Hidentity: I think that I have observed this for quite a while and I think that it need be said.
I expressed my concern on why Nigerian youths remain leaders of tomorrow even tomorrow to someone a few years back, and he suggested that I become a member of a few social media outfits. I did- Nairaland is one. He didn't say more, but I have seen more.
E-friends, it is easier to trap the water in an ocean in a glass cup than it is to see one reasonable comment on a page on Nairaland. Is it that hard to just ignore a topic if one has nothing intellectually benefiting or wise to say than insult the feelings of a tribe, religion or sex?
Look at it from here, a lot of unemployed youths are here lamenting and the story continues year in and out. If you were an employer, are you likely to take someone on a forum like this serious to conduct the affairs of your business or firm? These things matter, but it seems we either don't know or we just deny that we don't. There are people of incredible and distinguished personalities here, but with these comments fanning the embers of ethnic war, can youths like us be left with sensitive issues like nation building?
We can't lament that we are being sidelined when we lack the diplomatic tact and mental credential to make a simple remarkable comment. Insult me for this, I don't care- people take to insult when they are short of logic. But it is saddening that these e-children of ethnic war are thought to mirror the rest of us who are not in the bandwagon of victims of social, moral and intellectual decadence.
I expected that Seun or the mods would fashion out a way to halt this madness. The truth is that not paying attention to little details has lead to several wars and disasters. If this trend of singling out an ethnic group as criminals, rapists or ritualists subsists, we all may not be able to tell the story of the consequences. We can choose our actions, but we cannot choose the consequences, why don't you just keep quiet or type something worthwhile?
I am a proud Yoruba and a Christain, but I know that in my formation process, I became human first before becoming a Yoruba or a Christian and as long as the next person is human, I should be fair to him. Why can't we just live and let live? The leaders of tomorrow are just more terrible than the ones of today.
If an Igbo person is caught for doing drugs, it is not because he is Igbo- it is because of the inherent criminal nature in every human which he didn't curb. If one Hausa man is caught for terrorism, it is not because Hausa people are terrorists, it is because of the inhumane part of every human he did not restrict. If a Yoruba man is caught for raping, it does not make Yoruba people rapists, it is because that particular Yoruba man failed to control the animal instinct in him. Committing crime is never an identity of any tribe or ethnic group because speaking English does not make one a Briton.
The future awaits us- we cannot succeed in giving it the best with the way we reason, comment and react here.
Thanks May the heavens bless you. Personally, I am worried about the future of Nigeria, or even Biafra, Oodua or Arewa in the hands of this young generation. They just don't seem to have what it takes to lead, save for a few. May God help us. |

Even worse, for such a personality, he was buried abroad in A CEMETERY, with pallbearers in cap and suit, and few members of his family, even with all the public announcement of his obituary and enough time given for people to attend, This man was buried like a nonentity. Even my friends fathers funeral had more substance, and the man was just a furniture maker!

And how do you know there were no "notably" people there? Or can you identify everyone seated in that church? What? You expect to see Obama there? You forget that he is not of this generation. Danycrusoe: If The Local Players Dont Take These Little Chances That They Get With Both Hands And Up Their Game, The Present Nff Board Is Ready To Neglect Them In Search For Inexistent Ready Made Players From Abroad. *MODIFIED* I Dont Know Why It Is Difficult For Nff To Develop A Useful And Effective GrassRoot Program That Will Unveil Talents Every Now And Then. Something Like Supporting The Principal Cup That Is Being Held In Several States Of The Federation Not Forgetting The NNPC Shell Cup as well, these are competitions that are laden with talents, rather than waste in funds on the clearance of players who will not add value to the national team (e.g shola ameobi) While I agree with you that we need to focus more on these developmental competitions, I think the problem goes beyond unveiling talents. We also need to pay attention to developing technical attributes in these talents. Yes, Nigeria is laden with talent, but most of it is usually physical and a lot of flair. Technique is usually lacking. You don't learn that playing monkey post or under the bridge. That is why we keep complaining about free kicks, corners and composure in front of goal. Nobody seems to teach that in our schools or mushroom academies. I cannot think of any Nigerian player at present who is the designated free kick or corner kick taker for his club. We need specialised coaching for these technical attributes. Our local clubs also need to have feeder teams were players in the different localities can be groomed in a club setting from as young as 9-10 years old. That way they can also understudy those playing professionally. Lastly, we need to work on the mentality of these talents. They must understand that making money isn't everything. I can't count the number of talents that have gone abroad and sinking into mediocrity as long as they are making enough to send money home and form big boy. They need to work hard at being the best and playing alongside the best. Besides, you'll earn even more that way. |

OP, I feel your pain. I have also posted a few job openings here too, and sat on recruitment panels a number of times. What one comes across is disheartening. As far as Nairaland goes, it's not really surprising. You only need to read some of the brainless, unintelligent and downright absurd comments some people make here to know that we have a real problem on our hands in this country. There is a dearth of rational thinking, and I often wonder if comprehension is still being taught in our schools. It really is a sorry situation. |

I think people need to understand that a city being old and rustic doesn't mean it is backwards. I have been to a few places in Europe that are very old and have been well preserved. I'm talking places with buildings constructed in the 1800's and early 1900's with narrow cobblestoned streets that can only take one car at a time. Much hasn't changed from what one can see. They have only been well maintained, and the citizens take pride in the heritage of their cities or towns. They've been able to marry old with new in the same city.
What Ibadan needs isn't a change of it brown, rustic roofs, but more cleanliness general around the city. This is not peculiar to Ibadan alone but most cities and towns in Nigeria. Cleaner roads, a more organised flow of human and vehicular traffic, proper transportation. That is what Ibadan needs and it can even become a tourist destination because it has many important landmarks and a rich history.
As for those talking about poverty, I don't know what they are talking about. Poverty is everywhere in Nigeria. From Lagos to Kano, Aba, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Owerri, Maiduguri, Warri, everywhere. I don't know where we get this idea that poverty is only peculiar to one tribe. Seriously? Don't we follow the statistics? Can't we see it all around us? Come on. |
Politics › Re: Buhari’s Appointments Are Not Lopsided Says Jonathan’s Former-aide, Omokiri by dabossman(m): 2:37pm On Sep 08, 2015 |
And this is what I've been telling some folks. Growing up, I saw many Nigerians, especially those from the southern part complaining about Federal Character and Quota System; but today our youths are championing that cause simply to see some politician from their village get a "juicy" appointment. Have we stopped to think what will happen if we now help to entrench this same Federal Character our parents kicked against? Do we southerns realize that if quota system/federal character takes precedent over merit we will always get the short end of the stick?
We have 19 Northern states and 17 Southern states. That is 53% to 47%. Every population census from time also apportions more people to the North than South. Now imagine if this is applied religiously to everything that concerns us at Federal level since our youths are clamouring for Federal character. That means
- In every squad of 23 footballers for the national team you will have 13 North and 10 South. Skill or talent will not matter. - If there are 100 national scholarships available to students, it will be 53 North, 47 South. It won't matter if there are 1000 brilliant students from the South more qualified than most of the 53 from the North, or vice versa. Merit will not matter. - Same goes for jobs, appointments etc.
Should we as Nigerians, especially the youths be clamouring for this kind of system? I think not. If we must kick against some of PMB's appointments, maybe we should find some other reasons to give. But clamouring for Federal Character/Quota System is a dangerous trend that will bring us no good. I agree with Reno. Let us fight to abolish Federal Character across board, not champion it. |

But they voted for the party at the centre/Jonathan in 2011 This is the first time that core SW states are being mostly ruled by same party as the one at the centre (Ekiti and Ondo are still under PDP) Hhm, this is the difference between those who know history and those who choose to distort it. |

It's not too much for both coach and NFF to say sorry we didn't know. He did what he should do in getting across, though I believe he could have called afterwards to explain fully.
