On your phone's contact, associate a silent ringer with her number.
Phones › Re: Unlocked International Phones? by Bossman(m): 9:29pm On Mar 18, 2008
Well, I am using a number of world phones each has it's own pros/cons. However I am quite satisfied with them all.

My primary phone for  is a Treo 750 smartphone. It's a little on the heavy side, but it's a work horse!Voice quality is very good, data, web browsing etc. It uses the windows mobile 5.0 operating system. Pocket explorer, word, excel, powerpoint, windows media player, and a whole lot more. I have installed several java applications such opera browser, opera mini, on it it without any problems.

Another phone I use the most is a samsung Blackjack. It's also a smartphone. it has all the qualities of the treo 750, however it's very light. The music also sounds crisper and clearer on this one.

These phones which I use sometimes are not bad either Moto V551 and Moto SLVR L7.

Again, these are all world phones that will work in any country that has GSM since thay have all 4 GSM bands. The treo and blackjack are also 3g phones. However, only the treo has the 3g bands used in Nigeria. It has 850/1900/2100. The blackjack only has the 3g bands used in the US 850/1900 HSPDA.

You may want to check out the phone reviews at phonescoop, gsmarena, cnet, etc. for more detailed info.  Botom line, it depends on what you are looking for in a phone. If you do not use much data, then I would not recommend a smartphone. We get unlimited data here for a small fee, so using a smartphone is a no brainer!

You can get any of these world phones at several onlite outlets, it all depends on your location.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "unlocked international phones" Are you talking about a quadband phone with all the 4 GSM bands 850/900/1800/1900 (also called World phones)?

morenike09:
Anyone knows any great unlocked international phones? want to know from someone who uses/used those kind of phone. . and if you could add any website for those kinds of phone, i'll appreciate kiss
Programming › Re: Ajax Guru's In The House by Bossman(m): 6:16pm On Mar 18, 2008
I do not develop in Ajax yet, I will soon, and I am reading up on it. After talking to a number of colleagues, they recommended "Ajax In Action". So, I grabbed it and I must say it's a very good and well written book.
Programming › Re: Programmers With Experience by Bossman(m): 6:07pm On Mar 18, 2008
I just want to mention that , design patterns, while a good understanding of them will help you as a developer, most of them they do not come to play at all when it comes to developing procedural programs using a language like COBOL or even C for that matter. So, I would not neccesary say a COBOlLprogrammer that does not know about patterns is not a good programmer.

As mentioned, most of these patterns are built into very popular fremeworks these days. Such as struts, Hibernate,  etc.

I personally use/have used the following petterns in the web applications I develop. MVC (specifically Struts), DAO (hibernate and straight JDBC calls), service locator, View Helper, Intercepting Filter.  These also happens to be called the J2EE patterns in the "Java world"
Travel › Re: Where Is Your Dream Vacation? by Bossman(m): 10:51pm On Mar 17, 2008
Any warm place that I can spend quality time with my family. Too damn cold in Chicago right now. Heck! I am ldefinitely looking forward to my 7 day cruise to the Caribbean starting on this Saturday the 22nd. Will be visiting the following countries/islands. Puerto Rico, Barbados, Antigua, St. Lucia, St. Thomas, USVI, and the British Virgin Islands.   The kids keep counting how many days to go.  smiley

Would definitely love to visit Hawaii.
Phones › Re: Downloading Wit Pains by Bossman(m): 5:58pm On Mar 17, 2008
You can only use blutoth to communicate with another blutooth enabled device. As for downloading, you are using data, be it GPRS, EDGE, 3G. And you will be charged per kilobyte. Unless you have an unlimited data package, like just ebout everyone with data on this end. Downloading a game, on a pay per use basis will wipe out your credit quickly! See if you can download the game to your PC over the net, then use a data cable or bluetooth to copy it to your phone.
Computers › Re: Broadband Internet Services in Nigeria by Bossman(m): 5:52pm On Mar 17, 2008
You would think there would be something in place by now. Until reliable broadband service is available to the masses, and kind of internet business or ecommerce will be too much pain to undertake.
Travel › Re: Which City/town Is Best For A Nigerian To Live In The U.s by Bossman(m): 11:26pm On Mar 10, 2008
Any US city is fine. It all depends on what you make or can make out of it. It depends on what you will be doing. Do you want to be in a big city, will you be going to school, etc.
Career › Re: Sincere: Advice On My Career by Bossman(m): 4:46pm On Feb 29, 2008
I agree. Get your HND and get the heck out! 10 years is a very long time. However, your degree should open up better opportunities. You seem like a very devoted person. Not sure why it's taking your Managers to realize what value you bring to the organization and show their appreciation.
Phones › Re: What Type Of Phone Are You Using? by Bossman(m): 10:44pm On Feb 28, 2008
It depends on the day and occasion. During the week, I use my Treo 750. On the weekend I use my Samsung blackjack or SLVR L7
Phones › Re: Strange Phone, No Sim Port. by Bossman(m): 10:35pm On Feb 28, 2008
While I am aware that this is an old thread. I just want to mention that I am 100% sure that it's a CDMA phone. Likely a SprintPCS or Verizon phone or one of their MVNOs.

Someone mentioned that even if it was a USA GSM phone that it will not work there. That's false. If it has the appropriate bands it will function. While you will still see some dual band (850/1900) phones sold hare in the US, majority of the phones sold here by AT&T and tmobile are quad band(850/900/1800/1900).

almondjoy gave you excellent advice already, well done!

It's an unfortunate situation. However, it's done! What's left if now and the future. And there are not strict laws in Nigeria that will make sure the father supports his child. Even if he has 10 wives already. I just can't believe how some people cannot be man enough to take care of their responsibilities. May be it's because I love kids a lot. smiley

Don't worry. Just face your education and try your best for you baby. No need to be sad over anything. Kids are actually a lot of joy. I know it will be a little tough, however, I wish you the best of luck.
Events › Re: How Necessary Are Big Weddings? by Bossman(m): 11:55pm On Feb 26, 2008
A BIG or small wedding does not necessarily mean the wedding will last. Whoever wants to have one and can afford it should surely do so. What matters is the love that the parties involved have for each other. Heck! BIG wedding today, divorce tommorrow, what's the point. I have seen people have BIG weddings and divorce before they finish paying off the debt from the wedding.

Programming › Re: Shouldn't There Be A "software Engineering" Section In Nairaland Forums? by Bossman(m): 6:05pm On Feb 26, 2008
Was just trying to get the point accross that they are used interchangably and not differentiated out there in the "real world".  I am fully aware that therritically, they are different. I happen to have a degree in Comp. Science and Mathematics. Heck! Java did not even exist when I was in college, we used ADA for the software engineering classes, data structures, etc. But, I really do not care what I am called be it a programmer, developer, or whatever.

That's fine if you think I am lacking in academic refinement or do not know anything about software engineering. After all we are all entitled to our opinions.

tju38:
LOL grin This is typically what would be uttered by a "programmer" lacking in academic refinement. I think you should stick to programming as I'm sure you don't know the first thing about software engineering. A good engineer cannot get by on rhetoric alone. cool

Just take your time with your descisions, and do what's best for you. I wish you good luck. Wow! it was ind of long and tough on the eye reading your story. I know you wanted to pour it all out. However, a summary and possible better use of writing skills would have made it easier to read.
Programming › Re: Shouldn't There Be A "software Engineering" Section In Nairaland Forums? by Bossman(m): 11:44pm On Feb 25, 2008
I see no reason for it. It will just be total duplication of postings. I will say it again, Software Engineering and programming are exactly the same thing. What topics are going to be discussed there that cannot be discussed in the programming forum? The principles that both are based on are the same. I have been in this filed for quite some time both as a consultant and employee. They are NOT differentiated on this end at all. I guess it's different in Nigeria.

tju38:
Your angle is that not everyone sees "programming" as a sub-section of "software engineering". This is a fact, therefore I agree.

Can we then have a "software engineering" forum under "Technology" then, for those more interested in Software Engineering than Programming?
Programming › Re: Shouldn't There Be A "software Engineering" Section In Nairaland Forums? by Bossman(m): 7:53pm On Feb 25, 2008
I have also observed that there is lot of "name glorifications" amongst Nigerians in Nigeria. People like to be called/addressed as Engr., Dr, professor, etc.

The bottom line, a software engineer, a developer, a programmer are just the same thing. People use them interchangeably.

Heck! There is even a forum here called "webmasters". I wonder what makes someone qualify as a webmaster.
Programming › Re: Shouldn't There Be A "software Engineering" Section In Nairaland Forums? by Bossman(m): 6:52pm On Feb 25, 2008
No. Programming and Software Engineering are the same thing. They are used interchangably, at least on this end. As posted above, how would you differentiate the two?

I just want to clarify for those that do not know, that there is a difference between opera mini and opera for mobiles. It seems like they are being mixed up in some of the postings above.
Programming › Re: Tutorial On Java Micro Edition, Very Urgent! by Bossman(m): 11:37pm On Feb 21, 2008
Unless someone is really into J2ME development, they likely will not have it. Being that this is a specialized Java development, the likelyhood of you finding someone here that actually has a
tutorial for you is slim. And, even if they have a tutorial, they probably got it off the internet. I have read a number of articles all of which I got off the net. I also know that there is a tutorial at sun's site. Hopefully, someone here will send you one.
Webmasters › Re: E-commerce Suffers Setback In Nigeria by Bossman(m): 7:15pm On Feb 20, 2008
Until some form of "ID system" is established, where by verification can be made that regarding ones identity, address, phone number, etc., trying to do any kind of e-commerce will be difficult. Two very important parts of e-commerce security, Authorization and Authentication need to be established before any kind of e-commerce can be successful.
Travel › Re: Visiting Nigeria With Us Passport by Bossman(m): 9:47pm On Feb 19, 2008
OP, as alimondjoy said, you are better off taking a Valid Nigerian passport with you rather than trying to get a visa on your American passport. If you passport will be needing renewal, you better get a head start. Had to renew mine in 2006 before an October 06 trip to Lagos. I followed all the instruction on the American Embassy's website and chose to send it to the Atlanta office. I did so in March, way ahead of time you would think, since the processing time was supposed to be 2 weeks.

After about a month of not hearing anything, I decided to give them a call. Then I was informed that the passport machine has not been functioning for about 2 months. And they did not have the common sense of posting something on their out-dated website. I called there several times, each time with a different answer. They actually had to fly the folks to fix the machines (the Washington DC embassy's was broken too) in from Germany. The idiot even suggested that he can send my passport back to me in my prepaid envelope, so that I can send it to the NY office. Talking about complete inefficiency. What's wrong with they sending the passports to NY, or getting someone in the US to fix the machines? Anyway I got my passport back around Late August. Bottom line, if you plan on dealing with the Nigerian embassy, give yourself a lot of time, and get ahead of the ball game!
Programming › Re: How Can I Become A Good Web Programmer (esp If I Dont Have Aptech Bucks) by Bossman(m): 8:16pm On Feb 14, 2008
Very good advice from other posters. It is going to take a lot of practice and time to get proficient at it. There are so many tutorials out there, just determine what you would like to develop in and go with it. This is one field where you do NOT have to have a degree in ti to be proficient at it. However, you do have to love development and be ready to invest a lot of time in it. It will pay off in the end. Even wehn you start doing it professionally, you will have to keep learning. Because things are changing quickly. As someone that has been developing webapps for over 8 years, I am am still reading articles, books, etc. So that I can stay on top of the technology. You can go as far as you want to.

Romance › Re: 34 Years Old And No Husband by Bossman(m): 12:36am On Feb 13, 2008
Not a big deal at all. Plus, you already have kids. Now, does he have kids, want kids, or do you plan on having kids together, you have to consider everything. Also, has he ever been married. You should really have a talk with him. Then you will know where he is coming from and what his plans are. Heck! He is 38, and not getting any younger. smiley

Read and follow this carefully. If after doing so you still have problems, I would reinstall the JDK. Also, make sure you have ; at the end of your path.
