Sorry, I got emotional with my previous post. There was an all out jihad in Kwara state at a point...it is painful when you are at the recieving end from a protagonist you take as a neighbor and friend.

I agree with the fact that external preachers should not be allowed except if it is under the auspices of the FCS and for Christian students alone. As a student of FGC Ilorin in those days, we enjoyed the diversity of the ministers who taught us in the FCS.

It's unfortunate that even though we carry religion on our heads, we don't live what we preach and everything (including religion) is just an opportunity to make money or have power/control.
The ban is for both Muslim and Christian preachers, as far as I can tell. If we did live our religions, we'd likely have a much better nation.

Good morning.
In principle, you may be correct but in practice, you are totally wrong.

You don't understand.
I went to a mission school that ended up becoming Governments. The school used to be among the best in the state. Now after several years of the so called government running, the school is not fit for learning. The structures are dilapidated. There is segregation in appointment as teachers in the school (more than 70% of the teachers are Muslims). Christian teachers are posted to the suburbs/villages around.

The truth of the matter is that government use the schools to siphon money for their cronies.

Now, for mission schools that are pure government initiated or Islamic mission initiated, the FCS cannot build a chapel. Almost 90% of teachers are Muslims (except in the suburbs).

Trust me, you won't send your ward to a Kwara government funded school in search of quality education except you are broke.
I once visited a teacher in a government secondary school in Lagos and saw a jss student preaching to her mates when they were meant to be learning maths. In my Osun State, government schools have no teachers and rely on mostly unskilled and unmotivated corpers whose sole aim is how many students they can screw.

You are correct. I would not send my child to a government school because usually, they are crap, both Christian and Muslim government funded schools. Neither is as well run as some private Muslim and Christian schools.

All the same, the article is about external preachers coming to the schools to preach. And this shouldn't be allowed as they are not part of the schools teaching staff.

Rosskii:
Why doesn't Al Jazeera do a documentary on Nigeria's diversification efforts, say in the agro-allied industries?

Why don't they tour the rice processing industries being set up all over the country, showing a country moving to diversify from oil dependency, and create self-sufficiency in food?

Such a documentary will help attract investors and help the very people in poverty they love to show.

Why don't they do a documentary on the FG's school feeding programme - the largest school feeding programme in Africa - that's feeding millions of our kids for free in school?

Or what about the ongoing rail revolution? Rail infrastructure lowers business costs, which will help grow prosperity. The strides we are making in that sector are worth covering. For goodness sakes' we are setting up factories to BUILD the trains ourselves, as we speak. Why does Al Jazeera ignore that?

Why don't they do a documentary on Eko Atlantic - the largest single ongoing project in Africa today, the African Dubai, set to employ hundreds of thousands of Nigerians in the years ahead?

I guess all that would be far too 'positive' in their endless quest to air negative news about Nigeria.

Hakeem12:
I just read about a woman today born without a uterus who gave birth to a baby, this was achievable with uterus transplant from a diseased donor. An almost impossible feat till science made it possible. Science will and continue to do more for humans on earth than a fictional Jesus or Mohammad ever will.
Some would say "Jesus or Mohammed" did this. Pity is many can't understand how an idea ("Jesus or Mohammed" ), evolved into science, and can't see science in "God said, 'Let there be Light'". They can't see God evolving at all. But we find its because they do not see, or in non religio, they understand not. And being the measure of things, their understanding is how things are. Yet, all you do is call the pointing finger the moon.

Hakeem12:
The funniest and narcissistic thing about religious people is every one of them, no matter the religion they practice, believe they were born into the right religion. In their minds, others are going to hell, but them alone will make heaven. Come on, how stupid is that? If you are born in America, you are more likely to be a Christian, born in Pakistan, more likely a Muslim, more of a geographic thing.
You are obviously narrow in your experience of people. And you measure religion by the few you have come across. Are you aware at all that religious books are huge, and few read them?

Here's a verse from the Quran stating the error of your assumption above:

O you men! surely We have created you from male and a female, and made you tribes and families that you may know each other; surely the most honorable of you with Allah is the one among you most careful (of his duty); surely Allah is all Knowing and Aware. (49:13)

See. "Careful of his duty", and not, going about thinking one is righteous and other's are damned.

And in Christianity, we have the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, the proplogue of which states: To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable.

It is not religion that makes people "believe they were born into the right religion and others are going to hell", hakeem. Even you, who I assume is not religious, seem to think your thinking is the right thinking and that of religious people would lead them to hell. It must be the thinking you adopted from where you were born, though I'm certain you would argue you are different.

You still don't understand it,?.. What solution did Jesus provide for the white prior to the age of enlightenment,?.. "and since it's introduction to Africans what solution has it provided for us..
The age of enlightenment came out of the age that preceeded it, and by my own recollection, that age was full of Jesus! As for "since it's introduction to Africans", school, to name one, you writing in English, another. You'd likely do neither if not for "white man".

sonmvayina:
China resisted it's introduction to their society.. They developed at their own pace.. Look where they are now.. India is not far behind.
China's adoption of Buddhism from India over 2000 years ago would be the equivalent. They actually sent to India to beg for it. See too how they have adopted communism and capitalism but resist Islam and Christianity. They are smart like that, caring not so much about the cat's colour so long as it catches mice for them.

sonmvayina:
Why did we not take the Education like India did and reject their Jesus... Was it not possible..
I doubt you'd be comparing Nigeria to China and India if you knew their very very long history! India had an advanced system of their own like China did, both with extensive detailed word and school, which we lacked, and which made it less possible for us to "reject their Jesus". We would have rejected it if we too had a system of our own that we considered superior to Jesus.

So, to your question. "Do you seriously think that if Jesus was the answer to anything, the white man will give him to us?"

My answer is yes, the white man did give it to you, though you would need to understand that "Jesus" is a lot more than what you are assuming Jesus to be (think of it as a horse on which other things like democracy, a central bank, a standing army, regulated schools, capitalism, liberalism, rode on), but just as we have Nigerians who hate others and would sell their own people as slaves - "white people" waited at the coast for us to sell them our own people from the interior that they could not penetrate - so too do we, like them, have people who fight for the emancipation of others, through education, or rather, giving you Jesus, which we hope would open your eyes so that you know how to make your learning of and about Jesus, the "answer to anything".

If the Church did once represent light in a scary place, then I feel certain we can fill the Church with individuals who represent the Church as a "light in a scary place" today if scary places still need enlightening.

That said, I doubt the validity of your "Once". There are many today who claim the Church is a light in their scary place.

Most of us on this forum are educated and of age... Some of us have first had experiences with white people.. Given what we know about them and also learned about them. Do you seriously think that if Jesus was the answer to anything, the white man will give him to us?
One great pity about most on here is they do 'religion', as in, base their opinion on their beliefs and not on what they conclusively know. One sees this reflected in the assumptions we make when we use terms without defining what they mean like your use of the word "Jesus" with no definition of what you mean by it whilst assuming your understanding is everyone else's. Narrowness of thought or the overestimation of one's capabilities to comprehend might make one think Jesus is only what one reads in a Bible and according to one's own capability to understand, but anyone who has done a tiny amount of research would know that the word 'Jesus' requires a whole lot more delving into than a literal uninformed understanding. Let me therefore give you one definition of Jesus to show you the forest in eyes. Do note that it is one, and not definitive.

"In the beginning was the Word (λόγος, logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

There, Jesus Christ in a nutshell, though we must admit the "white people" also brought us Adam and Eve, and Moses, Abraham, Samuel, Samson, Ruth, Mary, Susanna, Peter, James and Paul, to name only a few randoms from the Bible, plus all other learning that has come through it and "white people" in the last 2000 or so years - cars, tap water, the internet, schools, critical thinking skills, etc.

Those who don't know history would not know that those who brought us Jesus had to fight to have Jesus for themselves. The book that taught about him was kept in an unreadable written language for the majority of their time until those who read it began disseminating its content to the masses, eventually forming education institutions to teach its reading then going further by translating it into the language of the masses, and dying to do so. Learning the Jesus book along with other books, formalised the language they have today and freed people by giving them tools to oppose their oppressors, which they wouldn't have been able to do if they had not learned to read. Without it, most of the world would be Babel, as we see in parts of Northern Nigeria where their equivalent of Jesus is kept in a language many can not read by those who's mantra is boko haram which means, no logos as in 'you all remain ignorant and stupid so that you can be the more easily exploited'!

It's sad to say, and many do not agree, but the state that Africa is currently in is due to us trailing other nations in the acquisition of the written word, or, Logos, shall I say. The rest of the world and parts of Africa had been making words for millennia before we were brought it in the form of Jesus books, and we have in no way caught up yet with not enough people reading the few books available to us. Thanks to the internet, this is changing, but we still lag far behind in our reading of words rate and the variety of those words and our understanding of those words, which shows up in our lack of ability to govern ourselves.
