Um no, most of theoil money that oil producing states produce goes back to oil producing states. Its not the "north" or "west" that chop the money, its the governors and politicians of those oil producing states that chop the money.

https://www.sparc-nigeria.com/Uploads/State_GDP.JPG

Which one says north and other non oil producing state chops oil money, yes they receive oil allocations but its considered peanuts compared to oil producing states. Oil producing states still retain the bulk of the allocations and the money the federal government get most get spent on the south.

disclaimer :graph showing per capita income  to the state from the State and Local Government allocation of the Federation Allocation Account Committee.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Will Not Disintegrate by GAR3TH(m): 3:25pm On Jan 24, 2012

I agree that nigeria may not split but I also believe that nigeria will split, but not the way many see. All those tribalist on NL calling for Biafra or  Oodua are just wasting their time because that will never happen. What actually has the STORNGEST possibility of happening is that the core north will separate from Nigeria.Yes i know you all are shocked but its true.  how can the rich south say they want to separate from the poor and marginalized north, usually its the people who are marginalized that are the ones who calls for independents, south sudan, kosovo, pakistan, the confederate states (usa) etc, its going to be the poor north that will separate from the rich south, just like poor south sudan separated from rich north sudan.

Many people say that their tribe is being marginalized, but is that true, no, the only place that is being marginalized is the north. The south receives the bulk of the budget and federal projects while the north gets little. Most of the economic activity and jobs in the country are in the south while in the north there is barely nothing. The south has progressive and developing cities such as Lagos, enugu, port harcourt, calabar, ibadan, benin city, warri, asaba, owerri etc, while the north doesn't really have that much cities that are developing. the south has all the progressive politicians such as fashola, obi, ameachi, duke etc, while the north, well can you name one. all in all the north is the one who are marginalized in nigeria and they are the poorest in the country.

What I believe will happen in the next couple of years is a rise in "northern pride". As the north gets poorer and the south gets richer, As more southern politicians such as fashola or obi become president, as more northerns being to lose influence in the country, as boko haram continues to only bomb the north and makes it look like the south is doing nothing to help, as the corrupt "southern government" continues to marginalize the north, as less and less investments and jobs goes to the north and more and more to south, as the south continues to develop and the north remains the same, that is when the north will declare themselves and independent state. It may not be 2015 but it shall be down the road.

I don't know how the borders will look like or what states or regions of the north will join their new republic but i know for a fact that the north has the highest probability of removing themselves from nigeria. With more southern politicians becoming president and having federal positions, the north will see it as the south torturing the north and thats when they will split. Many people in the south today don't really care about division, after all more and more jobs and investments are coming to the south and the south is developing rapidly. While in the north, the same story of poverty, boko haram and marginalization.

So chances are Nigeria wont split, But if anyone is going to split its likely going to be the north.

Btw, I'm from the south

Thats what I ask every time, boko haram hasn't bombed the south or igboland and corruption is wide spread through nigeria. The same corrupt leaders that are in power now will be the same ones in power in the new country. In other words, nothing will change except the color of the flag.

Splitting won't change the lives of those living in the south the same way the current attacks by boko haram hasn't changed how people in the south live their lives. people in the south watch the news, say oh my god boko haram is horrible, and go on about their day like normal. split wont affect anyone really, like i said its the same nigeria with a different flag

You have not answered my questions. I don't know why you are running away from them. Here they are again:

How does Nigeria get her huge chunk of foreign exchange? Do you export cars, computers and so on? We import almost everything tangible into this country. Do you buy goods abroad with Naira?
I think you have oil syndrome, not everything is nigeria is about oil and there are many sectors in nigeria's economy. Nigeria's GDP is over $350 billion USD a year, out of that 14% is from the oil industry, meaning about 300 Billion USD is created by other sectors of the economy. I don't think you know Nigeria that well to be making such statements. No we don't export cars and no we don't export computer, exporting doesn't mean you have a functioning economy. Obviously I cant name every company but nigeria has numerous airlines, numerous construction company, numerous manufacturing companies such as innoson, numerous food processing companies such as golden penny, numerous private farms, and the list goes on and on. I'm not saying that nigeria has a develop economy but you are not giving nigeria's economy the credit it deserve.

You keep talking about Tax this and Tax that. If you were taxed, would you pay? How sure are you that it won't become another baseless #OccupyNigeria!2.0? People don't have money to pay tax in Nigeria because money does not circulate well into the hands of ordinary folks who needs it to boost the economy from the bottom up.
I pay my taxes, it is your civic responsibility to pay taxes. There are numerous tax codes you can install so that you can collect tax from the poor without hurting them, for example you can tax them $1 dollar a year. 1 dollar times 150 million nigerians means and extra 150 million more dollars for development. Thats just one of numerous way and methods you can tax people and ofcourse Nigeria's tax will be less harsh than her foreign counterparts.

What is monetary policy? How does the Central bank of Nigeria initiate such policy to stabilize the naira; that is by pumping Forex into the system. Do you think they print Naira at will? Why did they limit some big companies from acquiring huge chunk of our foreign exchange to the detriment of importers and occasional travelers like yourself, who need it for business and other things? If there was shortage supply of it, it would cause inflation, thereby eroding the value of your money in the bank, your wage or sales.
confused what does this have to do with anything? I think you went off topic here, I'm the one who was talking about the economy while beaf was the one talking about Foriegn Exchange. both of use were talking about different topic.

You keep talking about agriculture as well; what are you producing agriculturally? How many tonnes of rice and other food items do you import into this country a year? Do you have a modern agricultural equipments that will boost production? If not, are you going to buy those with Naira from China or some other countries? Why is Naira not accepted there?
Like I said you have oil syndrome. just because the federal government is focused on oil doesn't mean that the private sector is doing nothing. There are many privately own farms in nigeria producing foods and crops like corn, cassava, palm oil, fruits, rice etc. as a matter of fact Nigeria produces 3.4 million tonnes of rice a year and output is expected to increase with the rise in investment. source

I expected you to say that we needed innovation and indigenous manufacturing of both heavy and light industries. That is always the backbone of a nations economy.
I did, Nigeria is not a develop country and does not have a develop economy but you guys dont give nigeria's economy the credit it deserve.I'm not saying its perfect or the best, but rather its developing and progressing. ofcourse it needs more work but you guys talk as if we live in somolia.

Dude, please take a look at this thread titled, "We Have Work To Do - Cities With Higher Gdp Than Nigeria:" https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-500596.0.html
We are not nearly diversified enough if that is happening.
Yes, we may not earn as much but its a start, we are a 3rd world country for a reason. The budgets may not be as big as the oil budget or budgets of western powers but it will get bigger and surpass the oil budget as we develop. Through the eye of economist and investors Nigerian is not known for its oil but rather its economic potential and with that economic potential is revenue for the gov, all we need is time and an enabling environment for nigerians (aka good governance).

You have got it quite wrong. We are used to the shambolic structure of Nigeria and cannot imagine that the structure could be more efficient and productive.
The UK practices a parliamentary system which is very different from the government Presidential system of the US. Also, the UK is a unitary state, while the US is federal.

The Nigerian system is closer to chaos than it is to any known political system on Earth. Everything about the Nigerian system negates itself, cancels out growth and punishes the citizen. We have no national philosophy that moulds the national psyche and determines the role of the citizen.
America practices a federal system based on philosophical tenets the ordinary citizen can identify with; freedom, liberty, and the American dream that anyone can aspire and become great through boundless opportunities. The UK's philosophy is based on the stiff upper lip, Queen and country and British Excellence. What philosophy is Nigeria based on? What is the definition of "Nigerian?" We have no national ideals. What can the average key into to feel a belonging to Nigeria, to feel appreciated and valued by their country? What is there to bind Nigerians as one unit in a quest for development? A country without a national philosophy, is a country without a plan.
In Nigeria our philosophy is, "anything goes;" we wait for a problem to develop, then patch it with cellotape or mud, only to wait for the next.

To give some examples of Nigeria's chaos, states and LG's were created, not based on their productivity, but by their population. In other words, all you need as a state or LG is too have a randy population to increase the share of the Abuja cake. Governors need not lift a finger, LG bosses need not turn up for work. It is institutionalised indolence and no country can ever develop from such a mess. To compound matters, the FG holds all the keys to the oil funds in a pyramid of patronage that naturally breeds corruption, easy money and an unwillingness to change the failed system.
Those who do not have direct access to oil funds are paid to keep quiet, the NASS with their huge wages and the common man with N65 per litre fuel. It is pure evil.
It goes without saying that neither Washington nor London funds states, counties, LG's or municipalities.

It is not enough to wish Nigeria well, we must all actively call for total restructuring from the ground; not the stone-headed, retrogressive subsidy "revolution" type, but a call for true federalism and a new citizen-state contract that will guarantee every man, woman an child a sense of belonging and the feeling that they are valued. We must call for an uprooting of the current chaotic system to be replaced by one which guarantee's regional autonomy, self-reliance, rewards for sweat and innovation; and one that requires that the federating units fund Abuja, instead of the other way round.
So in summary you and I both agree that nigeria has to change.

Beaf and gar3th should first agree on definition of terms before arguing. Each of them is correct on what each is supporting but they are not arguing on the same thing hence the disagreement.

Economy and govt revenue are not the same thing

Beaf is right that govt revenue is almost entirely dependent on oil sale but gar3th is talking about the whole economy which is by far larger than the oil sector and govt receipt.

It amuses me when people say Nigeria economy is not diversified. The economy is diversified, what needs to be diversified is the sources of foreign exchange which still remain oil.

If the economy is not diversified, every Nigerian will be in oil related business. Tell me how many igbo traders in Alaba whose equals that of states are doing oil related biz. Don't tell me they use oil forex to import otherwise how do Igbos successfully trade in countries without oil. Same goes for farmers and cattle rearers in other parts of the country.

Forex earnings is good but that is not the basis for diversified economy. If Nigeria economy is self sufficient (subject to economic limitation), not all Nigerians will be expert in Forex rates fluctuation monitoring as we have today.
Yes, I realized that, no need to spam and derail the thread, I'll end the argument.
PoliticsRe: Asari Dokubo Leads Port Harcourt Protest: Wants Sovereign National Conference by GAR3TH(m): 7:54am On Jan 18, 2012
Beaf:
The point is that Nigeria is currently totally reliant on oil, that is the argument we are having.
Diversifying the economy is a future dream.

The FG can never make money from tax, with the way it is currently structured (which is why I would have loved to learn why you think we are politicaly stable).
The FG is structured for exploitation, indolence and parasitism. It is no coincidence that we have spent most of our 51 years retrogressing, while nations of a similar age (eg Malaysia and Singapore) have since become developed. It is also no coincidence that Nigeria is corrupt.
It is an area that those like you who hate me are loathe to hear. Regardless, it is the truth and the truth is painful, most NLers haven't got any understanding about how Nigeria works and the fact that the entire system is terribly sick, dying and needs fundamental changes that are painful.
Their is nothing wrong with the democratic representative system we have now, its the same system used in the USA and many other progressive countries, the real problems are the moronic leaders we keep electing over and over again and thats what really needs to change. Nigeria can get no were without strong viable leaders who are corruption and mismanagement free. Leaders like fashola, chimes, amaechi, duke, Oshiomhole, obi. Leaders like those are the ones we should be electing and not the visionless fools who are in power today

the only other thing that is wrong with Nigeria is our administrative system, why do we have 36 states and 774 LGAs and tons of pointless political position when the same thing can be done with just 18 states and 300 LGAs. Its just sickening. if you want to then change the border layout, add ebonyi to enugu state, add anomie state to Anambra State but what ever you do dont create more. Creating more state means more bureaucracy, more political salaries, more corruption, more of the budget being spent of recurrent expenditures etc.

On the issue on taxation, the FG can make revanue from taxing, If states can do it why cant the fg? IGR accounts for about 60% of lagos state budget and is expected to grow as our economy grows and more people pay taxes. It won't be long before 80 then 90 then 95 percent of lagos state budget comes from IGR. So if lagos and other state governments can generate funds from taxes why cant the FG do the same, the same way that you pay federal, state, and local taxes in the USA and UK why cant it be done in nigeria, We have a growing diverse economy so why not?
PoliticsRe: Asari Dokubo Leads Port Harcourt Protest: Wants Sovereign National Conference by GAR3TH(m): 7:20am On Jan 18, 2012
And the only reason the FG, not the economy, but the FG relies on oil is because they do not tax. The FG DOES NOT RELY ON OIL, if oil ran out tomorrow they can easily switch to a tax code system, like the on in the USA and UK , and gain revenue that way because we have a large non oil dependent economy. The reason the fg uses oil is because they want to not because they have to. oil is an easy way of collecting revanue but its not the only way.

Beaf:
You are talking about GDP? lol!
Basically all of the FG's money comes from forex and 95% of that is from oil. There is no state in Nigeria that can survive without oil money from Abuja. So what is the difference between the FG's forex supply and the FG's revenue?

I quoted from CBN and you've countered that with quotes from the Vanguard and the Nation newspaper. Don't you think that is rather odd?

We have had stable elections for over ten years, though it doesn't mean we have good leadership, our political system is still strong. Second, what does killings in the north or resource control have to do with a stable political system, that has to do with security and mismanagement. Just because you keep voting the same corrupt leaders into office doesn't mean that the political system is unstable. We have had countless election for the pass ten years in federal, state, and lg offices with no interruption. The system is stable but the politicians are moronic. You have the right to vote, the right to protest and the right to hold your leader accountable for their actions, so how is the system unstable. Isn't this the same nigeria that other countries come to to solve their own political problems, if nigeria had an unstable political system why would they come? I think people need to get this oil syndrome out of their heads because their are many other sectors that make up the bulk of nigeria's economy. How can you say that oil, which only makes up 14% of our GDP, makes us a banana republic?

IGR makes up about 60% of Lagos state budget, how can you say that they fully depend on oil? Fact remains that yes oil does make up the bulk of nigeria's government revenue, but if oil finishes tomorrow there are other sectors in the economy that they can easily tax to make up for the lost funds

Na wa Oh!!! I think the call for resource control must be heard this year and SNC must be held this 2012 . Can you imagine unproductive states such as Oyo , Ogun , Ondo , Borno , Adamawa , Kano and Nassarawa  having MORE GDP than Oil rich areas such as Bayelsa , Abia , Akwa ibom , Imo . Hmmm wonders shall never end in this country . Asari abeg carry on . Fire burn all of them wen no want make we occupy our natural resources by ourselves.
No offense but how old are you? An educated adult wouldn't be making such id!otic statements. for your information oil only account for 14% of nigeria's GDP, while agriculture accounts for more than 26% of nigeria's gdp and other sectors account for the remaining percentage. Nigeria is not a Banana republic, our economy does not rely on oil. So i scratch my head every time i see comments like these. No one depends on the Niger delta, there are other economic activities in the country other than oil that can be tax.

Secondly, This is for all those who constantly group themselves with oil producing state, get over it. If Nigeria was to split I can assure you that either two countries will emerge, a north or a south, or 250 new nations will emerge, those are the only options. Why are you guys complaining that the British just group us together without a care in the world yet you do the exact same thing by drawing ludicrous maps and making absurd statement by grouping ethnicity that don't want to be with you. I have to disagree with that statement, The Eastern delta has the most followed by the western delta. Though there are oil fields in "igboland", its less than 1/5th off nigeria's onshore oilfields. And mind you that 1/3rd of nigeria oil comes from offshore deepwater rigs. so in reality its really about 1/15th if you include deep water oil.

WHAT measure has LAGOS state taken to relieve the poor people suffering considering the fact that they consume more volume of this subsidized pms
Lagos has the largest public transit system in West africa and as a matter of fact as of august of 2011 lagos state has approved plans to increase its LAGBUS transit system by 10,000 more buses. @pointless debate, I still dont get why people are saying resource control? Those states that produce oil, especially those in the delta, receive enough funds from allocation that they can develop, nuke and develop themselves again. The problem is their governors, pointless administrative systems which mismanage those funds.

Second The oil and gas field in igbo land are pointless and wont have a real economic impact considering the population of igboland (30 million). So for those who say igboland can survive on their own should think twice. yes there is oil but its scarce when you compare it to igbolands population.

With that said My original response was to why the buses will most likely be from abroad, Because its cheaper and faster. But what I said does not represent my view. Like i said before i was only stating facts and the truth. My personal view is that the fg should patronize the local industries and inpower the people.
PoliticsRe: How Many Of The Fg's 1600 New Buses Are Made In Nigeria by GAR3TH(m): 7:52pm On Jan 07, 2012
To answer your question, most likely none. Their are no companies in nigeria that manufacture buses. Yes I know there is innoson but they import their parts from abroad and ASSEMBLE them in nigeria. Which means buying buses from innoson is more expensive than buying from abroad. the second reason why I doubt the buses will be made in nigeria is, Innoson does not have the capabilities to manufacture assemble 1600 buses in such a short period of time.
PoliticsRe: Why Are There No Subsidy Protests In The SE/SS Oil Producing States? by GAR3TH(m): 2:29am On Jan 06, 2012

@ sheygay
Go and read your post, it does 't make sense.

some urchins in this tread are accusing SE/SS of tribalism. lets look at it objectively.

they are bombing and protesting to destroy GEJ administration because he is not from the north and he is not a Muslim. this is the height of tribalism brothers.
now they want to hide under subsidy, whereas their true intention
is to ruin this administration. They ruled for almost 40yrs and all they left behind was massive corruption,Economic and infrastructural decay.
NOW SOME ALMEJERIS ARE SUDDENLY BECOMING PATRIOTIC

we in SE/SS say no, give him chance to carry out his economic transformation,  Truly no leader takes two yrs to achieve any meaningful progress.

PLEASE BROTHERS, NO PROTEST IN SE AND SS
It might be that or it might be because the removal of fuel subsidy will hurt all nigerians financially. It doesn't matter if you voted for GEJ or not the protestors are doing their civic responsibility of holding their leaders accountable for their actions. It has nothing to do with tribalism and only an Id!ot will connect the protest to tribalism.

This is what is wrong with nigeria, that people are so drawn to "winning" that people would live in hell fire just so there candidate "wins". That they will just blindly follow what ever their candidate does just because he's from their area / party. That is what separates  develop America from the 3rd world that is Nigeria. President Obama, bush, clinton etc all got tasks and pressured from both their opposition and their own party and constituents so that they, the president, does whats right for the country. But in Nigeria we have yet to see PDP members talk against the removal of fuel subsidies or even niger deltans in bayelsa protest against the removal of fuel subsidy just because GEJ is in power. That is why nigeria will never develop because some will just turn a blind eye, even if it means they will suffer, just so their candidate "wins".

I'm for the removal of fuel subsidy but i'm proud that some nigerians are out there voicing their own opinions.
In the uk, the the people don't have to pay school fees for young children and they have free medical services we don't have that over here so don't compare nigeria to uk
I have to diagree with this statement because they do pay for school and medical services. the average UK citizen pays about 25% of their salaries towards taxes. some people, based on income and progression taxes, pay as much as 40 % of their income toward taxes. Nothing is free, they pay for everything you see through their tax system. Nigerian tax just cant compare.
