The winner of 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola's son, Abdulmumuni Abiola, has said the country is not ripe for a youth president. Abiola told journalists at the maiden national youth summit organised by The Zealous Kwara Youths in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Saturday, that though he was hopeful that a youth could become president someday, it was imperative to give President Muhammadu Buhari a second chance, The Punch reports. He said: “I do believe that there shall be a time, just like in Canada and France, when we have somebody that is around 30 in power. I don’t just think that time is right. I think there is a reason why Buhari is there and I would want us to be patient to see him through. We should give him another four years and he will handover power to the youth. “I do not have anybody else to campaign for. Somebody after 20 years honoured my father and did what other people refused to do, so I am supporting Buhari for a second term.” The President of the ZKY, Mr John Adegboyega, said it was necessary to sanitise Nigeria of corrupt practises. Adegboyega added that 2019 was not yet time for a youth to become president. He said the youth should participate actively in the political process and elect people who would deliver good governance and move the country forward. https://lailasnews.com/nigeria-not-ripe-for-youth-president-mko-abiolas-son/

The ruling All Progressives Congress has adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as the party's presidential candidate for next year’s general election. The presidential primary is scheduled to hold on September 20, Guardian reports. The National Secretary of the APC, Maimala Buni, while responding to questions from journalists in Abuja, however said any other member interested in the presidential race was free to pick the nomination form. He explained that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party had already endorsed the candidature of the president. “Once the National Executive Committee of the party passes a vote of confidence on the president, that president stands accepted because the NEC is the highest organ of the party and it met to take the decision, where every interest was represented,” saidBuni. “So the NEC of APC has passed a vote of confidence on our president and that means every APC member has endorsed him.” He also said the decision was not new, pointing out that it was the same standard that was obtainable in advanced democracies. As at close of the collection of nomination forms yesterday, Buhari was the only aspirants that had the forms. The submission of the forms closes today. https://lailasnews.com/apc-adopts-buhari-as-partys-presidential-candidate/ lalasticlala

A white Texas police officer who entered an apartment mistaking it for her own and shot dead the black man who lived there was arrested on manslaughter charges. Officer Amber Guyger with the Dallas Police Department was arrested Sunday and booked into the county jail, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. At the end of her shift and still in uniform, Guyger entered the apartment in a complex near downtown Dallas late Thursday and shot the black man who she thought was an intruder, police said. Minutes after shooting she called emergency services and told responding officers that she thought she had entered her own apartment. The victim, an African-American, was identified as Botham Shem Jean, 26, an immigrant from the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. Jean had graduated from a private Christian college in the state of Arkansas in 2016 and had since been working at the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas. According to the Dallas Morning News, Guyger got off on the wrong floor of the building complex and approached an apartment exactly one floor above her own. The door was unlocked and the lights were off and when Guyger saw a figure moving in the dark she pulled out her pistol and opened fire thinking it was an intruder, the newspaper reported. Dallas police said that Guyger, 30, has been with the department for four years. Local reports said she was involved in an earlier shooting in May 2017. The Dallas-Fort Worth NBC affiliate reported that Guyger was released late Sunday on a $300,000 bail. Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall took the unusual step of handing the case over to the Texas Rangers — a division of the Department of Public Safety — to “eliminate the appearance of any potential bias”, police said in a statement. “On behalf of the Dallas Police Department, we are continuing to pray for Mr. Jean’s family, and ask that the community remain patient as this investigation is conducted,” Hall said. Hall, who is African-American, became the city’s first female police chief in September 2017. Jean’s mother Allison Jean, earlier told NBC News that the incident “feels like a nightmare”. Her son “was in no wrong place at any wrong time. He was in his sanctuary, in the place where he called home. He didn’t deserve this,” she told NBC. https://lailasnews.com/white-female-cop-enters-home-mistaking-it-for-her-own-kills-black-man/

The Nigerian Police Force has claimed that the raid on Edwin Clark's home is illegal and the five persons involved in the “unauthorised” search conducted at the home of the prominent Niger-Delta leader, have been detained. Police spokesperson Jimoh Moshood said in a statement Tuesday night that not only was the raid illegal, the Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris has ordered immediate apprehension of the four officers and an informant who were identified as having participated in it. “The Inspector-General of Police is not aware and did not order the raid of the residence of the Elder Statesman, Chief Edwin Clark,” Mr Moshood said while reacting to the Vanguard’s version of the story. “Consequently,” Mr Moshood said, Mr Idris directed the detention and investigation of those involved. “The outcome of the investigation will definitely be made public,” he said. Mr Clark, considered one of the most influential leaders of the Niger Delta was a major backer of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan who lost the 2015 election to President Muhammadu Buhari. Mr Clark and other Niger Delta leaders, as well as some other Southern leaders, have since then been clamouring for a restructuring of the Nigerian federation. In his reaction the to raid on his home, he wondered how a government would believe a 92-year-old man like him would stockpile arms and ammunition at home. https://lailasnews.com/raid-on-edwin-clarks-home-illegal-officers-detained-police lalasticlala

A Nigerian artiste known as GabbyG, has had his music video taken down by YouTube from their platform just few days after hitting the airwaves, for copyright infringement. The song titled Amen, was released by the Italy based musician. The song became controversial following a complaint made by a female German artiste’s manager, Maka Jackson, claiming ownership of the beat used in the song. The controversy has also resulted in YouTube pulling down the video following a take-down notice made by Maka to it, alleging copyright infringement. YouTube warned Mr. Gabby: “Due to a copyright take-down notice that we have received, we had to take down your video title AMEN featuring Mr. NATURE, from YouTube. The take-down was issued by Maka Jackson. This means that your video can no longer be played on YouTube. Please don’t upload videos containing copyrighted content that you aren’t allowed to,”In his reaction, Mr. Gabby, denied any copyright infringement in the beat, saying that he bought the beat from his producer, who accidentally was the same producer used by Maka. “I bought the beat from my producer who is also the one producing for Maka and there was nothing to suggest that Maka has the copyright to the beat.So how could she have accused me of infringing on her ownership of the beat? She is just trying to intimidate me,” Mr. Gabby said. Maka, who is an artiste manager had claimed that she bought the beat from the producer for one of her artistes whom she no longer manages, and therefore has the ownership right to the beat. Mr. Gabby has however vowed to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion as the video was already drawing large viewership before it was pulled down. https://lailasnews.com/youtube-sanctions-nigerian-artiste-for-using-german-singers-beat/ lalasticlala

E-commerce giant Amazon is now worth $1 trillion following Apple's ascent into 13-digit territory at the beginning of August. Amazon and Apple now make up more than 8% of the entire value of the S&P 500, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst for S&P, Reuters reports. A trillion dollars may be an arbitrary threshold, but it's still a remarkable statement of how quickly the 24-year-old company has grown, and the boundless confidence investors have in its future. Just contrast Amazon with the brick and mortar sector, where 90% of American retail spending still takes place. In order to get to a $1 trillion market cap, you'd have to add up the valuations of the 14 largest big box retailers ranked by 2017 revenues, from Walmart (WMT) to Autonation (AN). Investors are also way more excited about Amazon than other grocery, building supply, and general retail stocks, which have an average price-to-earnings ratio of between about 20 and 40 for the previous year, according to New York University finance professor and valuation expert Aswath Damodaran. Amazon's price-to-earnings ratio is about 180. Apple took almost 38 years as a public company to achieve the trillion dollar milestone, while Amazon got there in 21 years. While Apple’s iPhone and other devices remain popular and its revenues are growing, it is not keeping up with Amazon’s blistering sales growth. Amazon has impressed investors by successfully diversifying its business into virtually every corner of the retail industry, altering how consumers buy products and putting major pressure on many brick-and-mortar stores. It also provides video streaming services and bought upscale supermarket Whole Foods. And its cloud computing services for companies have become a major driver of earnings and revenue. “Amazon’s a little bit more dynamic than Apple because the iPhone has become more mature. Amazon’s cloud business is an extra growth driver that Apple doesn’t have,” said Daniel Morgan, portfolio manager at Synovus Trust in Atlanta, Georgia who describes Amazon’s cloud services as its “crown jewel.” https://lailasnews.com/e-commerce-giant-amazon-is-now-worth-1-trillion/ lalasticlala

A female corps member serving in Abuja, Lizzy Onuh, and two others on Tuesday were arraigned before a Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates Court in Abuja for allegedly trespassing on a property. Onuh and her housemates, Lilian Kelechukwu and Ogbonna Ozugbemene, are standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, trespass and mischief. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges, NAN reports. The prosecutor, Noel Omeje, told the court that one Mohammed Daggash of Prince & Princess Estate, Gaduwa, Abuja, reported the matter to the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, on Aug. 31. He said the complainant told the police that the defendants conspired amongst themselves, broke in and trespassed into his house located at Plot 6, House 48, Prince & Princess Estate, Gaduwa, Abuja. The prosecutor further alleged that all efforts to eject the defendants out of the said property had proved abortive as they had continued to live there without the authorisation of the complainant for months. Omeje said the offences contravened Sections 97, 348 and 326 of the Penal Code. The Chief Magistrate, Ibrahim Muhammed, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N250,000 each with one surety each in like sum. Two lesbians caned in public for engaging in lesbian sex in a car were in Malaysia, have also been finned by a court on Monday. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community is routinely persecuted in Muslim-majority Malaysia, where they are seen as a threat to conservative values. The women, aged 32 and 22, had pleaded guilty in August to attempting lesbian sex, forbidden under Islamic law. They were sentenced to a fine and six lashings of the cane. The sentence was carried out in front of about 100 people at the Sharia High Court in Terengganu, a conservative state ruled by the Islamist opposition party Pan-Malaysian Islamist Party, according to a report by English-language daily the New Straits Times. It was the first conviction for same-sex relations and the first time a caning had been carried out in public in the state, Satiful Mamat, a member of the Terengganu state executive council told Reuters. “Sharia criminal procedure allows the court to determine where the sentence will be carried out and requires that it must be witnessed by a number of other Muslims,” said Satiful, who attended the hearing. Satiful said the punishment was “not intended to torture or injure”. “The reason it is carried out in public is for it to serve as a lesson to society,” he said. Malaysia has a dual-track legal system, with Islamic criminal and family laws applicable to Muslims running alongside civil laws. The caning of women is banned under civil law but allowed under Islamic laws in some states. Amnesty International said the caning marked “an appalling day” for human rights in Malaysia. “To inflict this brutal punishment on two people for attempting to engage in consensual, same-sex relations is an atrocious setback on the government’s efforts to improve its human rights records,” Rachel Chhoa-Howard, the group’s Malaysia researcher, said. Malaysian women’s groups, Justice for Sisters and Sisters in Islam called for a review of laws that allowed the caning of women. “The execution that took place… is a travesty and a grave miscarriage of justice,” the groups said. The case comes amid concerns around growing intolerance toward the LGBT community in Malaysia in recent weeks. A transgender woman was beaten up by a group of assailants in Seremban, south of Kuala Lumpur on August 15, in what activists said was part of a growing hostility towards gay and transgender people. https://lailasnews.com/two-lesbians-caned-in-public-for-engaging-in-sex-in-malaysia

Frontline Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Aspirant, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has laughed off insinuations in some quarters that he is fronting for another aspirant and would eventually step aside from the race. “There is nothing like that. He will never step down for anybody. We are not working with anybody,” a statement issued on Sunday by the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki Presidential Campaign Organisation said. The statement dismissed as “ridiculous, the very idea of Turaki stepping down for anybody”, declaring that “that will never happen”. “Turaki is eminently qualified to provide the kind of leadership Nigeria needs at this critical juncture of her history. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, he has risen to the top of his profession, Law. He has requisite managerial and leadership experiences, having served his country meritoriously as a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Supervising Minister of Labour and Productivity, and Chairman, Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of the Security Challenges in the North East,” the statement said. It further noted that “Turaki is neither old nor too young. He is strong, vibrant and possess a first-class intellect and the kind of radical ideas needed to take Nigeria out of the woods and make her a respected member of the comity of nations whose citizens would be proud of, instead of the present situation where many Nigerians have lost hope in the country and would do anything to migrate abroad through any means possible.” The statement further noted that Turaki, the current Chairman of Former PDP Ministers’ Forum of Nigeria, who picked his Presidential Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms on Wednesday, has taken a head start in the presidential race and has no reason to back down for any reason. “Turaki has toured more states than any other aspirant and has received assurances of support from many of the states so far visited for consultations. An instrumentalist, Temitope Adeyemi, who was framed up by SARS operatives for robbery, spent three months in Kirikiri Medium Prison where he described as Hell. Adeyemi who shared his experience with Gbenga Adeniji of The Punch explained that the Police refused to make a thorough investigation before taking him to court. What job do you do? I am an instrumentalist and I am from Osun State. What happened the day you were arrested by the police? On May 23, 2018, I attended a choir vigil at my church in the Ifako area of Lagos. After the vigil the next day, I decided to rest well and I left the church around 11am to my house in Amikanle, AIT area, Alagbado, Lagos. I took a tricycle. As I alighted from the tricycle, I discovered that my phone battery was low. I decided to go to a friend’s shop close by to charge it before going home. He operates a gaming centre and I also used the opportunity to play with him. After about an hour in the shop, two men and a woman came and asked me to come out that they wanted to see me. I initially didn’t answer them because I was busy. I later noticed that the two men with the woman were a youth leader in the area and a man who collects money from commercial buses at the bus stop. But I don’t know the woman. They left and returned about 15 minutes later. I left the shop and went to meet them to know why they wanted to see me. What did they tell you they wanted to see you for? The men said the woman told them that some people came to rob in their house on the Monday of that week and that she recognised me as one of the robbers. I was dumbfounded and couldn’t instantly comprehend the allegation. She said the person wore a green T-shirt. When I composed myself after the initial shock, I told her that I could not do such a thing and that I was even at home throughout with my mother on the Monday she mentioned. I also said I don’t have a green T-shirt. It was like a dream to me. She also said her husband was not at home the day of the incident. As she was talking, a man appeared from nowhere and he started shouting, “That is him. That is the guy.” I later learnt that he was the husband of my accuser. I was speechless as he spoke. I couldn’t understand how the husband, whom the wife just said was not at home when a phantom robbery happened, could say I was a thief that came to their house. I was prepared to follow them anywhere especially as I was the only one defending myself in their midst. I left my bag containing about N2,000, a toothbrush, bathing soap and some clothes which I took to church. I followed them to Amikanle police post and when we got there, the officers there directed us to the police station along the AIT road. When we got there, the DPO didn’t hear from me. He kept saying that I should speak the truth and return two phones and a laptop which the woman said I stole. He stated that I would soon confess if I was well handled. I insisted that I was innocent and that I wasn’t a robber. I told him that I was an instrumentalist and didn’t even know the woman or where she lives. I expected the police officer to hear me out and carry out an investigation. As the DPO spoke, the woman’s husband said that he should not worry that he had called SARS officers to come and take me away. I didn’t know what to do at that point as I was in tears. What later happened? About an hour later, two men came in a van and introduced themselves as officers of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad. They ordered me to put off my shirt and used it to blindfold me. They also put handcuffs on my hands and legs. They said they were taking me to their office in Ikeja. As we made to leave, my accuser’s husband told the policemen that I dropped a big bag at the shop and that it contained guns and about N360,000. They led me to the place and when they checked the bag, they saw that it contained N2, 000, a toothbrush , bathing soap and some clothes. They arrested a lady in my friend’s shop where the people earlier came. She was asked to enter the van and we all went to their office. They said on the way that they would buy a rope which they would use to hang me in their office. But they couldn’t buy any as they said the ones they saw were not strong enough. When we got to their office, we were asked to write statements and we did. We just started crying. By that time they had removed the handcuffs on my leg and the blindfold. Someone offered to buy the lady food but she said she was not hungry because she was fasting. She was later released because I didn’t see her anymore. On the next day, I was ordered to lie down on a long bench and one of them used the flat side of a cutlass to beat me on my bare back. Each time I fell off the bench, I commanded to lie on the bench again facing down. I cried my eyes out. On the third day, they took me to a room upstairs and each person, who passed by, asked me what I did. They would say I was a robber and the person would kick, beat and punch me. I initially thought I was going to die. I always told them that I was not a robber that I never stole from anyone. On that day, my pastor and mother came and they stopped beating me before they allowed them to see me. But I was too weak to say anything. When did they take you to court? It was later that the investigating police officer came to tell me to have a bath that I was dirty. He also bought food for me within the premises. On my first day in court, my accuser and the IPO didn’t show up. I was charged with armed robbery. I was also not granted bail and asked to be taken in a Black Maria to the Kirikiri Medium Prison. I was really happy the day I was granted a bail. But I was still trying to meet the bail conditions when the Directorate of Public Prosecutions legal advice came that I should be released. As you can see in the copy of the legal advice, the DPP noted that the police didn’t investigate any of what I said. It further added that, “This office shall not proceed against the suspect based solely on the doubtful identification of the suspect. Consequently, the doubt raised should be resolved in his favour.” I was released from prison on August 24. I spent three months in detention on trumped-up charge. I headed straight to church. I was not feeling fine and still sickly till now. How would you describe your experience in prison while awaiting trial? It was as if I was in hell on earth. It was not a good experience at all. I have never experienced such a thing before. I always prayed to God that He should please see to my release because I was innocent. I served as the assistant pastor in the cell where I was placed. We prayed every day. I prayed that God should save me from false accusation since I was coming from his house the day my accusers accosted me. What lessons did you learn from the experience? I learnt lots of things. I discovered that I have to be more careful and calm. It was not that I wasn’t calm or careful before now, but I saw reasons to do that more. I cannot in my life think that someone could just accuse me of what I didn’t do. I have yet to understand why they did that to me but in all, I thank God. I learnt that it is a new gimmick where someone would just identify another person at random that he partook in a phony robbery in their house. They will then invite the police and name a particular amount which would cover the said stolen items. Once you are able to pay, they let you off the hook else they say you would go to court. I recall that they kept asking me to pay N360,000 which my accusers said was the cost of two phones and laptop they said were stolen. But I couldn’t pay for what I didn’t steal. I was in court thrice and neither the IPO nor my accusers showed up. I was unjustly beaten and locked up. I leave all to God. Is there anything you want to say? I want to really thank PUNCH for its stories on the matter when it went viral on the Internet. I also appreciate Betty Abah of CEE-HOPE who stood by us during the travail and a legal aid NGO, Gavel, that worked on the case. I thank God immensely for sending all these people to me during my time of urgent need. How are you feeling now? I am just getting better. The tests I did at a hospital in Ogba area of Lagos on August 27 showed that I have a perforated ear drum and an injured arm and shoulder. https://lailasnews.com/3-months-in-prison-was-hell-man-framed-up-by-sars-for-robbery/ lalasticlala

A man jailed for armed robbery in 1999 is seeking nearly $1million in compensation after police found the real criminal who only has close resemblance with the innocent man. Metro UK reports that Richard Jones, from Kansas City, was released last year after a judge called into question his original conviction. He had spent 17 years in prison because an eyewitness said he was the robber. Interestingly, other inmates repeatedly told him he looked like a criminal named Ricky Amos while he was in jail. Jones lives on the other side of Kansas while his lookalike lived near where the robbery took place. It later turned out there was no DNA or fingerprint evidence linking Jones to the crime. He has now filed a petition seeking $1million in compensation from the state of Kansas. His lawyer, Richard Ainsworth, is hoping that he will get a certificate of innocence and be compensated so he could finally move on with his life. Jones said he missed seeing his 24-year-old and 19-year-old daughters grow up. He said: ‘It took a big chunk of my life that I can never get back. I am just trying to get stable in my everyday life. I am still transitioning.’ ‘At that time, I was pretty much trying to be responsible as a father. ‘I was not perfect, but I was a big part of their lives, and when I got incarcerated, it was hard for me because I was used to being around for my kids.’ ‘It was a hard pill to swallow.’ The petition reads: ‘This compensation is relatively small given the unfathomable hardship of 17 years of wrongful imprisonment.’ Mr Jones’ lawyer, Richard Ainsworth, said they were hoping to get a certificate of innocence and for compensation so he could finally move on with his life. The 42-year-old had previously tried to appeal his case several times but was unsuccessful. But after hearing about a man who looked just like him, and even had the same first name, he contacted the Midwest Innocent Project, which provides legal services to people who have been wrongly-convicted. Another lawyer working on Mr Jones’ case said: ‘We were floored by how much they looked alike. Everybody has a doppelgänger, luckily we found his.’ https://lailasnews.com/man-spends-17-years-in-jail-over-resemblance-with-real-criminal/ lalasticlala

Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke was yesterday accused of slapping an airport staff at the Muritala Mohammed Airport and subsequently arrested by the Police, but he denied the report saying it was just a minor altercation. In an chat with The NET, Jim Iyke denied assaulting anyone at the airport saying: 'people are just amazing, the truth is that I was running late for a flight in Abuja, and my people had sent my luggage a flight ahead. I tried hard not to miss the flight, but by the time I made it to the gate, the captain had almost shut the aircraft’. He explained further that one of the security guards close by got too eager and got involved. ‘One of the security guards who saw me struggling to make my way in got overzealous and got into an argument with my PA. Then they started exchanging words and pointing fingers at the heat of the moment. At the end of the day, we couldn’t even make it (the flight) and when we were coming back, the airport assistant went to call the police and said my Personal Assistant hit his face and pushed him. But when the policeman saw that it was me, I told them to let us go downstairs to resolve the matter, it was an issue of tempers fraying. We then went downstairs and the matter was resolved. I even boarded the same Dana Air Craft and I was shocked upon my arrival to hear that I was arrested by the Police. Which Police?’ He continued to say: I know that people need content, but let’s not blow things out of proportion, I am not the kind of person who will post a rejoinder on issues like this, because I will be fuelling the fire, but we are all human and we lose our temper at different points in our lives, especially with how rude and unprofessional people are and more bewildering is the fact that people never want to hear the other side of the story’ ‘The funny part is that this guy they said I slapped came to pick me up at the lounge and took me to the plane. He got me a better seat and I gave him little change because I know the country is hard. We hugged and ended it on a great note. The manager himself took me to the plane and I told him to school his staff on how to treat people. Its sad the length that people will go to spread the fake news about people. Thank you for being one of the credible media houses who actually confirm news before publishing it,’ Jim said. https://lailasnews.com/i-didnt-assault-anyone-at-the-airport-jim-iyke-opens-up-on-alleged-arrest/ lalasticlala
