This is going around on BBM. Can anyone please confirm? EMMERGENCY if you have any of your family or friends coming to unilag tell them to stay back cos there is α̲̅ serious fight at D̶̲̥̅̊ unilag gate between the police and students α̲̅ police man has shot one of our student. Please r\bc |
alj harem: you are only deceiving yourself and your gullible followersYou are really begining to sound so desperate now. You now officially have a GEJ phobia. At the end of his tenure when a lot of groundwork have materialized, you might have to relocate out of Naija out of unbearable shame. Watch it man so you don't commit suicide. This is getting worrisome, really. |
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! This is soooo hilarious! But really, why are SW peeps like this? So hypocritical Hear them "it was noble but not legal". "We are fighting the the legality, not Abiola". How can you separate the fighting of the legality from the fighting of Abiola? How can you explain to someone out there watching yesterday that you were fighting ilegality? They saw you protesting against attaching Abiola'a name to UNILAG. Simple as that. You didn't believe that Abiola was worth it, simple. If it was ilegality that was the issue, you won't have shown so much anger and disdane as to block the 3rd mainland bridge. You protest would have been more proffesional, not a riot. A riot is total rejection and only comfirms what Al Mustafa said that Abiola's people sold him out and collected change! Never give your life for this country. It isn't worth it. |
Demdem: Uncomfortable with the jargons u spew constantly,Me? Go thru your posts? Lol! Nah! I aint that jobless. And for your alma mater, it doesn't matter. Even your use of English speaks volumes. Typical under-bridge boy. That what's you are. And ypu definitely know nothing of June 12 or Abiola because you were obviously still running around with your spiderman underwear then with a constantly running nose as a trademark! |
nateevs: This has nothing to do with region, hero and what not but to do with 'brand and history'.I like the way you have articulated ur argument but I need serious answers here: Are you telling me that the students who went on the street yesterday were there because they had all this intellectual analysis and dissections in their head? Do you think the Brits will go on the streets if Oxford or Cambridge is changed to Wiston Churchhill? Do you really think majority of Nigerians care about the MAU name change? Do you know the reactions have completely rubbished the June 12 legacy? Do you know only Nigerians place premium in emptiness like these? Do you know how many countries, cities and universities have changed names all around the world since the last 1000 years and still happening? I need answers please. |
Demdem: My friend u talk too much. there is a thread for this already so if u are interested, leave this thread and go thereI know someone like you will be uncomfortable with my post because you are a typical example of an akoka yahoo boy who places more value on name tags than the principles of democracy, justice and freedom. I won't be suprised if your jeans is sagging right now as you post! Lol |

I have never seen this level of celebration of emptiness, vanity and nothingness before in my life. I am still in shock. This is a total reality check of what we have become as a nation. A people of vanity. How can students go on the street and highways to reject in totality the only real symbol of democracy we have in Nigeria? And hear them: "the name has no swag". "The name is a brand". Countries have changed names. Cities, both ancient and modern, have changed names. What is in a common University that would warrant the desecration of our only symbol of democracy. But alas! This is Nigeria. A people that celebrate emptiness. Only in Nigeria you hear people addressed as engineer or architect or deacon so and so. I used to join the band wagon that say our older generation are our problem but now I see a young generation that is set to redefine absurdity. They k ow nothing but the fake life. Just to ask, where have you ever heard that the students of a university are consulted in the naming of the University? They are just students sent there by their parents to read their book. But they are obviously not interested in reading, only interested in yahoo activities. I thought I would wake up this morning to hear people dissect and shred GEJ's speech to bits and give him serious posers why we haven't seen some crucial progress in governance. Why we haven't seen good signs of much needed infrastructure. But the yahoo boys didn't disappoint. The renaming of UNILAG to MAU is now the headlines. They have effectively given GEJ a very soft landing. On the other hand, they have wiped out in less than 24hrs a very important democratic milestone. June 12 is just 2 weeks away and I look forward to seeing how these bunch will come back to tell the rest of Nigeria to celebrate the man whom they have just spat on his grave. |
Kobojunkie: Tears of joy welling up . . . matter of fact, choking me sef!!It is nothing new really. The SW has always been known to betray even their own for a morsel of gbegiri. See how they have rubbished Abiola and June 12 for ever. The legacy wiped out in just 24 hours. What they do not realise however is that they are the real loosers here. Mark this day in history because we will make reference to it. Simple question to live you lot with. If the fight was about democracy not Abiola, why did the rest of Nigeria conceed the presidency to the SW in 1999? If it wasnt about Abiola, it wouldn't have mattered that a SW person must lead then, would it? Abiola was the biggest leverage and bargain chip the SW had. Something even the then powerful north did not have an answer for. Now, they are laughing at you lot because you have thrown away a big leverage. The weight has finally been lifted from off their back. This is what you get when you give 1diots a computer and Internet connection |
^^^ So who did the FG consult before naming it UNILAG in the first place? Is that the book your parents sent you there to go and study? Oh, I forgot. They are yahoo boys and prostitute girls. They bribe lecturers to pass and graduate. Pathetic! Nigeria youths have become so dumb, I weep for the upcoming generation. Where have you ever heard the owner of a University has to consult the students before they change the name. It is so ridiculous how this lot think. They have a warped sense of self importance and revel in vanity and emptiness. They are worse than the older generation that they castigate. They will rather have a nice sounding name than identify with the ideologies of democracy, justice and freedom! Sums it up for Nigeria! |
Please, are Nigerian youths living in Lagos this daft? Hear their comments: "The move is a political move". "It is in bad taste". "He should have named something else". "He didn't make consultations". "UNILAG is a big brand, 50 years old". Gosh! They can't even understand the implication of their comments. Ok let me help their peanut brains. What you are saying is: 1. Abiola and what he stands for is too small for such an honor. 2. They should have consulted us and of course we would have said no because the name UNILAG is more important than MKO and June 12 legacy. 3. We do not care about Abiola or June 12 4. We have a poor value system that celebrates emptiness and the fake life not democracy and freedoms. 5. We entered UNILAG because of how the name sounds, not because of what we intend to benefit academically Countries and world cities have changed names from generation to generation. What is so special about a common university that no one cares about. And where have you ever heard that the government/owners need to ask the students of a university what they think before changing the name? Is that the book they went there to read? Gosh! The other states of Nigeria are just laughing at these stup1d 1diots! They have just spat on Abiola's grave with such impunity that the guy will be turning right now. The lesson is well learnt, never ever fight for Nigerians or lay down your life for them. They will sell you out for a bowl of ewa agoin! |
seanet02: Bloody pdp lawyers. God bless Justice Ayo Isa Salami, the honest judge and icon of truth.Honest judge? Is that a joke? The same judge that was calling ACN leaders? Very funny! |
Again, the joke is on ya'll. You call someone daft, yet he keeps outwitting you and coming out tops everytime. He has dispelled every discent and keeps forging on and you still think you are smarter. The smart MAU students will go home, stay for six montha and come back and answer the name. In any conflict, the first law of engagement is "never underestimate your foe". You lot keep breaking this rule to your own peril. You keep underestimating GEJ and calling him names. Yet he keeps threading paths his predecessors avoided like a plague: electoral reform, FOI bill, official secrets act, fuel subsidy removal, PHCN privatisation and now MAU. Yet you keep saying he is daft. It reminds me of the story of the Chicken and the Duck. The mother hawk sent her children to get food. They caught a little duckling and brought it back to mother hawk. Mother hawk asked them, "what did the mother duck say?" They said, "she said nothing". So mother hawk asked them to return the duckling. Then they went and caught a little chick and brought her to mother hawk. Mother asked again, "what did the mother chicken say?" They said, "she was shouting and swearing and cursing". So she said "good. Let's eat. The mother chicken has done her worst". The lesson of the story! Continue to call GEJ daft to your peril! Fingers crossed! |
dayokanu: Exactly!!!!,Idio.ts with IQ of -21 and GPA of 1.2 running around NL calling others daft. The joke is on you. How old were you in 1993? Ode! We fought for democracy not Abiola abi? Adamu! Where have you seen a struggle without a man triggering it? You think we would have come out if it was Shonekan? We were on campus back then and we came out because we believed in Abiola first then democracy next. You come here to post shyte when you were still running around in a creche then wearing superman pants and sucking feeding bottle. Ode! |
alj harem: Chai Igbos are having a fill dayWhy won't they? Can you blame them? Yorubas have thrown their own under the bus here and they aint doing themselves any favors here. This is not OBJ we are talking about. This is MKO. This issue was so sensitive, the whole country completely conceeded the presidency to them in 1999. Now they have just come out to say it was all meaningless. What a slap. What a statement. What a whole new meaning this gives to Nigeria. Some people don't realise the political implication of what just happened. It will shock you to know how this will divide the SW in 2015. Fingers crossed! |
4evergod3: @Deedee49Hahahahahaha! Another stup1d dolt yahoo boy from akoka thinking he is Spiderman or incredible hulk because he can insult someone's mum! Lol. Is that your idea of what it takes to be a man? Lol. Nice try. Grow a brain man. I am ashamed for you. Men don't talk like that. That kind of talk is for women who watch African magic Be a man boy. Upgrade ur skull. Lol. Adamu 4evergod3: @Deedee49! |
Sweetlemon: To me, the annoying thing here is not actually the renaming in itself. It is the annoying way the govt keeps chasing after rats when its house is raging with fire! It's just soooooooo annoying watching their show of misplaced priorites all the time. With this, I think the students have every right to protest cos apart from the fact that Unilag is already an established name, they should be angry that the only thing the govt can think of doing for them (admist all the problems dying for attention in their school) is changing the name of their university! If I were them, I would also feel insulted |
stagger: I hope our president can see the effects of pronouncements that are not thought through.Of course, yes! He can see clearly now. And so can the rest of us. We can all see that the south west don't like or respect Abiola and the students of MAU are yahoo boys and girls with a vague sense of value and no brains. They aren't there to read and get a degree. They are there to have fun and take hard drugs! |
Kobojunkie: Typical Nigerian .. . attack the messenger and not the message.See you running from pillar to post trying to defend the indefensible after you s.hi.t for church use bible clean yans.h! I have already bookmarked this page. Ridiculing the name of Abiola like you are a saint. Like all the freedom fighters the world has ever seen were saints. Trying to explain away Abiola'a role in June 12. Hear yourself "Note that the election was not free and fair because of Abiola, but because Nigerians decided to make a decision for themselves on that day. " So who or what inspired them to make that decision? Your primary 3 teacher will not be proud of you at all. You have let him/her down with your IQ of -21. Have you ever seen a struggle that didn't have someone as a symbol? You think Nigerians would have taking that election serious and turned out en masse if it was Umaro Dikko or Shonekan that contested? You are not doing yourself any favours here. Grow up. It is very foolish to attack MKO in Nigeria even if you don't like him. |
RoadStar: So you've answered the question, no one really loves MKO ...God bless you sir! You have made my day. The Kobojunkies of this world are double speaks. They are a new breed of hypocrites. They have laid their hearts bare today for the whole nation to see. Mustafa is laughing in his prison cell and saying, I told them so. And they think the other geo politico zones will take them seriously after this. A kingsdom divided against itself. The Abiolas have already released a statement and you have to really weep for them. Kola himself said it that his father died for nothing. And hear Kobojunkie's argument; he said June 12 has nothing to do with Abiola. Can you imagine that level of idiocy! It is alarming. Like saying Mandela has nothing to do with south African independence. I am beginning to think this kobo guy is less than 20 yrs old. A real dolt! He even compared Abiola to Orji Uzor Kalu. What an irredeemable idioti.c Arrow! I am just waiting to hear Al Mustafa's comment. Gonna be interesting. |
I am really enjoying this whole saga and it has far reaching implications for South West in particular and Nigeria in general. The south west has just been laid bare today. Al Mustafa said it and they said he was wrong. He said Abiola was betrayed by his people and they said he was mad. He is smiling big in his prison cell right now. Fully justified. The south west has just created a massive divide today and the rest of us are watching. I was at the newspaper stand to buy the morning paper and several Yoruba peeps were really livid. One man kept shouting that he is an Alumni of UNILAG and that Abiola fully deserved it and the protests and criticism was a total disgrace and betrayal to Abiola by the south west. I am waiting for South West to come out in 2 weeks time and tell us we should all celebrate June 12. It will be very funny indeed. |
@breezybone Nd all others who think the name is nothing but a name.... If you attend a school with a great brand, you'll know the psycological effects of the boast in moral u get from such great names...... I pride ma self as an ABUsite alumni, why take the joy of being an akokite into being a Maluite/moshoodite or whatever.... Dull move by a dull president who attended a dull school nd was voted in by dullards.......shikenan
All hail the intelligent one! Howz that ur GPA coming on? I only have a few questions for you. If you fail them, extra year straight! 1: Was there due process when the school was named UNILAG? Was it not a decision by the FG? So why should they contact you or call a national conference to rename it? 2. Is the school now too big and classy to bear Abiola's name? Is the so called brand more important than what Abiola's name stands for? 3. Does the name of the school have anything to do with the performance of the students? Do you know how many Nigerians are attending wonderful Universities all around the world with very ugly sounding names? 4. Do you know the meaning of fake life and inferiority complex? I am so glad GEJ made this move because it has once again shown Lagos for what it really is. A city of fake people living fake lives. This is so shameful. Students protesting that their University name was changed to a name that doesn't have swag. Imagine how many Universities would love to bear Mandela's name, even outside SA. Most Nigerians are suffering from acute inferio complexio syndrom a.k.a inferiority complex(coined). They are rubbishing Abiola's name and legacy and you my friend are a mega Arrow! |
This is so hilarious and so cool. I like how this is exposing many SW peeps as very petty people. It is so pathetic and the rest of the country is laughing at them. So renaming UNILAG to Moshood Abiola University is now an evil thing. Ok tell me, is it because the action was from GEJ or because Abiola doesnt deserve it? Oh, I forgot. You said it is because he didnt follow due process. Hahahahahahaha. This is better than night of a thousand laughs! Seriously! So the president of Nigeria has to follow due process and make consultations to name or rename a federal University? Make consultations with who and take permission from who? This is really good, i must tell you. And to think these complaints are coming from those who say the president is not facing the right issues but is majoring on the minor? Now you are asking him to commit time and energy to go on consultation to rename a federal University? What was the due process like when Ife was renamed to OAU, when ABU was named or when Nnamdi Azikiwe Univerty was named? I like how this is making our SW brothers look really petty and confused. So Abiola is not worth UNILAG being named after him? Or the naming of Unilag to MAU will reduce the academic performance of the students? Or exactly what will spoil, please tell me? This is really ridiculous and shows how petty we are as a nation and how much we cling to material and mundane stuff. Students even coming out on the streets to shamefully register their disgust at a University being named after Abiola who these same people have claimed is a real hero and symbol of democracy. wow! And just to add that some f00l came earlier to warn that UNIBEN should not be named or the sky will fall. dunce! I am an Alumni of UNIBEN and "read my lips", UNIBEN will be renamed one day after someone deserving and nothing will happen. It will not reduced my earnings as an Alumni, it will not spoil anything except from my stup1d Nigerian ego that amounts to nothing and is the very representation of what is bedeviling this country. |
ypzilanti: I will give you two black inventors: George washington Carver and Frederick Jones. Did you know that the term 'the real Macoy' was derived from the invention of a black man called Elijah Mcoy? Of course there are many more as wikipedia and google will show you. Just type in black inventors. Of course they are all African American because america has got a system that recognizes excellence and promotes it regardless of race...its a purely capitalist system.Bro, you are soooooooo wrong!!! First, the people created the system. The system did not create the people. So your argument that the system is the problem falls flat on its face. Secondly, all the inventions of modern day science are based on research and principles dating as far back as 1000 BC. From the persian and greek empires, scientists and phylosophers have been researching seriously and building the principles that power todays inventions. These principles and many of the building blocks were not developed by America. The printing machine was developed during the dark ages, long be America as even found. Archimedis, Socrates and many more lived long before the USA was founded. Our current number system is based on the Arabic system. They had universities long before USA. Please stop trying to debunk fact! The black man needs to accept his failure and be reborn. Put off your flimsy pride man and open your mind to learning! |
tonyx4x44: Absence of James ibori, Patricia etteh, IGP balogun etcAnytime I see posts like these in threads like this, I feel really bad because it tells me that this generation does not understand the problem of Nigeria and hence cannot solve it. Ibori, Etteh and co just came on the scene. Nigeria has been destroyed long before they came. As much as they are corrupt, it is completely ignorant to blame them for Nigeria's problem. They are at best contributors to the problem. This has long been my argument that corruption in itself is not the problem of Nigeria. Corruption is a result of things that are more fundamental. Some of the reasons listed here have been spot on. The white man's effect is major. It is interesting to note that pre colonial Africa, especially sub saharan Africa, was never developed by our ancestors. There was little education and research. They just lived in the forests and made love to their women and fought wars with their neighbours. Secondly, the diversity of Nigeria has proven to be a real drawback. Corruption thrives in Nigeria because of our diversity. If you have ever worked in government circles, you will understand that. There is no way a group of people will develop or seek to develop an entity when they don't have a collective sense of ownership for that entity. That is why the average Nigerian just wants to have his share of the pie(national cake) and leave. We do not see ourselves as one people. Every new president, ministers, directors or parastatals, and sometimes governors, that come in, just try to put their own people in place or put their own interests before others. When Yaradua took over from OBJ, he sacked the 16 directors of NNPC and appointed 13 new northern directors and 3 southern directors. Just imagine that. This has always been the problem with Nigeria. Thirdly, our population is growing massively and unfortunately we produce next to nothing as a country. In simple economics, if you consume more than you produce, you will eventually go down. It isn't rocket science. We don't even produce Yam pounding machines and we are the ones that eat pounded yam. We import toothpicks and straw. Its just terrible. The government must rise up and provide the right environment for development but it is imperative to add that the average Nigerian must grow out of selfishness and dream. We must become revolutionaries and not complain and cry to the government to change everything. We must precipitate the needed change. Every problem a society faces is a grand opportunity for inventors to emerge! |
alj harem: Sir you talk like someone that lack sense. No form of brain at allI can see how much brain and sense you have yet you don't know the implication of calling someone a thief in public without enough evidence to nail them in court. You have a stupi1d and delusional appraisal of your self worth. Low IQ! |
doctokwus: He hasn't helped anybody in any way;y does he still d name of d so called senator dupe to himself,he shd come out wt d name or else kp quiet, afterall majority of nigerians av also fallen victim,d only way to bring anybody to book is u name d person& provide proofSo if he names someone and his proof is not enough to nail him and he gets sued for libel, you will feel ok, abi? Some of you lot are sooooooo stup1d, it is alarming! How does just naming people aid in the fight against corruption? Anyone can name anyone. And by the way, if he names someone you support, the same you will come here and call it witch hunt or fighting perceived enemies! The biggest problem with fighting corruption in Nigeria is that most of those shouting about corruption are as corrupt as those they accuse. The only reason they are shouting is that its not their person that's in power. He that must come to equity must come with clean hands! |
This whole thread is an insult to historians. People just came here to display their monumental ignorance of history. Particularly the likes of Alj Harem. They even went as far as quoting st.up1d blogs written by dunces who can't tell an apple from an orange. I don't even know where to start from. The whole of western Africa is interwoven historically but that in way suggests they are one tribe or have one origin. Back in Naija, tribes that share border have interwoven languages because HUMANS DON'T LIVE IN ISOLATION! They interact continually. Whether to do business or to fight wars, they interact and rub off on each other. Sometimes one tribe dominates. Bini and Edo are 2 different things. Bini refers to one tribe and Edo refers to a group of tribes. Edo is best defined as a group of tribes who historically fall under the reign of the ancient Benin kingdom. It that context, even part of the Yoruba are Edos. The ancient Benin kingdom spanned from present day republic of Benin to Asaba in Delta state. But the ancient Benin kingdom had no sophisticated government structure so the Obas couldn't really establish the Bini culture on those lands. Unlike what you will find in Europian kingdoms. That being said, let us lay the facts bare on the table: 1. Binis have nothing to do with Yorubas apart from being proximity neighbours. 2. Most West African kingdoms don't have written down history. Most of it is oral tradition. There were no intellectual learning centers or schools or libraries like in Arabic and Europian kingdoms. 3. The Binis have a more coherent account of their history because of the homogenuity of the Benin kingdom and dynasty. The Yorubas are more disjointed. 4. The Binis or Edos don't see themselves as Yorubas in any way. In fact, the average Benin guy has a negative picture of Yorubas. He thinks they are a dirty and cowardly tribe not to be trusted. That is not intended to insult the Yorubas, it is just a direct answer o the @op's question. 5. Binis or the Edo people do not speak or understand Yoruba at all. The only people that speak Yoruba are those who live in border towns with Yoruba states. Then the Akoko Edo people. So to the question of what percentage speak Yoruba as a second language, the answer is near zero. The Benin language is a very concentrated language and difficult to speak compared to the Yoruba language. There are very few words shared between the Benin language and Yoruba. In fact, there are probably more similarities in words between Benin and Ibo languages than between Benin and Yoruba. In terms of culture, Binis and Yorubas don't have much similarities in culture. I was born in Benin City and grew up there. I now live in Lagos and can't see similarities in both cultures. The Binis will not want to be part of an Oduduwa Republic. That I can tell you. |
I think one basic point in GEJ's statement many are missing here is that there has to be a benchmark for measuring standards. You cannot run a system on assumptions. Its like if I say it is alarming that 80% of drivers on Nigerian roads did not go thru a driving school or did not do any driving test. Someone might argue that many of them can drive well and they might be right but the fact is you will have to measure the driving standard of that place by a recognised training standard, not by assumptions. In this case the standard is a driving test. For the universities, the standard is the academic qualification of its teaching staff. In this case, the number of professors it has. This is a yardstick used all over the world. Universities all over the world are rated based on how many professors they have as well as how much research material these professors produce. The interesting part is that even if you produce good materials, sometimes the materials might not be recognised if you do not command a good CV or sometimes they are not taking seriously if you do not come from a highly rated institution. The western world takes these standards into consideration a lot. It is wrong to say people should not care how many professors we have just because some people have excelled without being professors. |
This my 'uncle' has really lost focus!! Abi he just want to create a ministerial committee to 'look' into creating more PhD's like himself? Uncle Jona, U make me ashamed sometimes to tell someone I am a PhD student. If all PhD's were to be like yours, I'll rather prefer my FSLC(primary 6). Stop setting up committees and start working!! I'm happy you won't come back to this Niger-Delta after your tenure, because it won't contain 2 of us.
It is sad that Nairaland is now filled with kids who have some cheap Internet connection and think insulting their president is fun. Just another evidence of how bad the education system is. What the president has noted is so profound. It is one of the core reason Nigeria is shyte! How can a system with half baked graduates produce anything? Whether it is power or agriculture or infrastructure, no country has been able to transform itself without the aid of serious research and researchers. The secret of the new Asia are the professors and professionals who came back from the western world to commit their knowledge to rebuilding their countries. If GEJ or anyone can trigger that kind of reverse brain drain, he/they will be true legends. And to those posting out of gross stu.p.idity, there is no government in the world that doesn't work with commitees. From US to China, all governments setup commitees do stuff. It is normal government protocol. If you don't know that, ypu shouldn't be posting on a forum like this. You should go back to school. |
CHESSBOARD: Stop being miopic, their Glo contract alone was 250 million Naira. their remix with Akon has sold over 10 million copies worldwide, xly that by just 100 Naira per copy thats 1 billion Naira, The only Nigerian Hiphop artists to pull over 10000 ppl in UK, My brother if u r Made you are made.I honestly didn't want to comment until I read the above. These are all lies. Their contract with glo is not 240mil and they didn't sell any 10 million copies. Please stop pushing lies around. Even Akon himself has not sold up to 2million copies in any album worldwide not to talk of 2 unknown Nigerian boys. They were not even in the list of first 10 most popular African artists published by CNN. There are very few people in the world that sell above 5million copies. Its amazing how Africans lie and deceive. This is the reason Africa is backward. False life and fake lives. You don't even see mega rock stars displaying their wealth. Bill gates and Warren buffet live simple lives while these poor Africans go around claiming they have money. Result of poverty mentality and illiteracy. When you are truly rich, you don't flaunt it, you become humble. And just to add that an artist makes 5 naira per CD sold in Nigeria, not 100 naira. And PSquare songs are not in stores in Europe or America. They are mostly sold by Nigerians abroad. Same with most Nigerian artists. Only Fela, Asa, Nneka and some few others have their music in regular stores. |
