azimibraun:While GEJ too was lax about Boko Haram, Obasanjo is actually to blame for ever letting the terrorist group have a field day and enough time and latitude to make a lot of converts beginning from 2002 right under his unfortunate administration of waste and massacres of innocent civilians in Odi and Zakibiam. |
Princedapace:But when they asked for separation from the South, wasn't it your own greed-propelled political forebears too from your SE region that insisted on one-Nigeria and therefore prevailed on the British overlords not to allow them go? The way your Southeastern folks blame the North for the very creation of Nigeria baffles me. You Igbos find it just difficult to admit that you people cemented us together in this contraption in pursuit of a dubious agenda which you only came to hate because it later boomeranged. Even the constitution you claim to be useless was actually made useless by none other than another brother of yours from the SE. Everyone knew from the beginning that Nigeria amalgamation was a historic fraud and therefore wanted it reversed but you Igbos said no way. So why are you crying today? |
greatness77:So you knew deep down in your minds that you didn't believe in one Nigeria when you invented the slogan as far back as in the fifties? That means you just purposely set out to deceive the other tribes back then in pursuit of a dubious agenda. Or don't you know it was an Igbo man that invented the fraudulent one-Nigeria philosophy and kept on propagating it even when all the other tribes were realistically saying that there was actually nothing like oneness in Nigeria? |
State Police would have long nipped all these instances of violence in the bud through intelligence gathering and proactive onslaught on the perpetrators at the embryonic stages of their formation and recruitment of members but these same Northerners deprecated all motions for decentralization of the police in all confabs and National Assembly sessions on the argument that it would be abused by governors for electoral heist amidst the possibility of it metamorphosing into regional secession army. So let them keep being slaughtered by bandits in order to keep enjoying the fallacious inability of governors to perpetrate political heist and the delusional non-existence of secessionist army in all regions. These people are just far from the reality that a centralized police system is always the very cause of insecurity in a highly populated multi-ethnic country like Nigeria. The day they realize it is the day Nigeria will begin to see genuine solutions to the present insecurity scourge. |
Akwamkpuruamu:Seems you are suggesting that Ironsi was such a stark illiterate who didn't even know the meaning of the words he used in composing his own May 24 1966 national broadcast else explain what exactly he meant with the bolded expressions in the broadcast as below: Ironsi's broadcast to the nation - May 24, 1966. Fellow Nigerians: During the past two weeks I presided over meetings of the Supreme Military council and the Central Executive Council at which many important state matters were considered. . . It is now three months since the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was handed over to the Armed Forces. Now that peace has been restored in the troubled areas it is time that the Military Government indicates clearly what it proposes to accomplish before relinquishing power. The removal of one of the obstacles on the way is provided for in the Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree (No. 5) 1966 which was promulgated by me today and comes into effect at once. The provisions of the Decree are intended to remove the last vestiges of the intense regionalism of the recent past, and to produce that cohesion in the governmental structure which is so necessary in achieving, and maintaining the paramount objective of the National Military government, and indeed of every true Nigerian, namely, national unity. The highlights of this Decree are as follows: The former regions are abolished, and Nigeria grouped into a number of territorial areas called provinces. . . . Nigeria ceases to be what has been described as a federation. It now becomes simply the Republic of Nigeria. The former Federal Military government and the Central Executive Council become respectively the National Military Government and the executive Council. All the Military Governors are members of the Executive Council. A Military Governor is assigned to a group of provinces over which and subject to the direction and control of the Head of the National Military Government, he shall exercise executive power. In order to avoid any major dislocation of the present administrative machinery, the grouping of the provinces has been made to coincide with the former regional boundaries. This is entirely a transitional measure and must be understood as such. The present grouping of the provinces is without prejudice to the Constitutional and Administrative arrangements to be embodied in the New Constitution in accordance with the wishes of the people of Nigeria. The National Military Government assumes the exercise of all legislative powers throughout the Republic subject to such delegations to Military Governors as are considered necessary for purposes of efficient administration. The public services of the former federation and regions become unified into one national public service under a National Public Service Commission.. There is a provincial Service Commission for each group of provinces to which is delegated functions in respect of public officers below a given rank........ |
OmoEpe:Even if Ironsi were to rise from his grave now to confess to the abolition of regional system, these kinsmen of his on Nairaland will accuse him of lying against himself to please Hausafulanis and Yorubas. |
Igboid:The Igbo man and his penchant to introduce insult into a debate sailing on facts and logic. You are the one typing rubbish. Else how do you just dismiss an evidence with an assumption rather than with superior contrary facts? So the Orji Kalu whose media house published the story and didn't edit away that part was also a Gowon's lapdog? Ojukwu's associates and lieutenants have been alive since Asiodu made this submission but they have never rebutted it. So why are you here doing it for him? |
Igboid:But Arthur Nzeribe who accepted from Gowon the contract of importing the very arms and amunition used by the Nigeria Army to perpetrate those massacres in Asaba could be trusted so much that in 1979 ( i.e. just seven years after the war), he was voted massively by Ndigbo to represent them in the Senate to the humiliation of the very Ojukwu whom Ndigbo claim is their hero, and again it was repeated in 1999 when the same Arthur Nzeribe was voted to the Senate from his constituency in Alaigbo. Hmmmmm. And more importantly, Ojukwu was alive when Philip Asiodu granted that interview but he never issued any rebuttal. So what does that tell you about the veracity of Asiodu's submission? |
Akwamkpuruamu:Here is a narration from Philip Asiodu an Igbo/Igboid man who was part and parcel of the events of those times. The account itself was also published by an Igbo man owned newspaper, The Sun: https://www.sunnewsonline.com/impunity-killing-nigeria-phillip-asiodu/ Note where the report reads: Emeka Ojukwu and myself were very good friends in school, Kings College, Lagos, and Oxford University. In fact when the coup happened, he wanted me to join him in Enugu and I told him that I was not a regional man. And Ojukwu told me ‘we shall abolish the regions within 6 months’. |
Akwamkpuruamu:If regionalism was going on during Gowon's early days in office as you would love to purport, then how come the number one item on the agenda for Aburi was the abrogation of Ironsi's decrees and a return to the status quo ante? |
Akwamkpuruamu:Acute misgovernance was birthed in Nigeria by your brother Aguiyi Ironsi when the destroyed the structure that was perfectly working Nigeria towards a global force status. |
joyandfaith:Could you please tell us the tribe of Nnamdi Azikiwe and his followers who declared publicly that they would pay the ultimate price to keep Nigeria together at a time most other tribes began asking for the breakup of Nigeria for being created fraudulently by the whites? |
aribisala0:That moniker is not an Edo person. He is Igbo hiding under the claim of being Edo. |
Amumaigwe:Care providing evidence that Awolowo was the one who so advised Gowon? What was Zik's own role in the whole saga? I mean Zik' the Mr. One Nigeria. |
miniziter:In my neighbourhood where I currently live in Lagos, I have a Yoruba friend who goes by the name Sanni Iyiola Sanni, and a co-tenant going by the name Aishat Bello. We all know that Sanni and Bello are Nupe and Hausa names. But does that make these neighborhood friends of mine Hausas or Nupes? Do our bearing of English names like Douglas, Williams, George, Henry, etc make us white men and women? Your boss must have a native name which. Ask him to tell you and you will be surprised you it is not Yoruba-sounding in anyway. Also ask your boss to speak his native language, and if you understand a single sentence in it as a Yoruba person, you can come back here to call me a liar. In the middle belt parts of Nigeria most communities speak Hausa but when they speak their own indegenous language the Hausa man is totally lost. |
miniziter:They don't speak Yoruba. Funny you quoted Wikipedia which anybody could edit to suit their sentiments. I just listed out some native names of the people and I had expected you to tell us their meanings if you think they are Yoruba words. I repeat, the languages spoken are Etuno, Ososo Okpameri, Uneme Okpe,Ikpeshi, Atteh, etc None of them has any linguistic affinity with Yoruba Language. People who speak Yoruba in Akoko-Edo are the Yorubas who come to the place in large numbers from neighbouring Ondo State for commercial pursuits. No Akoko-Edo native speaks Yoruba as mother tongue. The only actual Yoruba people that ever existed in Akoko-Edo were a village called Imeri whose natives actually speak Yoruba as mother tongue, but while they were in Akoko-Edo they never felt comfortable hence kept complaining of being among strangers. During the 1991 creation of states and boundary adjustment, IBB listened to their cries and carved them into Ondo State to join their kit and kin just across the boundary. You can google search The history of Imeri Village in Ondo State to see for yourself. If Akoko-Edo people are Yorubas, then why did Imeri people find themselves as strangers in their midst and wanted to leave? https://guardian.ng/sunday-magazine/boundary-dispute-two-communities-in-edo-and-ondo-states-on-edge/ Note where the report reads thus: The issue on ground is the effort to determine the exact boundaries between Okpe in Akoko Edo and Imeri in Ondo State. If you must know, Imeri was one of the communities of Okpe in Akoko Edo before now. And since the Imeri people decided to move over to Ondo State, the boundaries will now have to be adjusted between Edo and Ondo States. So kindly explain why Imeris decided to move away from Akoko-Edo LGA to Ose LGA in Ondo State if Akoko-Edo is a Yoruba territory. |
miniziter:Akoko-Edo people are not Yoruba speaking at all. Don't let the Akoko tag in the name mislead you into assumptions. In Akoko-Edo the languages spoken are Etuno, Ososo, Okpameri, Uneme, Okpe, Ikpeshi, Atteh, etc and none of them is mutually intelligible with Yoruba. Akoko-Edo languages have alphabets z, v and even the ch sound which are all absent in Yoruba. The Akoko tag in the name doesn't connote Yorubaness but a geographical proximity to the Akokos of Ondo State. Akoko-Edo simply means the Edo people who are geographical neighbours to the Akokos. They borrowed the Akoko tag as a result of inability to agree on a home made name to reflect their ethnic diversity in the area. You may doubt all these but below are some native Akoko-Edo names which obviously a Yoruba person would not know what they mean; Okondo, Pendo, Ajimego, Onyonnude, Oyonorifo, Asesho, Ashofo, Emmasealu, Oghene, Agenemeshe, Ozioma, Aviogana, Oshikowa, Lawani, Oyerei, Oremei, Igbelazor, Eneze, Eshioshine, Eshemokai, etc. |
Papito:After failing in his first term, he was given a second chance but he even failed more badly. Why? |
AntonVince:Did Obasanjo win his own SW to become president in 1999? |
JOemmy:It is obvious you have never come across the historical account in which Awolowo, trusting in his own administrative wizzardry to economically advance the entire Western Region beyond the reach of the rest, proposed that federal capital be moved out of Yorubaland entirely to either the North or your own Eastern Region but your political forebeares led by Azikiwe rejected the proposal in order not to lose the premise on which they were pressing the colonial authorized to declare Lagos a no man's land. Why do you think Awolowo was such an unrepentant advocate of true federalism and resources control if he felt Lagos or any part of Yorubaland needed crude oil revenues from the present SS or SE to develop it? Are you even aware that those who imposed this present system that makes it possible for the oil revenues of the SS to be gifted to all other regions undeservedly were you own very SE people? |
Funny seeing those who celebrated FFK as a hero while he was in PDP now calling him afonja and insinuating that he is unprincipled just because he dumped their beloved party. FFK is far more principled than them because if he returns to PDP tomorrow their tune will surely change again. We have seen it happen before |
wink2015:In actual fact and contrary to your insinuation above, Northerners stood for the genuinely federal structure which Southerners are now asking for a return to through restructuring demands. It was Southerners, specifically Igbos, that destroyed that structure and replaced it with this current one in pursuit of a selfish objective. Northerners repeatedly warned that any attempt to tamper with that original structure would send Nigeria into a doom it may never recover from. But the Igbo HOS in power at that time stubbornly and blindly went ahead to impose this present structure on the country despite Northern leaders visiting him twice as a delegation to beg him to perish the idea of experimening with unitary system. Then just after the Igbo HOS had stubbornly destroyed that truly federal structure, Northerners in response began to ask for a break up of Nigeria but the same Igbo HOS would not bulge hence Northerners had to grudgingly remain back in the dubious and fraudulent one-Nigeria being created by Igbos through their abolition of the initial structure. They also feared that what had happened to Isaac Boro in the hands of the Igbo HOS and Ujukwu for declaring secession earlier on could be repeated on them if they didn't give up. Why the North now seems not to favour restructuring today is simply the fact that the introduction of Unitary system by Igbos made everyone abandon their agriculture based economy for crude oil which proceeds the unitary system made accessible to everyone hence making it difficult to restore the abandoned farms and plantations of over 50 years ago. Even most Southern states will bleed for want of something to fall back to in an event of sudden return to the strict federalism we started with at independence. |
onelovenigeria:Recall that Bayelsa was roundly won by Tinubu's party in their last guber election which was adjudged free and fair by even the PDP. APC holds out a better promise of exclusively zoning its ticket to the SS in future than the PDP through which power only came to the SS by accident. |
oluwaahmed:The Edo issue wasn't much about Tinubu but Oshiomhole who imposed Obaseki and Shuaibu on the party. Then the slimness of the margin in that election makes it not a bold statement of Tinubu's rejection. Moreover, a lot of folks in Edo State have fallen into regret on later seeing what is currently happening in the state. On the issue of betrayal of Jonathan, without Tinubu's support he wouldn't have ever become president in 2011. Moreover GEJ himself has been working for the APC since he left Aso Rock. APC overwhelmingly won Bayelsa 2019 guber election on Jonathan's support. |
The SWAGA group should reflect back on the pattern of political alliances of elections of 1959, 1979, 1983, 1993, 1999, 2007 and 2015 and tell how possible this tall dream of having the SE support a SW candidate for the apex office in preference for their old friends - Hausafulanis. At independence, Northerners naturally preferred Yorubas as political partners on account of sharing certain certain cultural elements like monarchical system and religious mapping. They never wanted an alliance with Igbos but had to reluctantly accept it due to Awolowo's rejection of the North-West proposed alliance on behalf of the Yorubas, and seeking an ideology-based partnership with Igbos which Igbos themselves declined in preference for Hausafulanis. Even after the Hausafulani-Igbo alliance boomeranged on Igbos and culminated in a war which decimated them in millions, it still remained attractive to them into all subsequent elections. So if Yorubas think that such mindset of Igbos has changed or will change in 2023, then they are having a serious nightmare. |
onuman:But why is it that whenever it comes to the issue of Igbo presidency, you Igbos don't seem to feel that the injustice is actually coming from your beloved PDP which is currently reluctant to give you people her 2003 as a matter of a right owing to how much you have invested your emotions and loyalty unquestioningly and religiously in the last 22 years? If Tinubu and APC refuse the APC ticket being zoned to the SE, it will be quite understood given how much Igbos rejected, insulted and cursed the party in 2015 when it offered to the SE the proposal that the region support the party for 2015 in exchange for 2023 ticket. Had Igbos accepted that offer back then, I can bet you that Tinubu would have been nowhere nursing any 2023 ambition now. |
onelovenigeria:Kindly speak for your SE and leave out the SS which you aren't part of. Thanks. |
Mexicanbreed:Hell would by now have been let loose with accusations of Islamization and Fulanization agenda. |
Sholaco:Exactly. They had been saying all before now that since he had joined APC his sins had become forgiven, but now that EFCC has taken him up, their tune has changed to "He is reaping the fruits of his betrayal of the PDP". Nigerian masses are the most shameless hypocrites in the world. Very shifty and inconsistent folks. |
JavaScript90:Nigerians also looked away when it happened to Odi and Zakibiam to even larger scales. Likewise Nigeria looked away when it happened in Gbaramatu community in Delta State. Now if we are too compare the casualty figures; Odi and Zakibiam recorded over 5,000 deaths while Gbaramatu recorded over 3,000. With Oyigbo's case being just 70+ it will follow from your argument that the people of Odi, Zakibiam and Gbaramatu are far more hated than Igbos. |
Hashabiah:You have forgotten the Maitatsine movement which ravaged Nigeria all through the times of supposed military behemoths like Gowon, Murtala Mohammed and Obasanjo save Shagari the pure civilian in whose regime the head of the movement was caught and finished off. But then reared its ugly head again under IBB another military behemoth. The democratic institutions you adjudge as idiotic on account of stalling investigations into violence were actually made idiotic in this dispensation by the military establishment which largely formed the ruling class since 1999. We all know how much Obasanjo and Atiku weakened the legislature and judiciary hence the emergence of strong men and weak institutions today. The Obasanjo who introduced bribery and corruption into the National Assembly and also signed into law the humongous allowances of the federal legislators which use such allowances to finance terrorists as you rightly deduce, was from which establishment? The same Obasanjo who publicly confessed to being aware of the existence of Boko Haram since 2002 (i.e. under his administration) but left them to fester and grow for the reason of his pursuit of political capital is of which establishment? Now ask yourself why Yaradua who had less of military credentials was the only one who could for the first and only time order soldiers and police to storm Boko Haram hideouts in Kano and wipe out over 800 of them within six hours on a particular day. Jonathan the bloody civilian fought Boko Haram better than Obasanjo the retired Army General. Didn't you ever read it in the news that Obasanjo once visited the Boko Haram leadership and gave them a gift running into millions of Naira thus further encouraging them? Which president of purely civilian background has ever done that in our history? By your accusations of Kalu and others of looting as civilian rulers, you seem to forget the $12.2bn Gulf War windfall loot which happened under IBB, the unquantifiable Abacha loot which is still being recovered till tomorrow, the, mountainous looting by Abdulsalami Abubakar within his short stay. After Nzeogwu and co had murdered Balewa, Ahmadu Bello and the rest on allegations of corruption, revelations which later came up proved those figures to have died as paupers and this still forms the basis of the North's unquenchable ill-feelings towards the Igbos and its attendant perpetual lack of national unity which is largely responsible for the tension everywhere. We must be careful the way we over exaggerate the negative activities of politicians. Where democracy is working today, e.g. the USA, UK, Germany, etc; it didn't begin to work perfectly from day one. It only got refined over time through constant amendments to the constitution to address any loopholes newly discovered at any point in time. Military intervention in politics has never progressed any country and Nigeria can't be an exception. Haiti gained independence in 1810 (just 34 years behind the US) and started with democracy but soon fell into military rule which existed there till 1994 when the US had to forcefully uproot a military regime to pave way for civilians. Because of protracted military rule which lasted in Haiti for 184 years, Haiti is so backward and almost 500 years behind the USA which it gained independence with about the same time. Till today citizens of Haiti still bath in streams and defeacate in bushes and water bodies while easily curable diseases still kill them all due to long years of military rule. Some of them still sleep on beds made of parallel alignment of naked bamboo poles. It is that bad. Military intervention in politics leads to donkey years of retrogression. |
Hashabiah:And you comfortably forgot that this present democracy, which in your opinion has failed and killed many people, has been largely run by the same military. What we had in 1999 was simply an extension of military rule with the actors changing attire from kakhi to either agbada or suits. Pray tell me where Obasanjo and Atiku the pioneers of this democracy came from if not the military establishment. The Yaradua who succeeded Obasanjo was from what kind of family? Obasanjo favoured him because he was a younger brother to his colleagues in the army. What about David Mark who led the most important institution of democracy for eight years? You think he had been a pure civilian all before then? What of the presently incumbent Buhari? Jonathan's clinching of power was accidental so I left him off mention. The period about which majority of Nigerians unanimously agree that we had a genuine semblance of good governance was from 1960 to 1966 which was when we were governed by pure civilians and politicians 100%. |
