Nigeria still doesn't get it,health care isn't cheap.True each costs like 20,000 but prventive measures mean we should have more than enough for the first stages of an outbreak if it ever occurs,because that's the important stage,we shouldn't be hearing there are no more suits,manage or reuse suits,those in healthcare know what I mean.For the population of lagos let real preparations be made,not eye service papper arrangements/propaganda.

The protocol with such outbreaks usuusally is for the poplulace not to take the patients to the hospital but to call the designated centers nos to come pick infected pple in their protective suits,or if they must ,they could take the patients to such designated specially errected centres Ideally.

We don't need an outbreak to establish this protocols or preparations,with real places,people,and realistic figures,also to inform the public on all this.

My point is there is no shortcut to health expenditure,and the time to spend that money,to trully prepare is now.

1. Thank our stars Lagos state gov at least took immediate action,most that should hve been the effing Feds responsiblities at the point of entry.
2. Feds rarely budge unless theres a possibility of outbreak affect their kith and kin or their key loyalists.They dont care.

4.There are still many travellers with a possible contact coming in through land borders.I bet theres non functional body heat scanners at those port nor a functional mobile response unit.

YourHealthlabs: Reliable information reaching us from Uyo, capital city of Akwa Ibom State is that the Federal Government owned University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) has being plunged into entire darkness.

We gathered that the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Mr Peter Etete directed the CMAC to pass a circular round the hospital directing that the generating set which supply power to the wards and various clinical departments should not be switched on again, noting that they have not been generating revenue since Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) which the CMD and CMAC belongs to are on strike.

According to one of our source, the wards are always in darkness with the Nurses working there while patients on admission groan under the harsh condition. The Orthopedic unit where patients are lying helpless are the worst hit as they need ventilation to enable some of the pains they feel go away.

Findings reveal that the decision was carried out following a secret meeting held between the CMD and the few NMA members where it was agreed that the only way to make the strike effective was to render other workers and departments useless. The Physiotherapy department we authoritatively gathered has been working as if there is no strike, with all their patients coming for treatment, while the ones in the ward are also being treated. The circular which is now in effect will therefore cripple their activities as most of the machines used for treatment work with power.

UUTH has N4.675 Billion as her budget for 2014 with N22.294 million allocated for the procurement of a dedicated 100KVA generator which is yet to be bought.

xrazzy: I had similar problem at the maxillofacial surgery unit of ABUTH Zaria. I was having this recurrent toothache and I went to hospital. The doctors at the hospital diagnosed my problem as ingrowing wisdom tooth which have to be surgically remove. Since I was on NHIS as student of ABU, my HMO approved the surgery for me only to be told the maxillofacial surgeon that I have to pay for the rentage of drilling machine. I had no money that day so I returned back to the school clinic popularly called sickbay. On getting there I explained my predicament to the head dental surgeon and he told me that he would do the surgery without drilling machine if I could pay 1 thousand naira. After consulting my best friend in school then, I organized the money and entered for the surgery. To my astonishment, this doctor started using what resemble stainless plier and chisel on my tooth after he gave me one injection beneath the tooth.The pain was unbearable and it forced him to stop the surgery halfwAy... Adeyoyin Olatayo’s coming to Lagos again in January 2014 after many
years of visiting the city was neither for funfair nor tourism. Since
1967 when she clocked 15, she had been suffering from a severe pain
in her right hip, causing her great pain anytime she used the leg to
walk. Up till today, she said she could not explain what could have
caused the pain.
Since then, she had held many prayer vigils and taken uncountable
doses of drugs to suppress the pain. But it wouldn’t go. Instead, it got
worse by the day until eventually about two years ago, the two legs
finally failed to carry her anywhere again; and so she started using
crutches.
But she still hoped she would walk with her legs someday. With this
hope constantly burning in her, she learnt that she could be treated at
the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Igbobi, Lagos, one of the three
national orthopaedic hospitals in the country. And for the first time in
over 40 years of living with the hip pain, she heaved a sigh of relief –
that her ‘miracle’ might truly be in sight.
After many medical tests at the hospital, it was discovered that her
femur (the thigh bone located in the leg) had degenerated and worn
out, thereby making her right leg to become weak and heavy. But she
was still happy that at least, there was a solution in sight.
The solution would be a total hip replacement in the leg – a surgery
that could only be performed at a specialist hospital.
However, that feeling of happiness was almost marred when, five
months after she had gone to the hospital for registration and medical
tests, she was not called up for the surgery – the primary reason being
that the hospital wards were filled up, and so some patients had to
leave before others could be admitted.
Eventually she was operated on in May 2014, after some months of
waiting. Nonetheless, the total cost of the surgery almost made her to
give up – but for the financial support she received from her family
and friends, she finally had the surgery, and made it.
But one thing would not stop to baffle her, before and even after the
surgery had taken place. When she thought the payment of N787,200
stated by the hospital as the cost of the surgery would cover almost
every medical expense, she was nonplussed when she was asked to pay
N35,000 by one of the two doctors who handled her case for the rent
of an equipment called the surgical drilling machine, one of the tools
that would be used to operate on her in the theatre.
An orthopaedist, Adewale Oyediran, said the surgical drill is a medical
instrument that looks exactly like a drill, fitted with a rotating cutting
tool, and used in making holes in the bones.
Oyediran said the tool is used in performing many orthopaedic
surgeries, and is found in orthopaedic hospitals only.
He also explained that it is used only on patients whose bone had been
worn out or degenerated from its joint and needs to be fitted back
into it.
“It is a tool you don’t find in any other hospital. It is special and is
used only in orthopaedic surgeries. It is a bit expensive, with one
costing about N1m or more, depending on the type, he said.”
Even at that, Olatayo said she had never heard of cases where patients
were asked to pay to any doctor to rent any equipment that would be
used in the course of their treatment in any hospital – except probably
in private hospitals.
To confirm her thoughts that something was wrong somewhere, she
was not issued any receipt for the payment made to the doctor in
charge of the operation. Meanwhile, for every other service rendered
to her by the hospital, receipts were issued.
She said, “It was strange to me when the doctor told me I would pay
to rent one drill machine prior to the commencement of the operation
to be carried out on my leg. I had never heard of this anywhere before
that patients rent equipment to be used on them. The hospital should
have been the provider, I guess.”
To tell her this, she said the doctor had called her and her daughter
aside where no other hospital official could have heard their
conversation.
“But it was never stated in the cost statement issued to me when I paid
for the surgery, and I do not see it as normal that the equipment
would have to be paid for separately after paying a huge amount of
money for the operation already,” she added.
Olatayo also added that the doctor told her that she had a choice of
either buying the equipment brand new or renting it. Either way, the
most important thing is she needed it for a successful surgery on her
hip.
If she were to buy the surgical drill, the cost, according to the said
doctor, was over N1m. But since it would be unwise to spend such an
amount of money on one equipment that would be used only once,
she said the doctor advised her to rent it – at a cost of N35,000

The Northern Elders Forum on Thursday 17 July condemned the
registration of northerners living in some states in the sourthern part
of the country, noting that it is an affront on Nigerian citizens.
Dr Solomon Dalung , Spokesman of the forum, said this while
addressing newsmen after a meeting of the forum in Bauchi .
He described the exercise as a threat to national unity and an affront
on the constitution which provided rights to all citizens to live in any
part of the country.
“ We consider the registration of northerners living in some states in
the south as a very serious affront on the constitution that provided
rights for citizens to live everywhere peacefully .
“ Secondly, we consider it a threat to national unity . Profiling of
citizens World over has been responsible for most of the grave
atrocities and wars prosecuted by nations historical.
“ So, if we allow such to happen in the 21st century in a federation
like ours , we consider it very serious . We condemned it and we call
on the Federal Government to protect all citizens of the north living
in those areas.
“ And also called on those behind it to discontinue those act of affront
on Nigerian citizens .”
Dalung , who is also a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Jos,
said that the forum had concluded investigation into the illegal
detention of 486 northerners in Abia and would take legal action .
“ Even the issue of detention of northerners , we have concluded
investigations of what actually took place. The people have been
released , including the one they said was a kingpin of Boko Haram .
“ It is a typical Fulani man and with his traditional inscriptions on his
body , which even my grandmother has . Those inscriptions were what
they were referred to as marks of kingpin of Boko Haram , and they
arrest him.
“ Sadly, too , the Fulani cannot communicate very well in any language
except Fulani , and he was not aware of what they were saying and at
the end he has been released . All other persons have been released
and they are back.
“ What we are looking at now is to put up a legal team to go court so
that they can have their right of detention restored to them and paid
compensations as provided for by law because they were illegally
humiliated as citizens of Nigeria .”

Omooba77: Here are ten things I have identified as top abnormalities Nigerians now just surrender to or even accept as normal. As a matter of fact, they are essentially Nigerian in outlook and any attempt to change them might even affect our corporate image. They are as Nigerian as the green-white-green flag. Yet, there is nothing “normal” about them and a good, conscientious leadership can change them.
1.    Electricity: Gradually, Nigerians now have accepted that it is normal not to have or expect electricity. So when the Power Ministry under Professor Chinedu Nebo, recently announced a drop of 2000 megawatts from the existing 4000 megawatts, no Nigerian even commented. Also, when the power authorities speak of strikes, everyone looks away, uncaring.That is the new way. In my nick of the wood in Abuja, we even have a time table for light. There are off days as every part has its own “light day”. You plan your schedules in strict adherence to this time table. The other day, we had two days of uninterrupted power supply. My law-abiding neighbours became worried and collectively went to report the “anomaly” to NEPA (Nigerians still calls it that in spite of all the name change).

2.     Bad Roads: What you do about bad roads is not to complain. The skill you must get is how to navigate the craters and gutters in a way to save your tyres the ordeal. Since one big man spent a whopping 300 billion naira on roads without any visible change, Nigerians have resigned to fate, accepting their lot on the road of life (no pun intended).

3.    Electoral rigging: That elections are going to be rigged is not the issue. You knew it was going to happen as sure as the sun sets in the East. What you don’t know is the latest methods. Rigging are now even transparent, free and fair. You knew the poll was rigged but exactly how, you haven’t the faintest idea. At the end, you accept the result as the people’s wish. May be the new system is to allow the people do the rigging themselves. Self-reliant rigging!

4.     Corruption: Poor EFCC! They now pick every soft target they can find; quickly post their photos on the internet- just to keep the façade of waging a war against corruption. And they indeed are waging a war against petty thieves, leaving out the shot-callers and the well connected rogues who even run the anti-graft agencies.Yes, folks. The monster is waxing strong and many now only appease it with platitudes. This is the one that may never go away because it has become a duly registered conglomerate in its own right. What you do is try to see how much of it doesn’t affect you but it is everywhere you turn. Deal with it.

5.     Killer Convoys: You already know about that. What you don’t know is the madness of it all and why the big men choose to risk their lives and that of others in this manner. First, the convoys are a way of saying “look, we are different from you”. Then, it is the ultimate sign that you had arrived.I know a certain speaker (House of Assembly) who upon getting sworn in, called his aides aside and said “Please, ensure the sirens are the loudest in this state”. He wasn’t satisfied even with his aides’ reassurances. One day, he actually “supervised” the compliance by lowering his window to listen to the sweet sound of power. Only in Nigeria!

6.     Lack of cash: Welcome to the era of cashlessness. I laughed when I first heard of the CBN inspired cashless policy. If you asked me, Nigerians did not even notice the fact that the policy officially took off on July 1, 2014. Why? Nigerians have been living without cash since the start of the current dispensation. The skills we have learnt as a people is how to have enough cash to keep you alive till the next money enters your hand.How more cashless can an already listless, struggling people get? By the way, a certain supermarket I went the other day pretending to be operating the cashless stuff had difficulty with the machine. The batteries ran down and there was no light to power the damn device. The hapless customer just gave cash – good old cash – and left.

7.     Violence: The other day, Miss Malala came to town. A foreign news medium said she was risking her life by coming to Nigeria as if it was here she was first shot at.  But that is new reality! Our country is now in the same category as Somalia, Syria and the other demonised nations of the world.With thousands getting killed each week, Nigerians are now insensitive. An editor told me the other day that he was tired of all the stories of killings and abduction going on in Borno State. And he wasn’t being callous. He was merely accepting the new norm – the fact that a bomb blast now sounds like the knockouts we like throwing around at xmas when we were innocent.

8.     Defection: Politicians now move around the political parties like some girls looking for where to shop for the latest Brazillian hair. There was a time when to defect from a party was the ultimate decision by a politician. It would make headlines. But now, you just yawn when you hear of it.

9.     Strikes: Strikes have become a comedy out here. In some climes, strikes are the biggest of crisis. But now, unions just get together to have fun – threatening and then backtracking! Industrial actions don’t have any value anymore. They are actions without a corresponding action from the authority that has learnt that after a while, the strikers would get tired and seek any kind of settlement.Let’s strike out the strikes, please!

10.    Skewed court judgments: No one even expect justice from the courts anymore. You only went there because you were either dragged there against your wish or that you went because you didn’t know where else to turn to.  At the end, you are disappointed by the quality of justice dispensed, even if it was in your favour.
