You are actually right. That was an error on my part. Majority of Nigerians are unpatriotic, selfish and tribalistic. We put tribal and religious interest first before national interest. We only care about our individual progress even if it comes at the expense of national progress. If most Nigerians had the same opportunities as the elite, we would all do the same thing. Even abroad, we display the same self-centered characteristics hence why the Nigerian community overseas is not united compared to the Chinese, Indian, Lebanese or Jewish communities.

OP, Nigerians have what is called a 'crabs in a bucket' syndrome. They don't want their fellow countrymen to succeed. They want to be the gate keepers to success. As Gerrard rightly said, majority of the Nigerian elite either have second passports or properties abroad. Most of their children don't go to school in Nigeria. The ones abroad who are discouraging Nigerians from coming over there are noise makers. They want to be seen as the only Nigerians abroad. 95% of them already have already acquired the citizenship of their host countries. Ask them to renounce their foreign citizenship and return home, they can't do it. A lot of them have nothing to show for all the years they were living abroad so their best bet is to de-market the country they are based in.

Staying in Nigeria is not an issue. The real problem is staying in the country without a plan B which is why it is imperative that Nigerians try to secure dual nationality by any means necessary. I lived in Europe for many years before relocating to Nigeria in 2014 with a second passport to boot butI would never discourage anyone from JAPAIing in order to create the same opportunities for themselves. Most of the elites don't believe in Nigeria and only see it as a cash out venture. It's the masses who are the most patriotic.

Nigerians are blowing this JAPA syndrome way out of proportion. Immigration is a global phenomenon. The countries Nigerians are Japaing to are also migrating to other countries for even better prospects. Many British professionals are migrating to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. for higher wages. A lot of young professionals from Eastern European countries such as Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus are migrating to the much wealthier countries in the EU such as Germany, France and the Republic of Ireland. The Canada that Nigerians are migrating are themselves moving down south of the border to the U.S. for better wages and more job opportunities. You don't see the nationals of the aforementioned countries making noise like we do. We just act like we are the only ones affected by the "brain drain" problem.

There are over 200 million Nigerians and the number of people who have left the country in the past 15 years cannot be more than 40,000. Many Nigerians cannot JAPA because of lack of funds. Only the middle class and the upper class can afford to JAPA. The real question you lots should be asking is what measures have the Government taken to encourage those intending to leave to stay? Everything else is just English.

Let me tell you something, contrary to popular belief, money is not the sole/primary reason why so many educated professionals are leaving this country in droves. Many of them are disillusioned with the way the country is run. Education is poor, infrastructure dead, transportation is a mess, security is non-existent and electricity is a shambles. There's also no financial incentives to encourage SMEs and the middle class in general. Until all of this is sorted, expect more people to JAPA in the coming years. In a country where the only qualification needed to be an elected official is your secondary school certificate, why won't the educated ones JAPA? They will keep offering their skills to the highest bidder since you lots don't appreciate them. Continue voting for illiterates based on the fact that he/she is your tribesman. You haven't seen nothing.

There are too many factors involved such as location, job, social status, lifestyle and the kind of partner involved. A man from upper class background has a different reality to that of someone from a working class background. People from privilege will be looking at things such as annual vacation, quality of schools, living in a very decent area etc. Men from humble backgrounds don't have that kind of reality/expectation. Overall, it would be ideal to earn a minimum of N180k if you live in the big cities and N80k in smaller cities.

Help me tell them! Nigerians talk like the UK and US are the only countries in the world with examples of good governance. They feel that because governance in those countries is expensive then it must be the same in Nigeria. Health care in most EU countries is cheap. Health care in the middle east is free for their citizens. Even Latin American countries like Brazil and Argentina have free health care. The aforementioned countries also have subsidized tuition free education for their own citizens but Nigerian will never look at those options. The OP and those that liked his post are not in touch with reality. Newsflash, the people who are Japaing from Nigeria are the well-to-do folks. The ones who are earning 700k and above. Poor people cannot afford to JAPA. Hence why they migrate through Libya or Morocco illegally. Many rich kids don't live in this country. The ones that are living in Nigeria are those who don't have second passports. A lot of the 1% are buying second passports in drones to prepare themselves in case anything happens. OP, avoid those countries like a plague. Oman is an Islamic country and has zero employment opportunities for non-citizens. Turkey is dealing with an economic crisis and has just re-elected a right wing socialist who sees himself as the new Ataturk. Cyprus (both north and south) has zero economic opportunities for hustlers. You need to increase your income in order to JAPA to a reasonable country. Try Finland (citizenship guaranteed within 5 years), France (low tuition fees and citizenship within 5 years) or Brazil (nice place for business, similar mentality to Nigeria and guaranteed citizenship within a short period). Be prepared to learn a new language as it helps a lot.

For those who desire to check out of the country, it is very important to immigrate while you are young and agile. This advice is underrated. You see, the older you are the harder it is to adapt to a foreign country. If one is observant, most of the people making so much noise abroad about the cultural differences between the developed world and Nigeria tend to be those from their late twenties to their early thirties. These guys have spent all their lives in Nigeria. They have completed all their education in the country from nursery to University. A few of them even have work experience (which is vital in the west).

The ideal age bracket to JAPA in my own opinion, is between the ages of 18-30. Once you are 30, it becomes more difficult. At 30, you are expected to have at least 5 years work experience. Employers like consistency. They want you to show them that you have been consistently occupied by either acquiring more skills or more experience. I can talk about this topic because I went through the system. I left Nigeria immediately after completing my Secondary School (NECO). Completed my A'levels, Bachelors, Post Grad and Law School abroad. As such, it was easier for me to adapt to the system.

Many working professionals who were climbing the career ladder in Nigeria struggle once they move abroad because they have to start all over again from scratch and that's not an easy thing to do. Many of them have families that depend on them and it's difficult trying to rebuild your life again as foreign countries don't rate Nigerian degrees and you have to accept menial jobs in the meantime to pay the bills.

All I am saying is that it is best to immigrate when you are in your prime. It is easier. The older you are the more difficult it gets. Once you have lived in a country for a very long period of time, it becomes difficult to leave except you have no choice. That is not to say that people who immigrated at a much older age didn't succeed abroad. Many of them did but they themselves would tell you how difficult it was to adapt. If you are 40 & above you can still JAPA but it's going to be very difficult because the job market abroad is youth oriented. Late teens to late twenties should be the target age to JAPA.

The OP is spot on but he should make some amendments. As a man, never date/marry a woman that doesn't find you attractive whether sexually, intellectually or financially. It never ends well. If she's with you for the long run, it's because she lacks options. Nigerian men fail to develop themselves physically and intellectually. They think that everything is about money. OP, before you think about going anywhere, you have to ask yourself a few questions. Do you have any travel history? Not a must but it is advantageous. Do you have any skills that will be useful to the country you want to japa to? Very important question. Just know that sociology is a useless course. Do you have enough finances to sustain yourself abroad after all expenses paid. I leave to answer that question yourself. Finally, do you have any relatives abroad? That helps a lot as it is not easy migrating to a country where you don't know people.

Once you have answered those questions, the next step is to research the countries you want to migrate to. Just know that UK, US, Canada, Australia and Ireland are way above your budget. You should be looking at European countries that offer free or low tuition fees such as Austria, France, Portugal, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania and Poland. Chao.

The Legal profession in Nigeria is a tough and rugged profession. For us lawyers, we have to follow the RPC (Rules of Professional Conduct) which limits the way a lawyer can market themselves. I have noticed how a lot of female lawyers have been able to create a brand for themselves via social media. Many of our female colleagues are into content writing, blogging and brand marketing. A few of these women already have clients by the time they are called to the Bar. Many of these ladies have side businesses have side businesses such as food shops, clothing stores and other products to supplement their income. You have to give these ladies respect when it comes to putting themselves out there for the profession.
