Obasanjo's shame: 13 States including entire Eastern Nigeria in darkness as power cut is expected to last two weeks[/size]

The Nigerian Electricity Power Authority (Nepa) says 13 states, including the entire eastern part of the country, may be without electricity for two weeks after what it calls an attack by vandals on a vital transmission line.

Tens of millions of people in eastern Nigeria have been without electricity since Monday night.

Nigeria's Government has struggled to improve the country's notoriously inefficient electricity network since coming to power two years ago.

Nigerians are well accustomed to power cuts but rarely on such a devastating scale.

The huge area affected by this latest blackout includes some of Nigeria's largest and economically most important cities.

Struggling industries and public services, as well as private households, are already experiencing enormous inconvenience and discomfort.

Sabotage

A Nepa official told the BBC that a tower on a vital power line serving the east had been attacked by vandals and that it may take two weeks to repair.

Power lines in Nigeria are often sabotaged by gangs working for scrap metal traders, although in this instance one Nepa official is quoted as saying that no pieces had been removed from the damaged tower.
Last year an angry President Olusegun Obasanjo took direct charge of Nepa, accusing it of notorious and endemic corruption.

President Obasanjo has pledged to to increase output to a constant 4,000 megawatts by the end of this year.

But even if Nigeria attains this target, it will be producing one-tenth as much electricity as South Africa, with about three times the population.

This is why I keep saying that the quality of Nigerians on NL give a lot of cause for concern. How can you say OBJ should be shamed for a power outage in 2001 when he came in in 1999? Do you mean that the rot in the power sector that led to that kind of situation was between 1999 and 2001? do you even know what it takes to provide power to a nation? The only major power projects that was done in Nigeria were done during Gowon and OBJ's regime in the 70s. From Shagari to Buhari to IBB to Abacha, nothing was done, The system detoriorated for around 20 years. And you say OBJ should be shamed for it in 2001. You are biased but what is worse is the way you show it. You should try and be more diplomatic and dont give yourself up too easily

@edicolove,

All that I mentioned are a matter of public record

check  out the link at the bottom

No petroleum minister - so he had full control of Oil Revenue - over $150 billion unaccounted for

Library project? - Has a Library in his name which cost billions of Naira

Ota farm - He admitted his farm was earning approx N10billion Naira every month within months of taking office angry

16billion for darkness - budgetted $16 billion or N4 trillion with nothing to show for it. He looted the money

Bola Ige, Dikibo were murdered?

Zaki biam and odi mass massacre -  entire villages massacred - thousands of innocent people massacred by his orders.

Introduced a constitution which allowed many states to adopt Sharia Law which in turn led to over 10,000 deaths from religous violence.

Introduce a consitution which gave public official immunity from prosecution whilst they are in office looting.

Abolished the Petroleum Trust Fund wich was set up by Abacha to improve Infrastructure.

Improverished Nigerians  by devaluing the Naira 500%   (yes - five hundred percent!  angry )

Mismanaged and looted Nigeria Airways causing it to collapse.

Privatised  (sold off)  many state industries and has not account for trillions of Naira from these  proceeds

He gave away our Nigerian  land - Bakassi

He  hiked fuel prices  approx 500% and deceived Nigerians by calling the price hike subsidy removal - when fuel was never subsidised

Presided during the total collapse of our power network with the entire Eastern region in darkness for several days

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-693700.320.html

All you said is not in any public record. It is beer parlour talk and accusations by those who dont like him. Not of it has any substance. If it had, men like Atiku or Buhari who hate him to the bones or IBB would have use that to try to send him to jail. They are just beer parlour talk and mostly exagrated stuff. For example how can someone take you serious when you say something like

"Presided during the total collapse of our power network with the entire Eastern region in darkness for several days". Did he form a committe to see to it that the power network collasped or what are you talking about. Sounds sooooo unintelligent.  or you also said

"He  hiked fuel prices  approx 500% and deceived Nigerians by calling the price hike subsidy removal - when fuel was never subsidised". Do you think a president just sits in his house and presides over fixing of prices? Anoher unintelligent post. Prices are arrived at by many indicators. Some of these indicators, the president cannot even understand fully. He has to rely on the experts to interpret them for him. Thats why you have men like Greenspan and Rupert Murdock  in the US advising Obama. Thats why there is an Iweala there to advise GEJ. Many of you who have never worked in government circles think this is just about politicians.  you also said

"He gave away our Nigerian  land - Bakassi" Gave away Bakkasi? Do you even know the whole story? I guess not!

"Mismanaged and looted Nigeria Airways causing it to collapse." Another beer parlour talk

"Abolished the Petroleum Trust Fund wich was set up by Abacha to improve Infrastructure." This one hardly deserves a reply. FTF was at best a military scam I am from delta and i cna bet 100, 000 naira with you if you can show me one benefit of PTF to delta state. PTF was an open scam

"Zaki biam and odi mass massacre -  entire villages massacred - thousands of innocent people massacred by his orders." Honesstly I dont know why I am replying these. They are simply stu.pid. Most of you just type anything you like without much intelligence in it. You dont just kill 9 army officers and expect the military to thank you for it. And where did you get that a whole village was massacared. Anytime the military or police or anyone visits a village, the villagers are normally gone like 1 hour before they arrive. The only people that get caught in the crossfire are the old who cannot move. You think young people sit in their houses and wait for soldiers to come and kill them.

I think I am wasting my time doing this, really

Even if you do not like the man, try not to show your bias too much. It is too glaring. All these things you have listed are childish talk and beer parlour talk. It doesnt even need reply. Try and be more intelligent when you post.
CelebritiesRe: Breaking News: Baba Suwe Released From Ndlea; No Drugs Found! by edicolove: 12:07am On Nov 05, 2011
The problem with NL is that a lot of people come here trying to claim modern knowledge or something like that. and they are just ignorant folks thinking they know anything. I cant say Baba Suwe is guilty because there is apparantly no evidence to show that, but to say Juju is not real just because you live in Europe is very very stup.id. Even in Europe, magic exists. Very dark magic. Many of us grew up to experience different kinds of supernatural things around us. That you dont believe it doesnt make it a lie. You are free to believe anything you like as a man.

There is juju for many things in Naija and it is very real. Whether BabaSuwe used it to escape is another matter entirely. also, it is common knowledge that many actors and music artists are drug peddlers. Many have already been caught in the past. So you cannot blmae people for believing he could be guilty. I am glad for him since he hasnt been proved guilty.

Lastly, He cannot sue for anything. The NDLEA act allows for detention for a period longer than 24 hours and the NDLEA has simply followed the act and when the act could not hold again, they sought a judges order and got it. On the case for defamation, there is no case there as the NDLEA never came out officially to accuse Baba Suwe of carrying drugs. Most of the statements the press published throughout this saga were not NDLEA official statement. In fact, the official statement they issued actually stated that they didnt tell anyone they arrested him for drugs. You cannot use a presentation in court as defamation. I do feel sorry for him though but I think he suffered this public humiliation because he is a celebrity. If he wasnt a celebrity, there wont have been all this media circus.
BusinessRe: Do 80% Of Nigerians Truly Live On Less Than $2? by edicolove: 9:30pm On Nov 02, 2011
One other point some here have seem to miss is that the term porverty is a relative term. It has little to do with figures most times but more to do with the environment you live in. A banker can be a poor man. The last banking crisis did show that. Many of those bankers where almost back on the streets immediately they got laid off.

And just to add that the guy who said China had a lot of middle class doesnt have a clue. China is still one of the poorest countries in the world as far as GDP is concerned. In China, there are about 11 very developed cities. After that, the rest of the country is deep in porverty. I mean the kind of porverty that Nigerians cannot even condone.
BusinessRe: Do 80% Of Nigerians Truly Live On Less Than $2? by edicolove: 9:22pm On Nov 02, 2011
Like many have said, the argument is not that Nigerians are not poor. Many Nigerians are poor just like you will find in other places in the world. Many Nigerians are suffering. I have have found myself in the middle of nowhere before with no money to even transport myself home. But the story of $2 a day is not correct. It is just people trying to be politically correct and using it to collect money from foreign donors. Nigeria is a gold mine. There are many Nigerians in the UK and Spain that beg on the streets. Many work in farms doing hard labour. I will never stay in europe because Nigeria is a land of opportunities. You cannot get the kind of opportunities in Nigeria anywhere else. An indian once talked with my friend and I and kept wondering why we travel abroad. He kept repeating that Nigeria was a gold mine.

Tell me which country in the world where you make money and pay crumbs as tax. I mean crumbs. Nigeria is the only place I know where you can make 800% profit on a business and smile to the bank. Whether it is private sector or government. anywhere you find a large population is always a gold mine. All the amenities people complain about is actually an opportunity for many people. The pure water business is an example of a business that started as a solution to a nagging problem. I am not saying it is easy but sometimes, it is important how you see problems. One mans problem is another man's opportunity
BusinessRe: Do 80% Of Nigerians Truly Live On Less Than $2? by edicolove: 8:20pm On Nov 02, 2011
Some of you guys keep showing why Nigerians have a high failure rate. Nobody said many Nigerians are not poor. The @op was very specific. 80% of Nigerians dont live on $2 a day. I have lived in PH, Benin, Warri, Aba and temporarily stayed in Benue, Akwa Ibom, Kano and visited many other places. 80% does not live on $2 a day. I dont know where you guys got that from. Please tell which category of workers live on $2 a day? A lot of people are suffering. That I have Internet connection and posting here doesnt mean I havent suffered before. I went thru the iniversity for 6 years so I know first hand how hard it is. But even as a student, i was able to work and go to school and make far more than that. You people just come to NL and post things you have no clue of. No one can survive on $2 a day in most cities in Nigeria. They will die in less than 3 months. You guys just like to sound like dooms day prophets. From Ikeja to surulere is minimum N150 and you say 80% live on $2 a day. Its funny how you say it like you have any statistics. There is no statistics in Nigeria. There is no proper database anywhere. Everything is speculation. So please dont post wrong information.

Taiw:
i served in d north ,i can tell u categorically dat majority dont even earn up to half of N300 n dey still survive.ask God.pple go to restaurants, parties hotels to beg 4 leftovers dat dey used in feedin deir families.one idiotic nl said pple re poor n yet dey still ave fones.any smart person can ave a fone.sumone i knew bought a fone 4 N200 even in computer village,u can get used fones 4 dat amount, sum even steal it.will u nw say dey re nt poor cos dey still ave fones?wat bout pple dat pick d clothes dey wear frm dustbins, even go frm house 2 house begging 4 used clothes.pple actually live below dat amount.i wud rather choose 2 b poor in uk than in naija.atleast i noe i'll enjoy light, roads and govt. benefits.i tink d statics of 80percent is justified if u luk around u well
You certainly live in the Uk and have no clue. About the north, you are right to some extent, because of the high rate of almajiris. But in the south, you are soooo wrong. There are a lot of people suffering but not 80%. Phones do not sell for N200 in computer village. Not even stolen phones. You can get like N1200 for the lowest level nokia phones. It is very true that many Nigerians can afford a phone and therefore do not fall into the category that live on $2. On top of that, just go to the beer parlours around very poor areas like Musihn and Ajegunle and see the so called poor people drinking bottles of beer. A bottle of beer costs around N130. The truth is that suffering is a relative term. A man earning 100k a month can still be said to be suffering.
BusinessRe: Do 80% Of Nigerians Truly Live On Less Than $2? by edicolove: 6:13pm On Nov 02, 2011
The poster is ssssssssssssssssooooooooooooo on point. Now there are a lot of people suffering in Nigeria, but is isnt different from other parts of the world including developed countries. I have travelled several countries so I know first hand. 80% of Nigerians dont live on $2 a day. It is such a faceless lie. It is a scheme that many government agencies and NGOs have used to collect monies from Oyibo. $2 is what many Nigerians spend a meal including people living in Mushin and Ajegunle. Now there are many who are really suffering I must repeat, but that is certainly not 80%. Not even 60%. Another thing is that you also have to look at it from different demographies. The almajiris are obviously in that category but the man living in Mushin or agege is not. The man living in the village is not. Someone mentioned that people in the village eat fruits as meals. You certainly have lived too much in Europe and watch too much Tarzan. The villagers in most parts of Nigerians might not be "rich". But many of them can take care of their basic needs and do live well. They eat far better than people in the cities. That is why they live longer and stronger. An average 80 year old man in the village is usually stronger than an average 70 year old in the city. Bus conductors go home with between 1500 to 2000 daily in Lagos. I cant say for the rest of the country for now. An average okada man in Lagos makes between 2000 and 5000 daily, depending on how hard working they are.

Just to add that the 2 class of persons that are actually suffering much in Nigeria are government workers and young jobless graduates. Most artisans are faily ok. They might not be "rich" but are ok. Many vulcanisers and Mechanics I know have houses in the village or outskirts of Lagos. If you visit their homes, you will be shocked. They live wella. They drink several bottles of beer daily. A vulcaniser for example collects N300 to fix a bad tire and you say he lives on $2 a day. That is just one tire and he can fix up 15 in a very good day. The guy that sells me DVDs and CDs has a better generator than me and has a double door fridge-freezer and uses a DSTV phone. He makes N130 per DVD because he buys at N70 from Alaba and sells to me at N200. I could go on and on. I know 2 people in computer village that repair phones that go home with as much as N10, 000 some days. One has a house in Ikorodu. Even on bad days, he still makes as much as N4000. If you doubt what I am saying, goo to computer village yourslef and find out. If you convince them, they will open up to you.

Like I said earlier, those really suffering are the young school graduates because they cannot do "dirty" work because of their status. They are always moving around with CVs. I am not saying it is easy but there is a lot to do in NIgeria that can keep you busy and fairly ok. I have suffered so I am not saying this from a priviledged position. I have seen whiiin, before so I know how it is.

@Gbawe

You have done everything except:
1. Explain why workers have not been paid.
2. Explain how Aregbesola spent the 100billion
3. Explain how Aregbesola is ruling Osun state.

Can you stay on topic please? Honestly, if this is the way you defend rubbish, you have nothing to say about PDP. You should remove the log in your eye first before attaempting to accuse another person. How can you answer every accusation against an ACN governor with "PDP did this and PDP did that". It is soooo pathetic!

I feel sorry for all of you defending this guy. You want to play hard ball with the president of Nigeria and your state contributes nothing to the federation and you are already bankrupt? This is the dumbest move I have ever seen. If this guy was a manager in my company, he would be fired immediately because he sure is going to run the company down. In this case, he will run the state down. Now there is a ban on foreign loans. Let us see how he will survive. We are watching,
