Tcwork:Tcwork, I apologize if I came off rude. |
Tcwork:Thank you! Now let’s use John 3:16 as a case study. John 3:16 KJV “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” It is well known that Jesus came to the earth to give his life as a ransom in exchange for ours so that we might gain everlasting life. Compare Matthew 20:28/1Timothy 2:6 But what is the “ransom” and why did he have to give his life in the first place? The basic understanding of the word “ransom” means a price paid for the release of one held in slavery/bondage. How did we get into slavery? And to what? We’ll do well to consider what transpired in the garden of Eden about six millennia ago. Jehovah created Adam, he was made perfect, given him a home, satisfying work, a spouse, nutritious food but he was given something even more precious—the prospect of living forever—on earth. Genesis 2:17 But this precious gift was to be gotten only through adherence to God’s simple command. As we all know, Adam&Eve sinned, lost the opportunity of living forever here on earth. They and their unborn children were thereby tainted by sin and condemned/made slaves to death. Genesis 3:19, Psalm 51:5, Romans 5:12 This brings us back to John 3:16. Jehovah had to send his perfect Son[Hebrews 7:26] to die in our behalf in order that we might regain that long lost promise of endless life that was promised to Adam. compare 1Corinthians 15:22 Since we are all imperfect[tainted] humans, no matter how much effort is put, we cannot erase inherited sin and death from themselves. Psalm 49:7-9 Several alchemists during the Dark Ages even tried to extend their lives, all to no avail. This comes as no surprise, after all we were all made with the desire to live forever. Ecclesiastes 3:11 That’s why Jehovah did not leave humans to their fate, otherwise we are all dead men walking. So in order, not to die anymore, one must take in knowledge of Jehovah, exercise faith in and obey Jesus Christ. John 6:40, 17:3 Anyone who refuses to obey Jesus Christ is already condemned to death. John 3:36 P.S. Everlasting life is not to be confused with immortality, since that’s a different ball game. |
Tcwork:Ahh, I thought you said those faithful men and women already have “eternal life”? You’re speaking from two sides of your mouth now? I will requote my earlier comment for you to see again. DappaD:Just admit that you’ve already been cornered with no way out and go to bed. |
Emusan:Your salvation depends on you acknowledging those “8 old men”. Matthew 25:34-40 You go dey there think say na play. Okay. You’re just making spurious claims with no scriptural basis and you want someone to validate them for you? Miss me with that. Simple question—who was Jesus referring to at Revelation 3:12 as “My God”? |
Tcwork:You keep mulling over insignificant details. Can I ask the reason why? It seems I need to be more succinct with my replies to you. |
Tcwork:Before it was “the scriptures I quoted do not support my points” now it has come to you misconstruing a simple and direct statement made by Paul at Hebrews 11:39-40 You’ve been saying that the faithful men and women of old have already gained everlasting life, can you please provide the scripture? Because as we know, even David was given a promise that his offspring[Messiah] would rule in a Kingdom that God would set up[2Samuel 7:12-13] and David put faith in those words yet he never saw the fulfillment of it in that he never got to be part of the arrangement. Acts 2:29-34 That’s the import of Hebrews 11:39-40. |
Tcwork:Be careful not to allow pride becloud your reasoning. Matthew 6:2 |
Tcwork:Hebrews 11:39,40 NWT “And yet all of these, although they received a favorable witness because of their faith, did not obtain the fulfillment of the promise because God had foreseen something better for us, so that they might not be made perfect apart from us” I know this scripture will be giving you severe headache by now but this is strong proof that not one of the faithful men and women before Jesus Christ are yet qualified for everlasting life. Paul refers to all of them as the “great cloud of witnesses” meaning they are also of great value to Jehovah but are not qualified to receive the gift of everlasting life yet. Hebrews 12:1 Just take your time to digest it slowly so you don’t run into further problems. |
LebenNG:Let me be the one to tell you that you made absolutely zero sense with this comment you made. |
Tcwork:All this one just to dodge the discussion abi. You won’t just admit that there’s nothing else you have to say on the matter. Indeed, the wisdom—which God gives[James 1:5]—is vindicated[proved righteous] by works/actions. Matthew 11:19 |
Janosky:Emusan’s conscience has been thoroughly beaten. It’s usually he and his bandwagon of trinitarians who claim that Jesus split into two from his Father and sent one part of himself to the earth[basis not found in the scriptures] But how come Revelation 1:1 & 3:12,21 is now saying something different? So after ascension, why did Jesus did not merge back into his Father? Why was he still was calling somebody “My God, My God” @Rev 3:12 if he himself is God biko? ![]() |
Tcwork: Tcwork:There’s actually no need for much deliberation. Paul has already summarised everything about this discussion in Hebrews 11:39. Moreover, those going to heaven to rule along Jesus are partakers of the new covenant. Luke 22:28-30, Hebrews 8:8-12 And if I can remember clearly, Moses, Samuel, David, Solomon etc were all under the old covenant when they died. Exodus 19:5 So what’s the essence of God establishing a new covenant that is completely different from the former if those under the old one will still benefit from the new one? Jeremiah 31:31-34 All you need to do is understand what “everlasting life” is, so that you’ll stop mistaking it for life in heaven. |
Tcwork:Even the Jews who listened to Jesus liked his manner of teaching and they were even astounded by the wisdom portrayed in his words. Matthew 7:28-29, John 7:46 But how many of them were willing to follow the Messiah even if it meant facing opposition from family and society? Matthew 16:24 John 12:42-43 says that those men though, they knew Jesus was the Messiah refused to acknowledge him publicly because of fear of the oppressive religious leaders in their day. So if you want to REALLY follow Jesus Christ, you must be willing to break free from false religious ideologies and teachings. Revelation 18:4 |
Tcwork:I’m very very very, very busy today but I’ll give you a suitable reply nonetheless. Yes, all those ancient Hebrew prophets all had a thing or two to say about the Messiah. See Deuteronomy 18:15, Psalm 2:6, Isaiah 42:1, 53:8-12, Jeremiah 23:5, Daniel 9:26, Ezekiel 21:26-27, Micah 5:2, Zechariah 9:9 etc BUT none of them saw the fulfillment of those prophecies. Hebrews 11:39 So how could they have exercised faith and obeyed someone that had not come at the appointed time? Galatians 4:4-5 I intentionally used John 3:16 because it is a popular scripture used by your churches. Most of you people think “everlasting life” means going to heaven but fail to realize that Adam had the same prospect if he had remained obedient. Genesis 2:17 No one ever said those prophets are lost and forgotten, Jehovah will surely remember and resurrect them to perfect human lives here on earth. John 5:28-29, Acts 24:15 Next you try to connect Matthew 26:52 and John 18:36 but still the scripture do not share your view. Again I wouldn't spoonfeed you. Go and read again. So let me ask you now. During the WWII, when the Axis and Allies powers were pitted against each other. Didn’t we see German Catholics kill Italian Catholics, German Protestants kill Italian Protestants and so on? Which Lord approved of those churches going to war to slaughter their members please? Moses and Elijah were long dead. Psalm 146:4, Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 They were represented in the vision but only Jesus Christ was literally present. Most people like you don’t know the real meaning of 2Kings 2:11. You assume that Elijah went to the “heavens” when there are actually different types of heavens such as the sky. See Genesis 1:8 Elijah couldn’t have gone to the spiritual heavens for the following reasons in John 3:13, 1Corinthians 15:36 & 1Corinthians 15:50 but that’s by the way. If the latter part of Luke 16 is to be taken literal then you’ll have no problem explaining these? DappaD: |
Tcwork:All those aforementioned, though servants of Jehovah according to the understanding they had then, do not qualify for everlasting life yet that’s why Peter said David was still in the dust of the earth! Acts 2:29,34 So how many of them saw Jesus Christ and exercised faith in him? John 3:16 Those faithful men will be resurrected here on earth since they DO NOT qualify for everlasting life yet. Acts 24:15 Try and connect Matthew 26:52 and John 18:36 you’ll see the point I’m driving at. I do not need to spoonfeed you. Your bible did not teach you that Elijah and Moses visited Christ and Peter witnessed. My own Bible said that what Peter, James and John saw was a vision. Matthew 17:9 Even in a parable the good lazarus was in Abrahams bossom .So where is Abraham’s bosom please? You called it a parable yet you want to interpret it literally. If you want to miscontrue the latter portion of Luke 16 you’ll run into a number of problems because for one, what wrong acts did the rich man clothed in purple do to suffer torment and what good acts did Lazarus do to go to Abraham’s bosom? So if these holy prophets according to you, would not gain eternity, who would, you? You’ll not find a single verse in the Old Testament—Not ONE—where Jehovah ever promises anyone going to heaven. Whenever his faithful servants were about to die, God usually said: “You will be gathered to your people” that is, they are to return to the dust not heaven. Compare Isaiah 26:19 Jesus asked his disciples to BUY those swords so that he would teach them a lesson on meekness. Read Luke 22:36-38 carefully. Please stop twisting the scriptures to fit your own thinking it won’t augur well with you. 2Peter 3:16 |
Tcwork:None of those persons you mentioned above—whether Abraham, Joshua or David[active men of war] are qualified for everlasting life yet since the Law is meant to lead to the Messiah who will rescue people from sin and death. Galatians 3:13,24, Romans 8:21 That’s why we must listen to Jesus Christ if we want to gain everlasting life. John 3:36 So stop becoming wise in your own eyes sir it won’t do you any good. Romans 12:16 Have you forgotten that Peter is a very controversial character? Ordinarily when Jesus and his disciples go on their preaching tours they only carry a staff for support and not even swords for any reason whatsoever. Mark 6:7-9 But on this occasion, Jesus asked his disciples to buy swords, not for defensive purposes but to teach his disciples[especially Peter] a good lesson that would be imprinted in their hearts and minds. Luke 22:36-38 Jesus knew that Peter acted on every impulse and was presumptuous in his conduct so when he struck the ear of the slave Malchus, Jesus used that avenue to further buttress the point to his disciples that they must never resolve conflicts in that manner and they must remain neutral concerning political and social matters of the world since God’s Kingdom is not of an earthly source. John 17:14-16,18:36 |
Kingfragz:I know. It’s the dangers of SM that is usually stressed on. On a faceless media like nairaland, we cannot really ascertain the spiritual standing of all who might claim to be JWs online since there are a number of apostates on this forum too so that’s why we’re to use discretion. You can shoot me an email let’s relate a bit. |
Kingfragz:Okay if that’s the case, then you’re aware of the warnings that the “faithful” slave has issued on the use of social media and its dangers so I don’t need to tell you again. Psalm 26:4 It’s nice to meet you, Kingfragz. |
Kingfragz:Excuse me? |
Kingfragz:Are you one of Jehovah’s Witnesses already or are you looking forward to studying with one? |
OP please what are your thoughts on Revelation 3:21? |
haddeylium:Jesus’ words at Matthew 5:22 & Luke 6:27-30 mean nothing to him so let him continue his rants. |
Tcwork:It can be very easy to quote Romans 13:1 when you would like to justify anything that has to do with the government. Jehovah demands we give complete devotion/allegiance to him alone. Exodus 34:14, Colossians 3:23 What happens when you try to divide it between God and something else? Would God be pleased? 1Corinthians 10:20-22 That’s why Jesus struck a balance between obeying God and obeying the human authorities. Matthew 22:21 For Jehovah’s sake, we should be submissive to every form of authority and governments[1Peter 2:13, Titus 3:1] but not when their rules run contrary to God’s will and commands. For instance, in Jerusalem, a decree was passed by the authorities that the Christians should cease their preaching and teaching activity, but what was the response of those Christians to the authorities despite being submissive to them? Read Acts 5:28-29 Who should they obey now, their Lord & Master Jesus[Matthew 24:14, 28:19-20; Acts 1:8] or the authorities? |
coperatee01:I found this article to be very helpful in these kind of circumstances. https://www.jw.org/en/library/magazines/g201310/what-is-depression/ |
Preciousgirl:The same Jews who all rejected Jesus Christ? Mark 6:4 |
IamAtikulate:There’s no proof up there, all I see are JJST desperate attempts at misconstruing Jesus’ words. Please please please leave Luke 16 out of this. It has nothing to do with this so-called “hellfire”. So somebody will actually take his eyes, tongue, feet and hands to this “hellfire”? Mark 9:48 you quoted finds its parallel at Isaiah 66:24, right? Ans Isaiah 66:24 said it was “corpses” or “carcasses” that are being thrown into Gehenna[a place in former Jerusalem where rubbish and condemned criminals were incinerated]. So it is not even living humans but corpses. I hope you can see that? |
IamAtikulate:The Hebrew word translated soul is nephesh which literally means a “breathing creature” which is the person himself not something that is inside a person. Genesis 2:7 Humans and animals ARE souls, they don’t possess one. Numbers 31:28, Ecclesiastes 3:19-21 Rather than delve into much detail, why not consider the parallel rendering at Luke 12:4? That’ll help you get a clearer understanding. The Bible didn't use grave but hell. Grave and hell are not the same thing.Okay, but the same “hell” that was thrown into a lake of fire? Revelation 20:14 C’mon you can’t tell me you missed that important detail. From that verse, you could see that the soul is immortal at death. Human and death can harm the body but not the soul. Only God can perish the soul. You’ll never find the words “immortal soul” anywhere in the Bible. According to the Bible, the only two persons who are immortal: God[Jeremiah 10:10, Habakkuk 1:12] and his Son, Jesus after he was resurrected from the dead.[Romans 6:9-10, 1Timothy 6:15] None other in the Bible are described as being immortal, not even the angels that’s why Matthew 25:41 speaks of the rebellious angels attaining destruction. 3. The soul doesn't reside in the grave. The body prerishes in grave and it is conscious of nothing.Go and tell Psalm 88:3 and Ecclesiastes 3:20 that one. Like as already been said, “hell” translated of your Bible actually means “Grave” in English. That’s why Job was telling God to conceal him there. Job 14:13 The KJV translators only saw it fit to change the rendering to “hell” in the NT, to fit their own doctrines because even Jesus went there and stayed there for 3½days. Acts 2:27 |
needanswer:Exactly. What you’ve just admitted is the truth and is in line with Ephesians 4:22-24 and Colossians 3:9-10 You know—according to Jesus Christ—the truth about Jehovah, the ransom, God’s Kingdom are like a treasure and a precious pearl, like he mentioned in one of his parables. Matthew 13:44-46 If we do value what this ‘pearl’ that is—the undiluted truth—then the necessary steps will follow i.e. stripping off the old personality and practices of the world and embracing a new personality that befits one who’s professing godly devotion. So be resolved to acquire this precious truth about Jehovah and never let it go for any reason at all. Proverbs 23:23 |
needanswer:Yes we are trained as Jehovah’s Witnesses to apply tact and gentility when preaching and teaching others. 2Timothy 2:24 And like you stated from the onset, their fine conduct played a vital role in drawing you to the truth. Matthew 5:13-16, 1Peter 2:12 Also, like other humans, we stumble and make mistakes(James 3:2)but what’s most important is how we recover, which shows humility on our part too. James 4:6 |
needanswer:The bolded caught my attention. Continue taking in accurate knowledge of the true God Jehovah, dear sir/ma. John 17:3 In time you’ll come to see the many benefits as you make the truth your own. John 8:32, Romans 12:2 |
Janosky:Let him allow his brethren to also express their own opinions and thoughts on the matter. After all their Holy Ghost which they say is a person is speaking through all of them. Abi no be so again? ![]() |
Marshal9:An interesting thought is shared at Ecclesiastes 5:3 that may be of concern to you. Like in your own case, someone who might dwell much on entertainment that stirs up one’s imagination and curiousity would begin to replay such cognitive pictures while asleep. But of course such dreams are completely natural and bear no real significance if the person in question has nothing to do with spiritistic practices. Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Zechariah 10:2 |
