Nigeria is fairly a democratic country. Democracy is about the people's welfare and interests. Interestingly, President Tinubu always claims to be a democrat. A true democrat is never autocratic. Therefore, President Tinubu should listen to the people he is leading on the issue of going to war with Niger over its internal affair. Yes, Nigeria should be concerned about the happenings in Niger but it has enough status as a big brother to diplomatically help that country resolve its internal problems without sacrificing our soldiers and other resources we should devote to developing Nigeria. In democracy, people's opinion count and the truth is that majority of Nigerians especially northerners who share common borders with Niger are against this war. So going to war in addition to the recent toxic policies will imply that President Tinubu's popularity and credibility as a leader and politician will crumble. Second term will be an uphill task. In addition, majority of NASS members are also against the war. Again going to war implies Tinubu is likely to be impeached if Northern NASS members mobilize to secure vital numbers. If you don't listen to the people who elected you, you will lose legitimacy. I expect Tinubu to be aware of this given his experience. Let France fight its battle and carry its cross. After all, it has deployed every tactics in past to dilute influence of Nigeria in ECOWAS through inordinate control of Francophone countries. Recall, how France recently frustrated the ECOWAS single currency initiative. |
Tribalism is the state of having a very strong feeling of loyalty to your tribe. The fact is that every tribe is tribalistic and the level of tribalism exhibited depends on the issue on the table. So obviously, Jack Obinyan's opinion is his personal opinion, which nobody should lose sleep over. It may have been driven by prejudice or mischief. |
President Tinubu should stop deliberately allowing himself to be distracted by Niger's internal affairs as against his PRIMARY assignment of leading Nigeria. - Nigeria and Nigerians need his undivided attention 24 hours because the ship is sinking - Nigerians need him to inaugurate his ministers immediately to commence work because even the Niger coupists have beaten him on this as they have cabinet already - Nigerians need him to pay more attention to ACTIVE governance and less attention to political appointments and consolidating his control of APC - Nigerians need him to URGENTLY unveil his policies, programmes, incentive packages and reforms toward reviving the economy and encouraging wide range of business activities - Nigerians need him to pay attention to managing the rising inflations due to removal of subsides and floating exchange rate policy. - Nigerians need him to be a lot swifter in approaching governance than the baba go slow he is currently is. Where is the manifesto that was sold to us? What about constituting Presidential Economic Team? What has happened to erudite Femi Gbajabiamila many hoped would keep Tinubu focused on the things that matter? Are Tinubu's recently appointed Senior Special Assistants sleeping rather than brainstorming? What's going on? |
GreyLaw:Niger is strategic to US in the war against ISIS in Africa. It has a military base in Niger. The country is also strategic to France and it maintains a military base in Niger. I don't think these countries will give up until this junta makes concessions with respect to their interests. |
ojoadeola:I understand your position but you see, democracy is also about people's opinion. Majority of Nigerians especially northerners are against this war threat. Don't forget that majority of NASS members are also against the war and this implies if Tinubu supports the war and it actually takes place, he is likely to be impeached. If you don't listen to the people who elected you, you will lose legitimacy. I expect Tinubu to be aware of this given his experience. |
Though Africa might be poor, I don't think these West African army generals are stupid robots to be controlled by a remote controller. Yes, they will obey last order from their C-in-Cs but they sure do have inputs on the way forward. And their professional inputs are critical. But the Niger Junta on their own should show goodwill and good faith by at least meeting with ECOWAS and promising to return the country to democracy as soon as possible. Their citizens deserve peace of mind to carry on with their lives. The ongoing grandstanding is not good for either sides. |
obailala:You mean he doesn't need Northern legislators in NASS to govern smoothly? He doesn't need them for his 2nd term? |
ECOWAS led by President Tinubu will NOT invade Niger. Tinubu, as a politician, can NEVER ignore the clearly-communicated opposition of the Northern political and religious leaders to military action against their kits and kins in Niger. I believe what is currently playing out is a hybrid of brinkmanship and psychological warfare. It serves the dual purpose of putting pressure on Junta in Niger and making US and France happy. |
Luckysbab:Wike is a certified thug and never an enlightened intellectual like rufai. |
Asari Dokubo is sounding increasingly desperate for a national security gig. He is really in dire need of money. What happened to the billions of Naira he extracted from FG in his heydays in the creek? ![]() |
President Tinubu should stop deliberately allowing himself to be distracted by Niger's internal affairs as against his PRIMARY assignment of leading Nigeria to prosperity. As at today in Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the official President of Nigeria and as we speak his policies are affecting all Nigerians. As far he remains alive and well and he isn't removed by court or impeached by NASS, he will remain the president for the next 4 years. It doesn't matter what anybody says. #Reality |
manfronthesky:I don't know about attempting to repeal Sharia Law in Kaduna State but his 8 years as governor Kaduna have enough evidence to show his superior and unfair stance in relating to Christians in that state. And by the way he wasn't the first muslim governor of that state but his two tenures were nightmare to Christians. |
Aftermath of Miss Mmesomma's Jamb result national embarrassment, this is good for Anambra State. Proud to be a Nigerian and onye Anambra. However, pictures are great but we need to see video clips. Any link? |
Malam Nasir El Rufai's recent senseless, insensitive, divisive and satanic verses about nothing being wrong with muslims only holding leadership positions in Nigeria is enough to stop him from being a minister that will serve ALL Nigerians irrespective of their religious, political and social affiliations. He painted himself, unnecessarily, as a religious extremist when he should be stateman striving to build a united Nigeria. His sense of fairness, equity, diversity and emotional intelligence seem to be dead. Of recent, Malam Nasir El Rufai has become a huge disappointment. He should retrace his step because even the much revered and legendary late Sir Ahmadu Bello who was more dedicated to the Arewa cause than him didn't walk this dark road of religious hate. He needs to purge his head and heart and become a little open-minded for his well being. He should open up his heart and a ray of light in to be a good Muslim. He should open up the window of his mind and allow fresh air in to remain a balanced human being. He should rise and break the chain of negative extremism less he will die a slave of twisted political logic. |
eldoradoxx:The military mismanaged Nigeria's oil boom. No investment in petrochemicals complexes to back the oil industry. No railway to boost transportation, etc. We spent a fortune fighting apartheid in SA. IBB and Abacha's periods were locust years that laid foundation for today's economic woes. |
omooba969:Military involvement in politics is an aberration and distraction from their primary assignment. |
Johnn44:You are worse than I am. ![]() |
Sounded a little pedestrian but Odogwu is still odogwu, though. |

Gen Abacha had the seasoned Anthony Ani as Minister of Finance and still fleeced Nigeria. Look, appointing a seasoned economist as figure head Prime Minister doesn't stop Junta from looting. The appointment is PR. Nobody argues with a man holding an AK47. Soldiers are not trained to govern any country. It is an aberration. Coup plotters don't come with any roadmap to develop the country. Things are done according to whims and caprices of the junta leader. They are accountable to nobody. Besides, coup plotting is a high risk venture and looting the country is usually the dividend. Soldiers are trained to kill enemies of the country. They give orders and orders are obeyed strictly in line with some rigid hierarchical structure. |

IamAtikulate:Good point but foreign invaders are likely seize airports and strategic locations and infrastructure and then pressure them to give up with superior show of force. |
![]() These coupists are naive. Holding the overthrown president is bringing pressure onto yourselves. Chase him out of the country on exile. Turn around and accuse of corruption and human right abuse. Charge him to court in absentia. Let him rant far way from Niger that he is still the president while you enjoy little breathing space. |
Looks like this Taiwo Oyedele guy knows his onions in taxations. His focus seems to be on how to increase tax revenues by improving ease of engaging productive economic activities, which will naturally make more people financially stable as well as make them more willing and ready to pay tax. Sounds good. Seems like this the dude Nigeria has been looking for. Time will tell, sha. |
The coupists in Niger are being naively stubborn and this wrong approach is about to further destroy the economy of Niger. Now, let me play devil's advocate here. Why rejecting diplomatic overtures, holing yourselves up in Niamey and organize rallies, when you can buy time by appearing visionary and diplomatically level-headed by doing the following: - Holds talks with ECOWAS, AU, UN, US and anybody ready to talk but maintain that the military is not after power but to lay a solid foundation for economic prosperity of Niger - appoint committee to probe certain the financing of certain projects and activities of past government - Cancel whatever agreement reached with Wagner because it is simply an act of harakiri. - appoint a committee to chart short and long term economic prosperity plan for for Niger - appoint a committee to review all bilateral agreements with countries including France and suggest ways Niger could get more out of those agreements - appoint a committee to look into how to strengthen the electoral process in Niger and suggest the timetable for return to democracy, which is subject to the approval of the Junta council - chase the overthrown president out of the country and then accuse him of corruption as well as take him to court in absentia Al these flurry of visionary activities and more will take some time to complete, which will enable the Junta to settle down and consolidate. Besides, any country who observes will slow down and say may be these guys are not typical coupists after all. But so far, they have behaved as fatheads who lack direction. |
wallrichy:You carry vex write this. ![]() |
maticar:Installation of PM doesn't drive the economy. Business activities do. |
