From your post, I can say I don't have the full information, but I can say that the collapse is despite the columns and not as a result of the columns. Columns and beams don't collapse structures.

It may be the soakaway design is not suitable for the soil condition or the design was poorly executed in some if not all aspect of the design. The soil may be more challenging for this type of traditional design.

Columns and beams when properly introduced with the right span make a safe structure.

You are sounding like building a soakaway/septic tank is an advanced AA++ work.
I'd assume you ask the Op more questions other than speculating to arrive at answers.
Columns/beams act as frames/sub frames in any structural element.


Can you also speculate the reason(s) behind this collapse?

In my previous brief story of using a 5" block(solid) instead of minimum 6" block being procured by my client. At the 4th course, the blocks were waving like a wind action was upon them. My mason carefully managed to put the 5th course. It got me wondering because I did not expect given the size of the tank. I had made provisions for columns but never intended to run a beam since my intention was to use 9" hollow blocks. But given the new situation I had to run a beam.

One: All soakaway/septic system should have columns - this is best engineering practice. When people come to you for advice, always recommend and encourage best practice. Soakaway without columns is cutting corners - Period.

For the poster to come here with that post, it may be true that someone on ground with knowledge of the soil condition may have recommended introduction of columns and beam which is a superior advice. But here you are I guess with no knowledge of the soil condition encouraging an inferior solution.

Two: After 5/6 courses, all round beam (chaining) should be introduced to prevent unintended collapse - best recommended civil engineering practice. After the next 5/6 courses, beam again and then deck.

Death from soakaway collapse in Nigeria is an unreported world. This is preventable death by spending just a fraction more to recommended best practice in health and safety.

Imagine Nigeria with poor quality blocks that will be constantly wet and soaked as a septic tank and then you construct such soakaway without columns and beam. - to me it's an accident waiting to happen especially during the raining season over time.

So building a safe soakaway is not a matter of choice like you posit. It's a conscious deliberate decision.

Engineering construction is applied sciences from knowledge gotten over a period on the field.
Yes, its advisable one stick to best engineering practices.
But what if a client does not have the resources to adhere to such or insist his/her way?
Will you abandon the job or act as an Engineer and proffer alternative solutions to get the job accomplished?

You need to have field experience to be able to build. Not all clients understands engineering best practice.
Be an Engineer and apply the knowledge.

Let me cut a story short....
A recent soakaway/septic tank I did for a client.....
After explaining what I intend to do, I requested for 9" hollow blocks, 16mm/12mm rods, etc....
Client and site manager went and purchased 5" solid blocks thinking it was 6"solid. I requested to see who supplied the blocks. He came and was on same side with the client. We argued over it, I got angry, my artisans got angry too.
We were already on site so we got the job done.

In the absence of not doing columns, I'd rather advice you do a weak concrete mixture to fill your block holes to that point. I want to believe your mason understands block bonds especially at the joints(edges/corners).

Depending on your location 3/8 sand stone differs. It's advisable you get the best quality if you intend using it for such purpose and use a proper mix ratio.

Yea, reverse osmosis is a good technology. There are quite simple apparatus that uses such technology, very pocket friendly and all there in the market.

Why not just get the external diameter, and make some partitions and leave the rest? For instance, instead of digging toilet, ante room, parlour dining, kitchen, store, all the rooms, etc. Why not just a selected few out of all those and then, do the full partitioning after the DPC has been done. Construction wise, that's not advisable. What you're thinking is called partial walls/walling.
You ought to differentiate between load bearing walls and non load bearing walls to be able to put that through. Depending on your house design wardrobe walls can be done in such way, etc, etc.
Traditionally walls on the DPC(super structure) are supposed to be aligned onto the walls beneath at the foundation level(sub structure). Not doing that may cause your DPC to cave in at such positions once there's soil settlement and it may affect the wall above.

I still believe he worked the backend in exchange for some money to acquit Saraki. If the case goes to trial the investigators will get to that revelation and it would incriminate a lot of people.....Onnoghen, Saraki, PDP, possibly Atiku. To save the embarassment Onnoghen has opted to resign.

He should have done the bold at the preliminary instead of letting us on the media wars trying to proove himself right.

That will not solve the problem and may likely not work. It's the same reason Boko Haram is still operating because they have help both from the inside and outside.

The best way to resolve such is everyone to arm themselves and form vigilante. All communities within that area should do it jointly whether they have been affected before or not.

You know, the governors were the first out of the block to accuse Buhari, and even tied in APC, of bias and dictatorship. So you are right they have lost the voice of reasoning and capacity to act as peacemakers on the case.

The best way out for the CJN is to recruit the AG.

Onnoghen's character is whats questioned, his judicial capacity is not in doubt, he is still a career judge. Therefore The AG, Mallami, can act as a professional witness to catalogue and brief the President on the career path of a lawyer and a judge, and why coming to a compromised deal might be better than a dead-end ruling.

Another option will be for Onnoghen to seek support from SANs in SW. I say this because Yoruba Lawyers command great respect and reverence from Government and SW is a partner in the Administration.

Both options will pay off greatly. By all means Mr Onnoghen should please put his ego and self to side for now and think about his family. This case could end with him going to prison. It will devastate the family. If I had capacity to speak influentially on his behalf I will do so for sake of his family. He appears to be a loving husband and father, he should be punished for his errors but he should not be condemned totally and denied his entitlements.

We want criminals to learn and adjust from their lessons, if we are cruel in the sentencing the chance to make correction will be lost.

If he is allowed to resign as the CJN he can remain in practice as a lawyer until retirement and his entitlement kicks in. If his resignation is rejected he can opt for early retirement but if that is also rejected then he is in deep trouble. An indictment will de-bar and de-robe him, his entitlement is canceled and he could be sentenced to prison.

Its important that SS Governors lead a team to Buhari to concede Onnoghen's error and plead for mercy on him.

There will always be a variation even with a detailed plan. That which varies should not be excessive.

If there are specifics to what you need in the design, etc, etc, you should let whoever is doing the drawings put it on.

I have long being a fan of moringa products due to the vast array of wonderful functions it does to the Human body and even to ruminants/broilers.

This topic is created with the mind to see how profitable moringa farming can be interms of the seedlings and the oil aspect. Moringa leafs and its powder market seem to be oversaturated.

The major hindrance to this project is availability of land and herdsmen wahala. Still searching for a place to lease/buy and may have to look elsewhere.

The attached pictures are nursery planted at around 22:00 hours on the 27th of March, 2019. So far, eight have germinated out of ten. I am planting these ones in my house.

The seeds are very expensive at about N250,000 for a 1000 seed quote including custom and transport to Nigeria from India.

A tree is expected to yield about 5kg per year after 2 years. Currently a kg of local moringa seeds is sold at about N1,800-N2,000.

What land type is good for such plant?
Will a matured tree withstand flood water?

The design will determine the price. But it should be within 18 -30M.
Price of land can range from 1-10M depending on which part of the city you're getting the land.
