Politics › Sanusi Tell FG: Seeks Investment In Solar Panel Production by Gjrich(op): 12:20am On Sep 08, 2020
Domestic production of solar panels to generate electricity off-grid would boost job creation, improve power generation and transform the economy, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, said at the weekend.

According to him, the major raw material for its production silica, can be found in abundance in the country. He said the country is also blessed with sun with which solar energy can be generated off-grid to run small business, create jobs along the value chain and lead to other multiplier effects on the economy.

The former traditional ruler who spoke during an interview on Arise Television at the weekend, supported the removal of oil subsidy, adding that the economy wasn’t prepared for the Covid-19 pandemic because of the huge percentage of cash it has been using to service debts.

Speaking on the economy before COVID-19 and the measures taken to reset it, he said before the outbreak of the virus, the economy was “already on slow growth mode”, stressing that the huge cash spent on debt servicing was also excruciating.

He said: “We were already spending 60-70 per cent of government revenue on debt servicing, we already had low level of resource…we already had multiple exchange rates; we have already spent five, six years and continue paying N1trillion on fuel subsidy, we already do not have transparency in NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation). So, we already set up, precisely not to be able to cope with an unexpected crisis which is why the only option before the government was to go and raise money, go and borrow because the revenues aren’t there, the resources aren’t there, the buffers aren’t there. Now, that places the country in a very difficult situation.”

He said the new measures put in place by the Federal Government were painful but to put the economy on the right path in view of paucity of funds.

“It is not totally impossible, some of the recent measures announced, the measures from the IMF ((International Monetary Fund); the elimination of fuel subsidy, painful as those are, those are necessary structural adjustment we need to make to improve the revenue profile of government. We now have increased transparency in the NNPC, I just read this money that NNPC has remitted almost N2trillion to the Federation Account which is much more than in ages.’’ omestic production of solar panels to generate electricity off-grid would boost job creation, improve power generation and transform the economy, the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, said at the weekend.

Politics › I Will Not Run For Any Political Office In Nigeria- SANUSI INSISTED by Gjrich(op): 12:03am On Sep 08, 2020
Former Emir of Kano, Muhammed Sanusi, has insisted he has no plans to run for any political office in the country.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, there have been speculations that Sanusi could emerge as one of the candidates.

However, in an interview on Arise TV on Friday, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said he has no interest in politics.

Instead, he will be running a fellowship programme at Oxford University in the United Kingdom in October.

“People have been talking to me about politics when I was in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). I have never had an interest in partisan politics.

“The nature of my family is that we consider ourselves the leaders of the poorer people and you know politics can be very divisive.
“All I can say is that it is not an objective for me. I think there are many ways of being of service to the nation. I started as an academic and after just two years, I completed my masters and went into banking for some reasons. I have been a banker, a regulator, an emir,” he said.

Politics › Insecurity: Northern Elders Tell Buhari - Sack Service Chiefs Now by Gjrich(op): 11:36pm On Sep 07, 2020
Worried by the worsening security in the country, the Coalition of North Central Elders, CNCE, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to restructure the country’s security architecture by sacking Service Chiefs with immediate effect.

The group, which attributed the scaling insecurity in Nigeria noted that sacking the Service Chief was the way of the wood in the wake of the unfolding fact that it’s the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, that was issuing security alert, first of such development in the history of Nigeria.

The National Chairman of the group, Usman Bida, and its National Secretary, Barr Moses Okudu, in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, expressed disappointment in the assurances and rhetoric of President Mohammadu Buhari to tackle the problem, which they said was no longer appealing.

The group noted that alert on the presence Boko Haram elements in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, by the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, was as a result of ‘intelligence failure’ on the part of security agencies.

“We join other well-meaning Nigerians to call on Mr. President to immediately restructure the current security architecture in the country with the sacking of the service chiefs as the first steps.

“Nigerians are tired of rhetorics and promises of the security situation getting better.

We are saddened that there is no state in the North Central that is free from terrorists’ attacks or that has not had it own fair share of the mindless killing of innocent citizens one time or the other, a region that was the most peaceful in the entire North.

When we were about to recover from the arrest of over 400 terrorists with dangerous weapons in Toto Local Government of Nasarawa by the military which was quite commendable, we are taken aback by the recent intelligence reports released by Nigerian Customs Service of the presence of Boko Haram elements in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and some local government areas in Nasarawa and Niger states. This is a complete failure of intelligence.

“As it stand today, the well-meaning citizens of North Central and Nigeria are frightened by this information.

“Some parts of Nasarawa, Niger and Kogi States are no-go areas because of the activities of these terrorists that kill, kidnap, and rob people at will as if we are in a Banana republic.

“In Niger State, people are killed on a daily basis, women are raped and children killed by this terrorist group.

“We voted for President Muhammed Buhari because of his vast experience in security and integrity and we expect the best from him.

“Mr President, we are with you and will always be, but we feel your continued retention of the service chiefs for the last five years running is totally against the wishes of Nigerian people given that it is causing a lot low morale and bad work zeal in the entire Armed Forces. We appeal that you act now.

“Mr. President, sir, four officers cannot be more experienced than thousands of the officers we have in the Armed Forces.

It is on this note that we appeal to you to, as a matter of urgency and national importance, sack them from office.”

Politics › Sudan Ends 30 Years Of Islamic Law By Separating Religion, State by Gjrich(op): 4:18pm On Sep 06, 2020
Sudan’s transitional government has agreed to separate religion from the state, ending 30 years of Islamic rule in the country.

Leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North rebel group Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu and Sudanese Prime minister Abdalla Hamdok signed the declaration in Addis Ababa on Thursday.

“For Sudan to become a democratic country where the rights of all citizens are enshrined, the constitution should be based on the principle of ‘separation of religion and state,’ in the absence of which the right to self-determination must be respected,” the declaration stated.

This comes less than a week after the government signed a peace deal with rebel forces, raising hopes of an end to the violence that had crippled the Darfur region and other parts of Sudan under ousted president Omar al-Bashir.

Sudan is emerging from international isolation that began soon after Bashir seized power in 1989 and implemented a hard-line interpretation of Islamic law that sought to make the nation the “vanguard of the Islamic world”.

The United States labeled Sudan a terror sponsor in 1993 and later imposed sanctions until 2017.

Politics › Bamgbose Tells Tinubu: Buhari Has Killed Your Ambition, You Can’t Be President by Gjrich(op): 10:51am On Sep 06, 2020
Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and his party have been asked to perish any hope of winning the 2023 presidency because they have failed Nigerians

Barrister Olusegun Bamgbose, National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, CAGG, believes that the actions of the current administration, most recently the hike in the prices of fuel and electricity, has clearly suffocated Tinubu’s ambition.

Bamgbose described the APC as a party with no sympathy whatsoever for the poor masses.

Bamgbose lamented that it was quite unfortunate that the All Progressives Congress, APC, which promised better life, good governance, positive change to Nigerians, has successfully made reverse the case.

In a chat with DAILY POST over the increase in the pump price of fuel and electricity tarrif, the senior lawyer said the “Buhari administration is fast becoming oppressive and burdensome.

“One wonders the justification of these hikes when we are still grappling with poverty, hardship and unemployment. Most recently, National Bureau of Statistics came out to inform Nigerians that about 21 million Nigerians are unemployed.

“We still remain the poverty capital of the world. We should also remember here that we are yet recover from the COVID-19 devastating effects on the economy. On top of all these and many more, this government went ahead to increase the pump price, to say the least, this is inhuman and and a clear case of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians. We urge the administration to reverse the hike within 14 days.

“There is no justification whatsoever for the hike at this critical period. The untimely hike is odious and obnoxious, reversal is the only thing that will make Nigerians happy.

“However if they fail to reverse the hike in pump price, they should forget about 2023. If they believe, they will use the power of incumbency to win elections come 2023, they will meet their waterloo.

“Bola Tinubu has refused to make any categorical statement, meaning he will toe the same line of oppressing the masses if he wins.

“I’ll urge him to forget about becoming the President of Nigeria come 2023. I foresee a real change come 2023, our mumu don do. Enough is enough.”

Politics › CBN Directs Banks To Take Over Electricity Bill Payment Collection From Discos by Gjrich(op): 8:23pm On Aug 26, 2020
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a directive to banks to collect electricity bill payments.

In a circular dated August 21, Bello Hassan, CBN’s director of banking supervision, said taking over from electricity distribution companies will improve transparency in the power sector.

“The payment or settlement of all NESI related goods or services shall be made through the Nigerian banking system,” the circular stated.

“Consequently, all collections for the payments of NESI regulated goods and services provided by a DisCo shall be paid into a designated account such that collections arising from services rendered by the DisCo shall be paid into an account in the sole name of the DisCo; collections arising from services rendered by a third party/parties on behalf of the DisCo shall be paid into an account in the joint name of the DisCo and the third-party vendor(s)

“All energy and non-energy collections of DisCos, whether cash or cashless, shall only be performed by deposit money banks (DMBs). No entity shall be permitted to collect revenues for DisCos except if that entity is so authorized by a DMB in line with the relevant CBN guidelines for agent banking and agent banking relationships.

“Therefore, the DMB shall be permitted to authorize its agents to collect energy and non-energy payments on its behalf for any DisCo; the actions or inactions of the agent shall be the responsibility of the authorizing DMB. Any DMB found to be maintaining any account(s) for any entity collecting payments on behalf of any DisCo without appropriate authorization shall have regulatory actions imposed on it.”

The apex bank also directed that banks providing bank guarantees to Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET) Plc and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on behalf of DisCos, would take full responsibility for the collections and the remittances of the DisCos to both NBET and TCN.

“For the avoidance of doubt, no DMB is permitted to open or continue to maintain a collection account for a DisCo without the express no-objection of the DMB that guaranteed its exposure to NBET or TCN,” it said.

The Cable reported that in the latest quarterly report of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the collection efficiency by the DisCos is low and has continued to adversely impact the financial liquidity of the industry.

Revenue generation is one of the major challenges of the power sector. DisCos keep lamenting over revenue shortfalls attributed to low electricity tariff. But this new directive from the CBN is suggesting that electricity revenue has been going into the wrong accounts.

However, Nigerians are concerned that the directive is coming from the Apex bank instead of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
Given that the DisCos are privately owned companies, many are questioning the right the central bank has to direct them on how to receive electricity bill payment.

Politics › Justification For Resuscitating The Sovereign State Of Biafra by Gjrich(op): 10:13am On Aug 23, 2020
Accordingly, Sir James Robertson, the last colonial Governor-General, ensured that political power at the centre was eventually handed over to northerners so that the British could continue to exert influence on her puppets from a distance.

A persuasive case can be made that for very bad reasons colonial officials were biased in favour of northern Nigeria to the detriment of the south and Nigeria as a whole, which was why Sir Tafawa Balewa was chosen as Prime Minister instead of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe or Chief Obafemi Awolowo who had the intellectual sophistication and executive experience as Premiers of their respective regions to govern a newly independent complex geopolitical construct like Nigeria.

(The same colonial favouritism of the north is probably the reason why the British establishment knighted two frontline northern politicians, Ahmadu Bello and Balewa, but did not extend the same honour to Azikiwe and Awolowo.)

Now, from the perspective of southern Nigeria, the benefits of Lugardian amalgamation pale into insignificance when juxtaposed with the violence and destruction unleashed on the people by the colonisers, coupled with the socio-political disruptions and psychological trauma which resulted from the process.

The same is partially true for northerners, except that after independence their military-civilian elite began to reap more and more benefits from the northernisation policy of Balewa instigated by the colonial administration and from overcentralisation of political power inaugurated by the military coup of January 15, 1966.

The second reason for Biafra which can be distilled from the first is the complex multiply plural nature of Nigeria. But this time around I wish to focus more on religious differences, especially between the Muslim north and the Christian south, with the understanding that there is a significant population of Muslims in the south and of Christians in the north.

(In the mind of a typical core Fulani Muslim, southern Muslims belong to the inferior category of Muslims.) The incredible diversity of the more than two hundred and fifty ethnic groups and subgroups, with their different cultures, languages and lifestyles is compounded by the huge difference in outlook between Christians and Muslims, brought to limelight on October 27, 1999 when Governor Ahmed Sani Yerima introduced sharia in Zamfara state.

In recent years, Fulani caliphate colonialists whose philosophy of “Conquer and Islamise” is in tandem with the core objectives of Boko Haram, Myetti Allah, and other Islamist terrorist organisations are working really hard to impose Islam throughout southern Nigeria.

Only few southerners knowledgeable in Islamic scriptures know that prominent members of the dominant Fulani power block consider it their Allah-approved right to lead the country and spread sharia nationwide, as adumbrated in remarks credited to Alhaji Ahmadu Bello twelve days after independence to the effect that Nigeria should be the estate of their great-grandfather,

Usman Dan Fodio, with the rest of the country serving as a tool to maintain Fulani hegemony. Unfortunately, southern politicians and the elite in general are not taking the encroaching Islamisation which has gathered more speed since 2015 very seriously, and it might be too late to reverse the trend once it crosses the Rubicon, so to speak.

There is no country in the world with a huge population of Muslims and non-Muslims that can boast of stable constitutional democracy because whether the Muslims control or do not control the levers of political power they cannot stop until Islam becomes the state religion.

Besides, the Quran and the Hadith are fundamentally radioactive to modern democratic governance, since they stipulate that sharia is the absolute Allah-ordained law to guide the rulers and the entire community, and prescribe extremely harsh measures (including gruesome capital punishment) to ensure compliance.

In this connection, the ruling Muslim cabal in northern Nigeria have always used religion as an instrument of political domination, thereby making politics at the centre inherently unstable, divisive, and very acrimonious. This explains why Maj. T.Y. Danjuma led a band of bloodthirsty northern soldiers, tacitly supported by

Lt. Col. Gowon, to brutally murder Maj. Gen. J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi to ensure that northerners took back power and dominate the army, an action that kick-started the succession of military coups executed by northerners for Muslim northerners.

Some might say that Gowon and Danjuma are Christians. But Christian military officers from the middle-belt have always been beholden to their caliphate overlords in accordance with the Sardauna’s Fulani supremacist proclamation referred to earlier.

Hence it is not surprising that one of the leitmotifs in all the crises that have reared their ugly heads since the foundation of Nigeria are religious riots in which hundreds of Christians of Igbo extraction are still being killed in the north. Lord Harcourt and Lugard Lugard made a big mistake by not considering the propensity of Muslims to seek to lord it over non-Muslims before deciding to bring the north and south into one amalgam.

Any assessment of the periodic eruption of secessionist agitation in the former eastern region since 1967 that does not reckon with the religious factor is fundamentally incomplete. For all its weaknesses, liberal democracy is better than theocracy, let alone Islamic theocracy under sharia.

And given the fundamental republican nature of traditional Igbo society anchored on the democratic principle of ohacracy, and that an overwhelming majority of Ndigbo are still Christians despite the aberrant pro-Islam orientation of political carpetbaggers like Orji Uzor Kalu, Rochas Okorocha and, lately, Hope Uzodinma,

I predict that the people will resist the Islamisation project with everything they have. Personally, of the three Abrahamic religions, I detest Islam the most. If resuscitation of Biafra will prevent Islamisation of Igboland, then let Biafra come.

One of the most important reasons for endorsing the quest for Biafra is the horrible experiences of Ndigbo and by extension the former eastern region in Nigeria. Most educated Nigerians from outside Igboland in particular often employ facetious acrobatic arguments to deflect the point made by Prof. Achebe that “Nigerians will probably achieve consensus on no other matter than their common resentment of the Igbo.”

Achebe might have hyperbolised the actual situation, but there is no doubt that the weight of inter-ethnic suspicion and distrust is heavier on Ndigbo than on any other ethnic group in the country.

People from other areas outside Igboland often pretend not to know that the preeminent position of Ndigbo in our national life before the revanchist coup of July 29, 1966 was more the result of the adventurous and can-do spirit of a typical Igboman than the outcome of government official favourable to the Igbo.

Right from time the quota system has been implemented in a manner that favours the north. Unfortunately, the success of Ndigbo has engendered what Prof. Achebe described in Igbo as ekwolo or deep resentment borne out of jealousy in Nigerians from other ethnic groups, especially the Hausa-Fulani and the Yoruba.

The Igbo partially share the blame for this: some of the successful ones are too arrogant and exhibitionist, although these weaknesses, to be candid, are universal amongst human beings across cultures and ethnicities and do not warrant the depth of dislike towards the “Jews of Africa.”

That said, the simple truth is that the Igbo are hated by other ethnic groups out of envy and jealousy for being successful against all odds, despite the fact, correctly noted by one of the foremost Nigerian historians, Prof. Tekena Tamuno, that the Igbo are the makers of modern Nigeria.

Due to the hatred, Ndigbo have been by far the victims of all the riots, pogroms and bloody religious uprisings that occurred in the north, including the Jos and Kano killings of 1945 and 1953 respectively, the Maitatsine riots of 1981, the beheading of Gideon Akaluka masterminded by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (1995), Kaduna riots of 2000,

Miss World Riots of 2002, Yelwa massacre of 2004, the cartoon of Prophet Muhammad crisis (2008), post-elections violence (2011), killing of Biafran protesters in several places in Igboland from late 2015 to February 2016, the murderous Operation Python Dance (2017), and several others.

Without a doubt, the greatest evil the rest of Nigeria had visited on Ndigbo and her immediate neighbours that constituted the defunct Biafra occurred during the civil war and few years afterwards.

Politics › Why The Igbos Will Always Be Ahead Of Other Tribes In Nigeria – Obasanjo by Gjrich(op): 8:40am On Aug 23, 2020
Efforts to tame the Igbo nation has prooved abortive anytime, this is so because the Igbos are more republican by nature, which is why it is very difficult for you to tame such a tribe.

Former President of Nigeria, Chief Obasanjo revealed reasons why Igbos are ahead of other tribes in Nigeria. It will be a task impossible to actualize for the Igbos, to follow the Yoruba’s Ideology.

From the extensive research I did on the three major tribes, I find out that the Igbos are the most westernized, most enterprising, most astute, most dynamic, most intelligent (smart), and the most technically gifted tribe found among the black race. The Hausa/Fulani and the Yorubas have limitations. But an Igbo man doesn’t see any limitations.

An average Igbo man is highly competitive, unlike the Yoruba and the Hausa/Fulani.

While the Yoruba and the Hausa/Fulani had kingdoms which enabled the British to infiltrate their territories easily, the Igbos on the other hand, had what could be called “Chiefdoms” (autonomous Communities). These structures made it very difficult to tame the Igbos.

It took the British just 9 months to tame the North and South West but almost 30 years to be able to tame the Igbos. The British had to send a team of anthropologists to the South to understudy the Igbo because, they (the British) acknowledged they hadn’t been up against a black race with such depth and intelligence coupled with the gut to confront the whites and learn from them so, so fast.

While a Tinubu, can have unrestricted influence over the Yoruba tribe, something you can only find mostly among blacks and some poor nations on earth today, an Igbo man can never be tamed by the ideology of one man unchecked, no matter how highly placed he or she is. That’s why the Igbos are very successful no matter where they find themselves. They don’t believe in putting limitations on their path. You can only find such similarities among the Europeans, the Americans, and developed Asian tiger nations.

A Hausa/Fulani man sees Kano as his world. A Yoruba man sees Lagos as his world. An Igbo man sees the world as his Village! More from Souce Ndigbo Link

Culture › Black Igbo Jews: ' Are Igbos The Lost Tribe Of Israel That Settled In Nigeria ? by Gjrich(op): 7:53am On Aug 23, 2020
.

Eze A.E. Chukwuemeka Eri, the king of a community in Aguleri, wears a white shirt with the Star of David stitched on the front. He is building a center for the study of Judaism.

Onyibor Oloh serves on the council of chiefs to King Eri. Oloh says Igbo people are gaining a better understanding of who they are.
Jewish Igbos believe they are descendants of 'lost tribes' of Israel who settled in Nigeria.

Some draw many parallels between Jewish and Igbo customs
Others claim Igbo civilization is older than that of the Israelites
A Shabbat service is underway at the Ghihon Hebrew Research synagogue in the Jikwoyi suburb of Nigeria's federal capital territory.
Fourteen year-old Kadmiel Izungu Abor heads there with his family. They walk alongside stray goats on a road covered in red dust and potholes, lined with open sewage. They are nearly 20 kilometers away from the modern multi-story office buildings and sprawling mansions in Nigeria's capital city of Abuja.
About 50 people gather in the synagogue. They pray from the Siddur, they read from the Torah and as they chant, Abor's mellow alto begins to rise.

In a country of 162 million people tensions often lead to violent uprisings between Christians and Muslims and being part of the religious minority can be an issue. But Abor wears his kippah and his identity with pride.

"I am a Jewish Igbo," he says.
The Igbo are one of Nigeria's largest ethnic groups with population estimates ranging from 20 to 50 million. Abor is convinced that the Igbo's ancestors were Jews.
"The son of Yaakov, Jacob, [was] Gad and I learned that he was among those people who went out of Israel to exile," Abor says. "So from there he had a son called Eri and a son gave birth to a son called Aguleri and that's how the Igbo race began."
Zambia's Jewish settlers

Zambia's Jewish settlers 05:43
From generation to generation, some Igbo have passed down various versions of a migration story framed around Jacob, a patriarch of Judaism. A popular version of the narrative holds that Gad, the seventh son of Jacob, had three sons who settled in present-day southeastern Nigeria, which is predominantly inhabited by the Igbo. Those sons, Eri, Arodi and Areli (as mentioned in the book of Genesis), are said to have fathered clans, established kingdoms and founded towns still in existence in southeastern Nigeria today, including Owerri, Umuleri, Arochukwu and Aguleri.

. He has no doubts that Eri is his ancestor. He has even acquired land to establish an educational center for the study of Jewish culture.

"Israelites and Igbos are brothers," he says with a broad smile.
King Eri, like many, claims that the Igbo are the Jews of West Africa. They believe they are descendants of at least one of Israel's lost tribes. In the eighth century B.C. the Assyrians invaded Israel's northern kingdom forcing 10 tribes into exile. Historians say it is not unlikely that these tribes migrated westward to Africa.
Throughout history, large populations of dispersed Jews also became "lost" through forced conversions and cultural assimilation.
"There is evidence that is scientific that the Igbos descended from the people that evolved in Israel," says Remy Ilona. He began investigating the stories from his youth more than a decade ago.

"When I grew up I heard, like virtually every Igbo here, that the Igbo people came from Israel," the Abuja-based lawyer says. His field work in Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Mali led him to conclude that Igbo and Jewish culture are not just similar, but "identical."
In his latest book, Ilona draws parallels between Igbo rituals and customs and those practiced by Jews. Shared traditional practices include circumcising male children eight days after birth, refraining from eating "unclean" or tabooed foods, mourning the dead for seven days, celebrating the New Moon and conducting wedding ceremonies under a canopy. Some historians have noted that the Igbo were practicing these customs before their exposure to the Bible and missionaries.

Daniel Lis, from the Institute for Jewish Studies, University of Basel, Switzerland, is one of the foremost researchers on Jewish identification among the Igbo. He says there has been a clear continuity of Jewish identity among the Igbo. "It's not just something that happened yesterday," he says.

The Swiss-Israeli anthropologist says that Igbo-Jewish identity can be traced back to the 18th century. Cross-cultural comparisons have been documented by people ranging from George Thomas Basden, the influential Anglican missionary and ethnographer who proposed that the word "Igbo" evolved as a corruption of the word "Hebrew," to Olaudah Equiano, a freed Igbo slave living in 18th century British society.

The oral stories and historic notations of cultural resemblances between the Igbo and the Jews have proven compelling enough to lure a diverse array of people to southeastern Nigeria.

Michael Freund, an American Jew based in Israel, is planning his first trip to Nigeria to get a first-hand look at the culture of the Igbo.
"I've read about them but of course there is nothing like actually hearing the stories of the people themselves," he says.
Discovering "lost" Jewish communities around the world is what Freund does.
He is the founder and chairman of the independent non-profit organization Shavei Israel. According to its media spokesperson Arik Puder, Shavei Israel is the only organization in Israel that focuses on finding descendants of the legendary lost tribes.

He says the Israeli government does not recognize ethnic communities in various countries claiming to be descendants of lost tribes.
"They cannot prove that they have a Jewish grandfather or grandmother," Puder says. "But they do have an interesting story."
Freund says he has received numerous letters and emails from Nigerians trying to connect to Israel. But with a rising number of groups around the world attempting to link their ancestry to the ancient Israelites, he is aware that some of those claims are "wishful thinking." He hopes that the future will yield strong genetic evidence to help the search for the lost tribes.

"As DNA technology improves there will be a growing stock of scientific evidence which can perhaps buttress the claims of an Israeli ancestry," he says.
A 2012 documentary called "Re-Emerging: The Jews of Nigeria" featured the country's Jewish community.
The film featured Rabbi Howard Gorin. He retired from the congressional rabbinate in 2012 after 32 years as the spiritual leader of a Jewish congregation in the U.S. state of Maryland. Gorin has played a significant role in the rise of Judaism in Nigeria since his first trip to the country in 2004.
"I embrace them and support them as brothers and sisters," he says. He ships books on Judaism to synagogues in Nigeria.

More support comes from groups like Kulanu, a New York-based non-profit group. Kulanu assists emerging Jewish communities around the world, like the one in Nigeria. But most of the Igbo who practice Judaism were not born to a Jewish mother and have not converted according to halakhah, Jewish law, so many Orthodox Jews would not recognize them.
Even among Igbo people, the claim to be Jews elicits strong criticism. One critic, Catherine Acholonu, attributes Jewish identification among the Igbo as a result of Christianity brought by missionaries, since most Igbo people are Christians.
"Everybody is excited to say they belong to the people of the Bible because the Bible is reigning -- it's in," says Acholonu, a prominent researcher on Igbo history and culture.
In her award-winning book "They Lived Before Adam" Acholonu proposes that Igbo civilization is older than that of the Israelites.

Peter Agbai, who says he is a "proud Igbo man," strongly disagrees.
He started practicing Judaism in 1991 after leaving the Methodist church. He says that the more he followed the commandments in the Torah, the more he realized that he was doing what his parents had always done as followers of traditional Igbo culture and spirituality.
"I have seen that the traditions of our people are similar to those in the Bible," says the 66-year-old, making references to aspects like ritual bathing and polygamy.
Agbai is one of the founders of the Ghihon synagogue. He plays an important role as a spiritual leader in Abuja's community of Igbo Jews. He attended Abor's bar mitzvah last year, an experience that Abor says made him feel like a man, and feel closer to the Jewish culture.
He wants to go deeper into Orthodox Judaism and take a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
"I want to live in Israel," Abor says. He hopes that there, he will get a better understanding of his forefathers.

Crime › Soldiers Allegedly Torture Policeman To Death In Rivers State by Gjrich(op): 10:09pm On Aug 22, 2020
A police inspector, Hosea Yakubu, has died after he was allegedly tortured by four military men at Eleme Petrochemical gate, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. It was gathered that Yakubu was beaten to a pulp by the soldiers attached to the company last week Sunday for driving against traffic.

A brother to Yakubu said the deceased and two other officers were returning from normal patrol duties when due to traffic gridlock along Eleme they decided to drive against the normal flow. On approaching the petrochemical gate, he said they were stopped by someone on mufti, not knowing he was a military personnel, who challenged them for driving against traffic.

This led to argument with the military personnel on mufti slapping the police driver. However, when Yakubu came down to challenge him, the other soldiers joined their colleague and the whole thing escalated into a fight. He said one of the soldiers took a heavy plank and smashed Yakubu on the head.

Christianity Etc › Daniel Olukoya Clears Air On Fraud Allegation On UK Church by Gjrich(op): 9:30pm On Aug 22, 2020
Founder and General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Pastor Daniel Olukoya, has denied engaging in any fraudulent activities as being portrayed in some sections of the media, which he accused of being sponsored to tarnish his reputation.

This was contained in a statement signed by the founder’s media aide, Mr Collins Edomaruse on Saturday.

“It has become pertinent for the purpose of clarity to respond to the false allegations being peddled against the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries and our General Overseer – Dr. D. K. Olukoya in the social media particularly sponsored by SaharaReporters.

These allegations are seven (7) in number namely:

“No. 1 That Dr. Olukoya falsely claimed residence of US city of Maryland.

“Nothing can be further from the truth. Dr. Olukoya is a public figure nationally and internationally. His domicile is, therefore, a fact of public knowledge. The true position is that the Pastor who wanted to register MFM in Maryland inserted Dr Olukoya’s name without prior consultation with or knowledge of the G.O because he believed that Dr Olukoya should be involved but after he consulted a lawyer and received advice that a person’s name cannot be on the incorporation documents unless he is resident in Maryland, that registration was put in abeyance and allowed to lapse. The Pastor is still alive and all the evidence are there for all to see at the Company Registry in Maryland.

“No. 2 Allegation is that Dr. Olukoya Illegally Imported books into the United States and evaded payment of Customs duties on those books.”

“This is also untrue. Dr. Olukoya’s books are sold on Amazon. It is foolhardy for anyone to suggest that he brought in his books to US illegally when he can and has been doing so legally. This false allegation was pioneered by a former Pastor of MFM who tried to steal MFM Branch in Maryland. He conceived this lie as his defence to a civil Suit the Church brought against him in the County Court in Maryland. This concocted lie could best be described as the wild thrashings of a drowning man intent on bringing everybody down with him. However, in defence of this allegation, MFM brought its bookkeeper to testify in court who produced all the receipts of payment and customs documents and, in the end, the Judge not only thrashed the wild allegation but gave judgement in favour of MFM

“No. 3 is the allegation that the Trustees in the UK were suspended.

“This is completely false. They were never suspended. They are still in charge of the Church even up till now.

“No. 4 is the allegation of fraud against the Trustees of MFM UK.

“The trustees were never indicted. We can authoritatively say that no Trustee of MFM-UK has ever committed fraud.

“No. 5 is the allegation that Dr. Olukoya connived with someone to steal 150,000 pounds.

“This is a complete fabrication from the fevered minds of the defamers. Fortunately, all the people that took money illegally are still alive. The genesis of this allegation is that the lease of one of our branches in London contained a clause which stipulated that any party who broke the Lease for any reason before its expiration would pay a penalty of 150,000 British Pounds to the other party. It happened that the owner of the property broke the lease and sold the property to a third party which necessitated the Church relocating from the building. The property owners honoured their obligation and paid the penalty sum of 150,000 pounds which the Pastor of that branch somehow found a way of paying it into his personal account without informing the Headquarters and conspired with the external auditors to shield that income from discovery. It was much later that a member of that branch brought to the attention of Headquarters that such amount of money had been received by the Pastor.

“Headquarters immediately set up a panel to investigate the incident and give a fair hearing to the Pastor concerned. He attended the sitting of the panel and unequivocally admitted the theft. The Panel directed him to refund the money immediately. Upon receipt of the report of the Panel, the General Overseer issued the Pastor an ultimatum in writing to pay back the money within forty-eight (48) hours whereupon he promised to re-mortgage his house in London to comply. It was later brought to the attention of Dr. Olukoya that this ultimatum had not been complied with by the Pastor who, on his own, began to repay the money by instalments.”

The report added; “From the above narration, it is crystal clear to any unbiased mind that the money was stolen long before the Headquarters and Dr. Olukoya got to hear and that when they did, appropriate internal machinery were promptly put in place to investigate and recover it.

“The publication on the Charity Commission’s website which Sahara Reporters quoted out of context does not say or infer that Dr. Olukoya as Lead Trustee of the Church connived at the losses. It simply states, albeit on a false factual basis, that Dr. Olukoya agreed with and permitted the Pastor to repay the money by instalments. The question that flow from Sahara Reporter’s misconception and misrepresentation are:

“a. Since the synonyms of conniving are: plot, scheme, conspire, plan, hatch up, how can anybody do any of these in respect of an event that had already transpired without his knowledge?

“b. Would a person who connived at an act set up a Panel to probe that act and eventually set an ultimatum for the return of the stolen money?

“Suffice to say, at this point, that Dr. Olukoya has in letters dated 15th and 16 August 2019 writen to the Charity Commission to challenge the non-factual nature of the report written about him on their website. The Commission in a terse reply dated August 20th 2019 indicated that it would address that complaint.

“No. 6 is the allegation that MFM and Dr. Olukoya are land grabbers and were set to lose the MFM Prayer City land.

“Besides the fact that MFM has a Certificate of Occupancy, the falsehood of this allegation has been judicially determined by the fact that the lawyer who granted the interview from which Sahara Reporters made the false publication, as usual without independent research, has been damnified in damages for libel in the judgment of a High Court.

“No. 7 is the publication by Sahara Reporters that its Publisher Omoyele Sowore and his crew were beaten up and detained by MFM at its Prayer City.”

“The necessity to re-address this false allegation is underscored by the fact that the incident leading up to it is the foundation of Sowore’s deep-seated hatred for MFM and Dr Olukoya and the reason for his sustained rancid and venomous attacks on our Church and General Overseer.

“On the Cross-over service held at the MFM Prayer City in the night of December 2012 to the morning of January 2013, Sowore and his Crew, without being previously accredited like all other journalist and newsmen covering the event, gate-crashed and started filming and advancing towards the podium where Dr. Olukoya had already started preaching. Recall that this was a period when terrorist attacks and bomb blasts in places of worship were rampant and security was beefed up in such locations with a large presence of uniformed and plain-clothed Policemen, DSS operatives, Bomb detection Squads and other security operatives.

“These Security operatives stopped Sowore, and his crew from advancing further towards the podium took them out for questioning, and after they identified themselves, they were advised to restrict themselves to the area reserved for pressmen, but Sowore in his conceited perception of himself as having a larger than life image and reputation took offence at the suggestion and left with his crew only to subsequently concoct and publish those lies; and has not relented since then.

“Our members and friends are advised to just ignore these false and malicious publications for what they are.

“As for those who have made it their preoccupation and livelihood to pour filth on our Church and General Overseer, we love you as God’s creation and will continue to pray that you cease from your steady decline into perdition. We also commend to you the words of the scriptures in Isaiah 33:1 – “Woe to thee that spoilest and thou wast not spoiled; and dealest treacherously, and they dealt not treacherously with thee! when thou shalt cease to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled; and when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.”

Politics › NBA Invitation Withdrawal: Goodbye To El Rufai‘s 2023 Ambition- Femi Falana, SAN by Gjrich(op): 4:09pm On Aug 21, 2020
Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State has always been a defiant man who appeared to care less what others think of him. However, his reaction, through his spokesperson, Muyiwa Adekeye, that the governor chose to be sober, probably indicates that the withdrawal of invitation given to El Rufai to speak at the upcoming NBA virtual conference really got to the governor.

Surprisingly, El Rufai‘s statement, through Adekeye, was rather timid, very unlike the Kaduna State governor. Why the timid response, you may ask; this may have more to do with the 2023 presidential election. The withdrawn invitation, coming just few days after he was upbraided for his handling of ongoing killings in Southern Kaduna, might just have been too much for El Rufai to bear. An almost certain death to his rumored 2023 presidential aspirations.

For a man rumored to be interested in the presidential race of 2023, either as main candidate or as running mate, two major controversies in the span of three days isn't good for his public perception. It could be a rude awakening because the governor always had influence with President Obasanjo, and now President Buhari.

The fact that he was partly credited by some to be responsible for drafting Buhari to contest in 2015 after the General had declared he was no longer interested in contesting, after three failed attempts, could have made El Rufai to believe in himself as larger than life. Perhaps that wrong perception of himself (by himself) could have been behind why he made statements to effect that a southern politician shouldn't necessarily succeed the current president.

The final straw to El Rufai’s NBA misfortune may have come from Femi Falana, SAN, who wrote a letter to the organizers of the upcoming NBA conference. Falana was able to raise other issues on El Rufai’s antecedents which other NBA members didn't mention in their condemnation of the now withdrawn invitation. While others had concentrated on the unfortunate killings of people in Southern Kaduna, Falana through his letter, implied that El Rufai was a leopard that can't change the spots on its skin.

Excerpts from Falana’s letter:

"You will agree with us that Mallam El Rufai’s penchant for disobeying court orders is inconsistent with the aims and object(ives) of the NBA which includes promotion of the rule of law." He wrote.

This statement may appear brief but to El Rufai, it's a signal to the type of opposition he's likely to come up against, if at all he decides to throw his hat into the 2023 presidential ring. This is further complicated by the fact that one of the strongest allegations against the current president is that he doesn't obey court orders. Hence having another man with similar antecedents, either as President or Vice would just not fly, for many.

For El Rufai, this is just the beginning. If he has been so strongly opposed to speak at an NBA conference, just imagine the level of opposition he's likely to face while trying to sell his candidacy to other professional organizations, pro-democracy groups, pressure groups, christian religious organizations, etc.

That's not all, many of his ‘transgressions’ as former Minister of the FCT, Abuja, would begin to reappear.
Furthermore, his handling of the southern Kaduna crisis mean potential electorates are more likely to view him as an extension of Buhari's 'legacy'.

What an irony

Politics › Saudi Arabia Does Not Recognize The State Of Israel But Buy Weapon From Israel by Gjrich(op): 3:46pm On Aug 21, 2020
It is a known fact that the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, after she conquered the Arab world enraged a lot of countries of the world.
Virtually all the Arab countries refused to recognize Israel. Saudi Arabia is one of the many Arab countries that have refused to recognize the sovereign state of Israel.

However, the irony here is, Saudi Arabia buys military equipment from Israel that she doesn't recognize. One of the military equipment she bought from Israel is Pegasus, the electronic spyware so many countries are desirous of getting. It is a powerful mobile phone software used to spy on people. The spyware helped Saudi Arabia in killing the dissident journalist, Jamal khashoggi some time ago.

Similarly, so many other Israeli Enemies are seeking ways to establish ties with Israel. This is because the creativity of the Jewish people is unprecedented. Their technologies are miraculous in nature, and irresistible. Israel is not up to 80 years, but her military and technology have advanced more than those of countries that have spanned through centuries.

Though Israel very small in size, the country may still topple America as the Super Power in the future.
But that is only possible when the position of super power consists not in size and population.

What are your thoughts on this?

Foreign Affairs › Tension As Iran Seized United Arab Emirate Ship Due To Peace Deal With Israel by Gjrich(op): 5:10pm On Aug 20, 2020
The recent diplomatic move by United Arab Emirate to normalize relationship with the State of Israel angered Arab/Muslims countries especially Israel arch-enemy the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is an arch-enemy of the State of Israel and it major foreign policy is always against the State of Israel.

Tension is high between the United Arab Emirate and Islamic Republic of Iran as the two oil rich countries face each other after the landmark normalization between the United Arab Emirate and State of Israel.

This Monday an Emirati ship was seized by the Islamic Republic of Iran border guards and it crew was detained due to illegal traffic in Iranian water. This happened the same day United Arab Emirate killed two Iranian fishermen and seized a boat.

The United Arab Emirate has expressed it deepest regret as regards the situation surrounding the death of the two Iranian fishermen and the United Arab Emirate is ready to pay compensation.

The two countries are not on a good terms since the historic deal between the State of Israel and the United Arab Emirate.

The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani released a statement immediately after the agreement that the United Arab Emirate made huge mistake in reaching a deal to establish diplomatic relationship with the State of Israel and called it betrayal of the Palestine. He further said that the United Arab Emirate better need to be mindful as they have committed a huge mistake, a treacherous act.

This may have caused the unnecessary tension between the two countries.

Foreign Affairs › Sudan And Israel Say They Are Close To Reaching A Peace Agreement by Gjrich(op): 11:50am On Aug 20, 2020
Officials Say Israel, Sudan Close to Peace Agreement
Israel and Sudan say they are close to reaching a peace agreement — setting the stage for a possible second dramatic diplomatic breakthrough for Israel with its Arab neighbors in a matter of days.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel and Sudan on Tuesday said they are close to reaching a peace agreement — setting the stage for a possible second dramatic diplomatic breakthrough for Israel with its Arab neighbors in a matter of days.

A Sudanese Foreign Ministry official announced that his government is “looking forward to concluding a peace agreement with Israel,” drawing a pledge from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “do all that's needed” to wrap up a deal.

The announcements came days after Israel and the United Arab Emirates announced an agreement to establish formal diplomatic ties.

While Sudan does not have the resources and influence of the UAE, it has a far more hostile history toward Israel.

Sudan hosted the landmark Arab conference after the 1967 Mideast war where eight Arab countries approved the “three no's": no peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel and no negotiations.

In 1993, the U.S. designated Sudan a state sponsor of terrorism in part for its support of a number of anti-Israel militant groups, including Hamas and Hezbollah.

But in recent years those hostilities have softened, and both countries have expressed readiness to normalize relations.

Sky News Arabia quoted a Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying his government looked forward to a peace agreement “based on equality and Sudanese interests.”

“There is no reason to continue hostility between Sudan and Israel,” the spokesman, Haidar Badawi, was quoted as saying.

“We don't deny that there are communications” with Israel, he added, saying both countries would gain much from a deal.

But Sudan’s Acting Foreign Minister Omar Qama al-Din sought to distance himself from the spokesman's comments, saying in a statement the remarks were received “with astonishment.” He said his ministry did not discuss the issue of ties with Israel.

A Sudanese government official told The Associated Press that deliberations between Sudanese and Israeli officials have been going on for months, with help from Egypt, the UAE and the U.S.

“It’s a matter of time. We are finalizing everything. The Emirati move encouraged us and helped calm some voices within the government who were afraid of backlash from the Sudanese public,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

In February, Netanyahu met Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the head of Sudan’s transitional government, during a trip to Uganda where they pledged to pursue normalization. The meeting was held secretly and only announced after the fact.

In a statement Tuesday, Netanyahu said Israel, Sudan and the entire region will benefit from a deal. “We will do all that's needed to turn this vision into a reality,” he said.

After last week's announcement with the UAE, Netanyahu predicted that other Arab countries would soon follow suit.

An Israeli deal with Sudan would mark a new setback for the Palestinians, who have long counted on the Arab world to press Israel to make concessions to them as a condition for normalization. That wall of Arab support had long served as one of the Palestinians’ few points of leverage against Israel.

The internationally recognized Palestinian Authority severed ties with the White House after President Donald Trump recognized contested Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December 2017. The Palestinians have rejected Trump’s Mideast plan released early this year, which heavily favors Israel, as being unfairly biased. They have condemned the Emirati decision as treason.

With the Palestinians not speaking to the White House, the Trump administration has adopted a Mideast policy that essentially ignores them while pursuing a broader Arab-Israeli rapprochement. U.S. officials believe that Palestinians will eventually tire of isolation if they see fellow Arabs pressing ahead with improved relations with Israel and ultimately agree to negotiate a settlement, even if it means backing down on some of their most significant demands.

At the same time, Arab countries have become increasingly willing to pursue interests that come at the expense of the Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday that he would reject a similar agreement to the Israeli-UAE deal made by another Arab country.

Addressing a PLO meeting in Ramallah, Abbas said that other Arab countries “are moving in secrecy and in public saying ‘why not?' We are totally rejecting that.”

Sudan is desperate to lift sanctions linked to its listing by the U.S. as a state sponsor of terror — a key step toward ending its isolation and rebuilding its economy after the popular uprising that toppled longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir last year.

A Sudanese official had acknowledged in February that the meeting with Netanyahu was orchestrated by the United Arab Emirates and aimed at helping to remove the terror listing, which dates back to the 1990s, when Sudan briefly hosted Osama bin Laden and other wanted militants.

Under al-Bashir, Sudan was also believed to have served as a pipeline for Iran to supply weapons to Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. Israel was believed to have been behind airstrikes in Sudan that destroyed a convoy in 2009 and a weapons factory in 2012.

Last week's announcement made the UAE the third Arab country to establish full diplomatic ties with Israel.

Egypt was the first, in 1979, followed by Jordan in 1994. Unofficial ties with Gulf Arab nations have also grown in recent years, fueled by shared enmity toward Iran.

A deal with Sudan could also give Netanyahu a boost at home.

Netanyahu has seen his personal popularity drop due to the coronavirus crisis, which has ravaged the Israeli economy. He also faces widespread criticism while on trial for charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

Israel has long courted African support. In exchange for its expertise in security and other fields, Israel wants African states to side with it at the U.N. General Assembly and other international bodies that have long favored the Palestinians.

Israel renewed diplomatic relations with Guinea in 2016. After Netanyahu visited Chad for a renewal of ties in 2019, it was reported that Israel was working to formalize ties with Sudan.

Culture is different in many places, what is acceptable in your county may be an abomination when you get to another country.
This is the case with the people of Isreal as it is the only country where women are allowed to walk around with M16 Assault rifle.

Politics › Oshiomhole Replies Saliu Lukman, "Says I Won’t Fight With A Pig" by Gjrich(op): 10:32pm On Aug 17, 2020
FORMER National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Monday said that he was not going to respond to the allegations made against him by the Progressive Governors Forum, Saliu Lukewarm over plot to come back as Chairman of the ruling party.

Comrade Oshiomhole said it takes an empty brain to suggest that he wants to stage a come back to become the national chairman.

He stated this while speaking to State House correspondents after meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Asked to react to the allegation by the Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Lukewarm, that he wants to come back as Chairman, he said he would not engage in any fight with those he described as cowards within the governor’s forum using the DG to attack him.

He said, “You want me to engage in a fight with a pig? If you engage in a fight with a pig, the pig already is stained by its nature and you will wear your white garment, and in my own case, khaki to go and wrestle with a pig? I will not.

“You see, what I want the media to interrogate, how does winning Edo.
when I was removed as national chairman, Edo was APC. So do I have to win Edo to become the chairman? Do I look so unemployed? I’m 68.

“So, what they don’t understand is that it is not the office of chairman that makes me who I am. It is my pedigree from my days as a labourer in the textile industry to be the general secretary of textile workers all over Nigeria and becoming the president of NLC.

“There is no village I go to that people do not know me and is this that I used to override The Godfathers in Edo State for two consecutive terms and even got the governor elected through elections, no violence before becoming the national chairman.

“So, if you remove the office, is like our president now, maybe I cannot compare myself to him, but it is like President Muhammadu Buhari by 2023, when his tenure would have elapsed as President but those who believe in him, in 2024 and beyond, any time they see him, that trust they have in him will always be there.

“He bonds with the people, that bond was not created by the fact that he is the president, in fact, he became the president because of that bond.

“So, it takes an empty brain to suggest that Oh Oshiomhole wants to stage a come back to become the national chairman. For what? To go and do a resit?

“So my attitude is not to reply the noise and it is coming from somebody who says he is an employee, an appointee of Progressives Governors Forum, it is just like the cowards that are using him are not able to come out.

“Otherwise, you should ask this guy, who is now an election expert. He contested for senate against Makarfi, he lost. He even contested against governor El-Rufai during the primaries and he lost before Fayemi unilaterally appointed him the DG.

“So, if he is now the spokesman abusing me and all of that, you want to drag me to his level? No! A gentleman does not wrestle with a pig if you do you will always be stained and I don’t want to get into that.”

Politics › $4.7m Cars Order From S/leone, After NASS Lawmakers Rejected My Cars-innoson by Gjrich(op): 5:24pm On Aug 16, 2020
I received order for $4.7m cars from S/Leone after NASS lawmakers rejected my vehicles– Innoson

Founder and chairman of Nigeria’s automobile company, Innoson Motors, Innocent Chukwuma.

…’Motorcycle price was crashed from N150, 000 to N60, 000, trying to do same with cars’
…Explains why auto assembly plants in Nigeria collapsed
By Nnamdi Ojiego

Chief Innocent Chukwuma is the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing, IVM, a foremost automobile maker in Nigeria.

In this exclusive interview after a facility tour of his Nnewi automobile factory, Chukwuma reveals the secrets behind his success in the automobile industry, why he has never failed in any business ventures, his major challenges, his new factory in Imo State and planned partnership with a foreign company. Excerpts:

Some Nigerians still think that Innoson is just an assembling plant and not a car production company. What is your status?

You are here now and you have seen things yourself. Let me use this opportunity to say this once again; Innoson does not assemble vehicles, we manufacture. We build 100 percent vehicle body here and over 60 percent of the products used in manufacturing the vehicle are gotten from Nigeria.

We make all the carcass of all our vehicles here. We only import some engines and electrical components but produce all the plastic parts here. We have produced many new vehicles according to the demands of our customers and what they need those vehicles for. Even if they need what we do not have, we make the mould and produce their request and to specifications. That is why we are a vehicle manufacturing company, not assembling company.

Despite the challenging terrain of the automobile industry in Nigeria, you have succeeded in making a name for yourself. What’s your driving force?

Yes, I started this business from the scratch. So, it may not be out of place to say that I have made a name for myself. However, I still believe that I haven’t reached where I want to be. It might interest you to know that I never fail in any business I have ventured into.

This is because when you go into any business, you have to put your own ideas in it and when you do, the difference will be clear and you can make more money than others. You can also drop the business when you think there isn’t much interest in it again. So, to succeed in any business, don’t follow the crowd, always bring your own initiatives. With that, you will be able to make profits.

That has been my driving force, always looking for new ideas that are different from what everybody knows. For example, when you are into a particular business and it is no longer as lucrative and profitable as it used to because many people have ventured into it, you can leave the business for those people who lack ideas and go into a new business. This is because, as they are coming into the business, the profit margin will continue to diminish. So you leave it for them and find another fresh business idea to develop.

By the time they understand or realise how profitable the new idea is, you have already made your money and leave it for them. However, if the business is still convenient for you and gives you what you want, you can continue.

But if you feel that what you are getting there is not enough, leave it for those people who came to spoil it and develop a new one. That is the system I operate. I started trading in motorcycle parts with my brother. I started by buying from companies like Leventis that were importing the parts then. From there, I started importing myself. Later, I developed a complete motorcycle and not just the parts. I was the first person to develop complete motorcycle in Nigeria.

Because of my experience in the spare parts business, I found out that to bring motorcycle parts and couple them here in Nigeria was cheaper than bringing them as a complete motorcycle. So I decided to give it a try and it worked. I brought my own in parts and hired local mechanics to assemble and couple them. With this, my own cost was 40 percent cheaper. So, while others were selling at N150, 000, I was selling at N80, 000. Then, the cost of second hand motorcycle was N90, 000. People who used to buy second hand motorcycle decided to be buying my own since it was brand new and cheaper.

That’s how I benched my competitors who were selling at N150, 000. So, they had no choice than to adopt my strategy in importing their motorcycles. When they started copying my method, I veered into local production of plastic components of motorcycle parts so that I could be bringing only the iron components from abroad.

This also helped in bringing the price of my motorcycle down to N60, 000 which has been my aim from the onset. My competitors also discovered that it was better for them to buy plastic components from my company than bringing it from abroad. So, they started buying plastic components from me. With that, I left the motorcycle business for them.

Venturing into vehicle manufacturing

After some time, I decided to do what I did in motorcycle in vehicle. So, that’s what I’m doing today. I ventured into vehicle manufacturing immediately I became weak on motorcycle. I changed my focus to vehicle. I studied about vehicle production for about seven years before I could start. When I was building this factory, all my good friends and everybody I knew were asking me why did I venture into the business?

They said all the people who ventured into it in Nigeria failed. I told them to check all the businesses I have done, that none has failed. Before I entered into vehicle manufacturing, I have seen why others failed. And I told them that I would remove that which made others to fail and I did. That’s why I started by manufacturing and not by assembling. The people who failed started by assembling vehicles in Nigeria. And in that case, if anything happened to the parent company, the assembling plant here would lose because foreigners are not interested in building anything here.

So, to avoid the pitfalls of others, I went and studied where we had problems and I paid for professionals, expatriates who came here and trained my people. I brought them to Nigeria, about 60 of them, in the first year we started this factory. Some of them finished under one year and left by the second year, I had about 42 and in the third year, I had about 15. Today, I have only eight.

Most vehicle manufacturers are switching from petrol to electric engine. Are you thinking in that direction?

I never built engine for the first time. I only build body and buy engine. What we do here is building complete motor body. Therefore, if electric is better, what I will do is to partner with electric company to supply me electric engine. And in that case, I won’t lose anything. If electric vehicles become the new normal, we’ll switch over to electric cars.

Crime › REVEALED: Full Names Of The 23 Nigerians On Death Row For Drugs In Saudi Arabia by Gjrich(op): 3:58pm On Aug 15, 2020
As things stand, at least 23 more Nigerians, according to TheNation, are destined to suffer Afolabi's fate, having been convicted for flouting the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Control Law, issued under Royal Decree No. M/39 dated 8/7/1428AH, which is punishable by death.

There has been so much public uproar condemning both the Nigerian and Saudi Arabian governments after the execution of a Nigerian woman, Kudirat Adeshola Afolabi, who was found guilty of drug trafficking.

While Nigerians insisted Afolabi was only a victim of drug syndicate group at Nigerian airports, both governments maintained she was actually guilty of the crime.

Following Afolabi's execution, it was revealed that another Nigerian, Saheed Sobade, was facing the prospect of death in Saudi Arabia after being nabbed with 1,183 grams of cocaine powder in Jeddah, a Saudi Arabian port city on the Red Sea and gateway for pilgrimages to the Islamic holy cities Mecca and Medina.

The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Nigeria responded to widespread criticism of Afolabi's execution by insisting that all legal and judicial procedures were observed.

"It is well-known for all those interested in travelling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that the penalty for drug trafficking is the death sentence and the said sentence is applied on all persons convicted without any exceptions, as long as the evidence is established against them, and this is conveyed to every person prior to his trip to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," it said.

They were arrested between 2016 and 2017 at the King Abdul-Aziz International Airport, Jeddah and Prince Muhammad bin Abdu- Aziz International Airport, Madinah.

Foreign Affairs › Breaking: Somali President And Deputy Exchange Blow In Public (Video) by Gjrich(op): 1:40pm On Aug 15, 2020
In a fairly disagreeable event, the Somali president and deputy exchange Antony Joshua kind of blows until they tumbled to the ground. They sat next to each other and near one another in a sort of public interview.

They clasped hands like there was something the two of them wanted to have before they got up and blew each other effortlessly. It took a bunch of men to settle the two leaders who were caught up with fighting one another.

This is a very rare occurrence to happen anywhere in the world. It is not only embarrassing but also a very bad example from the people who should be preaching peace and acting as good role models to the entire country.

This is an extremely uncommon event that happens anyplace on the planet. In addition to the fact that it is humiliating, it is an extremely terrible case of the individuals who ought to lecture harmony and peace in as great good examples for the entire nation.

They battled out in the public and in front of the cameras. The law can make risky divisions between supporters of the president and his deputy. They should set their pride aside and apologize to their residents to ensure the nation remains joined together in peace and harmony.

Politics › Buhari-led Administration Has Mortgaged The Future Of Nigerians-yerima Shettima by Gjrich(op): 3:06am On Aug 15, 2020

He lamented that the current government had failed in carrying out its promises to Nigeria in the area of security, fighting against corruption and diversification of the economy.

The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum, AYCF, has berated the President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government over Nigeria’s current debt profile.

AYCF President-General, Yerima Shettima in a chat with DAILY POST, said the Buhari-led administration has mortgaged the future of Nigerians, in view of the country’s current debt profile.

Shettima made the comment while insisting that Buhari’s administration has not done well for Nigerians since assuming power.

He lamented that the current government had failed in carrying out its promises to Nigeria in the area of security, fighting against corruption and diversification of the economy.

When asked if the present administration has done well for Nigeria, Shettima said: “No, the present government came into power based on three things and people believe those three things are the problems which are insecurity, fight against corruption and diversification of the economy.

“Are we today happy with insecurity, definitely no because it has become a major challenge. We were far better where we came from than where we are today.

“Secondly, are they actually fighting corruption? Of course, that is no story, the man in charge of fighting graft has found himself in a very big dilemma.

“Thirdly on economy, is it the hardship or the high profile debt that has become a burden because of the debt incurred now, I don’t think out grandchildren would be able to pay back. Our future has been mortgaged.”

“My advice to Nigerians is that if we are determined we can work collectively and come out of this. All hands must be on deck to work out things and occupy political space and pave way for those we think are competent without minding if they have money or not.

“We should ensure we sacrifice for the country so the right people can come in and reboot and reconstruct the country again. We can’t continue like these and if we miss the next election, that would be the end of Nigeria, God forbid,” he said.

Foreign Affairs › Breaking News: Israel And United Arab Emirates Strike Historic Peace Accord by Gjrich(op): 12:00am On Aug 14, 2020
Israel and the United Arab Emirates have reached a historic peace deal that will see the Gulf power normalising diplomatic relations with the Jewish state.

The deal, brokered by the US, would mean the UAE will become only the third Arab state to have full diplomatic ties with Israel, after Egypt and Jordan.

“HUGE breakthrough today! Historic Peace Agreement between our two GREAT friends, Israel and the United Arab Emirates!”, US President Donald Trump said on Twitter.

The UAE, a staunch US ally, has been increasing its intelligence and security co-operation with Israel in recent years as both share common goals in countering Iran’s influence in the region and fighting Islamic extremism.

Under Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Abu Dhabi’s crown prince and the UAE’s de facto leader, the Gulf state has pursued an increasingly assertive foreign policy across the Middle East that has barely disguised its burgeoning ties to Israel.

The UAE move will be a significant victory for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who regularly touts his success in improving Israel's relations with Arab states that were once sworn enemies.

As part of the deal, Israel has agreed to suspend annexing parts of the occupied West Bank. Mr Netanyahu had promised to annex areas of the Palestinian territory as he campaigned in elections this year, but the process stalled in recent weeks.
