Politics › Re: Why Are Nigerians So Negative? by Beaf(op): 4:28am On Jun 20, 2009
blackspade:
@OP

Please provide a list of reasons why Nigerians should be positive.
There is one and only one simple reason. We cannot develop this way.

There is a category of Nigerian that is overly aggressive. I want to state my perspective clearly:
[li]the govt is corrupt and directionless[/li]
[li]the people can change the govt by mass action or poll[/li]
[li]the people are suffering, but fighting each other[/li]
The govt the culprit in our eyes, so why are we quick to hit each other with verbal missiles?
How can we bring change when we're always fighting. Most times when there is a discussion, all we do is keep shouting each other down, calling each other names. You will find that 90% of the time, the name caller has not applied logic or deduction. Where is change coming from? Who are we waiting for to bring these changes if not ourselves?

Or is it just that we have been so brutalised by military rule that a large percentage of people have "command mentality"?
As I said earlier; there is also a class of Nigerians who say things like "we are useless", such statements do not inspire confidence.

Nigeria can't even maintain a freaking hydro electric power generator it's Nuclear power the now want to go into. I just pray if the build the plant, it's in a  very remote area where it won't kill folks if they ever have a disaster.
When oil pollution never kill us? Let them build the things so we can have dependable electricity supply.
Business › Re: Nigeria–Russia Set To Sign Nuclear Deal by Beaf: 1:56am On Jun 20, 2009
Hmmmm. Will a single nuclear reactor be located in the north or will there be a spread like there is for refineries? I smell some politics out of this.

Ndipe:
I am Nigerian, but not negative, so dont assume that all Nigerians are negative. Even if they were, their criticism is valid, because the country has been descending downhill in each successive year.
I am not talking about criticisms, no that must continue by all means. What I am talking about is people who make statements like "we are useless" and are ready to haul abuse when challenged.
Politics › Why Are Nigerians So Negative? by Beaf(op): 12:06am On Jun 20, 2009
Why the culture of "shout negativity loudest"? This problem to me is worse than corruption because we shout and hurl abuse at each other without trying and cooperating to address ways to sort the country out.

Yes things are bad and government is corrupt and lethargic. But how can we get changes if we are all fighting each other?

There are a lot of us in foreign lands with so much to contribute to the country in terms of science and high tech. We are doing things here that we would rather be doing at home. This thing just drives us mad.

Enron, global banking crisis. Na 9ja do am? In the UK, buy Exchange and Mart; turn to Business Opportunities. Tell me if a good pecentage of the adverts are not some type of scam. Is it printed in 9ja?
Does anyone say the US is fraudulent because of Enron and the banking crisis? Can the sums from Enron and Yahoo be compared?

The problem is that the average 9ja cannot hold their ground with confidence. In public, we want to shout loudest to strangers about how dirty our home is. When people say we are fraudulent, we start mentioning supporting stories as if we too are not 9ja that will be harmed. If it behaves like a donkey, its a donkey.

I hate the people giving us a bad name. So I will not change my accent or my name or feel bad in any way about it. 9ja is my home.

You say you have no ulterior motives? Why did you choose Nigeria for your research. There are hawkers everywhere. Why single out Nigeria considering the average US citizen is ignorant about anything foreign? Considering that there are 150+ countries to choose from? What is your specific interest in Nigeria?
Computers › Re: Xp And Vista, Which One Is Better? by Beaf: 3:30am On Jun 18, 2009
If youre running 2nd user equipment, then XP. If your PC / laptop is new, go for Vista.
A lot of "religious" folk talk bs about vista without using it simply because they hate microsoft. Remember microsoft smashed a lot of companies on their way up. The guys who were affected are angry and both bankroll and fuel the bs.

Vista is sleek, intuitive, faster and much more stable than XP.

NB. I'm running both XP and vista on several PC's and laptops, so have experience of both.

Programming › Re: '.php' And '.aspx'-lets Compare Both Scripting Langs by Beaf: 2:40am On Jun 18, 2009
First things first; ASP.NET is not a scripting language. It is compiled.
ASP.NET is by far superior in design, security and performance to PHP (like comparing molue and hummer).  shocked

You should be comparing classic ASP (VbScript, JavaScript) and PHP - both employ spaghetti style coding.

Politics › Re: American Hawks Gala In Lagos by Beaf: 10:49pm On Jun 17, 2009
Strange things happen for strange reasons.
An American selling gala in lagos is very strange. Perhaps it is to promote a new range, for the press, the guy is insane or checking street mentality. He certainly isn't researching street hawking.

It is intelligent to ask questions about this guy.

Instead if you dey type "raflamao" you be mumu; de kin person wen all im pikin papa be im neighbour. Why? Because de mugu tink say neighbour suppose say "hello" for im bedroom.

Politics › Re: Nigeria Will For Ever Be A Third World Country, This Has Been Predicted Here. by Beaf: 7:03pm On Jun 17, 2009
I've lived England so long that I will never dis it. But there are many ways Nigeria is better and ways it is worse. Who no go no know!
As they, money cant buy happiness, here in the UK everyone wears black and genuine smiles are had to come by; all houses are brown, there is a law for everything so many that day to day life can be a technical and legal minefield.
In 9ja there are water, electricty, job and difficulties with general ignorance; but the level of happiness is something to die for.
Politics › Re: American Hawks Gala In Lagos by Beaf: 6:46pm On Jun 17, 2009
When you want to check how stupid someone can get, you approach them with something stupid! If they react "ahhh! How amusing! Notin spoil" You get a very high reading on the stupidity scale. When the result is preventative action or questions, you get a very low reading on the stupidity scale.
The situation is like a man in a wifes bed (only he's not her husband) , the legit fool is the lounge drinking burukutu,  "ahhh! How amusing! Notin spoil".
The guy aint even black, but he took a 12 hour flight to sell gala in oshodi and mushin? Nobody is asking what questions he's asking people at street level, no one is probing to see if he really is after a deep understanding of the street psyche in lagos (and the danger that entails).
Romance › Re: I Want To Die by Beaf: 1:57am On Jun 17, 2009
So you lost your job and boyfriend and you want to die? It is not worth it. Stop being silly and pick yourself up, harsh as it may sound; your only problems are low self esteem and selfishness. You want to bereave your family because of a man when there are plenty?

Listen, about 11 years ago when I had just moved abroad, I lost everything I valued, no money, no one to talk to in a foreign land. I slept rough on and off for two years (out of ignorance) always afraid that someone would do me harm. I could get only the worst jobs because I was not settled (or maybe I was wild eyed out of desperation). Even though life was hell I never lost hope, not for one day. Then one day I got a place; I had no furniture and could not even afford curtains, I only had dreams. Girlfriend? I could only have one in my imagination. You know what I did?
I set about single mindedly, to save up for a computer (not that I could use one). I approached one of the early internet cafes and offered to help free if I could be taught a thing or two (I didn't learn much). Finally I bought a 2nd hand computer and set about teaching myself to programme. I had to place it on old newspapers on the floor because I still did not have any furniture. I did not kill myself.

Today, I can look at a plaque with nice words from Microsoft on my mantelpiece because I am not dead. I live in a nice house. My story continues,

What about those who are blind, or deaf, or dumb, or have no legs, or have an awkward limp, or are traumatised by war? Do they not find happiness? Your story is not even half bad, please pick yourself up, be happy and live.

tpiah:
we're also racist to each other. People arent blind and they can see that.

besides, there are Africans working at BBC. I wouldnt be surprised if they personally write or vet many of the stories.

Nairaland alone can supply Nigerians who will say worse things about Nigeria and Africa than what you've read so far.
Do I hear despondence?

The confidence to stand up and be counted is the pillar to development that will cure all of the negative feelings you rightly say some of us have about ourselves. Such feelings are usually accompanied by self doubt and the lack of inner muscle to struggle with life’s brick walls to our true potential (and boy! Are there huge brick walls for us to climb). How can we help one another up if we lack collective self belief?

In the same UK, "Irish jokes" are rightly considered racist. The institutions mentioned wouldn't dare put one on air. These sorts of joke (and the "deepest, darkest Africa" mentioned) are the result of some unrefined ones among the conquerors believing they are superior to the conquered. It is as crude as that.

The Northern Irish share a similar history of being colonised to us. So why are "Irish jokes" racist and "deepest, darkest Africa" ones are not? Is it perhaps that the Northern Irish would cry out loudly? Is it as you say that we somehow degrade ourselves or more that we lack the self confidence to stand up and be counted?

On the issue of some idiot blacks doing the worst badmouthing, they are in the minority. These clowns do not represent us; perhaps you’ve learnt that there where several British traitors during WWII, but does that say Britain fought on the side of the Nazi’s? Questions.

Confidence is the corner stone of development and success. We don’t have good leaders? They rise from our ranks; take care of the individual and leaders will emerge.
Nairaland General › Re: Why Are Men World Leaders? Are They More Intelligent Than Women? by Beaf: 2:29am On Jun 13, 2009
@TTgirl

You should realise that the bible was translated for political benefit (read the preface). Also, it was written 1000+ years ago, so does not answer several modern day sociocultural issues.
By all means follow it if you must, but don't quote it to back up every logical arguement. It makes the points you raise formulaic and dogmatic, whereas situations, cultures and other experiences are unique.
We just need to accept what we are, there male and female before the bible.
Nairaland General › Re: Why Are Men World Leaders? Are They More Intelligent Than Women? by Beaf: 2:18am On Jun 13, 2009
Ask any male child who he fears and respects most, It would be his dad. Why? His dad has the physical and hormonal attributes to wrench seven devils out of him should his head turn wrong. His mums smaller voice really does'nt do it. The whole thing begins from birth.

This is where the man the upper hand; a more imposing physical build, a deeper voice, the likelyhood to take riskier actions, the likelyhood to be more competitive (have you seen responsible grown men at red lights? One foot on the throttle, feather touch on the clutch?).

On average women are much better communicators, where men are much more forceful.

It really is sad that women don't get as many opportunities as they deserve and talents can go unrealised. We can't escape it, its the law of the jungle; the biggest male always leads the lion pack.

Men should always have these things in mind and be cortious and supportive.

Men, bring your sons up to respect women, we owe them several debts.
