Phones › Re: Blocking Of Stolen Phone by Bossman(m): 5:48pm On May 13, 2008
There is nothing you can do about the phone. As Nigeria does not yet do phone "black listing". However, you should at least call your provider to deactivate the sim card.

It just plain sucks! It's just one of the many things that reduces the productivity of the average working Nigerian. After spending that much time commuting, how many hours is left to work and be productive, before it's time to head on back home. Until the basic infrastucture of power, water, good roads, etc. are in place in that country, getting anything achieved will nto be easy.
Travel › Re: Lagos To Havana Cuban Air Flight Fare, Any Idea. by Bossman(m): 11:24pm On May 09, 2008
I was just going to ask what are you going to Cuba for. As per kenflipper, you better have a valid reason for wanting to go there. it's a complete dead end! You have a whole lot more freedom in Nigera than Cuba. Now, if you are going there on business, I wonder what kind of business too. Flights to Cuba will be quite expensive too, and as already posted, your choices are very limited.
Programming › Re: A Java Programmer To Be Needs Your Help Please! by Bossman(m): 10:08am On May 08, 2008
You just need the SE (Standard Edition). So download Java SE.

chucket:
Bossman,

I am at java.sun.com site.
I've gone to downloads and there were som many options like
java EE, java SE, java ME, java FX.
Which one do I need to download?
Programming › Re: A Java Programmer To Be Needs Your Help Please! by Bossman(m): 9:43am On May 08, 2008
The version should be in the installation path/folder. It will be something like j2sdk1.4.1_02 (depending on your version). Anothr option is to just go to sun's site and download it again.

I googled for "latest jdk version": You do not neccesarily have to use the latest.

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-12,GGLG:en&q=latest+jdk+version

chucket:
Thanks so much.
In the place you said I should input path "jdk version".
How do I know the version of the one I uploaded?
You know it was sent to me from Nigeria and it was on a
writeable cd.
Or do you suggest I discard this one and go to the sun site you gave me?

Sorry for bothering you ok?

Thanks for being there for me!
Have a nice day.
Programming › Re: Java World: Questions And Solutions (java Only Pls) by Bossman(m): 9:17pm On May 07, 2008
I responded in the thread below already. As for the syntax of the language, there are zillions of books online. However, as from learning to program, a lot is going to depend on you. Programming is not like most other subjects.  It's all about problem solving. You analyze a problem and you come up with ways to solve it. It also takes quite some time especially in the beginning.

In my opinion, it's like asking someone to teach you how to think.

Programming › Re: Please, I Need Someone To Help Me On Java: by Bossman(m): 8:54pm On May 07, 2008
Exactly where are you going wrong? Okay, your code compiled, and you can't execute. what's the exact error? There are several Java related threads in this forum. See if any of those will help. If not, post the error you are getting and guys here will try to help.

You said you have been taught Java, but you do not understand it. You do not understand anything or there are some certain things you have having problems with? I would also suggest you try to get beginners book on-line and start practicing with the examples etc. Firstly, make sure you environment is set up and you can compile and execute a Java program. Again, search the forum or internet at large for answers. There is no point reapeating the same things that have been discussed to death in these forums.
Travel › Re: How Much Is Lagos To New York Flight ? by Bossman(m): 12:46am On May 06, 2008
I am assuming Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's not a major airport at all. So, you will fly into any of the major airports and then connect to Tulsa. Personally, I would suggest you book all parts of the flight with the same airline if possible. Rather than book them separately. So, that if something goes wrong, a delay or whatever, and you miss your connecting flight, the airline will be responsible for getting you to your final destination.

Travel › Re: Egyptian Police Shoot Nigerian Woman ! by Bossman(m): 12:39am On May 06, 2008
This is very wrong. As long as she was not a threat to the police officers, she should not have been shot with real bullets. That's why there are rubber bullets, stun guns, etc. The goal is to stop her from crossing the border, and they are more appropriate ways to achieve that.
Family › Re: Middle Class And Upper Class Children by Bossman(m): 7:14pm On May 02, 2008
Pure nonsense! It's probably a Nigeria thing. On this end, nobody cares who your father is, because you can be nothing today and be big tommorrow and vice-versa. When I was in Nigeria I mingled with everyone regardless of who they are. Even when I visit, I sit outside talk and have beer with the drivers, etc. me and the driver sit at the same table to eat. It's not a big deal at all. However, this class thing is very common in Nigeria.
Travel › Re: BA Explains Their Actions. by Bossman(m): 6:30pm On May 02, 2008
The subject should probably be changed to "British Airways explains why they acted the way they did" or something like that. . This is definitely not an apology. It's just an explanation to back up their decision.
Travel › Re: Best Airports You Have Been To? by Bossman(m): 3:47pm On Apr 30, 2008
I agree. I was surprised to see Miami mentioned. That's theoldest airport I have been to. And, I have been to quite a few.

Detroit's airport is pretty new. The indoor train is unique too.

BTW, Chicago's O'Hare also has a train that you can use to connect from one terminal to another and to remote/long-term parking.

Programming › Re: A Java Programmer To Be Needs Your Help Please! by Bossman(m): 6:10pm On Apr 29, 2008
You have got some good advice already. I would also suggest the Java Tutorial from Sun's website and Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. The latter is a little advanced, but you will gain a lot from it. The Deitel book suggested uses a lot of swing in all its examples, and that can sometimes be in the way of letting you grasp the core concepts.
Programming › Re: Urgent Help With Vb Coding! by Bossman(m): 6:05pm On Apr 29, 2008
I do not know what this game is about. However, here is a suggestion. Write down the steps it takes to play the game. For example, may be player A makes a move, etc. Also, from you posting it looks like the user/player has to login in order to be able to play the game. And the login information will be maintained in MS Access database. So, you know on your VB form you will need to retrieve the user/player login info and match it against the database. May be the score also needs to be stored in the DB. Also, you will have to read data from a file. So, make sure you at least know how to do file I/O and link VB to MS Access. Once you have the steps of the came, you can then try to pseudocode these steps. Hope you get the idea.
Business › Re: Am I Obsessed With Saving Money? by Bossman(m): 7:04pm On Apr 25, 2008
No, you are not obsessed with saving money. Just like any Suze Orman, Dave Ramsey, etc. will tell you, it's not how much you make that will make you a rich or be able to live comfortably, it's how much you can save and invest. I am not to the extreme, however, I lean towards investing and saving quite a bit too. And, that has definitely made a lot of difference in the person I am today. With investing, be it stocks, mutual funds, real estate, you will lose some here and there, however on the long run, you will come out way on top. I would add though, it also helps to have a good job. At least it makes it easier.

Wow! so the contract note is manually written in ink. Then you can't really know exactly the purchase price. What's on the contract is it! We use a so called "trusted" broker, but,

eudio:
hi fellow nairalanders,

please, how do i know the actual prices my shares were bought on the floor of the stock exchange? apart from wht was quoted in my contract note.

like wht somebody said sometime ago, that contract note na paper and biro, that is, it can be altered.
Politics › Re: Are Titles Really Important? by Bossman(m): 9:48am On Apr 24, 2008
I agree. those with Phd's, and Medical Doctors should be addressed appropriately. However, in general, Nigerians just place too much emphasis on titles. Nigerians put all kins of meaningless titles that they are not entitled to on their business cards. You will not see Engineers or Architects on this end address themselves as Engr. Joe or Arch. Joe. Only in Nigeria!

Even on this forums, a lot of people call that do know jack about what the principles of engineering entails, call themselves an engineer! I see posts from people that call themselves a telecoms engineer, GSM engineer, etc. because they know a little bit about how a GSM phone works. What a bunch of nonsense! Some so called software engineers can not program/code their way out of a brown bag if given the opportunity. I definitely do not want to be called an engineer because I do not see it as a big deal at all. It's what I bring to the table that matters. What about those folks that have never stepped on an airplane and they are being addresses as Alhadji.
Politics › Re: Are Titles Really Important? by Bossman(m): 9:36pm On Apr 23, 2008
Titles are not important at all. It's just a bunch of crap! It's only in Nigeria, and probably Africa in general, that people place emphasis on that nonsense! It's not your title that matters it's who you are and what you have up there.
Phones › Re: Get A Phone Number, Given The Imei Number: How Possible? by Bossman(m): 8:11pm On Apr 22, 2008
Yes, the IMEI identifies the mobile device. However, the phone number is tied to the sim card. So, no, you cannot determine the phone number from the IMEI # and network operator. Obviously, if a call is placed the caller ID (even if blocked) and IMEI # is transmitted.
Programming › Re: Database Issue by Bossman(m): 5:57pm On Apr 22, 2008
Even though this sounds like homework, and it will definitely help you on the long run, if you take a stab at it, and then post back with what you have and where you are having problems, here is my suggestion. Take a paper copy of the typical student grade/report, write down every information on there, then determine what are the possible data types you will need to represent this information, write that next to each piece of information, post it here when you are done.

Your requirements are somewhat vague! The goal here is to analyze the requirements, write down your own understanding of it, get back to whoever gave you this requirements, and ask questions, and verify if what you have is in-line with what they want. Then go from there.
Programming › Re: Netbeans Vs Eclipse Vs Jboss by Bossman(m): 2:46pm On Apr 20, 2008
Most of these IDEs are very similar. It's all a matter of choice, which one is free, availability of plugins, and what you really want in an IDE. Personally, I use eclipse on my laptop. Primarily because all the clients I have worked at have always used IBM products, be it Websphere (WSAD), RAD 7. Eclipse is just like RAD 7, but will need quite a few readily available plugins (eg. Tomcat) to make it a full J2EE IDE. However, for a freely available IDE, it's very good.

As for automatic compilation of source in eclipse when saving, as mentioned by javadevil, these are all settings that can be enabled/disabled, and I would think the other IDEs have something like that.
Travel › Re: Cancun, Mexico by Bossman(m): 9:29pm On Apr 18, 2008
Cancun is a major vacation spot. especially for US tourists during spring break, which happens to be at the moment. So, I doubt that the US govt. will issue such warning. As long as you are at the major vacation spots, which is pretty much what Cancun is known for, you should be fine.

Hope you are having a wonderful time landis. I was there with my family a couple of years ago around this time. It was awesome!

I was just about to say, wait oh. Just about every time I go home, we arrive late at night. Usually between 9 - 11 PM. Actually, most flights from Europe arrive at night. I have never had any problems. Obviously, it helps that we have people waiting to pick us up, and the house is right in Ikeja. Having said that, sweetberry, you should be able to get to a hotel without any problems.

ernal:
Well i still believe we should believe in our own country and leave lasting impression for ourselves, I have traveled and arrived dead late and never had problem with checkinto an hotel around ikeja before i finally go home, come on Lagos is no Hell!
Travel › Re: Tell Us About The City Where You Live by Bossman(m): 3:59pm On Apr 16, 2008
Chicago is one of the largest cities in US. It's the 3rd largest city in the US, and is also considered the cleanest "big city" in the US. It also has a very diverse population. Just about every country is represented here. On the east of downtown is lake Michigan. It has a very dynamic downtown and excellent architecture. I actually live in the suburbs (about 50 miles from downtown), but commute downtown for work. There are lots of things to do in the city. Several African markets. We have at least 7 Nigerian restaurants. Of course, plenty Niger here.  It's a happening city with lots of things to do outdoors, especially in the summer. However, our winters can be brutal!

See wonderful pictures of the beautiful city here.

Wow! It seems like they have really gone down the drain. As I posted above, it was okay when I flew them almost 3 years ago. However, out of the 30 or so reviews I read here, only 1 positive review. I only read the first 4 pages

http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews-all-7871.html

Their current (regular) price for Chicago - Lagos is cheaper than the other airlines, but not by a whole lot. So, why such bad service?
Travel › Re: Flying With Iberia Airline by Bossman(m): 4:03pm On Apr 14, 2008
Some circumstances warrant checking in a laptop. I had to in 2005 when I flew Iberia from Chicago to Lagos. I did not want to haul two 17" laptops in my backpack. I had mine, and I was taking one home for my sister. Good thing there were no mishaps. Obviously, one of the reasons to travel with a laptop is to be able to use it, so checking it in does not make much sense in most cases.

As for the ORD - LOS flight, the leg from ORD to MAD was not bad at all. It was not one of the newer planes, however the food, service, and entertainment was OK. Yes, the very long layover was a pain. The madrid to Lagos was so, so. I made sure I eat before boarding, so I slept almost through out. They did serve some food though. The same thing on the way back.

I am not complaining, because this was the cheapest I have ever flown ORD to LOS. It was only $750 (a special they were running to Europe/Africa then). The normal price is almost double that.

Travel › Atlanta To Lagos Flight By Delta - Any Experiences? by Bossman(op): 9:35am On Apr 08, 2008
Has anyone taken this flight, if so, how is it? Is it on time both in and out, any customs delays on arriving back in Atlanta? Please post your experience if you have.

I am thinking about going this route next month. However, I only have a 3 hr window between arriving back and making my connection to Chicago. I know nothing is guaranteed, I just want to get comments from those that have taken this flight to Lagos.

Gamine, as mentioned above, go for whatever is in demand where you are. However, whatever you chose be it C++, Java, etc., just make sure you get a very good grasp of software development principles at large. By doing so, you should be able to transiton to another programming language wittout much difficulty, if the need arises. The programing language is really the tool to get the job done. However, a very good understanding of the principles will go a long way.

Phones › Re: Subsidy Lock 4 Foreign Phone by Bossman(m): 9:20pm On Mar 31, 2008
Usually if a phone (Specifically a GSM phone) asks for the subsidy code it means it's locked to a specific carrier, and needs to be unlocked either by getting the code from the carrier or via a 3rd party. However, that particular phone is a Sprint/Nextel IDEN phone. It will not work on any of the GSM carriers in Nigeria or anywhere in the world for that matter. AFAIK, that phone can only be used on the sprintPCS/Nextel network in the USA. In essence, you have a paper weight.
