History tells us differently. Your idea proved impossible in wartime Germany. Countries with more depth in population and human creativity mixed with material resources even if marginal at the time of hostilities in industrial output eventually wins the day as they can quickly muster armament production on a large scale. i.e America vs Japan in the Second World War. The entrance of the Americans into WW11 completely tilted the war in the favor of the allies. Despite all the wonder weapons thrown into the fray by Germany the Red Army prevailed against the German Wehrmacht and the SS divisions of Hitlers Third Reich.

The Ranking from 1 - 4 should be;
Egypt
Algeria
Nigeria
South-Africa.

And even more accurately since military forces are instruments of state policy and power the rankings should 'rightly' be split into it's apparent geo-political sphere of influence:

Middle East & North Africa: 1. Israel 2. Egypt
Sub-Saharan Africa: 1. Nigeria 2. South Africa

The parameters used in making the listings by GFP is flawed. Adding defense industry as a matrix moves the club to an exclusive list which makes the presence of combat capable states without adequate defense industry irrelevant on the list. If defense industry is one measuring line to sprint on the ranking then all elements of national power indicated therein that can be called up or utilized in times of war should be criteria to move up on the rankings as most countries with advanced defense industries have no commensurate combat capable army on the ground to match their industrial output except perhaps on paper i.e Germany, South Africa etcetera.

About the 4 frigates and submarines to 100 patrol boats that's a misguided perception. Even fast attack crafts can be a nuisance to missile destroyers and sea mines are deterrence to submarines. In an emergency those 100 patrol boats can be quickly fitted with missiles translating maritime cost effectiveness to advantage at sea in a war.

So you see not all that glitters is gold especially when it comes to military hardware.

The Ethiopian military is only a matter of perception as they have proven themselves over the years in fighting however rag-tag they appear. Same perception goes for Chad.

The reality is different from what exists on paper here. GFP data used to arrive at these rankings in the case of Nigeria is incorrect and outdated, always is. Not to be taken seriously.

The A-29 Super Tucano from Sierra Nevada is not an Air Superiority Fighter. It is suitable for direct combat in a low threat environment (examples of which abound in this region). It is a multi-purpose hybrid mix of low-tech & high-tech warplane.

SEAD is made to be a high sounding word here! Well that depends on the threat environment. Africa is not Russia or China. SEAD is the means an armed force develops to suppress and destroy the air defence systems of an enemy state, gain and maintain control of the air space to allow own forces liberty to conduct military operations. Depending on the level of threat it can be done by a variety of means including the use of artillery, attack helicopters, drones, EW, SpecOps, light, heavy or stealthy attack/bomber aircraft (stealth though is often over-rated in my opinion) or Naval assets.

Again "For every threat environment different solutions".

We are not buying Super Tucano for SEAD. There is no contested airspace in Africa talk less West Africa. There are puny AA capabilities in West Africa and we are not going to send Super Tucanoes against them.
We want to find, hunt down and kill insurgents and criminals cheaply and accurately.

Our current threat obviously informs the purchase a job the A-29 can do excellently well at about $600 an hour loitering over the vicinity of interest for upwards of 4 hours with the capability to switch from ISR to Attack with precision compare that to a fast jet which could cost upwards of some 10 to 20 thousand dollars for CAS of 20mins wit less certain effectiveness.

However you and I know the weapons systems on our A-29 goes just beyond targeting militia bandits and rampaging terrorists with AK-47s and technicals. The world is unpredictable.

Last I checked this is a platform for African Militaries. Maybe you learn to comprehend my posts in that context and my choice of words.

We are not planning for war with Russia or China that have those kind of advanced and dense air defenses or military installations—such hardly exists in this region and where it does Nigeria has no geo-political ambitions.

Still in this region whilst the anticipated NAF A-29 Super Tucano' may be limited by speed compared to fast jets it's full compliment of weapons system gives it comparative advantage over what currently obtains and can be employed in SEAD from a stand-off position.

For different environments and threats are different solutions. There's always a combination of forces for effect.

Today hardly anyone risks flying over enemy airspace to be shot down but if NAF pilots could do that with Alpha Jets in foreign lands targeting key enemy installations and air defenses under fire then it can do much more with the incoming A-29 Super Tucanos.


Besides NAF' New Mi-35M are not cheap ok! And don't take too much of all you read online. A lot of it is the work of lobbyists. The reality is much much different. You can't dampen Nigeria's pride however you try whatever innuendos you use.

Good comparison. Super Tucano is not a jet. It is a slow turboprop aircraft but in terms of accurate munition delivery on to a ground target from stand off distances, it is better than more powerful aircraft

...a multi-role offensive asset that gives the Nigerian Air Force great capability to hit the enemy before they know what hit them...enemy air defences and strategic installations are some of the kill options.

As are the specifications of the Mi-28NE.

The mi-28 has an HMD identification and indication system slaved to the weapons systems
The Mi-35 does not

The mi-28 has the KRET package that allows the filming and transmission of footage via datalink

Looking at tomorrow, a purchase of the JF-17 today is an unacceptable waste of money. In fact i think we might be wishing and waiting for a JF-17 that will not come.

As at this time, we know that the Nigerian Air Force has budgeted for 3 units of JF-17 for the last 3 years. Yet no jet. We did not budget for the Tucano but we've paid in full. The Super Mushak that was budgeted at the same time as the JF-17 have all been delivered.

We should be looking at the JF-17 Block III, J-10B and C, MIG-29M/MIG-35 or the SU-30SM.
