Education › Re: World Top 500 University Ranking - 2008 by CyberG: 5:49am On Feb 27, 2009

Commenting on the ranking, Professor Isaac Adeyemi, Vice Chancellor, Bells University, Ota, said there was no Nigerian university on the top 500 list because the assessors did not have access to information about the Nigerian universities.

According to him, “Most of the information used in assessing universities were sourced on the website of these universities but many Nigerian universities do not have reliable websites. This is why the National Universities Commission is considering compelling Nigerian universities to have good websites. I am sure very soon, the poor ranking of Nigerian universities will become a thing of the past because nearly all the universities are trying to improve on the quality of their websites. “

The comment about schools being rated based on websites is very misleading or this man is just being mischievous! It doesn't matter how many websites that are built and how "good" they look, does the professor think we (or the ranking agencies) will be fooled?

Having schooled in Naija (Ife) and one of the top-rated schools in Canada, the difference in the quality of education is like day and night! I won't bother to make any exhaustive list but the difference in the facilities, research, equipment, funding and scholarship, mentoring is unbelievable! The only thing no one would ever argue is that Nigerians are really bright and in spite of the obvious lack of a lot of facilities back home, we still dey roll tight on this side!  cool cool (sometimes, he no dey easy though, lol) grin
Career › Re: What Next After A 3rd Class From University? by CyberG: 8:41am On Feb 22, 2009
I suggest before another person references Bill Gates or Wole Soyinka, you should do some basic research by just googling your ass of first!

In case you did not know, Gates did not drop out of school because he couldn't cope academically. Otherwise, how do you think he got admitted in the first place into Harvard, the currently #1 ranked school in the world and one of the consistently top ranked school of all time?

"Bill Gates claimed to have an SAT score of 1590 taken in 1973.

Gates stated that he scored 1590 on his SATs. He enrolled at Harvard College in the fall of 1973 intending to get a pre-law degree, but did not have a definite study plan and eventually left without his degree.

The older SAT (before 1995) had a very high ceiling. In any given year, only seven of the million test-takers scored above 1580. A score above 1580 was equivalent to the 99.9995 percentile"

So, Bill Gates could never, under any condition except if he really wanted to, be a third class graduate.

So, that said, it is time to come to terms with the realities of your environment and take proactive steps to develop yourself in other ways. If you are talented in something, look in that area and see how much you could develop and express that talent.

In my days at Ife, one of my class mates didn't do well academically and anytime he made comments, I always reminded him he was talented at talking and being a stand-up comic. This is one person that could make you laugh with almost anything he said or did - even when he did nothing! So look into your natural talents. Get some hands-on training in something you enjoy. Better still, look at picking up a vocation that people don't seem to wanna engage in but there's good business and money to be made out of it. I could give examples but you are naija yourself so you should know.

Finally, some people have advised doing a Masters which is a great idea. However, I wouldn't consider it a great investment of time and money, and depending on your other personal circumstances, to complete graduate school only to queue up looking for a bank job in Naija or hoping for jobs that are continually shrinking and getting shipped to Ghana and wherever. I am sure if you are real with yourself and make steady, perhaps slow, but certain progress at something you truly enjoy, you could create a first class life for yourself and end up employing all kinds of people.

@ caper143
nedureg01:
show respect and that's all u need. Nigerian men love ladies who are easygoing and humble.  it would also be a very nice idea to show more interest in things he likes maybe some afro stuffs(music, fabrics etc). on the courtesy issue, you said he opens the door for you and all that,  tell him to be real with you cos I doubt if he is being genuine in that aspect. but you will definitely have a great time with him and i say this because we Nigerian guys are the bomb!!
Caper143, I bolded that statement in nedureg01 posting. I can tell you that it is very possible that he genuinely does that contrary to what that posting may have insinuated. A true gentleman who knows how to treat a lady he cares about will definitely open the doors, pull your chair, and a lot more so it is very possible this is very genuine. This is from my personal experience and what I have seen here.

Now, that Nigerian men are not romantic, I believe everyone is different and I can tell you I know ladies who have a contrary opinion. So, my point, it depends on the person and you will definitely be able to form your opinion based on your experience with him.
Politics › Re: Yar'Adua:Nigerians will live up to 70years of age & earn minimum $4000 by 2020 by CyberG: 8:39am On Feb 20, 2009
Bollocks! YaraDULL is a FOOL if he actually read that LIE of a SPEECH after the paid speechwriter concorted that CRAP! C'mon, does anyone believe this idiot has a clue what is happening in Nigeria? While Nigeria is being deserted daily by Nigerians, this man who shouldn't even be a primary school class captain is promising heaven on earth by 2020 without giving ONE clue how he will get anything done??

Life expectancy of 70 years, GDP of $ 900 Billion, etc and some equally foolish spare tire read that cock and bull story to grown men or little kids who may really have no clue? This kind of lying by the man who is imposed as a non-president is just disgusting! I honestly cannot see YaraMONU being elected as a councillor in my city, never! Yet, this man who is totally clueless is talking about "vision"? This is so disgusting, lying to everyone and does anyone with half a brain believe this idiocy? Well, with this man's performance since he was rigged into a position that he knows nothing about clearly indicates he is not a brilliant man or his brains took flight a long time ago. Can this man even lead an ordinary study group in a real university? Definitely, not by any standards that progressive organizations choose leaders.

In order countries where people value their integrity more than any money or material wealth, no idiot will read that speech to anyone! Anyone who is present and hears this rubbish will definitely be ready to ask the really tough questions immediately in front of cameras. But not in Nigeria where GIGO is totally applicable to us - Garbage In Garbage Out! So, by 2020 when the productive backbone of the country would have relocated to Ghana, China, Cameroun or even Benin Republic, we will only get another Vision 2030? YaraDULL knows he doesn't know what he is doing or what to do! He is like a confused man running from pillar to post and Nigeria can never be better than the quality of the leadership it gets. This is one of the reasons why that country is still in the doldrums today. Yara should just quit and stop making a fool of himself and the whole country by making really STUPID speeches that have no substance!

Imagine if you "knew" that your life would not make any progress in a whole 4 years? With the horse trading that is already going on underground, maybe 8 years of not just "stand still" but retrogression. However, Nigerians are told to wait and in 2020, Nigeria will be a paradise??

Well, it is selfish to hold several lives and destinies down because one person feels he must be president for 4-8 years? Well, that is 4-8 years of the the country's life we will never get back. I think Yaradul should just step down and look after his health first and stop holding this country down with his "vision". Other countries are not waiting for us, yet we want to keep making progress backwards? Naija?? huh huh huh

No long story: the girl is not really into your friend. He should realize that now or find out later.

If he really likes this girl and can put up with the disappointment whenever it happens, he may choose to go with the "flow". However, I think he should leave his options open by getting a "backup" grin. However, if he doesn't want to waste his time, money and feelings (the most important of all), he should move on. I bet there are many other ladies who are still waiting, hoping and looking!

I appreciate all the meaningful contributions and time to do a write-up to my post.

Let me quickly indicate that there's nothing like bribery here, in the sense like giving a gift to achieve an objective. NO! I am sure that a lot of people will agree that if you really like someone, and something is within your means, you would buy it for the person. The person may ask or may not ask but on the merit of that situation, you can decide if it is a reasonable and good thing to do. However, when a girl begins to 'demand' things like it's her 'right' and makes a big deal out such things, it is 'manipulation'. Someone made a point here that she was acting and this was my personal conclusion when this issue unfolded.

Again, thanks for the contributions that addressed the issue.

@Stillwater

It's good you responded to my post and I appreciate that. This is nothing about turning to father Xmas and there's nothing wrong in giving even to someone who is not a GF or BF. However, the point is Naija girls, with very few exceptions, are just materialistic and gold-diggers! This is the point and a guy will give anything for someone they care about but girls seem to place emphasis on the gifts and money but not the heart that controls the giving and such acts. This is the point here and don't get it twisted. You can give without loving (this is useful for trapping gold-diggers) but you can't love without giving. Think about it.

@Tatase, I am not bitter in that sense but I spoke the truth I know and what I see happen, overtime, to girls but they never seem to understand this is the cause of it. A good, decent and balanced strong guy is hard to find and that is what girls complain about. However, things like this make guys to go from real men brought up by good parents in a respectful home to something girls end up crying about. Any wonder why girls may never get such a guy's sympathy or pity when she's used and abused??

As you read, understand this is not a thread bashing anyone. You have a right to be pissed off but also give some meaningful response if you could. I do realize everyone is different but this sentiment has been expressed by a lot of my friends, Nigerians and otherwise. So, here it goes:

====

I have read some of the comments of NL and I quite agree that something is biggerly so wrong with Nigerian girls. I had my first Nigerian girl here in Canada and what an immature bitch she is! Trust me, I am a very patient person and I so have my life together, young, well-educated and successful. I have no problems spending money for a girl but Nigerian girls (or maybe women generally) seem not to understand that a guy spends and will spend anything for a girl he LOVES and CARES about. Therefore, never place your attention NOT on the money and gifts but on the (his) heart which controls all the other things: time, gifts, loving, etc.

Well, she went from someone I liked to someone I really liked to the utter opposite! My first gift was expensive and before I bought it she found out the cost, she said, wow, this is so expensive. Fast forward a few months later, I was going to take her to my company's annual christmas dinner. I could go alone or go with another girl but I thought, well she should be the one. She was girlfriend.

She told me she wanted $120 to make her hair and how surprised I was when she said: why have a girlfriend if you can't afford to pay for her hair?? That is the most idiotic, ignorant, naija-mentality statement I have heard recently. I was patient with her because she has just moved here and doesn't know this is not Nigeria. I had bought her more gifts, spent time with her and lots more. She suggested splitting it 50-50 and I thought that was fine. Then, she claims I was the one who said so. In short, the drama that followed in the next few weeks was so irritating and childish. She was immature and just a bitch! Stay away from Naija girls abroad - with the exception of the unusually well brought-up few who have not lost their brains and decent family values.

But I know what will happen to her and others like her: They will be f.ucked and dumped by every guy of every color until they are in their 30s and 40s and desperate for marriage. And even after the marriage, the guy will still get a divorce somehow and leave their sorry ass. After all, they always claim to be single by choice and loving it! May they rot away in the boredom and colorlessness of singleness. Low-life, classless bitches. Interestingly, we will always meet again and then, they are so ashamed to face the guy who now has no regard or interest them. Losers!

So guys, don't be so considerate and find you only wasted your precious time. F.uck her and f.uck her until you are tired and then pass her to all your friends and someday she will realize it is because of the typical Naija girl attitude that has given her such bountiful results. Let no naija girl abroad complain about no-husband, scarcity of men, etc - it is all your fault so suck it up!

Well, fast forward a short-period of time, I met another lady from the carribeans and her complimentary on Naija girls was really ugly and not so different from the terrible image these girls have created for their families and a whole country. (Yes, she said something about Naija guys too but she added a compliment - something she admired). Anyways, if a girl will be a loser, it doesn't matter who she meets! Ori ti o je iya, bi won da lekun, ko ni gbo! (A destined suffer-head is irredeemable, no matter what you do to help, she must still suffer!)

Politics › Re: Lagos: Opulence In The Midst Of Poverty (NYTimes) by CyberG: 11:48pm On Dec 09, 2008
I hope Nigerians are not in denial? Well, maybe some but this Nigerian is NOT in denial. The story SPOT ON and don't tell me something about Nigerians who live abroad but pretend to know more than people there! I visited Nigeria this very year - Lagos, Abuja, Ife, Ibadan, Imo State. Lagos has not changed significantly but measured against time, it seems to have retrogressed much more. How can it be that the roads that have been repaired / created in my city of about 1 Million people is far much more than all the roads that were repaired / made within Lagos of about 15 Million?

I actually did go out to see parts of Lagos (on foot) not inside some big car or some place where the rich men hold sway and what a shame of a place! You see people dressed in suit and ties going to work on a rainy day (yes, I was there during the rainy season) and I couldn't pity them more! Drains were completely overflooded, the roads was swamped, everyone was wet in their suit, ties and dresses and I imagined that same situation here -- I dare say very impossicant!

With a road that could never pass for a by-road (not even a range road) in any decent society, I saw everyone (okada, bus, taxi, peopple) hustling and hugging this road - man must survive! Don't "our leaders" see the roads? Don't day-to-day users see the road? I guess we all do but we are so used to it and now that a foreigner makes honest assessment (doing his job), someone is ranting and raving about NY, Queens, etc.

The joke is on you and us! What a shame! What a backward society that refuses to move forward with all the oil money, abundant natural and human resources that other countries may only dream of but could never have! I know Nigerians are well traveled and we can see the clear difference in our host nations (of course they are not perfect too) but it is clear Nigeria is hopelessly far behind. In fact, given the current political-economic-infrastructure disaster Nigeria is, without any improvement, it will be the perfect example of a country gone to hell in a trailer basket!

15.   Will Settle Down Because having a family is a happy thing after you have done those things, and somewhere between satiation and saturation you have achieved the occasional state of grace, then you are ready to call it quits. Enough is enough. You've been single long enough. It's time to settle down. So find some good man and just do it.

I have a friend who is 29, soon to be 30. Professional, well-educated career lady but guess what she's freaking out 'cos the "right" guy is not in sight. Her case is similar to your friend's but she admits she thinks about it a lot. If your friend is African (or shares our values) she will have concerns no matter how much money she makes or how successful her career is.

I think it is important to not be in denial and think that at 27, she still has a lot of time. Even though mathematically she does, marriage / relationships does not answer to such calculations, so she should make it a priority if she doesn't want to be in a situation where she has to eventually "settle". If she is overly-picky, then it might be part of the problem. For example, I know a lady who once told me she wants a Jewish medical doctor and she is African. That is really restrictive and meeting such a man is one thing, but the man must also be interested in marriage and kids, like she ultimately wants. I think at that age, a lady should know herself enough, know what she wants and have realistic expectations. Without realistic expectations, a lady may keep waiting forever and all the decent guys may be all gone.
