because the internal revenue agencies are incompetent and corrupt. You can't compare private sector consultant with public sector worker. Public sector workers that will go on strike because TV in their offices are removed. Like people at work are supposed to be watching tv.
bamdexfarms: My advise to you is very different from others. Being also a student in Germany since 2018, I have come to realize that no matter your resident status anywhere in the world, home is where the heart is. As a student, it is not mandatory to invest in Nigeria while studying but is is a very wise decision to take. Waiting until you get PR in Germany or Canada is like putting all your eggs in one basket. You can buy a plot of land in Nigeria and watch the value appreciate before you graduate!
Studying/working in Europe is not easy as many people assume. The system has been designed to take back a large chunk of your earnings (tax, health insurance/ bills etc) and you may be left with nothing to save. Also getting a PR does not guaranty that your income/savings will improve. Remember, after graduation, you will not be living in the subsidized student hostels anymore. There are lots of PR holders and citizens here that can barely get by with what they earn. Some can not go back home for a visit because they have nothing to show after staying for years in the Wets. If you invest early in Nigeria, your life will have a purpose here in the west. I know students who have real estate investments in Nigeria and they earn returns without breaking a sweat.
A wise investment in Nigeria may be your saving grace in case of emergency! Government policies in the West changes without notice and you need a solid backup at home! No investment is too early, only late investments are regrettable.
I wonder if those returns in USD terms make sense? Eg in 2015 I had a house rented at N2.5mln, but then dollar was $/N200 so equivalent of me rent was $12,500. Today rent is N4mln, but at $/470 it is now equivalent to $8,500!!!
Bought land in Lekki N5mln in 2012 when Naira was $/N165 equivalent of $30k. Sold the land in 2020 for N18mln when $/N470 so equivalent of $38k. Not as much gain as the Naira profit would suggest. Why am I benchmarking against USD?
Reality is that all my major expenses of the future will be determined by dollars - buying a car, children's education abroad, international travel etc. Meanwhile if I had invested the $30k in 2012 at 6% and compounded it, by now i'd have $48k.
Basalt: Goodmorning Ladies and Gentlemen. I am Basalt by name and I came to Germany last year(2019) October for my MSc studies with a little amount of Money and a partially borrowed block account from my inlaw (his money and my money). On arrival in Germany, I took only a few courses and got a job outside my city and also got a mini-job. I did all my monthly expenses from my Mini job and used my main job to completely pay back my debt within a few months of arrival.
Now, that's not the discussion at hand. I need advice especially from people who have lived abroad or have many years of experience in life. My visa still counts till 2022 and I can even extend it if I don't finish my studies by then. According to German policy, once you graduate from the University, you will be given 18 months to get a professional job or return back to your country. Returning back to Nigeria is totally out of my plan at least for now because I came from a very poor family without any job connection and I am really enjoying Europe. I plan to buy land or start building a house (I saved millions of naira and will even save more as time goes) but my friend who is also a student here discouraged me against that saying that my root is not yet fixed abroad that I should wait and continue investing in myself and undergoing professional training until I get permanent residency before investing. That I should always keep saving because it is not certain that I will get a professional job after graduation since my course is not in Information Technology which is currently booming in Germany. That even if I don't get a job, I can use the money to migrate to Canada or any other country of my choice. He asked What if you invest the money now and don't get a job after graduation, what will you do after the 18 months of post graduation visa since you don't have any backup from home who will help you out financially.
What do you guys think. I need opinions
Invest in German stocks or Treasury Bills until you are sure which location you will settle in. DO NOT invest in land/house in Nigeria unless it is inevitable that you are coming back. You lose nothing because even if it takes a year before it is 100% sure you are coming back, your $1 that is worth N470 today, may be worth N550 by then.
Generally any Nigerian that does not have foreign currency investments is DOOMED. I GUARANTEE you by 2030 $1 will be N1000!!
MyGeneration: Pension that is compulsory they steal d money and people have to cry and beg and protest and stay under the sun for their own pensions.
Insurance is compulsory in cars but hit somebody's car u are on your own, Nigerian insurance is just to fulfil all righteousness.
Now u want health insurance, ordinary the rudest human beings on earth are in government hospitals now ur money is with them and u have no choice u are setting urself up for full time frustration.
U would go to hospital amount u go use bribe them to attend to u would be almost d same amount u would have paid to normal government hospital, cause minister of health and his cronies would steal the entire health insurance fund and run to Niger republic then when they bring them back they faint in court
Can't the health insurance be for private hospitals?
obailala: For passenger transport, trains aren't cheaper than buses anywhere in the world. Would be interesting if anyone can kindly point out one single developed country in the world where trains are actually cheaper than buses for passenger service.
This particular misconception (that trains are cheaper) seems to be very very widespread amongst Nigerians and I keep wondering where the idea came from... Maybe the idea came from these Bangladeshi trains which the poor hang on to.
I tire o. I googled train cost vs bus cost in another thread using London to Manchester, Barcelona to Madrid and i think Berlin to Frankfurt and train was more expensive in ALL cases. Train carries more passengers but is equally far more expensive to operate and maintain. Typically for train you are paying for faster journey and more convenience. Agreed the train is still quite slow for now, but after some time the speed will increase. Also, because Lagos -Ibadan is relatively short, you wont appreciate the convivence.
If it had been Lagos - Abuja direct, at N10,000 at 4hours, compared to N5,000 by bus in 10hours (due to bad road) or flying at N80,000, you will definitely take the train.
How won't education standard fall when jamb cut off down south is 300, but up north its 120!
We have way too many people in university that have no business being there. Mostly up north ,but also down south. If you go to state universities in particular, you see alot of people that have obviously been admitted just to make extra money from fees.
michlins: A step in right direction. But why a special squad to do the duty of the police already. This is how to duplicate a particular duty and tomorrow claim salaries no dey and government can't spend on capital project.
We have icpc, police special fraud unit, efcc and now Buhari formed another arm just for corruption and still corruption is still here. Now ordinary to obey traffic laws we need a special unit and many special units
That unfortunately is the way we are in this country. Nobody does their job. Yet they want to be paid and don't want to be sacked.
adioolayi: Well...considering the terrible state Naira as a currency has found itself.....#67,000 is not too much...The only headache is where average Nigerian parent and guidian will get this kind of money
Not withstanding that things are hard, if education is considered important ,securing N67k over the course of 1 year is doable. Both by the parent and the student too. In the 50's our parent hacked, sold firewood etc and still schooled and made it.
Kzinne: cos they will be so stupid to buy a one way economy ticket for 3k. Rubbish
Valid point! Cos in truth how many people can afford even N2k return daily? That would be around N40k per month. The cost one is avoiding in lagos, is it even up to N40k per month? Might be useful if the family can be in ibadan with lower rent and cost of living and then oga comes Friday and goes Monday.
GeoAfrikana: Yet we're ungrateful for what Nigeria has done for us.
Federal universities cost not more than 50k. Yet we say this country has given us nothing.
Did you know that Americans borrow "student loans" to pay more than this covenant school fees just to attend university. Many of them never pay their loans back fully till death.
Yet we finish school, get government job and still refuse to resume early to work or attend to our fellow citizens unless they give us bribe.
It's not the country, it's the people.
That is very correct. The average American graduate finishes school with $50k to $80k in debt, which they pay back for upwards of 10 years. You would need to have a pretty good earning job and a lot of discipline to pay back in 5 years.
ednut1: is it public universities with lecturers using same notes since 2010 that are not glorified secondary schools smh. Go to LinkedIn and see where products of private uni are. The creators of paystack were private uni graduates. No be by private or public university. Both are kuku sub standard
No mind am. 70% of the new intakes by Shell in the last 5 years or so in their finance department have been from Covenant. And the rest mainly from private universities. So if you like be castigating them, but their products are obviously deemed better than public university products.
Aconomist: Nigerians don't think sha. They should be using the airline pricing model where first class tickets are used to subsidize the coach tickets. Rich people will pay any amount for comfort on the train... so charge them 10,000 naira so you can make the coach tickets 500 -- 1,000 naira.
Monkey people.
Why this doesn’t work is that the rich can easily put their Prado on the road for a short trip like Lagos to Ibadan. The distance is not really that long. On the other hand people typically fly because it’s along distance not easily covered by road.
DebbieBianca: Moment Anambra based prophet, Prophet chukwuemeka odumeje stormed Abia State Government House.
Prophet odumeje A.K.A Indabosky was welcome by Abia state Chief of Staff, Dr Anthony Agbazuere.
Odumeje sings one of his song as he was dancing, the chief of staff sprays him money. The chief of staff is spraying money while workers are being owed.
Chief of staff is spraying with our tax money. As usual Nigerians instead of venting will be hailing and praying the God to answer their call for their day when they would also be sprayed like this.
So let’s do a it of Economics 101. And let’s remove the fact that this train service is located in Nigeria or is owned by FG. Let’s just apply basic economics.
For a project that has just been completed for billions of dollars, the fixed cost and variable cost remain high. Therefore it is understandable that prices will be high in the interim for early adopters. As the rail line makes money and fixed costs are recovered, the marginal cost of operations will reduce as it will only be the operating expenditure that needs to be recovered. Besides the real economic value of a rail line is movement of freight, not passenger traffic.
This same thing applied to telecoms. As at the today the base stations are all in place and the license is fully recovered. All we are paying for now is cost of maintenance of the masts (diesel, electricity, security) and manpower costs. Which is why the real cost of telecoms has fallen sharply over the years. Consider that N1 per minute today is cheaper than N1per minute 3years ago if you consider devaluation and inflation.
Generalwoodz: Everything thing in this country is just up side down... Imagine train services that is cheapest means of Transportation anywhere in world!
Why is our case always different? Is there a hidden curse laying on this country that we don't have any knowledge of ? u
I mean I don't understand
When order countries are celebrating giant leap in science and technology, we are congratulating one pregnant governor for constructing an over head bridge.
When they're electing people with vision, we are here doing APC PDP
I never rode in a train while growing up Now that the trains are back they are increasing the fare!
This is not fair for the common man walahi
One thing I Know is that by increasing the Tfare the government is indirectly telling poor Nigerians to fucck off and stick to their ugly and evil roads.
Who exactly said train is cheaper.
London to Manchester by train £24 London to Manchester by bus £14
Business Meanwhile, keep your "GBOLA" hard without loss of sensation in the upper room 5k only for today Note: I deliver only within Lagos and Payment on delivery is allowed.
Give us confirmed before and after pictures of penis enlargement
I can see the ladies well represented on this thread. Making comments like "nice", "cute", "that's what a man should do".
But when you have threads that talk about serious issues in politics, the economy etc you will hardly find female commenters there.
Meanwhile how come they have 2 daughters already? Did Uchemba adopt? Or does his wife have 2 kids from before? Or has Williams got her pregnant twice before marrying.?
Why were your hands tied? You could have simply refused to stand as a surety for Maina and he would have been remanded in prison for the duration of his trial.
This rail line is utter madness as far as I'm concerned.
We do not even have a rail line from Ibadan to Abuja. neither Kaduna to Kano. So how exactly does the line from Kano to Niger make sense Even if it is supposed to be to facilitate trade to Niger Republic, are we saying that goods will transit from rail to trucks in Ibadan for the Abuja segment? Then move back to rail for Abuja Kaduna, then back to truck for Kaduna Kano, then on to rail again!!!!?
We are indeed cursed in the country!!! Only a miracle of biblical proportions can save this country from the sheer madness of its leaders. Buhari is actually the most ethnically and nepotistic motivated President we have ever had. As well as the most illiterate and incompetent!!!
Raydos: This is the Corporate Tower, It will be 40 storeys high, Just like the Amni tower too
I guess Eko Atlantic is gonna host some of the tallest buildings In Nigeria and probably Africa, Because, currently the tallest building in Nigeria is just 37 storeys!!
Nope, current tallest in Nigeria is old Nitel building on Marina and it certainly ain’t 37 stories. More like 25.
olujastro: Better say what you know. I know one of the biggest developers in Lekki, he's a Nigerian. Sijumoto, one of the most popular developers in Banana Island is a Nigerian too. So I don't know where you come up with your info from, simply because Chagoury is the one handling Eko Atlantic.
Banana Island in itself was created by Lebanese. Sujimoto is just buying land and developing properties there like any, other rich man can do. The concept and execution of Banana was by Lebanese. That’s what he’s trying to say. We Nigerians actually don’t have the discipline, vision and patience to create something like Banana. Asides night clubs, most of the nice businesses and fine dining restaurants in VI are owned by Lebanese. Mega Plaza, LG, Chocolate Royals, Crust and Cream, Park and Shop, Stallion Motors, Kia Motors, Cactus and many more. We find it difficult to run businesses for more than 3 to 5 years before it starts to fall apart, especially business that require brain power, coordination, planning and well timed execution. That’s we are only good at trading, buying and selling, import and selling. We don’t create anything.
Aconomist: Yea, I've been eagerly awaiting when Dangote builds his headquarters (he has the cash to build something truly spectacular). Total ENP is also planning a building called "La Definition" in Eko Atlantic to house its employees. Facebook is planning its HQ in Ikoyi I think, but it hasn't been announced yet. Folorunsho's Famfa oil is also building in Ikoyi.
Some of the indigenous oil companies such as Amni Oil have decided to go to Eko Atlantic instead of Marina. Here is the prototype of their tower. It is right next to Alpha 1. Construction expected to start in 2021.
How much does Amni Oil have that they want to build that?
