Some children are on the street because they have no choice while others just prefer or have gotten used to street life. I once did a research on street kids and learnt so much. Also we have a children rehab ministry in church. Some of the children picked from the streets eventually run away even though they are housed, fed and put in good schools or vocational centres to give them solid foundation. The one that really makes me happy is now in the university studying Mech. Eng. on scholarship. Truth is that not all street kids can be rehabilitated. Fashola is trying his best and is only saying that their ingenuity and skills can be better utilised for progress.

This child bride nonsense is sickening. cry VVF, stunted education and abject poverty has been the lot of a majority of these baby brides. Paedophiles are hiding under Islam to perpetrate evil but they will fail woefully. Thanks to the likes of Maryam Uwais, Fati Abubakar etc, we know northern women are capable of achieving great heights if allowed to thrive. The perverts will be put to shame if we resist and keep up the pressure.

Still so disheartening. May their souls rest in perfect peace.
Same prayer for the many students who lost their lives to students activism in years past most especially battles with the military govts on fees. The likes of Kunle Adepeju UI, Akintunde Ojo Unilag, Wemimo Akinbolu et al Unife, some from ABU etc.
May our students learn to eschew cultism and may the govt play its role properly to allow them learn in peace. Amen.

That marked the end of pyrates as the national body stopped their activities.

Not to derail this interesting thread but this reminds me of the day Great Akokites said NO to cultism.
2 days to June exams in 1981 some Pyrates decided to 'sail' thereby disturbing students who needed to shuttle between class and hostel. The students declared total war the next morning, stripping caught pyrates naked and parading them on the street near Moremi hall! Others were caught and beaten to a pulp - thank God for the health centre and a good VC, they all survived but were greastly humbled. Student power works when positively mobilised as in the days of old.

grin funny but true for mini buses. BRT makes life easier where available. You only need to queue and wait patiently for a bus.

Dear brother, I have seen people pulling through worse situations. I believe you have a bright future ahead of you if you are ready to walk with God to achieve your divine purpose. Suicide shouldn't be an option for a hardworking and focussed person like you. Some people move fast early in life to slow down later while some experience delays only to overshadow the early birds later in life. Try and read biographies of successful people. You find that many got to the top by forging ahead against all odds.
Most of the advice given to you are reasonable. Note also that going to poly doesn't stop you from becoming a university graduate. You only need to pass well so you can go for direct entry after OND. Someone close to me had to settle for NCE after GCE A Levels cos she couldn't gain admission. Today she is a masters degree holder. Another person who took this route had a 1st class when he eventually gained admission. He also became a chartered accountant and is currently working in the US after retiring from an international company here!

As long as you have life, there's hope. Trust in God and be determined to succeed. Don't chicken out, you are not a coward. We will rejoice with you soon by Gods grace.

Politics › Re: Ibadan's new look (roads and infrastructures) by delpee(f): 11:17pm On Jul 03, 2013
Nice pics! Ibadan has truly changed drastically. Each time i visit now theres something new!
Those who want to see modern structures/mansions should visit New Bodija, Iyaganku, Ashi, Akobo, Oluyole, Ring Rd area, Idi Ishin, Jericho, Agodi GRA, Idi Ape etc. Most of the elites and young achievers live in those places. The intellectuals who relocated abroad in the 80s also have their houses in those quiet layouts.

Anyway the fact that the roads are wider and clean is enough to gladden the heart. One can now drive through the old city from Gate to Ring rd without encountering any major 'go slow'.

I wonder if Apata/Moor Plantation area has changed too.
Politics › Re: Shoprite Opens In Ibadan by delpee(f): 10:57pm On Jul 02, 2013
nuclearboy: Soon - my weekdays are unreasonably busy, but will, asap, though Jericho get as e be now with the widening of the road. smiley
Thanks. There's much more to see in Ibadan beyond the red roofs of the old city. BTW there is also Idi ishin and other nice areas near Jericho.
Shoprite is no big deal compared to the departmental stores of the 70s and 80s.
I notice that there are beautiful events halls now e.g. the Civic Centre at Agodi GRA and some around ring road.
People only concentrate on the ancient part of the city. The beautiful mansions are in new areas and the GRAs. Truly a thread on the new areas will be nice.
Politics › Re: Shoprite Opens In Ibadan by delpee(f): 10:55pm On Jul 01, 2013
@nuclearboy
Nice pics.

Bere is looking really good! No traders / danfo drivers blocking the road and the environment is clean. Governor has done well. I passed through Iwo Rd on my last visit and was surprised at the transformation and absence of the 'go slow' of the past. The circular/ring road around town being planned will open up new areas and decongest the city hopefully.
I wish we could have pictures of Akobo, Jericho etc.
Politics › Re: Shoprite Opens In Ibadan by delpee(f): 10:38pm On Jun 30, 2013
nuclearboy: I think you'd be surprised if you knew just how many "oldies" are here! The tribal slant here plus the all too common insultive posts keep most quiet!

Kingsway meatpie and coke were a staple returning to Command Bode-Igbo, Goftie (GCI), Queens Apata and ISI in the early eighties!
Reminds me of my school QSI and our neighbors GCI. Great schools indeed!

I also find all the tribal stuff by the younger generation on NL annoying. We never bothered about tribes those days. It was more of
'Though tribes and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand' (the old Naija anthem).
And the insults? Quite amazing! Reason why I read a lot and comment on few. Its sad that most of our youth seem to see everything on tribal basis -no
objectivity. Its difficult having a meaningful chat with people who are heavily biased and ever ready to insult others.
Politics › Re: The Four Plane Hijackers Of Nigeria by delpee(f): 10:58pm On Jun 29, 2013
This was a major event during the June 12 struggle and it was a big surprise. , Going back on memory lane, I remember the hardship in Lagos then. Getting basic needs was difficult because markets were closed during the day and banks didn't operate for a while. The Abacha stove (saw dust in a tin with space in between) saved us from starvation when gas and kerosine were unavailable. Learnt to use coal pot as a better option. We thank God for our lives.
Politics › Re: Shoprite Opens In Ibadan by delpee(f): 9:58pm On Jun 29, 2013
basilo101: south west is well urbanised bt only Lagos is developed, dats y no s/westner cn ever be proud of his/her state, all of dem waste dia telling oda regions to leave lagos 4 them. Ado - ekiti is 70% mud house. Ibadan is nt older dan kano or zaria, dia rusted roofs simply show dat d residents r broke. Enugu is far ahead of ibadan by any standard apart frm size and age. Öne gud thin abt SE is that you keep seeing beautiful mansions bt d bad tin sha is dat dey dnt cluster 2 form large cities as in d SW
The truth is that anyone whose knowledge of Ibadan revolves around the Lagos-Ibadan expressway shouldn't bother to comment on the city. You need to visit New Bodija, Ring Rd, Oluyole, Jericho GRA, Idi Ishin, Ashi, Agodi GRA etc to form an opinion.
The rusted roofs show early development. Fact is Ibadan people have villages but they have family compounds in the ancient parts of the city.
I have been to Enugu several times. Its not bigger nor better than Ibadan in anyway.

I remember the train ride to the chilled, seemingly snowy grotto to see father xmas in kingsway, Ibadan in the 70s. Then we had Kingsway, UTC and Leventis within walking distance from each one at dugbe. Seems shoprite is in that area near Cocoa house.
The stores then stocked virtually everything needed in a home including clothes (e.g. St michael ) and hardware.
The hot meatpie and chilled coke in kingsway was unbeatable. Apparently the forerunner of Mr Biggs!

People should learn to invest in insurance policies, trust funds, childrens education policies etc for their children. A fraction of the cost of a jeep would have taken care of that. Great pity!

Family › Re: The Untold Story Of The Baby Found In OAU Toilet by delpee(f): 7:54pm On Jun 21, 2013
Many of those passing comments here have no experience on the process of childbirth. It is true that an inexperienced mother may feel like emptying her bowels during labor. Nurses usually prevent those in labor from going to the toilet once they feel the head of the baby is positioned for delivery. Any strong push at that time will force the baby out. I believe she just couldnt comprehend what was happening to her.
I admire her courage and pray for her and baby. I trust the campus authorities to give her full support and proper counselling. All that has happened is that she learnt the hard way. God bless her and child. I hope the parents on both sides help the couple so they can complete their studies even if they choose not to marry. God bless her, baby and the father.

I feel so sorry for these young girls. Poverty and ignorance is a bad combination. They don't even know they are being cheated. By the way one wonders if they all got pregnant accidentally or its simply a line of business. May God open their eyes and hearts to better ways of life.

Shame on the wicked sponsors who encourage this anomally.

Security is not about how good your spoken english is. The ogas at the top had earlier explained that he performed very well on his job in Lagos especially with regards to pipeline vandals. I would rather have a performer on the job than the one who knows every little detail (theories) on the job but can't perform.
