This is my grouse with the average Nigerian. Poor and very arrogant. We make so much noise for no reason. Nigerians looove to overestimate their importance in global affairs/politics.

I know! Nigerians don't understand that they are being ripped off big time. My last trip to New York from London (2018), my return ticket was about $400. It cost that much because I bought my ticket at the last minute. I didn't even carry my Nigerian passport as I am part of the visa waiver program . I did my ESTA two days before my trip. Meanwhile, Nigerians in Nigeria would go through hell just to get an interview with the U.S. Embassy and there is a high chance that they may be rejected. Once you succeed in acquiring said visa, you are only given 5 years. It was previously 3 years . Yet, you see the so-called "big boys and girls" bragging about acquiring a 5 year visa while their counterparts in Namibia are issued a 10 year visa. S**t, even Indians, Jordanians and Kazaks are issued 10 year U.S. visas. Nigeria is not rated in the international community.

I had a conversation with pansophist, Tenzagent and Gerrard a few days ago about the ease of traveling within the West/developed world and the poor state of the Nigerian passport. As an Immigration lawyer, I help clients to process their documents and give them immigration advice. What got to me is that as a Nigerian, you need to have a certain amount of money just to get a visa... Take the British High Commission for example. You need to show proof of a decent bank account for the pass 6 months in order for them to process your visa. In most embassies, you need to show proof that you have good "ties" to your country. Just think about it. You need to prove that you are very comfortable in order to obtain a visa.

Meanwhile, Freddy based in Ipswich, England, with no money in his account, can travel to Spain or Morocco with only his passport and the total price for a return ticket is 100 pounds . Even better, Pierre the security guard in Marseille, can decide to travel to Germany, Austria, Italy and Spain with only his ID card and the total cost of the trip, if he books on time, would be nothing more than 300 Euros . Meanwhile, Wale, a chartered accountant based in Lagos, would have to have at least N3million in his bank account in order to get a visa and a decent flight ticket to that same Spain . Just think about it. Nigerians are taking for mugs by both our fellow Nigerians and the international community.

As yourself why a British Airways flight ticket from London to Lagos costs about $2000 for a six hour flight while a flight ticket from London to New York is about $600 if you book in advance. A flight ticket from Lagos to London is the same amount as a flight ticket from London to Johannesburg. This is despite the fact that a flight from London to Jo'berg is 10 hours.

So when I see Nigerians brag that all you need is money to enjoy Nigeria. If you need to be rich just to enjoy the basics of life then you live in a third world country. If you need to be very comfortable in order to travel for holiday, then it says a lot about your country.

Omo, no be my fault. my folks were always intentional of me studying in the UK. All their friends kids studied there. Most of my extended family members live there. I moved there immediately after secondary school in the early 2000s and was there for 13 years. Suffice to say, traveling within Europe is no longer an issue. Although, I envy you lots that studied in the Euro zone. You guys were balling (still balling ). Nigerians living in Nigeria wouldn't understand .

Travelling in Europe is the cheapest thing next to water. Even in my most broke state, I still travel as a poor student.

I have spent less than 100 euros on a weekend holiday. And that includes flights, accommodation, flexing, and return ticket home

And that was when 1usd was about 250 to a naira. Can you beat that?

Europe is sweet

When I was in uni in the UK, many European students would travel to their home countries every weekend. Especially Polish people. Those guys would travel to Poland every weekend and they don't have much in their account. In fact, many of these Eastern Europeans were collecting benefits in the UK and would spend their benefit allowance in their home countries . Labour Government was wild. How many upper middle class Nigerians can do that?

Have you not observed that so many businesses are on the verge of collapse due to the exchange rate and cost of doing business in Nigeria? Nigeria is an option for people who aren't doing well in the very competitive western world. We should focus more on home-players who are hungry and have no plan "B" if things go south.

It is lucrative BUT many of us are struggling to get clients due to the fact that Immigration lawyers aren't well known in this country. Majority of Nigerians who intend to Japa, would rather consult a travel agent than a lawyer who is knowledgeable about immigration laws. They want someone who will guarantee them a quick result. As a lawyer, you are under an obligation to tell your client the truth. Agents, on the other hand, aren't under such obligations and tell their clients what they want to hear.

As for Henley and Partners, those guys are making a killing. I told my friends many years ago that with the way the Nigerian passport is crashing, it's only a matter of time before Henley & Partners move in as many rich Nigerians would be forced to get a second passport. That is the elite's version of JAPA. With a population of over 200 million people, Nigeria is a market that Henley & firms cannot ignore. There are many Nigerians with raw cash that can afford those passports. It's the masses I pity the most. They don't understand what's coming.

Nigeria has happened to them. That's why. Japa is now very expensive. You need at least N15million to Japa to the west. Not only that, many countries are tightening their immigration rules. The UK and Canada (the two biggest recipients of international students from Nigeria) have implemented measures to restrict the number of international students coming to their respective countries. France, Holland and many EU countries have also tightened their borders. Even South Korea is reducing it's intake of international students. This is the worst time for Nigerians to Japa. The anti-Japa crew know this and have gleefully decided to keep quiet. It's a field day for us immigration lawyers. Best of luck to all those intending to emigrate. It's not easy at all. In my time it was easier (early 2000s). Mad respect to parents who can send their offspring abroad for further education. Not easy at all.

Man, Nigerians are some of the most frustrated people on the planet! A guy decides to open a thread documenting his migration history to another country and all people can do is pour vitroi and mock him! You lots are so ignorant that a simple research would have shown you that Chile is the most developed country in South America and one of the most developed in Latin America. Nigerians are ignorant about many countries outside the west that they don't know that SOME of these Latin American countries are superior to any country in Africa.

That's not even the issue. If you lots had been following this young man's post/threads over the past few years, you would know that he's using Chile as a stepping stone to the U.S./Canada. He can't afford to waste millions of naira in Europe with nothing to show for it. This is just common sense. I am not crazy about these Latin American countries as they are political unstable but as an immigration lawyer, i have done my research and realized that these countries have a very strong passport. A strong passport can easily facilitate emigration to the west without spending so much money on tuition fees/ work visas in the west only for you to end up in Nigeria with nothing to show for it. Man, you lots really deserve your politicians.

That is true. I had that same conversation with a female friend 3 days ago. Women who make more money than their spouses/boyfriends tend to be more domineering. There are exceptions though such as Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Alakija, Bola Shagaya etc. However, my point still remains that our mentality of being providers tends to attract gold diggers and liabilities not only from Nigeria but other parts of the world.

I have said it on numerous occasions that Nigerian men are natural SIMPS. They are conditioned to spend on women without thinking. Nigerian men have zero standards and will go for women who wouldn't look at them if their situation was in reverse. That "provider" mentality has messed up a lot of men in this country and is the reason why they die before their time.

OP, it depends on various factors such as your travel history and finances. Getting a U.S. visa has always been about luck. Canada has become more stringent since so many Nigerians are migrating to their country. Brazil and Mexico are easier as not too many Nigerians visit those countries. Finance plays a big part in birth tourism. Do you have the finances to cover having a child in Canada/US?

Like Tenza and Gerrard have suggested, it would be wiser to have your child in either Brazil/Mexico. In Brazil, the parents of a child born there become permanent residents within 2 years. The cost of having a child there is cheaper than Canada/U.S. A Brazilian passport grants it's citizens visa-free access to 173 countries including Europe and Latin America. Brazilians have freedom of movement to live and work in Portugal. Mexico is also good as Brazil. Mexican citizens have visa free access to 165 countries including Canada, Europe and Japan. Mexican citizens are also entitled to Spanish citizenship after two years of residency. As a Mexican citizen, you or your child will be eligible for TN status which allows citizens of Canada and Mexico to work in America under specific professions. If I were you, I would have my child in Brazil/Mexico before Nigerians become aware of the advantages of going to those countries.

Which of these countries are very likely to offer one a visa smoothly without hassles to birth a child? I am aware Canada has added to her rules thereby making them very stringent to meet. Likewise the USA. But, we are still willing to try despite the stringent requirements (last we checked). We are looking at either Brazil or Mexico presently and hoping that they grant us a visa. Thing is, the back and forth has been very exhausting inclusive of the hefty financial commitments. But, we still have our minds and eyes on Canada and the US especially Canada if there are easier ways to help us forge through with ease.

If there are other countries we can try that you know of that do not have "too much" stringent requirements and will offer citizenship (with strong values) by birth, please, kindly state them. It would interest me to know. So, do kindly share. Thanks.

This is gas lighting at it's finest.So people should cancel their dreams/ambitions because of their parents? What about those whose parents live in the village while they reside in the city? What should they do ? They should abandon their hustle in the city in order to take care of their parents? There are many people who's parents live in a different state from them. Should they leave what they are doing in the state they are based in just to care for their parents? It is very important to take care of your parents but your own survival should come first. You cannot be hungry and then have the strength to feed another human being whilst having an empty stomach. It's just human nature.

Bros, I was about to say the same thing. Most of them complain about Nigeria's problems but are not willing to make a conscious effort to change their behaviour. A lot of them are so used to the mediocrity in Nigeria that once they travel abroad, they can't cope living in a functional society as it's alien to them. Hence why so many of them are on social media ranting about how tough life is abroad.

The "Anti-Japa" crew are just a bunch of deluded idealists who are detached from the realities of living in Nigeria. Most of them lack exposure and enlightenment. Like it's that easy to set up a business in Nigeria. To them N1 million is big money that can do multiple things while to some of us that have seen money and converted money know that N1 million today is not what it was 10/15 years ago due to inflation and other factors. As long we import everything including toothpick, businesses in this country will always be subjected to external factors. People are gradually waking up lol. It so funny when I read numerous posts on this forum about setting up a business in Nigeria. "Don't JAPA, set up a business in Nigeria", "stop working for people and be self-employed", "with N1 million, you can set up any business in Nigeria". Like it's that easy. If it was that easy to set up a business in this country, many multinationals would not be relocating their offices to Ghana and other African countries. The business environment in Nigeria is one of the harshest in the world and only the strong can survive.

The money you pay for diesel, rent, importation, transportation of goods, tax and bribes has killed so many SMES in this country. On top of that, the banks don't give favorable grants/loans to small businesses. As it stands now, if your business is not a necessity like food, water and other essential products, your business will struggle because many people are cutting costs. Even the elites are reducing their expenses.

You have said all I wanted to say. Nigerians are the most gullible people on earth. These politicians already have a plan b if Nigeria doesn't work for them but you see those ones defending them due to tribalism, religious intolerance and politics? They are the biggest losers. Many of them don't even have a passport! I wrote an article on the very forum earlier this year about the need to get a second passport and I was insulted. Nigerians don't like the truth and worship their oppressors. As for that guy that you responded to, ignore him. He's a well-known anti-japa supporter on this forum who has a British passport. Tell him to renounce his British citizenship let us see something.

OP, the reason why Nigerian girls in the Diaspora are skeptical about dating a Nigerian man without papers is due to the past reputation of Nigerian men marrying women for papers, impregnating them and dumping them once they have their documents. The men, in most cases, have wives/girlfriends back home. Non-Nigerian women are more open about it because they are more open-minded and not aware of our brothers past exploits.

Now, the so-called "superiority complex" is not restricted to Nigerians in the diaspora but it started in Nigeria. Let me be blunt: Most Nigerians, bar core Northerners, are elitist, arrogant, criminally-minded and self-centered. Charity starts at home. Everyday, the average Nigerian tries to cheat their fellow Nigerian all in the name of being "smart". We love to carry labels and oppress each other. You have Island vs Mainland, Private Universities vs Public Universities, Universities vs Polytechnics, overseas students vs home students, First class vs every other class, PHD vs Masters etc. When you have this type of mindset, why won't you have the same problems overseas? I mean, in this very Nigeria, people judge you based on the way you dress, look, talk, the type of car you drive and the kind of family you come from. Your former President once asked a Nigerian girl in the UK "who is your father?". I will say no more.

As for those suggesting that picking a wife from Nigeria is better, please who are the Nigerian women without papers abroad that the OP was referring to?? Is it not the same Nigerian women from Nigeria? Are they not the same Nigerian women, born and bred in Nigeria who migrated abroad like the OP? All those Nigerian men killing their wives in the States, are they not the same women that were brought over from Nigeria? You lots really make me laugh.

Nigerians are natural snitches. They will upload all their problems on social media not minding that others will observe and use it against them. They make noise like they are the only nationality to experience JAPA. The Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Lebanese and Fililpinos have been immigrating for decades yet they don't make noise like Nigerians. Nigeria is not even among the top 20 countries that have the most emigrants but we make it look like we have the highest number of emigrants in the world. We just love to make noise. It's a complex.

He's ALWAYS on the road with you as he handles all details concerning your transportation, crew, equipment, accommodation and expenses. You believe Instagram bloggers lol. Anything goes on social media. Nigerians travel for tourism but the numbers are down compared to 5 years ago. How many people out of over 200 million Nigerians can afford a flight ticket of N1million, visa of at least N70k and other expenses? Only the upper middle class and the rich can afford it.

I wouldn't say that they are an "elite group". They just happen to have documents that enables them to move back and forth. If you want to be like them, you need to have a green card, Indefinite leave to Remain (UK), Canadian PR, EU residency card etc. For even more flexibility, you can go all the way and acquire citizenship of those countries (which is what majority of those "elite groups" do). I, myself, move back and forth between Nigeria and Europe because I can.

P.S. the only other way you can achieve that without acquiring the aforementioned documents is to apply for an investor visa which will enable you to set up a business abroad and live there. However, it comes with a lot of restrictions. Anyways, this is why I have been preaching to Nigerians in Nigeria to acquire a second passport via JAPA. In this day and age, being stuck in one country isn't enough anymore.

There is an elite group of japa people that do not necessarily live abroad. They typically spend 6 months in USA or Canada or UK and spend 6 months back in Nigeria.
They go abroad to work for some months and come back home to Nigeria.
Please who can guide on how to achieve that status instead of going abroad to live there or spend years. What is the best route or process to achieve that, especially for Canada or USA. Please help with advice and experiences. Thanks nairaland

Lol, before nko? Nigeria is just a cash out destination for many foreigners and foreign based Nigerians. They understand that Nigerians celebrate mediocrity and worship anything foreign. It didn't start today. Look at John Fashanu. He rejected playing for Nigeria in his prime but once he retired, he visited the country on numerous occasions looking for Government contracts. Mike Edwards of BBN, who spent his whole life in the UK, came to Nigeria, got the fame,sponsorships and then moved back to England. Simon Ekpa was a nobody in Finland who rode on the IPOB euphoria to make a name for himself. Dude can't even visit his own state. Kemi Adeosun and Ngozi Okonjo used Nigeria to upgrade their international CVs.

Look at what Indians, Lebanese and Chinese are doing in Nigeria. Can they try that nonsense in their home countries? They send most of their profits back home.

It was obvious from day one. Nigeria is just a cash out destination for most foreigners and foreign based Nigerians. They understand that Nigerians celebrate mediocrity and don't ask questions. They also understand that Nigerians suffer from inferiority complex and worship anything foreign hence why those at the bottom of the developed world can succeed in Nigeria. We should just be grateful that most foreigners aren't aware of our deep seated level of inferiority complex otherwise they would be rushing to Nigeria to cash out.

OP, since you already have your visa, it would be advisable to book your return ticket for 7 days in case something comes up. I normally advise clients to apply for a visit visa if they are attending a conference as it gives them more flexibility. A Conference visa is issued for a very limited time period and comes with many stipulations.

Actually I just got my Canada visa and I’m due to travel by the end of this month. I’m going for a 1 day conference in Nanaimo, B.C. I will like to ask which airport will be my Port of entry? How many days should I book for my ticket, I was thinking of booking for 7 days I don’t know if it’s right like that, and also will I have to book for another domestic flight or bus because Nanaimo is like another 2 hours to Vancouver international airport..
