This is the most ignorant statement I have ever seen on social media! Barbers and carpenters are doing dirty work?? Barbers that have their own cars? Carpenters have built houses in Ikorodu, Somolu, Agege and Mowe?? Have you not heard of celebrity barbers in the states whose clients include sportsmen and celebrities? I don't blame you. I blame the Nigerian education system that programs people into believing that only those with certificates are the creme of society while those with handy work are "undesirable". That's why many of you look down on Uber/Bolt drivers who are actually doing better than most of you and are graduates as well.

Do you know how much plumbers, painter and carpenters make in the UK & other developed countries?A lot of those Diasporians you lots fawn over, work in the informal sector such as bricklaying, retail, fast food joints, construction work and taxi driving. Like I said, it's not your fault, it lack of exposure.

The chances of the two tribes coming together for a common cause is slim and politicians like it that way. Yeah, it's a massive stereotype that you have to be a graduate of the Oxbridge schools in order to make it to the top in the UK. It's not always true though. There are exceptions though. Kemi Badenoch studied at Sussex and Birkbeck (University of London), Alok Sharma studied at the University of Salford and Priti Patel (University of Keele). Kwasi Kwarteng (the previous Chancellor of the Exchequer) studied in Cambridge and his father was a GP. Apart from costs, what hinders the growth of black politicians in the UK is institutional racism and inability to master the system. Our Asian brothers understand politics. Just look at it, they have penetrated the Conservative Party in massive numbers. Blacks have been voting for Labour for donkey years with nothing to show for it!

As for the sectors that black brits congregate the most, it's hard to say as blacks are scattered in every sector in the UK (Finance, real estate, construction, etc). Do you mean upper middle class whites or upper middle class blacks? I also agree that "Asian communities" in the UK needs to be distinguished. 80% of British Asians are from South Asia of which Indians constitute the majority. Indians are the most successful out of all of them (obviously) followed by the Chinese. Pakistanis are in the middle (not that successful but not that poor). Afghans,Iraqis, Syrians and some Bangladeshi are at the bottom of the social ladder for Asians in the UK.

Yes, most black brits come from different nationalities, regions and ethnicities. As a result of these differences, there's so much infighting amongst the black community (black africans v black carribbeans, light skin v dark skin, somalians v other blacks). Big problem. Even the Nigerian community is not united. However, this is not an excuse. The Asian community is very diverse as well and they are running things.

Do you know why the Indian community is so successful in the UK? They studied the system and understood that the only way to gain power is to be like them. They sent their children to the most expensive boarding schools and networked with the creme de la creme. They knew that if you wanted to become a successful politician in the UK, you have to go Cambridge or Oxford. They succeeded in business by strategically living in areas dominated by other Asians (Bradford, Leicester, Bolton, Birmingham). With that comes the corner shops, restaurants, law firms, real estate agencies, car dealers, Kebab shops etc all run by them . With that kind of strategy, why won't an Asian become a billionaire before blacks?? Mo Ibrahim had to think outside the box in order to become a billionaire in the UK. He knew that he couldn't rely on the black community in the UK if he wanted to become rich.

You are very correct with your assertion. I would add that the greatest problem facing the black community in the UK is lack of unity. No sense of communal bond. We see each other as 'competition' that needs to be eliminated. Always want to be the top dog in the community. Just look at black professionals. We have associations for black lawyers, doctors and co but what do they do? Nothing. Just talk, Asians, especially Indians, are very cooperative with each other. They have the Immigration sector on lockdown. They are gradually taking over the Financial sector. 98% of corner shops in the UK are owned by Asians. Why can't black brits hack into that?

As bad as the UK is, it is easier for blacks to become richer there than in any other European country because of the population of blacks living there (the largest in Europe), the number of educated blacks, the language and established colonial ties. It's the lack of unity and orientation of black brits that is a stumbling block, After all, the richest black people in Europe are based in the UK.

Yes, most of his wealth came from Africa but he started his business in the UK. The reason why Black Africans/Carribbeans aren't as successful as their Asians counterparts in the UK is due to various factors such as a lack of support system that our Asian counterparts in the UK enjoy and the inability of black brits to think outside the box and hack the financial system to our advantage. The Asian community in the UK, for the most part, is very united.

OP, here are the following reasons why most wealthy Nigerians prefer to live in Nigeria as opposed to living abroad.

Firstly, most rich people of any country (especially developing countries) prefer to live in their country of origin as that is their base, their source of wealth and influence.

Secondly, most of them are always traveling abroad, so they are not in Nigeria 24/7. Tony Elumelu for example, is always traveling abroad for one engagement or another. Otedola frequently travels back and forth between London and Lagos.

Thirdly, most wealthy Nigerians would be subjected to tax in the west so they prefer to be based in Nigeria where they can easily game the system and preserve their wealth.

Fourthly, many wealthy people cannot afford to leave the running of their businesses to their subordinates. We Nigerians do not trust ourselves. Nigerian businesses have not grown to the level where the founder and CEO can afford distance himself from the day to day running of the business. Most business men own a majority of shares of their own companies.

Fifthly, majority of businesses in Nigeria are based on connections and influence. Most wealthy Nigerians need to maintain their contacts and influence by being physically present in the country. They have no connections abroad.

Lastly, as many people in this forum have stated, wealthy Nigerians can get away with so many things in Nigeria that they can never do abroad. They can never be taken to court in Nigeria as the matter will die a natural death. They can rape/abuse many women and get away with it. They can destroy people's properties without any consequences. The list goes on.

Gerrard, I respect you a lot but that is not true. Have you ever heard of Mo Ibrahim? He's the richest black man in the UK from Sudan. As of last year, he was worth $1billion. He was the owner of CELTEL. He also has a popular foundation in Africa called the Mo Ibrahim foundation. Dude is not that famous due to the fact that he is low key. The man was in the Sunday Times Rich list for years (that should tell you that i have lived in the system for a while and cannot lie). Google him.

Thank you for exposing that guy. So the woman migrated to Canada with the wrong visa and expects to get a job? We Immigration lawyers have mentioned time and time again that if you must JAPA, you must make a thorough research of the country you want to migrate to, their immigration laws, their language, the job market and your chances of securing citizenship. So many Nigerians are too lazy to do a simple research and when things don't work out for them, they come online and rant.

My sister Canada is not over hyped, those that came in as Permanent residents or other types of residence permit are living their lives happily.

Secondly, In developed countries If you're not a Medical Doctor, Nurse, Pharmacist, IT Professional, Radiographer, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Welder, Carpenter, Truck Driver, Certified and Experienced Engineer, Highly Skilled Sports Professional etc
You will only be left with survival jobs like factory work, cleaning, construction laborer, cemetery attendants, waiter/waitress etc. But if you have a residence permit you can learn a relevant skill so that you take up a professional job.

Nigerians don't like to publicly take responsibility for their actions or inactions She probably entered with a wrong Visa or is not skilled in any of the above mentioned professions.

I know hundreds of people that migrated to Canada and are living happily, but going abroad is not for everyone actually, if you don't have what it takes to thrive there, just remain in Naija.

Don't mind them! Nigerians in the Diaspora are broke yet they are the country's biggest financial lifeline after oil & gas! Many of them are begging those 'broke' diasporans for money every day. Some of them even depend on them for financial support! Meanwhile, many Nigerians in Nigeria cannot even afford a flight ticket to their home states for Christmas.

That is simply because there are more Nigerians abroad than most african countries bar North Africans and Somalians. Nigeria is the most populous black nation on Earth, as such, there are Nigerians in every corner of the globe just like the Chinese and Indians. Lastly, majority of the Nigerians abroad were part of the middle class in Nigeria and as such were more educated, industrious and affluent. That is why they can afford to remit more money to their home country compared to their counterparts in other African countries.

Depends on what you mean by the word "illiterate".Any who can read, write and is educated up to secondary school level is not an illiterate. There are a lot of university 'graduates' in Nigeria who cannot string more than two sentences together. Many of them can't even sign their own name! Your ability to read, write and have a cognitive reasoning faculty defines your level of education. That's not to say that I would date a secondary school leaver. The way I see it, as a person, the individual you date/marry is a reflection of the kind of person you are and the type of people you surround yourself with. It is very difficult (not impossible) for an Ivy league school graduate or an oxbridge graduate to date a secondary school dropout or a village girl based on their level of education, exposure and the caliber of people they surround themselves with.

I agree. It's not advisable for people with a lot of assets in Nigeria to just JAPA. Also, people with businesses should encourage their children to spend more time in Nigeria as a lot of their heirs end up abandoning the family business as they have been out of the country for too long. Like I said previously, I don't blame people (including the upper middle class) for leaving. Nigeria is a very tough country to survive even with money. I practice in Lagos. Shuttle between Europe and Nigeria when I can.

I agree that it is a big risk for people with a career to sacrifice everything in the name of Japa and as an Immigration lawyer, I have advised clients to think clearly before Japaing. However, the middle and upper middle career oriented are leaving the country not because of money but because of the quality of living in the country. No matter how one disguises it, the quality of living in Nigeria is very low. No light, no decent water, no good roads and a non-existent educational sector. The middle class have looked at the aforementioned issues and have concluded that Nigeria is not a suitable environment to raise their children.

As for those who are at an advanced age, they shouldn't try it. Immigration is a young person's hustle. If you read some of my posts on this forum, I have specifically stated the ideal age to leave the country.There's a reason why the pensioners of those advanced countries retire at a cheaper jurisdiction.

I absolutely agreed with all you said but having lived abroad for 10 years, I still believed some people are not good candidates to Japa. First, people who are established in Nigeria. Why would someone who have a career, stable job and a house sell everything and move abroad? They are right about quadrupling their income but when you factor tax and bills, they will end up at ground zero at the end of the month. The second type of people that should NEVER try Japa are people who are advance in age. Why should a retired person take his gratitude, sell his house and move to US thinking miracles who somehow happen? I know a very distant cousin who sell his property, add his pension and moved to US in his late 60's. He has stroke and dementia and still has to work cos he has not work long enough to qualify for social security income and neither is he a citizen. Older people, don't try it. You will definitely regret it.
Younger, unemployed, underemployed should by all means leave Niaja for real. The situation is hopeless back home and it can't get worse as long as you do not Japa to countries that are worse off compare to Nigeria. Do your research, invest time and plan before you move is always my advice.

I spent a quarter of my life abroad before moving back to Nigeria so i know the downsides of living in a white man's country. However, you do not understand why Nigerians are desperate to leave the country by any means necessary as you don't live in Nigeria and you aren't experiencing the HELL so many people are going through in this country. So many people are disillusioned with the state of the country. We are talking about a country that is only designed for only the rich to thrive. The poor do not have any chance. That is why prostitution, yahoo, drugs, rituals and fraud have become the norm.

A lot of young people are disenfranchised with the system. The middle class has been wiped out. You are either rich or poor. Education has now become the right for only the rich. Many individuals have seen their standard of living drop in by 80% in the past 10 years. The list of problems is endless. I also assume that you probably have a second passport so you don't understand what the average Nigerian goes through when they travel abroad for different reasons. Just come and experience living in Nigeria for 3 months. Then you will understand why people want to Japa by force.

They told their boys to queue for them until it was their turn . One Embassy official came out and announced that if you are not directly applying for a visa, they will not allow you in. See big men in their agbada rush out of their cars to join the queue . U.S. Embassy no send anyone. It's just that internet and social media has created more awareness about what happens in the U.S. Embassy.

OP, if you listen to what she said, she's not a practicing lawyer. Just because you were called to the bar does not mean that you have to practice law. Falz was called to the bar but he doesn't practice law and his lifestyle is different from your average lawyer. Is he in breach of LPPC rules? The OP is a real JJC! The U.S. Embassy has always been like this lol. Getting an American visa is a like playing the lottery.The US no send anybody. I remember in 2000, the US Embassy told big men who were sitting in their cars to queue otherwise they would not be allowed inside the Embassy. There was so many visa rejections even then.

2 of my friends back in the early 2000s got the visas with the embassy staff not even checking any doc they brought with them. One landed in the US with $5 and the other $10. Of course they never returned to Nigeria and are both citizens now. Meanwhile during that period, several Nigerian senators where denied visiting visas.

OP, my advice to you is to work towards becoming an English Translator in Asia or Latin America. Don't waste your money on a Master's program that may not guarantee you a job overseas. In today's world, skills matter more than degrees. Degrees are a mere formality to show that you are "educated". Turn your degree into a skill. Look for international organizations that are in need of English translators. Hell, you can use part of that money to learn another language that will give you an edge in the international job market. Think outside the box.

When I say that Nigerian men are the biggest SIMPS in Africa, people think that I am exaggerating and hating my own gender and countrymen. As far as I am concerned, if you don't have at least two different streams of income, you shouldn't bother getting married. I don't comment on political issues online but if workers in multinational companies like Shell can be complaining about declining standards of living, then we have a serious problem. They are among the highest paid workers in Nigeria. Only NNPC and a few other organizations pay higher wages than Shell as far as Nigeria is concerned.

Let me tell you all the blunt reality of things: The policies of this administration and its predecessor has not only decimated the middle class but now many Nigerians have now been humbled economically. Many top shots have realized that they are not as rich as they thought they are. The supposed "middle class" have been living a middle class lifestyle on a working class salary. The only people who have managed to prosper in the past couple of years are forex traders, politicians, SANS with political affiliations, those who are doing business internationally and government contractors. Everybody else is feeling the heat. Social media has deceived people that many Nigerians are balling. Many are living a lie.
