Kobojunkie:
I don't think we can underestimate the power of a useful database in the fight against terrorism. Only I will not rush to conclude that this one will, considering this is about the umpteenth time this same federal government has announced yet another database scheme. A database is only as effective as the data it contains and creating a new database, from scratch every other year leaves one to question the sanity of those who keep coming up with these ideas.

I think you can definitely have a database of cars-- maybe some inventory of cars that have entered the country, etc. But I also believe we do/should have a database of majority of the humans in Nigeria to work with as well(INEC's list which ought to be a national list.
I would debate this one!
Yes we can never under estimate the usefulness of a good database but the problem with this one is, a good database for the wrong purpose. It is alright to have a database of  cars that we have in the country, it's done every where but they do not use it to fight terrorism but for things like checking who needs to be taxed, know the amount of private cars that run on the roads etc.

What we really need like you have pointed out is a human database, that way you can monitor people closely. from such database you can tell if one is living above his means, you investigate further and find out what the source of his money is, etc.

Like i stated earlier a vehicle database cannot be accurate because most people do not even drive cars that belong to them or they bought themselves.

What part are you debating the smartness!!!! grin grin grin grin

You do not know what a CRB means and you have guts to open mouth and call me ignorant. Like I said get up from your sitting room in Naija and do some travelling then maybe you will get a better idea of how things work.

manny4life:
No argument it would be a powerful tool, the question is to what extent? In my own argument, I've always believed it will cause more harm than good for the purpose for which it was established. Besides, while protection of the nation falls under federal jurisdiction, both domestic and international, the burden of gathering information, disseminating those information should be treated on the state level. This should work as you getting a secret or top secret clearance; the federal govt has a central collecting database on "as needed basis". The citizens of the states will decide what shoes to wear and NOT a one size fit all federal mandate.

On that note, you cannot fight terrorism like that, I beg to differ on that. Domestic terrorism should be rather treated on state by state. States have more resources and tools, know their surrounding, etc to curtail or deter terrorism. Scanning license to plate tags does not cut it, why I say that is because any smart person (terrorist) will always find their way around. There was this training I went for in downtown DC last Wednesday, this boring a/s/s meeting lasted for three hours, but just to give you a scope, the instructor clearly stated the opposite of what your saying. When identifying terrorism, you have to know their different groups and subgroups, it's not the visible items that matter although important, it's the intent. How to identify an intent. For instance, someone can carry legit papers, everything, but when they go to fours different store and urchase fertilizers with everything being legit, is that a red flag?
Now this is the kind of thinking i am talking about. Anybody could buy a car and hand it over to someone else as a gift and then same car gets stolen and ends up being used for terrorism acts. After all we all know how cars exchange hands in Nigeria. The car has been entered into the database of the FG but how does that help sort out terrorism? There are different scenarios and it all boils down to the same. It would not solve the issue. Our security forces need to be trained to detect these acts, instead of putting money into white elephant projects that has sole aim of enriching our politicians.

Do you know what a CRB or credit check means? If you do then ask your self if both checks afre carried out on you, do they show if you are illegal or not?

It really doesn't matter what the federal court did in the context of the argument, which is to prove that a persons immigration status can be determined to a large degree, in seconds, on a highway, when they are stopped and searched, because of the driver license database.

That sort of capability is what Nigeria is trying to develop in the long run. It would be a very powerful tool against terrorism.
There you go again, I thought you said it was based on the vehicle database. The police or immigrations officer do not need your drivers license to determine if you are illegal or not. That is why when you apply for visa or a passport your details are entered into a central database system including your picture. Once they get you with little info gotten off you they can tell what your status is.

Mate get your facts straight.

. . .Standard practice in the Western World. If you don't know, keep quiet. cool

We just have to keep preaching to the rocks and stones in our dear country, begging them to put a sock in their mouth and sod off, so the place can develop.
There again another ignorant answer. What has stopping and searching using immigration data base got to do with database on cars?

Keep pulling up more stuff to show how ignorant you are. Immigration data base has nothing whatsoever to do with Vehicle data base. It is standard practice that once in a while you are stopped by immigrations officers who have equipment to check based on your identity and not the car you drive if you are illegal or not. This same equipment is given to the police and not in all countries like you would lead us to believe, and just to let you know in case you do not, is not part of the police database but immigrations.

So my question again to you, what does a vehicle database do for you if you do not have a human database.

I don't know if you have ever been stopped on a street in Europe or the US while driving. You will quickly find that the police can determine a lot about your car right on the spot, they can tell if you are the driver or not, if you are legally in the country etc. grin grin grin grin
I would think such capabilities are handy in the fight against terrorism, wouldn't you?

As for a data on Nigerians who drive cars, there are enough rich sources, from passports, to INEC, to mobile phones etc. huh huh huh So fly on another trajectory, sir, cos you just crashed woefully.

With due respect, your question is redundant and the Nigerians amongst us that question GEJ's posting of the news on facebook that are the truly foolish ones among us. Thank you.
Your response just showed me how ignorant you are. I see i have been wasting my time chatting with you. PS did you get that idea from your sitting room in Nigeria? They can do that and there are loads of illegal immigrants in their countries.

I wonder if we are talking of the same country, where i can buy a passport off the streets or where we have ghost votershuh??

Yea now we truly know who the foolish ones are.

Why talk loudly and forcefully about things you no absolutely nothing about? How would you describe a person that does that? angry
Ok explain to me how a vehicle database helps check terrorism. Tell me how by the push of a button you get to know who has ever driven a car. Where does the button get the feedback from? How does this work if there are no CCTV's on the road? That's me thinking and wondering WTF!!!!

I have not said Nigerians are stupid like you have portrayed. I have just asked simple questions to get everyone thinking, which you obviously are not ready to do. You cannot have a database of cars when you do not have one for the humans driving them. how do you match them to know who owns what. These are the type of questions we should be asking the president instead of being sentimental and supporting every stupid thing he places in front of us.

The president is the one who is being rude to Nigerians by making statements like the one he posted on facebook. He makes all Nigerians seem foolish even though we are one of the smartest people on the planet.

Of course there is much more (use your imagination, its a rich resource), but if you think none of the above can help fight terrorism, then you can't be helped. grin grin grin grin grin

Did u read GEJ's speech?

LOL.

Here is what he said:

Last Friday I launched a comprehensive database on all Vehicles in Nigeria designed to link every vehicle to its owner/operator such that vehicles can be traced within seconds. This is part of proactive steps we are taking as part of a review of our national security architecture to lay greater emphasis on intelligence and citizens' participation in security surveillance. Terrorism has no conscience and spares no one. We must stand together against terror in its destructive manifestations. GEJ
cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy

One more question do we now have CCTV on our roads in Nigeria? Or are the policemen going to carry hidden cameras so they can get a glimpse of who has driven a car. What about our corrupt officials who would happily hand out more than one license plate to an individual.

What about the fact that the car would have been stolen by the suicide bomber? apparently he would not go to the police and say i stole a car to bomb the country.

C'mon we are smarter than this. I can give a million flaws. Like someone correctly said we should start with data on citizens, cause this would not help us catch a single terrorist but rather help our inept police and security forces harass innocent citizens.

Foreign AffairsRe: The Lies Against Brother Leader Muammar Gaddafi by Dauchman(m): 7:24pm On Aug 29, 2011
Why are Nigerians so not smart. The OP has posted several videos, with input from even European citizens and Russia, telling us Ghadaffi has done nothing wrong and still people open their big mouth to say rubbish. What you don't understand is colonialism is on its way again but in a different form.

Someone listed a list of former British colonies and said they are all doing fine. You sit in your homes in Nigeria and decided that. Have you visited any of those countries. Have you met people from those countries and discussed with them. China is the 2nd largest economy but what percentage of people in China have a good standard of living, same in India.

Ghaddafi has always stood against the west, he has brought up ideas that would make us over run the west but as usual we have refused to listen. I remember him saying before all the chaos in Libya started that oil producing states should stop selling oil to the west in dollars but in Gold, this would further cripple the economies of the west. Do you think the west do not realise the threat Ghadaffi poses to them. We should start seeing the big picture and stop being fooled by the west. Also like a lot of people have asked, is the same situations not going on in Syria, why hasn't NATO bombed Syria yet? The king of Saudi Arabia and the queen of UK have been there before I was born, no one has called them dictators. Scotland and Wales have asked to leave the union but England has refused, why hasn't NATO bombed England.

Don't you all worry very soon they would visit Nigeria again in the guise that GEJ is the one causing the bombings going on in Nigeria at the moment then your eyes would be open.

Whose salary gets to be cut here? That of NASS which she probably has no power over? Or that of the ordinary civilian who only weeks ago rejoiced that he/she finally gets a wage increase after almost a decade of crying for help?
The obvious answer to this is the salary of civil servants. She cannot touch the salaries of NASS as it must go to GEJ for approval first. GEJ is a politician, he would be stupid to touch the salaries of the reps because they can ruin him.

And this woman gets it wrong again, you cannot clean the Nigerian economy without reducing the level of corruption in the country. GEJ and the members of NASS are perpetrators of corruption at the highest level. Even if we bring the best economists in the world to clean up Nigeria, if we do not reduce corruption, then all would be futile. We have seen that all her work reducing foreign debt ( which was a blunder in the first place) has amounted to nothing as Nigeria is back in the same position as she was before.

Let us sit and watch, it would be the same like it always has until we the masses say we are tired.

Well goodluck to you! huh  angry  angry
That's why IBB said a few years back that the youths of Nigeria have nothing to offer and i said even though its insulting the fella was absolutely correct. It seems we have gone backwards by ten years. We hardly produce any smart person from our schools any more. This is basic economics that can be measured by anyone with common sense (the saying that sense is not common seems to be the case here). Prices are flying up by the hour and someone tells you that inflation has dropped to single digit and you accept whole heartedly. When last did you buy anything in Nigeria with a =N=1 coin? I cry for Nigeria.

This is a simple definition of inflation for the benefit of those who do not know
In economics, inflation is a rise in the general level of prices of goods and services in an economy over a period of time.
I hope after this simple lay man definition you can now start thinking for yourselves. SMH in total disbelief!!!!!!

Islamic banks are doing just fine. You need to do a proper research to understand how they work. In fact Europe has been advised to consider using the principles of islamic banking to revive their economies. The arabs are fairing better with it. Its not about the name but the principles.
BusinessRe: CBN Revokes The Licenses Of Afribank, Spring Bank And Bank PHB by Dauchman(m): 11:40am On Aug 06, 2011
@Lastpage
Time will tell!
You can "confuse" some of the people, some of the time but you cannot "confuse" all the people, all the time!

Peeps have been telling us Sanusi was trying to save the banks from its present "management"!
Question is: Who appointed the "present management"? Answer: SANUSI himself!

All said and done, its not "what" Sanusi does or "How" he does it that matters, What matters is the RESULT!

What does Sanusi's "score-card", as CBN Governor tell us?

The simplest indicator of the success or failure of a CBN Governor is the CURRENCY of that country!

When Sanusi came-in as Governor, Naira rate as as follows:

$1 = #125
1GBP = #230
€1 = 165   for the major currencies.

What of TODAY?

$1 = #158
1GBP = #256
€1 = #233

Now, note that the "crash" of the Naira is "as it is", despite the following:

a.)American dollar is at its lowest in terms of real value as a result of the recession, the debt and the seemingly unending trio of multiple wars, unemployment and political wrangling

b.) The Euro is also at its lowest as a result of the groups toxic debt/bail out of the 'PIGS' (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain).
To add salt to the Euro's injury, Italy which is the second biggest economy within the E.U, is in tatters and "will" also collapse in a matter of weeks. These factors combined make it seems like the Euro as a single currency will either fail totally or some E.U states (like Germany) will have to opt out.

c.) The U.K has seen no growth for some time now, its income has shrunk drastically and the only song it is singing to its citizens (including its military complex!) is Cuts, Cuts and Cuts! Its in a quasi-recession. Its currency has also weakened.

All the above has ensured that all these foreign currencies are under-valued!

Now imagine, if the above where not the case? "Discount these situations" and guess what the "real value" of the NAIRA is, relative to world currencies!

If this is not enough "sign" to show any wary observer that the current leadership of the CBN is a colossal failure, nothing will, EXCEPT WHEN ALL OUR (Nigerians) INVESTMENTS ARE WIPED OUT!

He can deploy all his P.R for all l care but l urge everyone to keep a close eye on how the NAIRA is nose-diving, same way the "value" of our assets are nose-diving!
No need for big grammar or some fancy words! And dont tell me he is "deliberately devaluing the naira"!
The naira is almost shyte, by itself.

May God help this country and save us from these silly experimentations and its "naughty Professor"

Just my take!
I do not know where you got this ideology from but i can confidently tell you that there are a lot of countries out there who prefer to have their currency devalued in order for them to have economic growth. You have countries like China and Japan in this regards. You cannot measure a Central Bank Governor's performance by the value of the currency but by several macro economic variables like inflation, interest rates, etc. also note that even though SLS appointed those interim management it would be worthy to note that he cannot be in all 10 banks at the same time to monitor what they were doing. The only problem i had with him was the manner in which he carried out the exercise and some banks that escaped the hammer even though most of us knew the state of those banks. In my opinion he should have quietly eased out the former management and then asked the non-executive board members to appoint a new executive which the CBN would have ratified.

Well i must say if this were to be in another country say for instance Britain or South Africa, etc. I would not lose an ounce of sleep over this, but considering this is Nigeria, where what we see is not really what is, I have to keep one eyebrow raised. Very good policy which if used for the proper intent would save the economy, as we all know that banks are generally considered TOO BIG TO FAIL, cause when one fails it always has a trickle down effect on the whole economy.

I just pray this is not an orchestrated act by SLS.

One of the world‘s leading banks, HSBC, has shut several accounts operated by the Redeemed Christian Church of God in its branch on Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn , New York, United States.

Empowered Newswire reports that the bank branch, which is located in the same area as the RCCG parish, International Chapel, Brooklyn, said its action was based on its decision to stop transacting business with Nigerians.

”HSBC’s recent refusal to continue their banking relationship with our church (International Chapel Brooklyn of The Redeemed Christian Church of God) was on the grounds that we are Nigerians and that they will not ‘deal’ with Nigerians,” said a member and official of the church in New York under condition of anonymity.

The development was confirmed by officials of the bank, who said the financial institution was at liberty to do so.

They did not, however, offer any explanation for the action.

She was Finance minister during OBJ's tenure what did she do, take all our reserves and pay-off foreign debt and we all think that was a wise thing to do. Where has that move gotten us, did it improve the economy? Infact tell me if i am wrong, that was all she did during her tenure and we all clapped hands for her. Has any of you looked at the debt portfolio of the world powers or even the present fast growing economies, eg Brazil, China, India, they owe way more than we did. After paying our debt did it stop us from incurring more debt or did it change the way the west perceives Nigeria. We hd local contractors who hould have been paid so that they would create jobs for Nigerians but she didnt think it was appropriate to pay them first. I remember at some point she was going to lay off civil servants and bring in people who had 2:1 to work in ministries, is that the kind of person we need as finance minister. Does she know the implication of that to the economy.

I was in Nigeria during Xmas last year and it was hell trying to use my card to pay for things. I know how many of my friends come to canada from Nigeria and have issues using Nigeria issued cards. The proper infrastructure is not in place. Right now not a vast majority of the populace uses e-payments, then imagine what would happen next year when everyone is forced to use them. SportsRe: Kanu Or Jay Jay : Who Was Bigger Player? by Dauchman(m): 5:41pm On Jun 17, 2011
Can't we be civil to each other, this is just a simple question even though ambiguous.

If i was asked who was a better player between the 2, then the answer would be Okocha.

But if i was asked who was more successful between the 2, then the answer would be Kanu.

It should be noted that Okocha even though no where as successful as Kanu, remains more famous than Kanu. People world over would rather see Jay Jay play over Kanu.

Also to be noted, Kanu is the most successful player ever to come out of Nigeria. Also one of the best players to come out of our great country.

Both players contributed immensely in whatever team they played in.

@baby-boy kanu was not a lazy player, his slowness was what made his game. Kanu had deft passes. And just a reminder of the 3 goals scored againt Chelsea in 10mins. That is the trademark of a deadly player. There were other great moments. And he is also very popular in the UK, people love him.

@starboard I totally disagree with your statement "he is not fit to tie Kanu's lace" Even kanu himself knows what Jay jay is worth, he may not have won all the titles in the world but he is a player on the lips of many fans of football world over.

@Kabukabu50 Finidi was a great player wish we could have someone like him in the team again. But i disagree with you about Kanu and Okocha being overated. Those two are the Nigerian players known worldwide with the most contribution to the game of football.
BusinessRe: CBN Imposes Limits, Penalty On Cash Transactions, Again! by Dauchman(m): 10:58pm On May 02, 2011
I think some people have gotten the wrong idea. The CBN is not saying you cannot take out more than 150k from your account at any given time, the thing is you cannot take it out as cash or you get fined, so you have to use some form of e-payment to do this.

I think the right questions now would be to ask the CBN how they intend to make e-payments work properly before enforcing this, considering that power and the infrastructure needed to have a good payment system is not in place. For example our internet services is still light years behind. And of course the banks cannot improve this on their own. There has to be very good and fast payment systems on ground for this to work. So that people can sit in their homes, on their banks internet banking page they can make transfers to anyone in the country and outside the country, without having to go to the bank.

They have to consider all the necessary things needed before adopting this new measure in 2012 or it would cause chaos instead of helping the system.

P.S a cashless society is very ideal, it would save a lot of problems if we get it right. It would also help reduce corruption as we would have evidence of every transaction carried out.

This is the same reason why the UK would continue it's downward spiral. This statement is the dumbest thing i have read so far ( No insult intended to the writer).

While I congratulate GEJ in advance, it is quite clear that the future of Nigeria lies with the Nigerians. They have voted for someone they believe is the best candidate to drive the Country forward. GEJ deserves the victory and it is clear that Voters voted for a candidate who will advance Nigerians and not a political Party. I think the Country is becoming better grounded into democracy even with the better representation of all Parties in the National Assemblies. The support for GEJ should continue as National policies and strategic directions start to emerge. This is the full meaning of "GEJ all the way". My theory is if you can support him to win an Election, you can support him to run the Nation.
I quite disagree with you (my personal opinion), I think the voting was based mainly on ethnicity. And that for me is not democracy.
