian television. |
Next week hasn't arrived yet. |
No worries, Vulcan will work some special pixie magic to build 6 new refineries for Nigeria. |
3D Nollywood? Oh the horror. |
Is there a TV series out there that is more captivating than Breaking Bad? It is probably the hottest show 'cooking' these days. ![]() |
Can't wait to see The Dark Knight Rises. It should premiere this weekend. |
In other words GEJ gives a damn now because his job is at stake? Interesting. |
The Ouya first has to have decent titles to be considered a competition. Big and decent titles are usually produced by big studio houses something the Ouya shuns since its games are going to be for free. It is really betting on independent developers for its success. Might work or flop(this word again )but all this remains to be seen. |
See how conspiracy theorists on this thread are spreading FUD as though there was some prize to be won. Anyone who does not like Google's innovation should not use is. Simple. Enough of this CIA, FBI and Space Center rubbish! |
I don't understand Royals's insistence that motion control gaming and the Nintendo Wii are both flops even when available facts suggest otherwise. Then again I don't understand what goes on in the mind of a troll. |

^I thought 5 years was the lifespan of consoles but with no announcements from the big players except Nintendo this current gen is set to last for a few more years. Maybe the hesitation to release new consoles is because the likes of Sony and MS are yet to fully recoup investments on their present offerings. You can't say there weren't significant improvements over previous consoles either. Features like online gaming, DLCs, and HD graphics which many gamers take for granted today are quite significant. 4llerbuntu: played on a 52 incher once, regularly on a 42 bravia.Never had that problem. Perhaps you sit rather close to the screen? Focusing properly with the three displays in the image above would be even harder, no? |
I'm in the habit of ignoring foul mouthed and juvenile comments on NL. |
They just had to use this old picture of Oshodi. ![]() |
On the contrary I think both the Ouya and Wii U are aimed at the mainstream market. In fact part of the reason behind the Wii U was to attract the core gamers market (even though I think its features will quickly pale in the near future). The Ouya also targets the mainstream albeit with a different selling model .i.e free games, $99 console. Whether they will succeed remains to be seen. |
I mean why the need to revisit the PS2? Retro gaming fever? ![]() |
Interesting rig there but I was just observing that the bezels on the screens were kind of getting in the way. Then I looked up the comments on engadget saw that some others were bothered by it too. How about playing on a single screen of say about 40- 47" or more. ![]() |
There are tons of good games on the PS2, Metal Gear Solid 3 Black GOW 1&2 Prince of Persia (Sands of Time, Warrior Within, The Two Thrones) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas ... The question I have to ask though is why now? |
Aso Rock, the rock itself or the Presidential Villa? |
Nigerian reports. What really is illegal internet use. |
Besides its not like there isn’t work on new consoles Anyone scanning the horizons for sight of the next generation of gaming consoles would certainly not have missed Ouya and Wii U. While these developments seem exciting in their own right I wonder if they are next gen that gamers looking out for. The Ouya is an android based console which desires to bring android gaming to television and will certainly appeal to independent developers who want to produce works without the oversight of a big corporation. The Wii U on the other hand is the successor to the Wii. Yes the Ouya looks set to be hacked to hell and back and the Wii U looks likes the Wii with a tablet. Is this really the next gen we should be excited about? |
I heard an argument that the gaming experience on the current consoles have plateaued and that there is little, if anything, being added to games these days. One party was blaming this on the assertion that developers have maxed out the capabilities of today’s consoles while another was saying that it lies with developers to innovate, that new hardware will not change anything. Now I don't know if there is even any sense in the argument but I will pose this question here: Is the longevity of the current generation of consoles a good thing? |
erniok: @demdem, ur hatred for GEJ is taking another dimension. This is Sokoto Govt involved. Prof Barth Nnaji did not sign the contract, it was signed by the secretary †☺ the state govt. Read the piece again. Is this supposed to be in defense of Vulcan? Try again |
Okija_juju: What can a Laptop do that an Ipad cant?!There is only so much media one can hold with 64Gb of memory. |

Reports like these are usually misleading. Are the workers at the call center in Jos really MTN staff or third party contractors.i.e, are they directly under the payroll of MTN? |
