CareerRe: Should I Leave My Current Company by DeOTR: 2:29pm On Jan 02, 2024
Your situation is very tricky o. I won't leave my current company for a start up, no matter the money involved, because one of the best thing you can wish for is an employee is stability. Imagine the crisis if things go south just 3 months into the new job.
I remember how as a Dev, I used to drop bag at UBA to go clock in at Wema, before I chose one.
I can't work with any start up full-time, so I can't advise you to do same.

Boss na their Ogas be the problem. A colonel will reduce many things and make us happy for at least a month or two.
A colonel? Have you seen one before?
A have a Colonel still in active service next just next block away. The value of his property alone is nothing less than half a billion naira. Please, how on earth did he make such money?
See I've come to realize that Nigerians, whether on uniform or mufti, would steal as much as the people in government they're criticising. The difference is the opportunity or won't a thief without the opportunity to steal consider himself an honest man?
Our major problem with corruption is, there are no consequences. Our laws are powerless.
PoliticsRe: Tinubu: School Feeding To Gulp N100bn In 2024 by DeOTR: 10:20am On Jan 02, 2024
I think this program should be stopped. It's become an avenue to become rich for public servants, which has defeated the whole purpose.
What Nigerians can not corrupt does not exist. The Nigerians tendencies to get rich by any means possible should be studied in Universities.
It's OK to make billions legitimately, but stealing the future of an entire generation of people in the country just to secure your own future and that of your family is a grave crime I consider worse than genocide.

Do people fear poverty this much, or is it just unchecked human greed?
PoliticsRe: Terrorists Deposited Arms Ahead Of Attacks On Plateau Communities, Says Senator by DeOTR: 1:31pm On Jan 01, 2024
NwokoloOwa:
I just traveled from Abuja to Enugu and I maybe wrong but I think I encountered over 100 police/army/air force/ agricultural inspector/ agbero check points. But majorly check points mounted by security personnel. I moved from Enugu to Anambra same experience of multiple check points some less 500 m to another. Many are just collecting money from road users brazenly and openly. And nobody is say anything. IGP is just blabbing in Abuja. COAS or CDS is saying something in Abuja and officers are doing something totally different.

Why don't we have these density of check points in these know flash points? Why ? When we did a project in those axis, you hardly see check points even though you hear stories suggesting that all is not so well in these communities.

The security guys really need to step up their game. They need to let us know what they want for this nation. An attack for over 48hrs, yet no aerial patrol to at least deter these marauders and give the locals confidence to resist them. So terrible
It's same thing from Abuja to Jos. I don't think you can travel 10 minutes straight without a check point. But as usual, we know these checkpoints are just eye service.
I think Plateau state government should summon the courage to establish something similar to Amotekun in her domain and have it back by a bill passed in the state assembly. It's their responsibility to secure their people. They should not just sit on their palms and watch as this happens every year.

AgricultureRe: Naira Devaluation: Neighbouring Countries, Others Feast On Nigeria’s Cheap Grain by DeOTR: 9:44am On Dec 31, 2023
CodeTemplar:
I disagree. It is a combination of factors. Low productivity is one but printing and circulating excess money "carelessly" is another major factor.
There's no point attaching "carelessly" to printing and circulating excess money. It's already a definition of carelessness. While this might be the major cause of rising inflation in the country, I think it has minimal impact on foreign exchange.
While I believe the rising inflation is not just a Nigerian thing at the moment (at least, from my experience in Egypt and Canada), we imported most of it, due to our dependence on other countries.
AgricultureRe: Naira Devaluation: Neighbouring Countries, Others Feast On Nigeria’s Cheap Grain by DeOTR: 8:51am On Dec 31, 2023
tctrills:
Oga, you have a falling currency and a food shortage. We should be worried about everything.
There is a growing inflation because the supply of food can't meet the demand.
Now you say you don't understand why I am blaming your government right?
Let me explain to you.
The only reason your currency keeps falling is because of very bad decisions made by your government.
We have the 3rd worse performing currency of 2023 and this is leading to inflation.
Our currency is falling because we have a largely unproductive human capital. We should be deliberately devaluing our currency to gain competitive advantage if things were right.
We spend naira, but everytime the value falls, the price of everything goes up. You don't need an expert to tell you our economy is over dependent on importation.
We have food shortage, yes, but how's the strength of our currency suppose to help on that if you're not thinking about importing it?
A nation that can not feed herself, and you want a strong currency? Dey play.
AgricultureRe: Naira Devaluation: Neighbouring Countries, Others Feast On Nigeria’s Cheap Grain by DeOTR: 8:04pm On Dec 30, 2023
tctrills:
You are not making any sense. First, no one is blaming the farmers but to think that the solution is for more people to go into farming shows that you have no understanding of how things work.
Nigeria has more farmers than the EU and US put together yet we can't feed ourselves.
Again, the average Nigerian farmer is poor. I have traveled many of the biggest farming communities in Nigeria and I don't see lots of millionaires. I see very poor and backwards farmers.
You're the one who's not making sense, or rather, you're getting the whole point wrong.
This thread is about people outside the country buying our produce because of the value of our currency. The reason you're cursing the government is what I do not understand. You're only worried about the value of our currency as compared to that of our neighbors which is not a big deal if we're self sufficient. We should only be worried that almost all our farmers are on the subsistence level. Things are hard and getting harder in the country because we depend mostly on countries to meet our basic needs

Objectivist04:
The thing is that if it comes to local investment south eastern states will come second, third, fourth, and fifth after Lagos.

The stretch of road where I live only this year
Roban mall opend, Chicken rebublic opend,. Crunchies opend with another eatry that I can't remember the name with a hotel. These are in one road oo , about 5 other businesses are warming up along that road maybe by next year.
That's a good thing. But I have a different idea of good local investments/production.
I was just thinking the other day NAFDAC bursted some people producing fake products and I was like, why not just create a brand instead of counterfeiting? Aba for instance, should be famous for being home to many indigenous locally owned manufacturing industry, not for fake products. The North should be feeding the whole of Africa instead of being the hotbed of terrorism.
If we have some reasonable levels of self-sufficiency, the value of naira depreciating would be the least of our problems.
We need deliberate efforts to develop our human capital in the area of science, technology, most importantly, in agricultural researches that would lead to breakthroughs.
If I had the power, only science courses would be offered in our schools for the next 50 years.
AgricultureRe: Naira Devaluation: Neighbouring Countries, Others Feast On Nigeria’s Cheap Grain by DeOTR: 1:24pm On Dec 30, 2023
tctrills:
Oga you are not very intelligent.
Now I will try to school you but I am sure it's a waste of time.
In 2020, 1000 naira was equal to 1400 cfa but now, 1800 naira is equal to 1000 cfa.
So yes, Nigerian produce are now very cheap for other countries. But again because you are not producing enough for your local market, you are facing a good shortage leading to an inflation in local prices.
Only an idiot thinks this is great news.
So just imagine you have just a bowl of garri to feed your family of 10 but then you are force to sell it. That's an over simplified way of explaining it to you.
The farmers are free to sell their produce to the highest bidders.
If the citizens are productive, we won't be here talking about weak currency. If you're not happy about this news, go into farming and sell for cheaper.

PoliticsRe: 27 States Attracted Zero Foreign Investments In 9 Months by DeOTR: 10:51am On Dec 30, 2023
Foreign investment doesn't equate development in every sense, it mostly signifies capital flights in the real sense.
Take foreign investments in the oil sectors for instance, more than 90+% of the dividends are going to people outside of Africa and these are also part of the foreign investment we talk about.
Let's not even start with the discriminatory compensation system these foreigners practice in their organization. I would be worried only if there's no investment at all.

PoliticsRe: Ondo New Governor, Aiyedatiwa Changes Look, Removes Signature 'Aketi Beard' by DeOTR: 8:22am On Dec 29, 2023
mohbadliveson:
Hours after the death of Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, his deputy (now successor), Lucky Aiyedatiwa has removed the signature 'Aketi beard' which gave him an almost identical look like his erstwhile principal.

Aiyedatiwa has been keeping his beard, moustache and hairs on both sides of his cheeks to grow grey looking more as Akeredolu’s look-alike before he was picked as deputy governor in July 2020.

Akeredolu, aged 67, passed away on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment for prostate cancer in a German hospital. Aiyedatiwa was sworn-in later in the day.

Arriving for his swearing-in, it was notices that Aiyedatiwa has removed the hairs on his side cheeks and left only the ones on his beard and moustache.

A government source told our correspondent that this will be the Governor's look henceforth.

During my initial interview I gave a figure that was above my current pay, now they insist on me providing the payslip before proceeding to the next stage of the employment process.

The thing is I have monthly bonuses not captured on the payslip and I fear not providing evidence would make me disqualified for the role.

Who has navigated such process before as I don't know what to do.

Is it even legal to ask for payslips?

Will they actually contact my current employer to verify the payslip?

Note: it's a financial institution. I heard they are fond of doing this during their recruitment.
Why are they even interested in how much you earn in your current position?
Do you know your payslip is a confidential document you're not allowed to share without permission from your current employer?
