@ zoraro rotfl @ ur assessment that "christianity is in serious trouble". i beg to disagree! u're right that Jesus' death and resurrection is the basis of christianity. u don't have to believe that it happened, even before Jesus ascended to heaven there were allegations that he didn't resurrect, yet see what christianity has become today. several "intellectuals" predicted that christianity would end in their lifetime due to "lack of evidence". they've all died and centuries after christianity is still around. some of them derided christianity as ignorance yet some of the highest institutions of learning today have christian backgrounds. these books you're quoting aren't new, they've been around for ages. yet, christianity still waxes strong. christianity has been severely persecuted yet it grows even stronger. it would seem that it grows better in the face of persecution. consider China with a pretty large number of christians for a country that actually outlawed the religion. in the 2000 years of christianity, other religions have sprung up and died, but this hasn't happened to christianity. there are really no new views being held now. christianity has been rocked by crisis several times in different countries but always comes back stronger. i live in Hungary, a country that was under communism 20 years ago, christianity is not dead here at all. it's not as booming as in the US but its not dead. what's more, a good number of the few enthusiasts are young people, all what you have to say against christianity or religion has been said over and over again for ages. and by influential and intelligent people. yet, the majority of the population still seek God through one religion or the other. people all over the world see God/religion as the answer to their lives. they are seeking and finding him. forget it, you're not going to change anything. you're not going to come with the revelation that would finally put an end to christianity or religion at large. you can say that it's all a fluke, your opinion. you can ignore it or deride it, your choice. but put an end to it, you can't! |
Chrisbenogor:you won't get anything better than the bible and the Holy Spirit. any other human argument for God is less than God's revelation of his self in those two ways. but you probably don't believe the bible is accurate and probably doubt the existence of the Holy Spirit also, considering he is God, the truth of the matter is belief (in any God) is a matter of faith, you decide based on what you've heard/seen/experienced to either believe or not to. if you've read the bible and are not convinced, you can try praying to God and see if the Holy Spirit can help. but then, you don't even believe there's a God to start with. @ kuns, we don't believe what we dont know, we know what we believe. you say what we believe is false. we believe in Jesus but you say he is not who the bible says he is, that's your opinion, you're entitled to it. we have not seen God, but we believe his word and love him, our choice. we have tangible experiences, through the Holy Spirit in us christianity is a living reality. by the way, Kuns i don't presume that you have met your God, have you? i really don't understand why people feel the need to prove anything to anybody, or to have someone prove something to them. what is important is that you hear the message of Jesus and either accept it as truth or reject it as false. No quarrel. i've had islam, mormonism, jehova's witness preached to me but i chose not to accept. it's a personal choice, we can infer from luke 16 that God is done with sending physical proofs to the earth so if you're still waiting for a further proof i think u should forget about it and enjoy ur unbelief. |
the bible didn't explain exactly how everything happened so the best we can do is speculate, it's possible that Cain got married before going to Nod, and while he was there they conceived their kids, since the bible's mention of his wife was that he knew his wife in Nod, and the bible uses the word to imply impregnation. or it is possible that he met her there and she was one of his nieces or sisters. we don't know how old adam was when cain and abel were born but he was 103 when seth was born. and eve saw seth as a replacement for abel even though she had other kids so she probably had him soon after abel's death. considering adam was never a baby, he could have given birth to cain and abel right after being expelled from eden. and many more kids in between then and the birth of seth. these kids could have gone around and started their own small communities by marrying from among themselves and having kids. incest wasn't a sin then, God hadn't given the law. and if God created only 2 people and told them to replenish the earth obviously he expected inbreeding amongst their offspring. also, they must have been very fertile back then and they probably started mating very early. obviously they had much longer reproductive years than we do. so in almost 100 years till Seth was born Adam could have had loads and loads of kids (considering God who gives children wanted them to replenish) and these children could have had even more and more children. concerning the people Cain was scared of, it is possible that they were another community, of his siblings and relatives. obviously adam and eve must have had loads of other kids. so it wasn't a world of only the 2 parents and 2 sons. i know there are lots of other non-biblical explanations about how human beings came to fill up the earth. but if you are talking about the bible's version, it doesn't give exact details about it so we can only speculate. well, at least for people who take the bible literally. |
i dont know about the zeus, romalus and remus thing but i dont agree it is the genetic heritage of any race, sure it has been around for ages, but it has been a conscious choice all along. whatever, about David and Jonathan, the bible portrays them as loving one another as brothers, not as lovers. david had been anointed already before he met jonathan so why would they make him king if he'd had homosexual relations. homosexuality in israel was punishable by death. does the verse you quoted sound out of place to you for a conversation between brothers? what's strange in david saying jonathan had been pleasant unto him? or that the love they shared was more than the love of a woman? jonathan, who saved david from his father's rage several times. jonathan who could have seen david as a threat to his becoming king yet helped him. wouldn't you feel that way towards a guy who did that for you and isn't even your relative? i would, and i'm straight. |
revelation from the Holy Spirit is personal. as i said, there are differing opinions but christianity is based on the bible's revelation of Jesus and the Holy Spirit's also. you have to understand that we believe that the bible is the word of God. |
Kuns, christianity is based on Jesus as is revealed in the bible and through the Holy Ghost. there are many other religions that have similar or not so similar stories from creation to the present but since we follow Jesus and the bible says he was crucified it's what we accept. it wouldn't be christianity anymore if we accept any other because his death is one of the fundamental doctrines of christianity. |
Kuns, the fact that the anglican church is ordaining homosexuals doesn't disprove anything. christianity in many western orthodox churches is very different now compared to what it was when they were spreading the gospel round the world. many europeans say they are christians out of routine but hardly go to church and cant be bothered with God or the bible. homosexuality is still a sin, people have the right to accept or reject God's word. |
hmm, what's the version u quoted? |
@ topic, God already came down once but most people didnt believe. they ended up crucifying him and that was a nation that believed in his existence and were expecting him. how much more now that people dont even believe he exists, i dont think it would change much. i think it's better for him to reveal his self to non-believing people personally. i've heard people give testimonies of getting convicted personally by God. that might work better. besides i think the idea of faith is believing (putting all your hopes, trust) in a God you've never seen. so there would be no faith if God had to come and physically convince everyone that he is real. i really dont see why people should quarrel over this issue. if you believe in God, good for you. if you don't, good for you. the world is largely secular and so no one is under any compulsion to have a religion. no need to insult someone for having a different opinion. just as you think your opinion is the right one, the other person also has a strong belief in his opinion. |
that's interesting Kuns, the bible doesnt say anything about agreeable and disagreeable spirits |
it is possible dat while writing the story of Genesis, Moses wrote in Aramaic (or whateva language) that Cain travelled to the land of Wandering, or maybe one of Adams children travelled and set up his abode in that place, if it was inhabited it must have been Adam's offspring cos they were the only humans. the bible refers to Eve as the mother of all living |
i've often wondered so myself. but i read somewhere that nod means 'wandering' so he went to the land of wandering. and that his wife must have been either his sister or niece. adam and eve had many other kids after cain and abel, though the bible talks about only those 2 and seth. abraham also married his half-sister but this was before God gave the law to moses prohibiting such |
i agree, tithing shouldnt be to the pastor but to God. i'd rather give to a poor beggar than a pastor who is richer than me. i think each person should give whatever they think is appropriate from their resources back to God. in whatever way he directs you. can be more or less than 10%. KunleOshob:shey? me too, |
@ Chrisbenogor, i'm guessing what you mean is God doesn't condemn homosexuals, right? because homosexuality is everything that has to do with sexual attraction between people of the same sex. the sexual act, and all. God does condemn homosexuality in the bible (Romans 1) but not homosexuals, Jesus didn't come to condemn us (it is sin that condemns) but to save us. |
huxley:actually in Ezekiel God said that no one would perish for the sins of another, who is not in some sense worthy of death for his own sins. the israelites sinned continously but he never punished a righteous generation for the sins of their ancestors. and that was in the OT (God was dealing only with the Israelites). in the NT, Jesus saved a woman from serving the punishment she deserved under the religious law of the time for adultery, that's more like the justice of the God of the bible. in the OT, God dealt with nations. it was Israel and the others. Israel was his 'child' and he was merciful to those other nations that were merciful to Israel and when they faced opposition from other nations he fought for them, in the NT, he deals with individuals and not just israelites but anyone who cares to listen. @ Kuns, i dont think it was "added", it was translated. the bible wasnt originally in english and the only english word the translators could come up with to convey the same message was God. by the way, Allah isn't a proper name, it means God in arabic and i think the word was in usage before Mohammed. i dont know about Eloh but i guess it's not a proper name also. Moses asked God for his name and the reply God gave him was Yahweh (Jehova) translated to mean "I AM THAT I AM" in the english bible. the Jews revered the name and in order to avoid profaning the name, they used Adonai or El- instead (meaning Lord or God). |
i guess i should, but i seriously doubt that i can. at least, not with my present state of mind. the best i can do is try to erase him from my memory and avoid meeting him |
the bible says homosexuality is a sin. but so also is lying, stealing, fornication, murder, covetousness, drunkeness, witchcraft, they all have the same consequence. i dont know how many times homosexuality is mentioned in the bible, but it definitely didn't get as much mention as fornication, lying, false witnessing, oppressing the poor (which are more prevalent today than homosexuality). i believe what we should do is all try to be obedient to the bible and seek God's help to overcome any of these sins we might be guilty of. according to the bible, Jesus is the remedy God has given for all kinds of sin. so basically, coming to Jesus is the starting point. as for homosexuals, like all other sinners they need our prayers. u can't talk someone out of sin, it's the Holy Spirit who convicts. also, sin is largely a matter of the heart so even if someone abstains from homosexual acts but lusts after it in his heart it's still a sin (the same goes for every other sin). God created us all the same. he didnt make us liars, murderers, drunks, homosexuals. we all face different kinds of temptations and we fall for one or another. so we make the choice to sin, knowingly or unknowingly. |
Ogaga4Luv:i think u answered ur question already: many hundreds of years, how about the writers read the scrolls of previous writers whom they quoted? |
all this argument all because fellow nigerians are coming home. |
i put this in family cos i couldnt figure out where else to. please i need information on the legal way to go about changing my surname outside marriage/divorce. i've searched online but i can't find any information that has to do with nigeria. i want to change my surname to one that was previously used by my family. is it allowed? also, i dont have a birth certificate cos my parents never bothered to collect one from the hospital. is it possible to go and get one from them now in the name i want to change to (that was my name at birth). would i still be able to use my passport (it's valid till 2012)? will the visas and residence permit on it still be valid when i change my name? is it possible to change the name on my passport? is it possible to get a new passport if the old one is still valid and isn't missing? my high school certificates all bear my present name. would i have to inform the school when i change the name? do i really have to go to the ministry in abuja in person? is it a difficult process; do i need to get a lawyer? how long, and how much does this process require? |
The Mark of the Lion trilogy by Francine Rivers, each of the three books made a great impact on my life. |
Most Enid Blyton books, particularly the Mallory Towers, St. Claires, Secret Seven and Famous Five series. I was introduced to these books when I was 5 and over 15 years after I still enjoy reading them, There are loads of other books I read over and over. like Heidi by Johanna Spyri, If I really enjoy reading a book, I can read it a couple of times again. The only books I can't read more than once are Mills&Boon, Silhouette etc, There are some nigerian books i used to read in high school. I read most of them several times but haven't come across them in years. If I do though, I'd love to read them again. I cant remember the authors but some of d books are: bottled leopard, concubine, evbu my love |
i love rock, particularly christian rock. i've always heard that rock music is satanic and tended to stay away from it but there was a time when i was hearing so much of it on theme radio in shopping malls and public places and before i knew it i was always singing one rock song or the other. then i noticed there were lots of them on MTV daily. anyway, now i enjoy rock though i'm usually wary of heavy metal, all along i didnt even know there were christian rock songs. all i'd heard about rock music from christian circles were negative. then i accidentally came across Jeremy Camp and Casting Crowns on youtube and their songs actually blessed my life. the messages were just what i needed to raise my spirits at the time. and i've been hooked to christian rock since then. i don't believe that rock as a genre is satanic. any kind of music can be satanic. i think, though, that rock music helps listeners handle strong emotions (especially anger, ). |
i went through the POISE website. it looks like a business solutions thing. I am a student and would like to know if there are finishing schools that really teach etiquette, home management, hostessing and other important skills for ladies. I'd also like to find out about accent reduction schools in nigeria |
is it a credit or debit card? |
Is it possible to get a debit card for an account in any Nigerian bank? I checked on First Bank's website but their requirements are that you have to open an account with an initial deposit of at least USD625, and show proof of income to get a MasterCard. Intercontinental Bank seems to issue credit cards for less but you also need to have proof of employment and a domiciliary account, Is it possible to open a domiciliary account if you are not employed? I'm assuming it's like a foreign currency account; what's d minimum deposit required? So how do Nigerians buy things online? I need a debit card (preferably) that can work with Paypal. I noticed last summer that there were these Interswitch ATM cards that everyone had in Nigeria. Can they be used online? |
Mamajama:it would be wiser to fight them before they blow up 3rd mainland bridge but obviously d government doesnt know how to deal with them, much less the whole country. if they did they would have ended this problem before now. i hope this people dont destroy this country |
thanks a lot, busaboy |
Is it safe to download programs from Limewire? i see there are lots of games there. how do i know which is a virus? |
Van Vicker is frigging HOTTT!!! can't believe he is married with kids; he looks so young, looks like a younger Ramsey Nouah. he should act more 9ja films |
i just read a Jehovah's Witness book where they explained their aversion to blood transfusions. they say it's in obedience to God's command to keep away from blood. they argue that if you are not to drink blood you shouldnt have it infused into your system. afterall, they say, if you are on doctor's orders to stay off caffeine you would not abstain from coffee only to have it injected into your veins, personally, i think that practice is sick, why die if your life can be saved. many surgeries require blood transfusions so why do they even go in for surgeries and put their lives at risk i dont think that doctor should have been banned, he only respected a patient's wish. i believe everyone has the right to choose what kind of medical treatment he/she would receive. |
i read somewhere that when you still care about it, and still think about whether or not you have committed the unforgivable sin then you haven't. |
