PHIPEX:Don't be too sure. Nigerians have a tendency to go back to the status quo when things calm down. Ordinarily this should be a time to press home against the following: Incompetence in every area of government Corruption in every area of government Senseless salaries and expenses of NASS High cost of governance Poor remuneration, training, equipping, structure of the police. Etc |
fdigital:Good question. Till now, I am not sure I have clearly heard from ASUU what they have against IPPIS that makes sense. |
sinkhole:All this 'we will soon expose' shows you have nothing to expose and you are just grandstanding. If you really have something to expose, call for a national press conference, put out the issues and share documents evidencing those feeding fat on the IPPIS. |
Onyedika122:Very well said by Banky. What is most important and long lasting is a complete overhaul and massive reform of the Nigeria Police Force from top to bottom. A starting point would be the below: https://www.nairaland.com/5932356/upgrading-nigerias-police-force |
Samunosuke:Refineries are very downstream. |
adenigga:Which refinery do they own that they are forming association? |
nairanaira12:Buhari is nowhere near a fan of mine, but global economic depression and crash in crude prices caused by a pandemic has nothing to do with Buhari!! |
Babanah:First of all it will make a huge difference to lagos and apapa. |
LaEvilIMiss:From what you shared it isn't light rail. |
Seerade029:Which steel ![]() |
Champions League is getting a bit boring cos the same matchups come up year after year. Same thing in the world Cup. Nigeria has been to world Cup 6 times in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014 & 2018 and we faced Argentina in the group stages 4 or 5 times. |
maasoap:The economic principle of subsidy removal is sound. The issue of corruption with respect to the saved money is a TOTALLY SEPERATE MATTER, which as Nigerians we have to solve. Unfortunately it won't get solved because we are docile. Only George Floyd and a few other blacks were killed and America that has everything erupted!! Politicians RAPE us violently daily, yet we do nothing and continue to hail them, looking for our own corrupt deals from them. |
themanderon:Do you know that Nigeria income from oil in 1980 is far more than today? If nothing else the value of $1 of that era will buy you what $20 will get you today. No to then talk of population issues. |
Arrewa:Exactly. Non of the roads i see here are federal roads. |
rotile247:That is a separate issue and not the focus of this thread. |
urchcoded:Dey there. Anywhere in the developed world you pay money on inheritances, gifts, prize money etc |
Omooba77:Very valid point. Mass transit via rail is perhaps more of a priority for Lagos that 4th mainland bridge. We can't design Lagos around driving alone. How about completing the satellite to Marina rail? How about completing the Red rail line from marina to berger? How about completing the badagry expressway. Even a rail line from Marina past VI, Oniru and on to Dangote refinery would be brilliant. |
Tax is the reality of life. We have just avoided it for so long because we have had easy oil money for so long. Now that the easy oil money is fading, government is now serious about taxes. If they make me LIRS chairman walahi, I will find so many new taxes. People do catering from home for parties but don't pay any tax on the income. All I need to do is put a check on all the event centers first of all. They must ensure that all vendors using their facility has tax clearance certificate or go to jail. Shikena. Put the onus for compliance on the event center. A food vendor may be hard to track down, but he event center will always be there. |
oz4real83:My Brother!! All the runs girls on campus, you ever wonder what they do after they graduate? The enter pageants, Big Brother, Modelling or go into movies and basically continue their runs there. Some even enter banks, where they are deployed in the cut throat world of seeking deposits from wealthy men or CFO's of big companies, who of course want to hit that G spot before releasing N100mln for deposit. |
FarahAideed:Well that remains to be seen. Your fears are somewhat justified, but then again this tariff structure incentivizes the DISCOS to give you more power so that they can get more money from you. Hopefully that motivates them to increase public power supply. My estate gen bill has actually been reducing from N35k last year to as low as N20k now due to improved power. If power improves still it can reduce further to say N10k. |
In all honesty and based on 20years experience as an Accountant and Economist, deregulation is a bitter pill we have to swallow. A lot of people will say this is not the time due to the pandemic, but truth is that there is no good time as Nigeria is a poverty stricken nation and this will not change anytime soon. In fact it was better if we had deregulated 10 years ago, because with devaluation from $/165 to $/200 to $/360 and now to $/450, Nigerians have got poorer over time. Most major purchases in any household such as vehicle, fridge, freezer, computer, TV etc are imported and therefore e-rate dependent. Nigeria's revenue is dwindling like crazy. Our only source of any meaningful forex - crude oil- is becoming less valuable as solar and wind energy become viable alternatives to hydro, coal and gas fired plants. The final death of crude may come when electric cars become the norm globally, as 50% of crude oil is used by the transportation sector. This is death of petrol cars is expected to occur between 2030 -2040. https://www.forbes.com/sites/alanohnsman/2020/09/23/california-banning-sales-of-new-gasoline-cars-in-the-state-by-2035/#1066bfa77b87 Yet Nigeria is a nation of young people. About 60% of our 200m population are between 0 -25, so you can imagine how many cars will be on the roads in 10-15 years when these people start working. Will we subsides petrol for another 10mln incremental cars on our roads in 2030 with our limited funds, when we have no money for education for these people? Lack of education means they will likely remain in poverty. Poverty increases the chance of excessive childbirth and the destructive cycle goes on and on. That said, deregulation is not the only thing that will break the cycle. There is a lot for the government to do, but government can do NOTHING if it has no money to do it with. The NLC should make itself more relevant in issues at the Presidency and NASS level that affect the people such as wastage of funds, corruption in high places etc. NLC had nothing to say about NDDC saga? NLC has had nothing to say about wasting money for Hadjj? NLC had nothing to say about NASS spending billions every 4 years on cars? NLC has nothing to say on NASS budgeting N39bln to refurbish what is already one of the best buildings in Nigeria? That is where NLC can make itself useful and impact Nigerian if it really has Nigerian's at heart. |
I like Osinbajo as a person. I am convinced he has integrity and he has the kind of intellect we have so often lacked at the seat of the Presidency. But I am not convinced he is politically sound and diverse enough to manage the various issues and interests in this country. However having said that, perhaps that is exactly what we need. Someone who is not woven into the corrupt political fabric of Nigeria. |
Not quite sure what the attraction is here, but to each his own!! |
Davicjoe:UAE which is the the middle east that they follow so blindly has further reduced restrictions on alcohol. But as usual, we Nigerians that like to form religiosity will carry the Islam thing on our heads as though we were the ones that 'created' the religion. Not saying alcohol is good and we should all be drunkards. i for one don't drink alcohol, but it's just the way both Christians and Muslims carry religion and spirituality on our heads is what can be irritating. |
FarahAideed:So if the tarrif works and actuly saves you diesel, why would you complain about it. Most people commenting here have generator, even if it is as small as I pass my neighbour. The cost per kwh of electricity from my gen is about N160 per kwh and it still might not carry everything. If i substitute that for public power at N60 I am still saving money. |
edoairways:Exactly! There can never be a right time to increase these things. But yet we recognise that it has to be increased at some point. So the best thing is just to be brave and increase it once and for all. In fact the best time actually is now because FG revenues have been decimated. Its a bitter pill we eventually have to swallow. Why not now? What if there is another pandemic next year? What if oil falls to $10 permanently? |
Remi that was openly asking for employment slot in the senate Chambers last year. Is that the standard at which the Kingdom operates?? |
uruba23:They don't send money, yet na them steal am pass. |
addictiv:Bros, even me I'm tired. This is a line I thought we would never cross. If true, Emefiele had no clue what he's doing. That's why I've always said bankers would never be CBN governor. That position needs sound economists. |
I thought the new FIRS man has been blowing hot about how revenue performance was low under Fowler? Oya, the new guy should do his magic now. Crude prices crashed, coubtry was on lockdown, economic activity dwindled nationwide, yet they expect to make more revenue? These Treasury guys will not be ablebto do much. At best, they will just frustrate processes with more bureaucracy or at worst conive with those stealing money there to steal even more. |
IAmSkinny:A bit too brushed, but good pictures. |

, cos diversification has commenced since 2018. But not yet sufficient by 2023 - 2025 we would be seeing the results of these things.
