Excellent point! Some of these books are good, and some are OK. These are obviously in the OP's opinion. You have to do your own due diligence and determine what works for you. For example, In the case of Java Development, In addition to Thinking In Java, I find very thorough, and will always recommend the following books. Ivor Hortons Beginning Java, Sun's Java Tutorial, Heads First Java (or any heads first book), Java in a nutshell. And it does not mean they are the greatest books out there. There are way too many books out there and what works for one person may not neccesarily work for the other.
@ebot (a sanu ):Not to take away from any of the books listed above but one must also ask, "greatest by whose definition and on what basis?" Again, not to take away from the post but one must always carry out their own independent research to verify things to be true for themselves. The aforementioned books could be "good" or "great" but not necessarily "the greatest".
|
Getting a resident permit at any of the Caribbean countries is not an easy task. Even Americans face a huge task trying to get one. Just about all jobs go to the locals first. Don't know about Trinidad and Tobago, however I have visited several Caribbean countries including Barbados, Jamaica, Cayman Island, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, St. Lucia, etc. They are all quite similar with a few differences here and there. The #1 source of revenue for most of them is tourism. You will hardly see any Nigerians in these countries, so you should take that into account. |
I do not think anyone can tell you about the future. It's a very dynamic environment. In my opinion, I'd say either of them will be fine. They are very similar, and the major difference being that one is a microsoft product and the other is by sun. I'd say visit forums that discuss them individually, or may be check out a book on them and see which you may prefer. |
In society like Nigeria's that allows polygamy, infidelity on the part of the men will not be considered a major issue like it would in a society that does not allow polygamy. So I think the acceptance of polygamy plays a major role in this issue. Again, this is just my opinion. sistawoman: |
It's obvious he does not really care how you feel. Sounds like he is very arrogant about it too. Are you totally dependent on this guy? Personally I would divorce his sorry ass as quickly as you can say "Jack Robinson". Don't stress yourself over it, and things will fall in place with you and your child. I do not think the other girls did anything wrong. He is the one that made it possible for them to call him. He probably told them you can't do anything about it. Well, you should let him know that you can take action. |
Very true, Afam. Static pages can only take you so far. There has to be some interaction with the user, and developing dynamic web pages (pages that talk to the back-end databases) are they way to go. However, the schools in Nigeria have done a total disservice to the current generation of computer science graduates. As you suggested, they have to learn and pickup application development skills on their own. It's true that programming is very rewarding, however it's also very challenging. So, I would not advice anyone that does not have OK analytical skills or that does not like problem solving to go into it. |
I agree. the punishment in Nigeria is not as severe. However, the punishment in the West and most other countries is quite severe. These folks just do not care. They want to live big by all means. These are the a$$ holes that make things difficult for most of us. Nigerians as a whole have this reputation because of people like these. I do not have mercy for anyone. They should lock them up and throw the keys away. |
It sounds like the password/unlock code has been typed in one too many times and the phone has been hard-locked. Usually you have to contact the manufacturer in order to resolve it. However, one of the guys here might have an idea. |
Thanks for the heads up. I planed on doing this daily when I visit for 10 days next week. Like you, I thought it's for a 24 hr. period. And, that's the way it should be. I am thinking their system only looks and calculates based on the date. So, it looks at the date it was initiated, and as long as you are within that date you are fine. They definitely need to update their application to also take the time into consideration when doing the calculation. In essence, it runs from 12.00 am to 11:59 PM. So, the earlier in the day (12.00am will be the best) you can initiate it the better. |
I just bought one with dual sims for my travels. So that I do not have to carry 3 phones every where I go. The one I bought is quadband. I am sure you bought a dual band one that will ONLY work outside North America. Got it on dealextreme and it works well so far. I have 2 international roaming sims in it and they show AT&T or tmobile on the screen depending on signal. Yes, the screen also shows 2 signal meters. So far so good, I will really test it when I visit Lagos in 10 days. EDIT: Thought I'D post the link. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13014
Bought one with double sim and found out it won't work here in the US cux of some band shit!
|
While still very expensive for the average Nigerian, I am certain the price will come down with time. Comparing what we get here in the US for the price to Nigeria is like comparing apples and oranges. So, may not necessarily be fair. Heck! I pay $19.99/month for unlimited data (at unreal 3G speeds!) including 200 sms. Again, with time, I expect the prices in Nigeria to come down somewhat. Ex Inferis: |
Wow! What a generalized statement. Because you may have had some issues with some folks abroad does not mean we all share the same views. Another totally baseless and senseless topic. Think about what you posted. You are asking him to ban every one outside Nigeria. So, what would be left to the travel forum. We can all learn one thing or another from each other, because we all have different views that we bring to the table. |
You can also google for Java servlets and JSP. You should see several examples that show how to connect a form in your JSP/HTML to a database using servlets as the middle layer/controller. |
Those numbers seem too high! However, the real problem is that our government and school system has failed us. You also have to consider how many are really employable out of the so called 60 million. Yes, they do have degrees, but how many can really perform up to the level of whatever their degree says. A good majority of our graduates are not well grounded. And that responsibility falls mostly on deplorable university system that exists in Nigeria. As I mentioned in another post, how can you have a so called computer science graduate that never wrote a single line of code? |
It sounds like you are in IT. Use your time there to pick up some skills (IT is constantly changing), brush up your resume and start looking for something else. Get the heck out once you secure something that suits you. I am not sure what IT jobs are like there, however they are quite challenging here. Because there is always something new to learn everyday. |
There has to be very large scale software development going on for there to be a need for a software tester. Software development is definitely going on in Nigeria, I am just not sure if they are at a very large scale. Most likely, they just do unite and detail testing and that should suffice for the small to medium applications thet are being developed. A good place to check though is the very large banks. The ones with a large IT staff may have a separate Software Tester/QA team. |
There are several. You first need to start with the Programmer Certification (SCJP), then you can go fo rthe others as you choose. The SCJP is a prerequisite for the other Java certifications offered by Sun. Here are some forums dedicated to the exams. http://saloon.javaranch.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?category=7 gorociano: |
October 2006. I will be there in 3 weeks though. |
Cheapest and best do NOT usually go hand-in-hand. What are your plans when you get to the UK? I am assuming someone will be meeting you there. Be ready to answer all sorts of questions at the airport, since your passport will be blank. Good luck! |
They do the same thing on this end. They can select you at random and search you. Nothing illegal there at all. Considering Nigerians reputation for drug trafficking, it not surprising that we are more likely to be selected. Until our folks stop giving us bad name all over the world, we will be subject to this kind of behavior. A lot of us Nigerians, even as US citizens, are sometimes subject to further scrutiny, questions, whenever we are returning to the US from Nigeria. It has never happened when I am returning from another country. |
Absolutely! texazzpete: |
Thanks, Dual Core. I'll be using MTN during my visit next month. Dual Core: |
Quick question for anyone that knows. Say, I visit Nigeria next month and I buy an MTN sim card, is it 3G or even data enabled? I already have the settings on my phone from a couple of threads here. Just want to know if all sim cards are data enabled, be it 3G or not. That's the way they work on this end. |
I concur. it will have to depend on your specialization and your experience. I would imagine someone with several years of application development, or a specifically a Java Tech Lead/Architect, with solid experience in the US should not have too much of a hard time finding a job in Naija. Of course there has to be companies that are developing enterprise level applications. Jobs that require these skills are plentiful here, and they pay very well. |
Oh, Yes. they are definitely worth the cost. Not only is it a good time to get away with the family and spend some quality time, we always look forward to it. Our family vacation has included several cruises to quite a few caribbean islands, Europe vacation (London & Paris), and of course Disney. The cruises are easy to plan since it's all inclusive. |
Computer Science/Programming happens to be different from most other fields. It's one field that practical training is crucial to one's ability to be successful doing it. Theory will always have value, however the it's very important to get hands on with programming while in school. That's why, at least here in the US, the programming assignments through out the semester, are usually about 80%- 85% of the final grade. The written test account for the rest. As someone who has been in this field for a while, I conduct interviews, mentor junior developers, and I can tell you, there is nothing you can read in the books that can replace the hands-on experience you will get from actually sitting at the computer writing code. How in the world can programming be taught without actually interacting with the PC writing code. It's like teaching someone to become a mechanic without actually have them work on a car/machine. It needs to start from the top. the schools need to equipped with appropriate equipment, and the computer science curriculum needs to be revamped. |
Any airline can lose luggage. I know some may lose it more than others, however, nothing is guaranteed. I have flown Air France once to Chicago and it was quite pleasant. In my experiences, on all the airlines, service on the US ->Europe leg is usually excellent. The Europe ->Lagos leg is okay most of the time. Bottom line, you will more than likely experience different levels of service between both legs of your trip. The service level drops somewhat when they are going to Africa, period! |
They will find out once they do an audit. They will do a reversal of all the deposits, and your account will be in a big negative. |
No culture accepts cheating period! So, sistawoman, while it may seem so in the case of some Nigerian women, in general, most women will NOT just openly accept her husbands infidelity. If she does, she is probably doing her own thing too. Now, the fact that Nigeria is a polygamous society definitely makes infidelity somewhat acceptable to some women. Now, you may not see too many guys of the current generation pick up another wife, but the fact that polygamy is still accepted in the freaking society, makes it difficult for some to accept that it's immoral to have an affair or to have a mistress outside. It was probably tolerated in the old days. However, I think most women these days would rather move on from the marriage rather than put up with that crap! And that's likely one of the reasons why about 50% of Nigerians marriages in the US end in divorce! There is no reason to fault sistawoman for asking this question. She asked for information, and we should try to educate her as much as possible. |
