So much for misplaced priorities. Those are the kind of yeyebrities that some people will be looking out as role models...............and I wonder about what |

gabbytabby: Does that even make sence as it would not be in the same plot then with all this small plot sizes of today I don't make the regulations. International standard is minimum of 50 metres. Like I said previously on earlier posts and from that which was not clear to you prompting your question. In Nigeria it's likely that rule can't be followed. But like I said assuming your bore hole is at 0 metre point on your land then your soakaway/septic should be at the 15/30 metre point on same land. |

bobkezel: You need not worry, before the sewage from a soakaway gets to ground water level from where the borehole water comes, it has to pass through a lot of strata ; permeable, semi permeable and non permeable. Before it finishes passing through this stages it gets naturally purified. That's the nature's way of purifying impure/ contaminated water that perlocates through the soil. But then, the borehole should be sunk very deep, prevention is better than cure. Also if the area is prone to flooding, that's when you should be more careful. Yes, nature has a way of purifying itself. But you should also consider that the deliberate activities of man are what destroys the ecological balance of the earth. Don't try such even if the depth of your borehole is 1000 metres. Nevertheless what you are proposing does not apply in an ideal environment. Practically the way we build soakaways in this part of the world is in no way the proper thing. Soakaway or septic as the case maybe are not supposed to be built as single or double chambers/tanks. One ought to have a separate chamber/tank where such wastes are first treated by natural occurring elements or by artificial means before discharging such effluents into the environment. If we value our health, we''ll value our environment. |

blacksta: Dear House
Currently doing a soakaway about 12 feet from an existing borehole... What are things to take in consideration.. So that the two never mix You'll need to find another location for your soakaway if you value the health of those who will make use of such water especially for drinking purposes. A lot of factors determine the position of a soakaway away from a borehole. Though due to the size of our land most of the regulations can't be followed through. But the furthest both are away from each other the better. Traditionally a soakaway is supposed to be constructed on the down slope part of any land. Borehole water comes from water beneath the ground from aquifers. The waste water from your soakaway percolates into the soil and with time will contaminate the aquifer. So assuming you have a 50/100ft land, the distance between your borehole and soakaway should be 50ft or 100ft. It may be less considering the position(s) of existing neighbouring soakaways. Given that, 12ft is never ideal. |

esegiftbebor: Well, I'm not an engineer... What should be done in this case....? I want to roof the house and another cost for decking is been raised! If I roof the bungalow without the kitchen decking, is it safe? Is kitchen decking a must to prevent fire? d other options are they more economical? As My original budget didn't carry decking... You can roof the house. Decking a house does not prevent fire, it only slows its spread. Also likewise installing a POP as ceiling material. As regards cost, the POP installation is economical but with fire they are on the same level. Fire is of different types and the degree of heat arising is the deciding factor as to which is most preferred. Economically, installing the POP with an added element can increase its resistant to heat and fire. But whatever you do, let a fire extinguisher be at points within and outside the house. |

Your thinking outside the box is not a creation. It's doing something with available resources/materials to fit your usage. It's all the same copy of knowledge. What I'm proposing does not need electricity for it to function or be operational. Everything needed is within our environment. You only need a Mechanical Engineer or plumber or anyone who is creative to figure it out. Knowledge is applied not copy and paste . |

Marriage26: Good day nairalander,
I am a popular jingo nairalander but got to hide under this moniker...
I have been dating my fiancee for the past 7 years, she had met my parents and I have met her's many times . We planned to get married earlier year. But it was the year my mother left this planet, I informed my family I wanted to get married but they declined, saying, it must be over years of mumsy's demise before I can marry.
We've fixed introduction days 3ice and it got cancelled by my father, what's his reason?
1. NYSC: I was posted to serve in the Northern part of the country 3 years ago, I went to camp, but I couldn't cope with the weather and couldn't leave my business as NYSC won't guarantee me job and I don't have other option. I absconded from the service and faced my business which I saved profits in 7 digits in same year, God made me comfortable.
2: He said I should rather impregnate the girl (backdoor talk)
I am close to my late 20s, he already banned all family members as many depend on him from attending my introduction. He cancelled my introduction without fixing a new date.
My in-law trust me and ready to release the lady to me as I haven't had sex with her since 2012 that we've been dating...
And Also, God had supplied all I needed for my wedding from A-Z.
Do you think this is a cogent reason?. I want to ahead with my wedding plans...
Kindly advise....Thanks Did you say you're 20 years.................... I guess you left a couple of things out. Anyways I'll advice you present your case to God, fasting and praying. Ask for a sign to be revealed. You can use 90 days for it. Marriage is a life time event. |

diordaves: From your post, I can say I don't have the full information, but I can say that the collapse is despite the columns and not as a result of the columns. Columns and beams don't collapse structures.
It may be the soakaway design is not suitable for the soil condition or the design was poorly executed in some if not all aspect of the design. The soil may be more challenging for this type of traditional design.
Columns and beams when properly introduced with the right span make a safe structure. You are sounding like building a soakaway/septic tank is an advanced AA++ work. I'd assume you ask the Op more questions other than speculating to arrive at answers. Columns/beams act as frames/sub frames in any structural element. Can you also speculate the reason(s) behind this collapse?

bobkezel: The blocks are not hollow blocks, they are 6" blocks. Please run a beam then. Let your beam be the height of a block. In my previous brief story of using a 5" block(solid) instead of minimum 6" block being procured by my client. At the 4th course, the blocks were waving like a wind action was upon them. My mason carefully managed to put the 5th course. It got me wondering because I did not expect given the size of the tank. I had made provisions for columns but never intended to run a beam since my intention was to use 9" hollow blocks. But given the new situation I had to run a beam. I have previously post a pix of it but I'll do same again. Just you see the size.

diordaves: Omo, I beg to differ with most of your recommendations regarding this enquiry.
One: All soakaway/septic system should have columns - this is best engineering practice. When people come to you for advice, always recommend and encourage best practice. Soakaway without columns is cutting corners - Period.
For the poster to come here with that post, it may be true that someone on ground with knowledge of the soil condition may have recommended introduction of columns and beam which is a superior advice. But here you are I guess with no knowledge of the soil condition encouraging an inferior solution.
Two: After 5/6 courses, all round beam (chaining) should be introduced to prevent unintended collapse - best recommended civil engineering practice. After the next 5/6 courses, beam again and then deck.
Death from soakaway collapse in Nigeria is an unreported world. This is preventable death by spending just a fraction more to recommended best practice in health and safety.
Imagine Nigeria with poor quality blocks that will be constantly wet and soaked as a septic tank and then you construct such soakaway without columns and beam. - to me it's an accident waiting to happen especially during the raining season over time.
So building a safe soakaway is not a matter of choice like you posit. It's a conscious deliberate decision. Differed opinions is allowed. Engineering construction is applied sciences from knowledge gotten over a period on the field. Yes, its advisable one stick to best engineering practices. But what if a client does not have the resources to adhere to such or insist his/her way? Will you abandon the job or act as an Engineer and proffer alternative solutions to get the job accomplished? You need to have field experience to be able to build. Not all clients understands engineering best practice. Be an Engineer and apply the knowledge. Let me cut a story short.... A recent soakaway/septic tank I did for a client..... After explaining what I intend to do, I requested for 9" hollow blocks, 16mm/12mm rods, etc.... Client and site manager went and purchased 5" solid blocks thinking it was 6"solid. I requested to see who supplied the blocks. He came and was on same side with the client. We argued over it, I got angry, my artisans got angry too. We were already on site so we got the job done. |

bobkezel: But is there any implication to this? There are no implications whatsoever. It's just done as a safety precaution. In the absence of not doing columns, I'd rather advice you do a weak concrete mixture to fill your block holes to that point. I want to believe your mason understands block bonds especially at the joints(edges/corners). |
