WEMA FY 2007 - PAT N2.55b; EPS 0.25k FY 2006 - LAT N6.6b Very disappointing results!!!
It sure is! Was the FY 2006 PAT = N6.6B? If so then we know the much-talked-about goodwill is responsible for the bank's declining fortunes. I'd like to see the 2007 interim results b4 I pass final judgment. |

Naijadr:Yes it's N10. See Proshare. |
motai:I'm buying Insurance companies esp Crusader. I'll also recommend M Benefits and Law Union & rock. |
shigidi:You must be a mind reader ![]() The discount is a reward for faithful shareholders not us bargain-hunters. Let's see the prospectus but I suspect I may be forced to eat crow and buy this PO for a change. ![]() |
dollarmani: pumping777:I Concur! I signed up and I really like the layout. V professional (well almost; they need to format the numbers better. Can't read ten digits without commas or spaces) but I hope they improve |
Exchange-traded Funds are coming to the NSE. http://proshareng.com/myproshare/portal_news.php?id=3057 They are also likely to cut transaction costs. |
pangolo:Dr? I no read book reach that one! Transcorp will deliver a loss in the current fiscal year. They plan to deliver a profit of ~25k per share for the 2008 fiscal year. It has the potential to make it's shareholders v rich but my plan is to wait for my other investments to "mature" before I buy some Transcorp. Maybe mid next yr. |
shigidi:You are spot on and I did buy some upon wanaj0's recommendation. Sold it after it went on a run and it has since stabilized. The forward EPS is 1.4 but I dunno what PE the market will place on a BETA glass but 20 may be optimistic. The only downside is they made a lot less in the 2nd half of last year than in the 1st, what if that trend continues? Maybe 1.4 becomes 1.2 |
Another O.G.?? I'm not watching again. I wanted a game not a massacre. |
Rooney hit the bar. Pretty sure he'll get the 'trick unless he gets substituted |
Penalty for Manchester United! Wayne Rooney steps up for the hat-trick. Saved! ![]() |
shigidi:Work dey. Heroes is on episode 3 (or 4) am I'm luving it! Crusader acquired 5 companies and wanaj covered them a few days ago but you can find the list on the SEC website under the mergers section. Those mergers (but one) were all consummated in over 8 months ago and no shares seem to have made it on the NSE. I think someone may have mentioned the new companies were paid for using warehoused shares (not sure how that works). Our calculations are somewhat inconclusive but I will be SHOCKED if they list up to 1B additional shares. and I don't think an addtional B shares will be a major game-changer. If more? ? ? Anyway, we'll get the audited results in ~6 months and all will be clear. If it drops on Monday, I buying more. |
When you buy a public offer (PO), you have to wait a significant amount of time to recieve your certificate. This means you have to wait 3-12 months before you can sell the shares you bought. (Shares bought on the floor can be resold in 3-5 days) The benefit is that POs are offered at a discount to the current floor price hence you make more when you sell. POs are a lot more profitable as long as you are willing to wait a while to receieve and register your certificates. |
aquita:I joined this forum 5+ months ago. In that time frame, I have offered advice on the need for/how to calculate simple ratios to evaluate the relative value of stocks. Wanaj0, Frank, Temmie, Wendy and others have done the same. I know it's a long thread now , but there is a lot of good stuff and links to even better stuff buried in this thread. I'd love to go over it all again but I have a full-time job. Tell you what, go to stock market nigeria and sign up for that forum as well. You'll geta free e-book that summarizes fundamentals. Investopedia.com is a also a good resource. Now I look for gist and gurus' opinions on specific stocks. ![]() |

rasputinn:It is advisable to buy insurance companies now because they are down ~30-50% from the highs in June. They may drop further, they may not but it's a good time to buy. UBA is very impressive and should deliver N23B in profits. But with shares now totalling 11.5B following the PO, N2 EPS is too small for a stock selling at N53. I'd pass on UBA for now. DO NOT invest for 4 months. Stocks are designed to deliver superior returns in the LONG-TERM and not 4 months. Think of it as a long-term savings account and not a trading opportunity. |
whitelexi:LOL! V funny. :DMy head was spinning reading all the stuff posted above. |
shigidi:Fidelity is being offered at a forward PE of 16 so the difference is small but at least we have FCMB's impressive 1Q results to give us more confidence in the forecast. Still these mid-tier banks have some ambitious forecasts. |
wanaj0:To think NEM actually reached 6 bucks! I wouldn't rate it a buy unless it drops below N1.50. Regarding how they go from here, I'd bet Crusader, Law Union & Rock (maybe M Benefits) will do 80-100% in the next 12 months. But it seems Ins companies are also gearing up for another round of POs/rights in 2008. |
CBANJ:HUGE FAN. Best show on TV.
Thought GTB half year result is due? Should we expect it this month? Is Bank PHB pursuing GTB? What with their first quarter results of N3.5b, N3.5b? Many things are happening
GTB is usually good about releasing within 6 weeks of the close of any quarter. Should be any day now. But the GDR propsectus did not contain any enticing forecasts. Speaking of forecasts, anyone have the FCMB prospectus yet. Googled it to no avail yesterday. |
All, hope you saw Law Union & rock's 9 mos results. 537M over 9 months. With 3.437B shares, that's an annualized EPS of 21k. Not bad for a N3 stock. Hope other insurance companies will release similar results. |
shigidi:Hmmm. Maybe Stanbic brings more to the table than we realize. If the addition of Stanbic enables IBTC to double earnings, it's well worth 20 bucks. Only time will tell. Not a chance I'm willing to take. |
Gentlemen: WanajO, easimoni, and Co All that you guys have said about BONUS are very, very correct. Why, though, I said AIICO is generous is because even when they were gradually returning to profitability, in their last year rewards, they also gave 1 for 6 bonus. So in good and bad times, they give what majority of Nigerian investors prefer - BONUS.
I get it, I just wonder why anyone hangs on to a company losing money just because of a bonus. I know they do it (and that we can benefit from such market sentiments) but I think people will ultimately start to see the light as the market gets more sophisticated (and it will). |
Temmie10:Personally, If any company I own declares a bonus, I watch it rally for a few days and then issue a DUMP (not SELL) order! I can't stand to wait around for my shares to show up (have a colleague waiting for a Conoil bonus from 3 yrs ago) or to see the fundamentals get bungled by the host of innumerate (mathematically illiterate) analysts who won't (or can't?) factor new shares into the EPS/PE calcs. I always get chastised for the attitude but I believe bonuses are simply a distraction. I hope ALL the companies I own give a bonus at the FY so I can watch the rally and then DUMP them. |
@ Wanaj0, give us the gist on First Aluminium. Saw on the other forum that you might take a position. Are you expecting a turn-around v soon? |
pumping777:Nice theory. I think I buy it. I also believe we are seeing how deep the market really is. All the funds the banks have raised this year have depressed the sec market in the 2nd half and continue to do so with PO after PO after PO. I was high on Access (still am). A little disappointed I couldn't turn it around for a profit quickly but if it drops anymore, I getting some more. It's the cheapest bank on a forward PE basis (assuming the PO is not heavily oversubscribed); the only one with a forward PE under 20 (incl. PO shares) and has a PEG of 0.15 |
hI WanajO, With all due respect, if AIICO was giving BONUSES when they were not doing well profitably, it confirms my statement that they are GENEROUS. Unless you are saying the word GENEROUS has suddenly changed in meaning. If they were doing well and were giving bonus that would be a different thing. Here they were not doing well, according to you, and yet they were giving their shareholders bonuses. Are you saying if they return to profitability, they will withdraw those bonuses? I don't think so, hence I MAINTAIN that AIICO is GENEROUS. Regards
It's the word "bonus" that has changed in meaning. Bonus means something extra for free but in the NSE a bonus means taking my cake, cutting it into smaller pieces and telling me the same cake should be sweeter because I now have 12 slices instead of 6. Reminds me of the Yogi Berra story: A waitress asks Yogi if he wants his pizza cut into 8 slices and he answers "I don't think I can eat 8 slices, why don't you cut it into six". The same pizza! The point is AIICO gave bonuses to distract you from the fact that they were not profitable. Bonuses don't mean anything, they never have and never will. I'd never buy a money-losing company even if they were giving 100-for-1 |
shigidi:The results were very impressive and I'd def rate it a buy. Caveat is they also seem to make the bulk of their profits in the 2nd half of the year which makes things less predictable. I'm looking to get some myself, do you have any other info outside the fundamentals? |
wanaj0:MD said they raised N175B , which is ~10.6B shares @ 16.50ea. Not yet official. |
N176M was for 6 months! not just the 2nd Q! The EPS is 22k! |

its gone past the 16naira tender offer. despite its modest fundamentals.
