where are the children? by Mary Higgins Clark |
Just finished reading Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, it's a great book. @ Eeyore, i remember Eze goes to school. |
The Client is my favourite, Runaway Jury is next, then Pelican Brief and the Brethren follow. |
HEY FELLOW MEDICAL STUDENTS, WHAT'S UP? HERE'S SO SILENT. LET'S REVIVE THIS THREAD |
COMEDY OF ERRORS!!! That's my all-time favourite. I really enjoyed reading Taming of the Shrew and Much Ado about Nothing. I love all the shakespeare books i've read tho. |
Frank Peretti LEFT BEHIND series Perry Mason series Lawrence Sanders John Grisham Robert Ludlum Virginia C. Andrews Danielle Steele Dean Koontz Jeffrey Archer David Baldacci Sidney Sheldon Patricia Cornwall , it's a long, long list! i read lots of nigerian/African books in my early teens. can't remember most of the authors but i know i really enjoyed reading them. some of those that stand out are: Dizzy Angel Cry Beloved Country Forest of a Thousand Demons Evbu my Love |
Foreign TV offers far better quality than Nigerian TV. However, i would rather go for Nigerian TV because our local TV programs generally have positive messages for viewers. |
macalurs i feel u. i know pastors' kids who went the wrong way because they were angry with their parents. i was fortunate that my father didnt become a pastor till i was 8, and that even then he always supported me and my siblings. we were very free when we were growing up and we could question anything. my parents didnt force God on their children. several times church members would report me to my parents but they always supported me in public. |
it's really terrible. why should a homosexual want to be called a servant of a God who hates homosexuality? i believe God allows them to rebel against Him publicly for long so that on the Judgment Day, they it would be clear to everyone world that He is just. |
dont let it get to you when ppl say derogatory things about Jesus because He's still God no matter what anyone says or does. besides, it's not worth it arguing with, or even replying, Mizieya. |
it makes sense, really. if non-muslims have to behave like muslims in muslim countries, then muslims should also behave like citizens of their host countries. muslims are free to practice their religion in many western countries, but christians cant even carry bibles in public in muslim countries. |
I like several pastors on that list - Oyedepo, Uma Ukpai etc. but Pastor Adeboye is my favourite pastor. However, i dont think he is the best, God's calling isnt a competition. They are all servants of God and would be judged independently. Neither of them would be used as a standard when God is going to judge anyone. It is only God who can say who has more anointing or who is more faithful. |
Simple Truth by David Baldacci |
firdaus4us, did u read the whole book? Of course the bible is both human and divine. Human because it was written by human beings, but divine because it was inspired by God. The bible itself says that much and christians agree. It's like someone telling another person to write him a letter. What interests us isn't so much the style as the Spirit behind the letters. Plus, we have the Holy Spirit who helps us know the Will of God. Concerning editing over the years, there is proof that the bible hasn't been changed. Whatever editions are minor, plus, there is no fundamental christian doctrine that rests on a disputed verse of the bible. |
No, the message of Jesus doesn't lead anyone to kill. It is the perversion of His message that does that. He teaches love for enemies, forgiveness. He loved and cared for His disciples. It is to be expected that even though Christians see Him as the Perfect Leader, many non-christians would see Him as something else. But then, I can imagine that the name "Jesus" conjures different images in our minds. |
engr17, i'm not sure i understand ur post. if u're saying that women first encountered pain but men now go thru more pain, God didn't say anything about distinguishing btw male and female pain so u can't compare that to wearing trousers. babayoisi, i don't think we should wear trousers because some women in d States do. What i mean is that, my church says we shouldn't wear because it is a sin yet they invite women from the States, who wear trousers, to preach. That's double standards. makes me feel they cooked up the law. I wear trousers because i don't believe God said we shouldn't wear. I believe He wants a distincition between men and women. |
many ppl start going to church when they have problems. men don't like announcing their problems. men would rather search inwards first, then go to friends b4 going to strangers (d church) for help. women usually go to where they think they can get help immediately. then they drag their husbands along. |
I feel you, Orikinla. If the Church in Nigeria were to be faithful to God, this country would be great. Righteousness exalts a nation, but even the Nigerian church is corrupt. Churches are more concerned about taking over, as if Christianity is a competition. Different churches should help and love one another and not see themselves as rivals. If the church spent the resources to disciple members, Nigeria would be a greater nation. Personally, I believe that the church has failed or is failing Nigeria. Pastors would rather cart away large sums of money from Nigeria to open branches all over Europe and America, when the North of Nigeria is largely unchurched. Why can't they use that money to build free schools and hospitals in the North? I believe that ppl in the South would be encouraged to give more if the church can transparently use the money to develop the North, at the same time furthering God's work there. Jesus' commission was to reach "Jerusalem, Samaria, all Judea and everywhere". But Nigerians want to reach everywhere first. The mission field in this country is vast enough, why do they keep sending missionaries abroad? |
I met a girl in a lesson I attended years ago. We became friends almost immediately and towards the end of the lesson she mentioned during a discussion that she was a muslim. Apparently, she knew I took it for granted that she was a christian. When she saw I was surprised she told me that she knows she doesn't look like a muslim and that she hears that a lot. She looked pleased that she didn't "look like a muslim". When I stopped attending the lesson, I lost contact with her but have always regretted why I never asked her what a muslim looks like. I've asked that question once myself. I was quite young then and meant it as a compliment. Fortunately the girl I was talking to didn't mind. Rather, she was pleased. She was attending a christian school then so she might have been used to such comments. I think ppl are used to seeing muslims looking drab, wearing grey or green clothes etc. Not loving fun, looking submissive and sober, always saying things like "insha Allah" and all those things muslims say. Nowadays, we have a lot of muslims who dress and behave like the rest of d pop'n. |
d bible doesn't support the notion that the voice of the people is the voice of God. Anyone who prays to God for help must be ready to receive instructions from Him. When Nigerians are ready to obey God's instructions prayer alone would heal this country. |
Of course the Rapture would happen at the same time worldwide. The issue then wouldn't be what time it is in Lagos or London, but who made the Rapture and who didn't. Jesus never said anything to infer that the whole world must be in the same time zone when the Rapture would occur. In fact, He says 2 would be in bed, , and 2 would be in the field. This means that the bible acknowledges that ppl in different places would be at different time zones. |
Sewad, The Issue here is determining that God said so. The bible tells us to test the spirits. We can't just accept prophecies because they sound authentic. btw, when did they link plane crashes to the fasting? was it before or after the crashes? i'm not sure though i think it was after. in that case, ppl would argue that at the time of ordering the fasts, they should have mentioned the plane crashes. when i first heard this prophecy about the 49 plane crashes, the first thing that came to my mind was why we had 2 - or 3 - crashes. Did God accept some days and reject others? Personally, I think it would be better if pastors can stick to bringing in Jesus' lost sheep. Jesus didn't commission anyone to be a prophet or fortune teller (which is what this annual prophecies are beginning to look like). |
Israel was up against a terrorist organization using civillians as shields, they had to be careful to keep the casualties low. Considering that Israel didn't disarm Hezbollah, they didn't win. Hezbollah isn't a normal group, they don't mind that they brought distruction and death upon their country so they can say they won. Afterall, they're terrorists. The only loser in this war is Lebanon. I hope after this, the govt. would take control though I don't thnk they're strong or willing enough to handle Hezbollah. Even if Hezbollah is disarmed, another terrorist group would arise again. Hezbollah and all the other Arab terrorists are united by their hatred of Israel. Deterrence can work only with governments, but not with terrorists. I watched one Hezbollah guy say on CNN at the beginning of the war that they would win because they love death but Isrealis love life. Those aren't normal humans. They want to die. They hate Isreal enough to commit suicide or kill their kids just to take the life of one Isreali. I read somewhere about Israelis singing this song during a funeral: "It's not a dream, the day shall come. The day for which we've waited 2,000 years has arrived. The last war. We will go back home. We will go back to our friends. We will take off our olive-colored uniforms and wait for other days to come." It was then I realized that they are going to have to put up with more of these hatred and animosity from Arabs, and the rest of the world. I don't know much about the Biblical Prophecies concerning Israel, but from what I know, Israel won't have real peace till Jesus comes to judge the earth. In times like this, I wish He would come soon to deliver His people. If only they would accept Him, |
To answer the original question, I don't think muslims are bad. I'm not a muslim, but have muslim friends. They're ok. The problem is with the muslim fanatics, the extremists. We've got a lot of christian extremists, but they get the worst opposition from other christians. The way other christians handle these extremists makes them seem less harmful. There have been cases where well-respected Preachers make bad public statements, you see christians from all corners rebuking them till they have to accept they've made mistakes. If muslims can really show such hatred to extremism (and not just say they hate it), the general perception of muslims being extremists would change. Plus, even though many muslims try to make these evildoers look like they're not obeying the Koran, these guys have somehow incorporated their evil message into Islam. They have the loudest voice concerning Islam. They are the ones who are telling the whole world what Islam is all about. They are teaching this hatred for christians and Jews to muslim kids. U see young muslims in Western countries supporting terrorists. they rationalize terrorism and oppression in Islamic countries. the good muslims really need to do something to stop this evil seed from growing. |
See how people can protest on the streets against the governments in the West, that is impossible in Islamic nations. Govts. in Islamic nations are very oppressive. Even though muslims tend to hate the US, many of them would give anything to go and live there. I know several such people in Nigeria. Arabs and muslims can go to West and become citizens. People from very different cultures, with very different worldviews, yet they are accepted in the West. They are given full rights as citizens, rights they would never have had in their own countries. The leaders in Islamic societies enjoy a lot of Western luxuries, while encouraging their followers to hate the West. The followers hate, and envy, the West while longing for the luxuries there. Sharia is a terrible thing. It doesn't really enforce high moral standards. it only brings about hypocrites. There are high rates of homosexuality and promiscuity in the North of Nigeria with all the sharia. Yet they all come out and pretend to be good muslims encouraging sharia. Even the muslims that support sharia run to christian organizations when they become victims of sharia. I wonder how ppl can afford to live under such oppression. |
There's no way anyone can make Hezbollah look legitimate. Israel's problem with Hezbollah, and the Arabs, is not just about border issues. The hatred of Jews is deep-rooted in Arabs. They want to see Israel destroyed, they don't want to settle issues with them. They don't want peace. To them, the only solution to all this crisis is to destroy Israel. It is funny that the international community keeps saying Israel is punishing Lebanon for a crime committed by terrorists. The Lebanese government has said more than once that Hezbollah is part of them - the govt. The Lebanese army fights with Hezbollah, with supplies gotten from Hezbollah. |
Toshmann, i've also been wondering where the Lebanese men are. they keep talking of women and children, where are the husbands and fathers? could they be fighting with Hezbollah? |
There's nothing wrong with a believer working in a brewery as long as he doesn't get drunk. Drunkeness is the sin. |
Jesus came to call sinners to repentance, the Church must help sinners repent and not condemn them. If a member gets pregnant b4 marriage, the church should punish/suspend the couple and wed them before the child comes. The important thing is to get them to repent and still feel accepted. If God doesn't reject them, the Church has no right to do so. plus, they should be allowed to dress in whatever colours they choose. |
Koffi Annan is the only UN Secretary General I've known so I can't compare him to the others, but I wouldn't rate him high at all. I don't think he has performed well. He doesn't seem to be able to do much if the US doesnt agree. It's almost like he reports to the US and the other big countries. That makes him seem incompetent. |
i don't want iran and syria to get involved so the casualty rate wont get higher. i'm not bothered by Ahmadinejad's threats about annihilating Israel though. I believe Israel would still be here at the end of this world. The Bible is very clear about God's plans for Israel. Israel can't be annihilated. If Iran uses nuclear weapons, Israel would probably do the same and the consequences would be devastating. Hezbollah/Lebanon might as well hand over 2 soldiers and save hundreds of women and kids from further bombings and displacement. |
