Efforts by the Federal Government to improve power supply have received a major blow as generation has dropped by 1,000 megawatts owing to “sabotage leak” at Shell-operated Utorogun Gas Plant, a major gas source for the power generating stations.


The development has thrown Lagos State into almost complete darkness as electricity supply to the state, which hovers around 700 megawatts under normal situation, dropped drastically last night, while Abeokuta was also adversely affected.


Managing Director of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Mr. Hussein Labo, could not be reached over the situation but a source at PHCN attributed the problem to inadequate supply from the transmission station.


“They should exonerate the Distribution Zones this time because we don’t have. If we have, we will give but we don’t have now. So, it is not a distribution problem,” said the source at one of the distribution zones.
The Utorogun Gas Plant located in Ughelli, Delta State, and Chevron’s Escravos Gas Plant are the main sources of gas supply to the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which supplies gas to the PHCN’s gas-fired plants across the country.


The gas plant, which is a joint venture between Shell, NNPC, Total and Eni SpA (Agip), also supplies gas to industrial users. THISDAY gathered last night that there was sharp drop in gas supply to Egbin Power Station, the biggest power-generating station in the country. Before the latest incident, Egbin was generating 1,080 megawatts of electricity.


A source at the station said the situation was because of a problem at Utorogun, which disrupted gas supply to the plant.


It was learnt that Shell discovered “leaks caused by saboteurs stealing condensates from the Utorogun gas plant”, a development which affected gas supply from the plant. Shell has not officially reacted to the development, but unofficial source at the company confirmed the incident, saying the shutdown would last for only 48 hours for repairs to be carried out on the damaged gas pipeline.


NNPC had facilitated the maximisation of gas production from the NNPC/ Chevron JV facility. Under the arrangement, Chevron increased its gas production from 180 million standard cubic feet per day to 200mscf/d while gas production at the Pan Ocean Oil Corporation Nigeria Limited facility surged to 65mscf/d.
Power generation had hovered around 3,500mw, before it peaked at 3,800mw following ongoing rehabilitation of some existing power plants.

While I agree with some part of your post, I disagree on the part where you defined "development". Development on a general scale of things are efforts that improve in people "Standard of living" and some off the things you listed certainly doesn't fit the bill. To consider economic development, you have to consider infrastructure (Road network accessibility, etc ), employment (income distribution ), GDP competitiveness (goods production and services offered), health and environment sustainability (clean, neat environment, et al). These are the major core of development, what makes standard of living improved. There are standards and stages of development as economics taught us; there's no city with 100% economic balance, I think it's unfair to assert that there isn't development going on in these cities.


Like most have testified, they have good (maybe not perfect) infrastructure that include good road networks which is easily accessible by car, foot, or bike or bicycle. Employment and income distribution is fair amongst earners based upon what the standard is although there might be a lil disparity based upon the cost of living. Also, these cities boast of development of their own, they have small business, they boast of production, manufacturing, (raw material and labor or human capital), which is increasing GDP. These states have taken upon themselves to be environmental friendly and conscious, if the environment is clean or perhaps a good portion is clean, it means that literacy level amongst people are increasing, people are taking a different approach and pattern to care for their environment.


Brother to sum it all up, it might NOT BE what you're defining as developed, but at least they are on the right path to success. @OP, I don't know but I guess I'm amazed by responses I see on here; this certainly means that changes are here but certainly, we are improving. As for the people insulting, yall need to quit it, there really isn't any need to rain abuses just because you don't like what is being said or simply biased.

The viability depends on the route. Simple.

Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi has explained that the State was not buying a new aircraft but only trading in the old aircraft for a new one for safety reasons.
Amaechi was reacting to statements credited to the Governorship Candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2011 elections in Rivers State, Dr. Abiye Sekibo alleging that the Amaechi administration is corrupt owing to the approval by the Rivers State House of Assembly for the Governor to buy a new aircraft.

In a special radio interview and phone-in programme in Port Harcourt, Tuesday, Amaechi said the size of the old plane is not compliant to the current weather conditions and could be dangerous.
“We are not just buying a new plane, we are trading in the old one for something new and I don’t see anything wrong with that”, he said.

Also at a parley with the Director General and Staff of the Security and Exchange Commission in Port Harcourt Tuesday, Amaechi said the old aircraft was struck by lightning and has become unsafe.

According to him, “If you look at the size of the plane and the current climatic conditions when you fly, you will see how dangerous it is for us to fly in that small sized plane. We are not even buying a very large plane; we are trading it for an improved version.
“Out of three, we have sold one to Cross River State at 9 million dollars and we are using the money to build a minimum of 10 Primary Schools. I didn’t see the need to have two aircrafts flying the Governor, that’s why we sold one.”
He assured the people of the state that he would not lead a corrupt administration but said he would not risk his life with an old aircraft because he was avoiding criticism.

On the status of the State’s internally generated revenue, Amaechi said that contrary to Sekibo’s claims that the State has spent 1 trillion naira so far, “We got 45 billion naira this July and that is because from January to June, the Federal Government was paying us half of our funds so they paid us arrears.

   “He (Abiye Sekibo) started talking about 1 trillion naira since January, that means that he did not get his facts right. Tell him that before a governorship candidate should speak, he should get his people to get data, the data is in the public domain. By the time he was speaking 1 trillion naira, we had done just 800 billion.

“We promised this State that we will not be reckless, we will be responsible with their funds and we will be prudent.”
The governor blamed the rains for the slow pace of work on construction sites and appealed to Rivers people to exercise more patience as bad roads would not just be repaired but overhauled for better maintenance.

Correction: there was never an argument. That the AVERAGE quoted on that site is at 250k DOES NOT remove from the fact that you can get a good house in Chicago for about 130K. A good condo in downtown chicago is available for 130K and above, even till today. If you doubt it, all you need do is a simple good search. Heck, TRULIA.com is a good place to start. Simple!

My Replies to your post on NY was as a result of you trying to PRETEND it is a SUDDENLY a COMPETITION between NY and Chicago-and-the-rest-of-America simply because I made to tell the @OP that it is NOT BY FORCE TO LIVE IN NY if he/she cannot afford it.

I have resided in NY myself an I can tell you that there are quite a couple other cities -- lower cost of living too--- that offer just as much as NY offers you there.

WOW !!! NY Offers millions more jobs opportunities than other parts of the country? Are you serious? May I ask what you base this claim on? WOW  . . . 

New York is the headquarters for most of America's top businesses. Its America's economic heart, The same way their are more job opportunities in Lagos than in port harcourt.

About New Yorkers being able to afford the homes they live in, I suggest you go play that tune to the @OP who seems to DISAGREE with you since his complaint, which you pretended you AGREED with in the beginning, is about NY being TOO EXPENSIVE him him/her to afford. Or wait, are we to assume that everyone who complains of the high cost of living, even in NY city, is not a new yorker?

I tell you the home is only a couple of minutes, actually 3 miles from downtown and you ask me if it is bad? Even condos downtown ( in the highrise buildings sell for about 100K up, again, depending on what you want, and you are asking me if it is bad? Kai!!

Why would you live in a place where you know you are unable to afford? This is A MENTALITY problem and not an america problem. You do not move to Silicon Valley and then start to whine that houses there are expensive when you know it is above your means. It is COMMON SENSE!!!

There are houses in Albany NY for about $130 K if it is by force that you live in NY, but if you must live in NY, then SHUT UP and stop complaining because it makes no sense to. Living in NY city comes with the NY city price tag!! No be by force that you live with the Nigerians in NY. There are Nigerians in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama, Nebraska etc.

Trying to throw America under the bus, citing some of the, for lack of a better word, MISERABLE CHOICES some people make, ain't gonna cut it. And yes, many Nigerians make these mistakes . . . living in cities they cannot afford and thinking THE MAN is the problem.

Ordinary 4 bedroom? Even here in Chicago, you can get one of those for about $130,000 and I am talking only a couple of minutes from downtown. You can even get a good house in some states for about $30,000 or more. Na wa ooo!! Must everyone own a $500,000 how now, to live in america.
