Kukah, Arewa youths slam Northern leaders

On December 7, 2011 · In News
,

KADUNA-Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Hasan Matthew Kukah and the Arewa Youths Forum, AYF yesterday lampooned Northern leaders over their roles in the under development of the area, saying the leaders were hypocritical with claims of following the footprints of the late Premier of the North, Sir Ahmadu Ballo; just as the former Petroleum Minister called for the proscription of the Christian Association of Nigerian, CAN, warning that failure to do so would force Muslims to come under one umbrella as, Muslim Association of Nigeria, MAN with the attendant consequences.

They spoke at the Northern Peace Conference in Kaduna.

Aminu warned that should Muslims have the same kind of arrangement, it may create a front for constant conflicts.

Bishop Kukah and AYF also pooh-poohed the peace parley in Kaduna by the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF and some Northern Elders pointing out that it was not only a waste of time and resources but a jamboree.

He accused religious leaders of conniving with politicians to perpetuate injustice on the people through sectionalising their religious faith.

Also, the Governor of Plateau State Jonah Jang, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Pam Pyojock said that, the problem in the north was that some northerners had imported mercenaries from Chad and Niger Republics to engage the Middle Belt area in a war over the contest of land and expansion of religion.

“With the desert fast spreading southward, the demand for land is putting pressure on the frontline states of Plateau and parts of the Middle Belt.

“Mercenaries are being imported from Niger and Chad, because of the porous nature of our borders. This is evident from the fact that any time some extremists were caught in violence on the plateau, some of them turn out to come from these countries. In fact, they end up as a nuisance by those who brought them, because they no longer take orders from them. The issue of desertification is therefore a very serious problem. How we preach and propagate our religion is also another problem”, he said. At the peace conference yesterday, Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna state, called for the creation of state police as a means of ensuring peace in the North which had been torn apart by unrest that had led to the death of over 2000 innocent people in the last two years.

Bishop Kukah spoke on “Roots of ethno-religious crises in Northern Nigeria,” asking Northern leaders to stop praising the late Ahmadu Bello and other past leaders and pursue programmes that would develop and transform the living conditions of their people.

“Today, 99 per cent of our discussions are on Sardauna and about Sardauna; but we are being hypocritical. We are seriously looking at almajirai (beggars) in the North, while the Southern states are far developing their educational system to the extent that, the number in one of their states is more than all the ones in one of our zones.

“We need to have a system that ensures that people play by the rules. People obey the law and not breach the laws and people’s rights also not violated.

“For me, if Christians in Kebbi, Zamfara are complaining, let Muslims, too, in other places complain so that we begin to have good ways of overcoming these challenges.

“We need a society that is struggling to ensure equality.”

However, a statement signed by the Chairman of the AYF, Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu and distributed at the venue of the peace conference yesterday, read: “From what we have seen and followed, there is nothing new that guarantees significant future, for the downtrodden Northern masses, be they Muslims or Christians, Hausa, Fulani, Bajju, Berom, Angas, Igala or Egbira in this conference.

“It is based on the foregoing that we make the following observations:

“The Peace Conference is nothing but waste of time and a jamboree and talk show, and also another unique opportunity for elite re-union aimed at renewing political lineages.

“Nothing more than that. There is nothing new and convincing that heralds a new dawn in the North. What is there that we have never heard? What did the main actors say that they have not been saying in the past decades?

“How many Peace Conferences did Sir Ahmadu Bello organise to bring about unity and development in the North?

“Even the South that is ahead of the North today; how many such gatherings have they organised to have a lead ahead of the North?

“In short the so called conference was purely politically motivated and not a genuine commitment as demonstrated there.

“It has nothing to do with the masses but just dancing with their lyrics but not the rhyme, as contained in the hymn book.

“What impact does the August meeting have on the lives of aggrieved Northerners in Maiduguri, Kano, Bauchi, Damaturu, or Southern Kaduna? What impact does it have on the Almajiri children in the streets?

“ACF should note that peace is priceless, and not cosmetic; rather it can only be achieved with sincere and honest leadership which we cannot vouch for in the North now.

“Our sympathy rather goes to few sincere individuals who actively engaged in the talk show but the reality is that the issue of forgiveness and reconciliation go beyond rhetoric or at a tea or coffee party. In fact the debate arising from one of the technical sessions confirmed our argument, for we witnessed how insincerity and sentiment dominated and beclouded the issue of the supposed Road Map to peace. As far as we are concerned, it is a jamboree and waste of public funds that would have been channelled to the ailing but crucial sectors in the North.

“We are conscious of how the New Nigerian Newspapers, Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, along with other legacies of the late Sir Ahmadu Bello are in ruins today, except that the leaders are beautifying them with lies and insincerity.

“Till this very moment, Christians and Muslims in the North are still killing one another, because of religious manipulation of same elite. What have they done by directly concentrating their efforts in recociling feuding communities, and appealing to them to sheath the swords, they, the elite supplied them through preaching hatred, acrimony and false religiosity?” the AYF’s statement further stated.

In his speech, Governor Yakowa said: “In other to address issues of violence in the country, the various security agencies must take their work seriously; whether you are talking about the police or the State Security Services, SSS, or other para-military organizations that engage in the work of security, they must take their work seriously.

“Throughout this country, we have only one police force. Because of the size of this country and the size of our police force, it poses a great challenge and I can talk from experience. I have severally referred to the unfortunate post election violence that erupted here in Kaduna state in April this year as most unfortunate and most unnecessary, because it was purely political…

“When the situation becomes unmanageable, you run to the police. When violence erupts in one area, you have to get in touch with the Commissioner of Police, who will in turn get in touch with the Inspector General of Police who will then start arranging for additional police support from other state formations.

’’Before that happens, only God knows the magnitude of damage that would have been done. So I suggest that we have state police in place.

“Of course, the governor takes the blame because he will be accused of not responding on time to the situation. Unfortunately, people don’t know that the governor is not in charge because he has to go through a channel.

“It is the same thing with the Army. I remember when it happened; I got in touch with the GOC who in turn had to get in touch with the Chief of Army Staff. At first, we were told that we were going to get reinforcement from Kaduna and then, it was Jos and before that could be done, a lot of things have gone wrong”.

Yakowa lamented that more often than not, people arrested for violent activities were released without trial, pointing out that this had not helped in addressing cases of violence in the country. According to him, ‘’the police should make sure that those behind communal violence are arrested, investigated or interrogated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“Anybody involved in communal violence must be made to face the wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.

“Sometimes, when people are arrested; between the police and the Judiciary, you don’t know what happens and they are released. Therein lies the challenge we face in this type of situation, not realizing the amount of money that these communal crisis has been causing us in the north”.

But former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in his contribution, said that the current Northern leaders were out of tune with modernity, saying they should give the young ones the opportunity to develop their potentials,

According to Ribadu, “We need to ponder over the ability of society and the community to do the right thing for the generations coming up is very important.

“We keep talking about Sardauna, Tafawa Balewa and the rest of them. They did good jobs and showed the way to our present leaders/fathers, leaving them with the responsibility of carrying on with the good work. Some of you did the job very well.

“We believe that it is also our challenge today to continue with what you have started. Today, it is a modern world and a different world. It is not the world of the 1950s, 19602, 1970s or the 19802.

“Things have changed and we must take note of that. Let us understand that this north we are talking about today is a different one. We have new challenges that require new approaches and solutions.’’

AS the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) opened a two-day conference on peace and unity for the development in northern Nigeria on Monday, past rulers of the country of northern extraction, General Ibrahim Babangida; Major-General Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Shehu Shagari were absent from the event.

The conference, which was held at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Conference Hall at Murtala Square, Kaduna, however, witnessed the attendance of notable northerners like former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, who was the chairman on the occasion.

Other distinguished personalities present included former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad; the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammad Bashar and the Shehu of Borno.

Also in attendance were former military governors and administrators, like Colonel Habibu Shuaibu (retd); Colonel Farouk Ahmed (retd) and Brigadier Abba Kyari (retd).

Top politicians like Umaru Shinkafi; Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as well as elder statesmen Tanko Yakasai; Bamanga Tukur; Magaji Danbatta and the Wakilin Adamawa, Hassan Adamu, graced the occasion.

Declaring the conference open, President Goodluck Jonathan, who was represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, commended the ACF for making tremendous effort at bringing peace and harmony among the diverse peoples of the North.

According to President Jonathan, the conference was crucial and important, considering the challenges confronting the region.

He said the present administration had evolved policies with a view to transforming the northern economy rapidly, pointing out that the Federal Government was committed to addressing the problems of power supply, rail transportation, education, as well as agriculture.

According to him, the Federal Government had awarded a contract for the construction of a 250-megawatt power generating plant at Kudenden, in Kaduna State, and another 700-megawatt power plant at Zungeru, Niger State.

In his opening remark, the chairman of the conference, General Gowon, lamented the insecurity, interstate conflicts and social unrest bedevilling the northern region.

General Gowon said that the challenges before the conference were enormous, saying, “we must be ready to talk and tell ourselves the bitter truth.”

He charged the conference to address some of the problems hampering the development of the region like poverty, unemployment, ethno-religious crises, murder and bomb blasts.

Earlier, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the ACF, Lieutenant-General J.T. Useni, in his welcome address, said the conference was summoned because the north was lagging behind and confronted with multifarious problems which must be tackled if the north should move forward.

All governors from the north were in attendance, except the Plateau State governor, Mr Jonah Jang; the Kogi State governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris and the Kwara State governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed.

You guys can denial it that you hate not just the Igbos you also hate the so called Muslim infidels(yoruba)&ND. We don't need to urge about it.

when i mean north i mean the sharia states(excluding the christian communities)

As for my brother from jos,the igbos don't hate you.be rest assured that the igbos are your best friends we don't hate you rather its painful to see that it was your brothers that was used by the jihadist to massacre the igbos.the igbo did not attack Nigeria.they only declared their own nation and your brothers invaded our land.am sure many igbos have forgiven you and maybe some have not but am very sure majority of the igbos don't have any problem with the good people of middle belt.In fact you guy are the best tribe in this country, just that you guys where blinded and you could not see who your real enemy was at the formative years of Nigeria and you allied with your enemy to commit genocide on the peace loving igbos.after all Gowon have come to apologies to the igbos.I can assure you, when ever you need us to help you fight your enemy, you can count on us.

I don't hate any tribe rather i dislike what Usman dan fodio let behind as his younger Generation.they say a bad tree will always bear bad fruit and that is what we are seeing today. The haramist and almarjiris.bleep all of you.weather you like it or not, your region will never progress.insecurity, poor infrastructure, illiteracy, poverty, extremist and nepotism that is what you guys are all born with and so it shall be with you all.unless you seek forgiveness form Almighty God cos the blood of all the innocent children and woman that you guys murdered shall hunt you.Idiots
I now deem you fit as a hater!!!!You are the idiot rather.Since God judges us individually you will be ashamed that day that alot of us go clean on your claims.Thank God for that.Probably he so saw haters like you who will like to punish people by race or ethnicity.I just don't like to bring this issues up about the war and tribal talk.Do you think they allied with other tribes because they were blind or obviously saw what your arrogant kind did to there brothers in the army. You see what people don't understand is people could be really good friends today and enemies tomorrow. No condition is permanent.Without the North, MD won't have gone to war with the Igbos to avenge there losses.Simple they asked for revenge like all that suffered loses in the hands of the coup plotters. They may have gone to extremes, yes! but they were very much not misguide but driven by the anger of your coup plotters attack. When people say Gowon was manipulated i laugh.Simple, just take stock of the army then and see who made the bulk of the army that co-ordinated the counter coup and subsequent war,MD army folks make the numbers.TY Danjuma another MD man.Its easy to lie to suit your needs but it would be wise to say the truth because her values are eternal.
Look deep you will find that Ojukwu was born in the North, his father did business in the North. Why is that? When the going was warm and cordial we were once friends. After the event the mood changed. There are some in the MD that have had issues with some Hausa communities in there locality that has escalated into the thinking that it is a hidden agenda. Before now the same MD had fought within themselves and seen others opposing minority tribe as enemies.Eg Tiv/Doma, TIV/Jukun, Ibira/Bassa conflicts etc.You will know then that the greatest enemy was the opposing side as the fight lingered.Remind where the Hausa were as of then?Mind there business.Today a discord has being planted to cause various disharmony amongst the multiple tribes of the North, using religion and alot of people have fallen to it.
Today you suggest assisting them in a war against another and tomorrow it could be against you. From your history you should have known that wars are dirty and when you start the fire you may hardly control where it ends. What you do today would definitely define tomorrow and account for so many.Good and bad.Once again it is okay to ally and see the destruction of another by your stand, the more reason i am vindicated that your post was meant to instigate and drive a wedge of hate yet again against a region. You have fallen low my friend. From sultan to Middle belt and far north! You hate sees no bounds. When it happens (God forbid),then maybe a first class experience would discourage you.Every person would stand to defend her own and its simple. You may define the start but no one knows just how it would end.Same way Ojukwu felt support would come from some quarters, yet the failed him and where he thought it would all go away it didn't.We must learn from the past.
If you must Know i have said this and am not ashamed to say it.For any one who kills an innocent Igbo man/woman up north does that without my consent and i despise that person.I also believe where such has happen just becomes the right of the aggrieved.I have in my little way spoken against it and advocated more responsibility of leaders to the security of all.But should in case any one decides that while trying to seek just, that my innocence is worth attacking, then yes we are at war and am willing

Obviously you still maintain an ideology of hate and to prove a point that Northerners as a whole enjoy the death of Ojukwu. While you want to draw Sultan into it.Can you assure me that all other traditional rulers in the Southern and xtian kingdoms have all sent there condolence.Remind how many condolence Ojukwu (while alive) has sent northwards to late traditional rulers or any late Sultan? If you consider the religious side of it has CAN done so or is it your blind hate that rides you like crazy.
Until now Northerners are still sending there condolences yet you say they pretend.Abeg you crazy fools can you just leave us alone. You guys just keep Judging us falsely and expect to be right. At this point i will ask you keep your sick mind to yourself.
I see where you are going with this. You are full of hate and just want to create the impression that Ojukwu and the Igbos are hated by all northerners and Muslims. If not i don't see your point. You were told that your friend maybe right or wrong. That your friend could be saying the truth but only valid to his immediate domain where he resides.why can't you as a human being pull your brain matter together and reason as one.To prove your point you are now asking why the sultan is yet to say anything.Jumping to a deceitful position and concluding that it could be for the reason he is a non-Muslim.What is wrong with you dude.Na by force say we must meet your profile. Why are you trying so hard?Is it the hate you have for Us?

I won’t quit politics until,  –Buhari •Begins consultation on 2015
Written by Hassan Ibahim, Kaduna Monday, 28 November 2011

A former military head of state and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the last general election, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has resinded his decision to contest for the position of the president of the country, saying that he won’t quit until sustainable democracy is entrenched.

Buhari declared that he would not quit active politics, while he charged his supporters to gird their loins for the 2015 general election.

He had announced he would be giving up presidential race after the April 2011 election at the final rally of his party in Abuja, a few days before the poll.

But his U-turn came to the fore in an address he delivered during an empowerment programme orga-nised by one of the representatives of the party in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Honourable Muha-mmed Ali, in Kaduna.

“I won’t quit politics until good governance and sustainable democracy is entrenched in this country,” he said.

He added that “we should not be illusioned that demoracy dividends will ever come to us easily without making sacrifices and the time for proper change is 2015,” Buhari said.

The Katsina-born politician disclosed that he honoured the invitation of Honourable Ali, as part of his consultations with stakeholders on “the Nigeria Project,” while he promised to hold a world press conference on his future political plans as soon as the Supreme Court dispensed with the case before it, where he was challenging the declaration of President Goodluck Jonathan as the winner of the last presidential election.

He enjoined his supporters to shun acts of violence and brigandage, while calling on them to always get registered by the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) so as to vote and guard their votes during polls.

The chairman on the occasion, Captain Moha-mmed Joji (retd), tasked the 13 CPC lawmakers in the Kaduna State assembly to emulate Honourable Ali’s empowerment and skills acquisition programmes for about 550 people.

Obi urges patience on funeral plans

FORMER military President Ibrahim Babangida knows how to make the late Biafran leader, Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, happy in death: ensuring that the Igbo produce President.

Gen. Babangida yesterday joined a long row of prominent Nigerians eulogising the late Ojukwu, a fellow soldier, who died in London on Saturday. He described the late Biafran leader as a “wordsmith”, a “great orator” and a “courageous” Nigerian.

Gen. Babangida, in a tribute he paid through his spokesman, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said of the late Ojukwu: “He was a man who felt the Igbo nation deserves more than it is getting and did give me his word that he was going to support me on the assurance that I would take a Nigerian of Igbo extraction as my running mate in the presidential contest.

“I was going to do that before the aspiration petered out. Despite that, I still believe in the presidential aspiration of the Igbo in future elections and one thing that would gladden the mind of Dim, even in death, is to see an Igbo man becoming President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in the spirit of unity and stability.”

He urged the Federal Government to immortalise Ojukwu by naming a monument after him.

Gen. Babangida added: “The Federal Government should immortalise this great Nigerian by naming a great institution or monument after him. That way, his name and history will forever be preserved for the good of humanity.”

The ex-Head of State also recalled how he related with the late Ojukwu and the kind of leader he was.

The statement said: “At last, a great Nigerian, an extra-ordinary Nigerian, a wordsmith and great orator, a cerebral soldier and very courageous Nigerian, Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, has just snapped.

“He was a Nigerian who was driven by his convictions and pursued his goal in life, believing in his convictions. He was a rare gem, a strong advocate for better society and strong believer in the equitable distribution of power and political bargaining.

“With Dim, my very senior colleague, there was no dull moment. I got really close to him during my regime and I remember vividly how we used to sit and discuss issues of nation-building and unity of our country after the civil war era.

“Even at old age, Dim still believed in the cause he fought for. He shared his sentiments about the country barely a year ago when I paid him a visit at his country home to inform him of my intention to run for the last 2011 presidential election. He was his vintage self, taking me down memory lane about the Nigerian situation.

“He could remember vividly also the role that my administration played in returning his seized property to him as well as those of several others as part of our modest contribution to healing the wounds of the civil war.

“He was his characteristic self, deploying anecdotes and wise sayings to underscore the import of our discourse.

“Dim Ojukwu’s patriotism about the oneness of the country was not in doubt. He believed that given the country’s diverse socio-political and cultural configurations, the nation-states within the nation must be given room to flourish in a mutually exclusive arrangement that would further the aspiration of the country.

“His understanding of the political dynamics in the country was extra-ordinary and, trust him, his rendition was usually in a class of his own.

“The nation will miss this solid voice from the East of the Niger, this leader of men who stood firmly by his people all through his journey in life. Dim was never given to prevarication nor was he the type that would genuflect on issues.

“It was easy for one to know where he truly belonged, and he would give convincing reasons why he would take such a position. Such a man should be immortalised and his history and entire humanity should be preserved for the present and future generations of Nigerians.

“My heart goes to his family, especially Bianca, his wife of many years, at this moment of grief and mourning of a departed dear husband, father, uncle and highly cerebral Nigerian. My condolences to the entire Igbo sons and daughters and Nigerians all over the world for the loss of a distinguished Nigerian who lived by his convictions till death separated us. May the spirit of the Almighty God grant him eternal rest in the hereafter. May He also provide the family the strength and fortitude to bear with this great loss.”

A former President of the Senate, Senator Adolphus Wabara, described the death of Ojukwu as a huge loss to the nation.

Wabara, in a condolence message to the Odumegwu-Ojukwu family, said the Igbo and indeed Nigerians at large are proud of the late Ojukwu’s contributions to Nigerian nationhood.

Wabara described the late Ojukwu as a “tower of pride to generations unborn”.

He added: “We take solace in the fact that his legacies will abide by Nigeria forever. No one, not even his ardent critics, will overlook his monumental contributions to Nigerian nationhood, his love for the downtrodden and his passion for the development of his people.

“I urge the family he left behind and the entire Igbo community to take heart and continue to bask in the glory of his indelible and glorious legacies.”

Former Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari described the late Ojukwu as a tireless, focused and frank negotiator who kept to his words.

Buhari, in a condolence message by his spokesman Yinka Odumakin, said Ojukwu and himself were partners in progress, searching assiduously for solutions to the problems confronting Nigeria.

“In the process of our friendship and quests in each other’ houses and in all our transitions and engagements on and off the political scene, I find Dim a most forthright and honourable players,” the former Presidential candidate said.

About Jailing him remind me when?how many times Ojukwu as a person has raised it as an issue any issue towards Buhari. While Buhari was in ANPP,he had a good relationship with Ojukwu while trying to build an opposition along side Okadigbo. While you are here ranting trash.Do you know what transpired between them? Please allow the family answer such and don't poke nose in the affairs that is for the family.Remember that Buhari and Ojukwu planned a protest in Abuja after voting irregularities with the Obasanjo government and they were denied permission for any rally then.

Frankly if the Nigerian army were to identify and deal with a treat completely not where 99% percent is supposedly innocent and neutral.Just 0.5 percent is rebellious and fighting within the midst of the 99percent.Which makes it difficult,You will be shocked at the devastating carnage they would deliver.
Liberia and sierra-leone know better when they met the Nigerian armed forces. In the case of freetown don't forget they crushed an army under John coroma with easy.More armed and far organized than the MEND or BH. Today if the MEND or BH guys were to confront them openly and hold an area as there territory with weapons free orders to the Military, guys na Odi go happen instantly.Boys go enter water drown than confront a ruthless drunk/high advancing Nigerian Army.
Militants and BH boys use human shield which makes it a difficult task. That makes a militant with a dane gun lethal to the security.Because the army would have to define friendly or foe, increasing the risk of being attacked before choosing what and how to respond.
Lets say BH or MEND choose a state and say this is my area and pose a security treat, even with the weapons displayed and more they will know where they 4UQ up!!!
Its is also true that the army may witness mutiny/anarchy where an attack seems obviously bias towards a particular region(S).So the COAS and co know that better and it is always part of strategy. So why would you fight with an army that is disgruntled or a quest where you lack support from various quarters. They army will only venture where they are sure there response is understood and widely welcome.Today even military distribution is done to make such orders work fine.Placing southern personnel in the North and Northern personnel in the south. That ensures a repeat of the Ojukwu saga is not simply done.
What most people state here about the army falling apart is actually not easy.Because there bond is far stronger than the average civilian mentality. An Igbo military man could sermon help from a Hausa man in the army where he is in danger and get it against who ever regardless. Its almost and instinct that a fellow military man will respond to a compatriot in harm without minding the opponent.hence our so called unity today. They are far more united than us period.A hausa man will shoot a fellow hausa man without asking because COAS said so.

Well,4UQ you tooo!!!!! angry angry angry angry

@beaf am really not expecting such myopic response from you. What national assembly or political manipulation do they need? Are you being sarcastic or just hating the north as you always do?What is with you and the bad lies.Sharia talks about general knowledge regardless of the source so long as it does not make you do things against ones belief. As far as Islam is concerned alot of the knowledge available in our schools meet sharia standard. So what sharia are you talking about. The system of educating is the question here! Its not viable and should be changed.
They don't need to even change anything.Just close all Almajiri centres and refer students to regular schools. The Almajiri Islamic teaches can be updated to meet the current trends.Even the mullahs of Iran browse the internet and have pages to respond to followers why not them?if they choose to be part of the system.Afterwards apply as teachers if there passion is teaching.Mr beaf you are totally misguide and veiled in your blind hate. That you don't reason or see beyond your nose anytime north is mentioned.
Most northern schools allow Islamic dress codes and worship. They teach relevant topics to humanity and allow you choose the way to study. So how does it disturb the sharia way of study.

The Almajiri was suppose to train students in the past. Not sophisticated but useful in the old, since they were thought to read and write and could send information or store that in well written languages.
Now it is Simple, the world has moved on and they need to look at it and rethink just how it works.Today we already have IRK and CRK in regular school. We have them all the way to the University. So simply abolish the Almajiri system and tell the students to enroll in the regular schools.
Governors should just tell the parents look,we have the religious studies there.if you want your ward to study it professionally he should simply choose it with your guidance as a career path. You have boarding and day schools so!
Sharia does not insist on the almajiri system.Acquiring knowledge and Teaching the knowledge is that Sharia recommendeds.Knowledge as suggested is both for this life and the hereafter. That means knowledge of the world and the religious aspect of it.Thought priority is attached to religious first,it doesn't stop there.Today Muslims, have both knowledge in Nigeria and are okay.
Alot of educated Muslims you see today have the Islamic and secular knowledge. Not just one without the other.Today parents allow students go to secular school afterwards send them to organized Islamic classes to study Islamic theology.Islamic centers and teachers are all over like extra-moral classes. That even the working group en-roll to catch up where they didn't in the Islamic aspect.Software(S) and alot of others means exist that you could study hard and move on.From the software "Alim" as a Muslim i have memorized 14 chapters of the Quran in English and arabic.I have asked Islamic scholars and they found no difference or flaws in it.
What should be done is in the states.Sokoto has started and alot of Northern states are doing there best even before now. They just need to enforce a ban and improve the educational method eg IRK studied in school to meet the Islamic standard.Schools must be made mandatory and parents informed about knowledge and how to get it.Then fees must be subsidized to assist the poor who send there wards to the Almajiri system becauses its free and would save them the responsibilities of training there wards.
Beaf you simply have spew crap and just choose to pick a quarrel with the SW and ACN guys.

Crisis looms in Osun over hijab

There seems to be a pending crisis over the resolve of the Muslim community in Osun State  to enforce the use of hijab in public schools.

The Muslims are insisting that it is their right to use the hijab, because it is for the edification of Muslim girls, but the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has vowed to resist the move.

Addressing  newsmen in Osogbo,  the president-general of Osun State Muslim  Community, Sheikh Salaudeen Olayiwola, said  that  section 38 of  the 1999 Constitution provided for freedom of religion, just as  he insisted that it was the right of Muslim ladies to use hijab.

“Indeed, the hijab, niqab or burqa being part and parcel of Islamic mode of dressing  and by whatever standard a dignified and vividly decent one, cannot be taken away by any other law other than the constitution,”he noted.

Sheikh Olayiwola said that they were not fighting the Christian community because they had a meeting point, the Nigeria Inter Religion Committee (NIREC), where issues that affect the two bodies are discussed.

Reacting to the plan  to enforce the use of hijab in public schools in a telephone chat, the state chairman of CAN, Superior Evangelist Abraham Aladeseye, said the Muslims were only looking for an avenue to foment trouble adding that they would not be allowed to carry out their intention.

He said their action contravened  government’s directive , which banned the use of hijab in non Muslim schools.
The Nigerian media and turning of issues to show there bias nature. The issue of the hijab is not enforcing the hijab as if mandatory on all students but you will be surprise to know that is the other way round in Osun.In schools there in Osun,Muslim girls are fustrated over hijab. That girls can not wear them to school. While in some cases students are asked to turn back and go home over the use of the hijab.
In one instance it happened again and the Muslim community became more agitated and asked why should such be permitted even where they make the bulk of the population.
So the Muslim community resolved to insist they had a right to use the hijab in the educational institutes of the state. They are asking for there right to wear the Hijab in schools and not be victimize over wearing it.Already the media has gone singing a different tone as if they want to enforce it on all people regardless of faith.Even the Muslims is not a must under there request but simply where a lady or girl chooses to wear it, she should be allowed to and not made to suffer for it. undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided

Good move GEJ.Thought you need to do more when you get back.Right move!!!!.GEJ why not call in china,I mean as an alternative. The west will come naturally.Because of beefing. Its easier to bring the Chinese and also its more advantageous.Considering they respect local laws and are open to such regulations. Not a case where you are given conditions to be met before they come under maybe like in the case of USA and UK.
China is doing well now and even the west is trying to get help from them.Things have changed. We have alot in common with china and they could simply add the edge to move us further into the next level. They have a huge population and have managed it well.Industries in china are closed and more are discouraged because of there crazy growth. With good regulation we could woo those Chinese investors and all that. They are good in Agriculture, cheap energy and industrialization. We need cheap and fast power to come in now.We didn't start or have the largest green house emission and it won't hurt to try ours until we are rich enough to go clean energy.
They don't meddle in local affairs and always supportive of the government.Which is critically needed in the case of GEJ.They do sub standard but with specification and regulation even the west goes to them for quality and mass production.

5th Annual Town Hall Meeting Of The Lagos State Security Trust Fund

Nov 22, 2011 - I welcome you all very warmly to our 5th Annual Security Trust Fund meeting, to render account of our partnership on security, to highlight our successes and to share our challenges and suggest the options available to us as we consolidate on the building of a most strategic institution to maintain law and order.

Perhaps it is instructive to remind ourselves about how we got here.

When I assumed office in 2007, probably the biggest single challenge to the realization of our dreams was the problem posed by insecurity.

Not only were lives being lost to crime on an almost daily basis in traffic, bank robberies and home invasions, our law enforcement personnel were neither equipped to fight crime nor were they motivated to do so.

There were very few small businesses that operated after 7pm because our State was always in darkness after dusk.

As discouraging as this was for business and employment, it was sadly the perfect environment for crime to thrive.

I stand before you very proudly to assert that we have overcome many of these challenges.

The road to progress has not been easy. It has demanded thousands of hours of hard work which we have gladly given. We have been greatly inspired by your support and sense of community in joining us to fight crime and preserve law and order.

Our night life and economy is getting robust by the day and providing jobs for young people and investors in entertainment and hospitality.

Many more small businesses are opening and new hotels, restaurants, night clubs and cafes are springing up with the promise of more to come.

The increasing opportunities for business and employment and a growing economy are the biggest weapons for crime prevention.

We have complemented this by lighting up many streets of Lagos with power provided by diesel fired generators, and our policemen are better equipped to respond because they now have patrol vehicles and armored personnel carriers to fight crime.

Keeping them on the road to protect all of us requires hundreds of thousands of liters of petrol, diesel and other logistics.

We are paying them an improved monthly allowance and those at the vanguard of responding to violent crimes now have a group life and accident insurance coverage.

All of you signed up and resolved to make security everybody's business.

Our rallying point was the Security Trust Fund law which was the first legislation passed by our dynamic and forward looking House of Assembly under my tenure as Governor.

The support and enthusiasm with which all of you embraced the initiative for voluntary contribution to fund security is humbling for our Government.

We are truly appreciative and owe a debt of gratitude to many people especially our legislators, my colleagues in the State Executive Council and many bank executives, leaders of business and private citizens.

Let me publicly acknowledge what I think was the most touching contribution, not for its size but for its source. It came from school children who decided to support this Fund from their pocket money.

While it will be invidious of me to personally mention all of you. I must crave your indulgence to salute and acknowledge some individuals who were the champions and midwives of the idea.

Alhaji Musiliu Smith Retired Inspector General of Police, Mr. Jim Ovia, Mrs. Cecelia Ibru, Mr. Jacob Ajekigbe, Mr. Aigboje Imokhuede, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Mr. Femi Otedola.

Special mention must be made of all members of the State Security Council and members of the Trust Fund, but particularly the Chairman, Mr. Remi Makanjuola, who apart from making personal and corporate donation, not only agreed to serve as Chairman, but also a mobilizer of funds.

Our successes have brought on bigger challenges. Several thousands of Nigerians have moved to Lagos simply because we are safer.

The capacity we installed in 2007 has therefore become stretched.

The vehicles have aged and need to be replaced. The demands are new, the methods of the criminals are changing and they are investing in their business in order to put our own lives and businesses at risk.

This is the significance of this meeting. For us to demonstrate that we can sustain and maintain what we have built.

This year's meeting challenges the resolve we made in 2007, and calls upon us to acknowledge that crime is a threat to our businesses and our lives.

It is a meeting not just to render account to you, but to invite you to commit to a renewed investment to out-spend, out-think, out-manouver and defeat those who threaten us by their pursuit of illicit undertakings.

Quite apart from the regular payment of allowances, provision of vehicles, fueling of vehicles, maintenance and replacement of vehicles every year since 2007, let me acquaint you with a summary of equipment we have provided in year 2011 alone.

These include 10 (Ten) Armored Personnel Carriers bringing our current fleet to a total of 30; 60 (Sixty) high power motor-bikes; 50 (Fifty) patrol vehicles and 6 (Six) boats.

We have also secured approval for 5 (Five) new Area Commands which we intend to build starting from year 2012.

We hope that from this meeting, we will raise enough money to provide 500 (Five Hundred) more vehicles, 200 (Two Hundred) more patrol bikes and at least 20 (Twenty) more armored personnel carriers.

Before I conclude, let me state very categorically that security of lives and the protection of property is our primary responsibility as your representatives in Government.

Our invitation to you in 2007, the composition of the membership of the Trust Fund and our yearly meetings are the clearest indications of our commitment to the participatory nature of our democracy.

Our recourse to you today, is an acknowledgment of impact and success that your participation brought about at the time of an imminent security crisis.

Our biggest challenge today is to elicit a similar or better response from you today at a time when things have improved, so that we can act pro-actively rather than re-actively as we did 4 (Four) years ago.

Your voluntary contributions from today by way of cash, vehicles, and provision of fuel or any service that will improve our capacity will be the strongest possible statement we all can make about our determination to secure and protect the place we all call home.

I thank you for your partnership, as I await your response to this renewed call to put your money as they say, where your interests lie.

Governor of Lagos State

Russia and China are making significant gains right now economically and they have seen the importance of there military influence around there sphere of control. It is countries like USA that are scaling down there military development because of the recession and previously fought wars.Russia and china,Also places like India are raising steadily in arms buildup and control.Russia is becoming a significant power player now than ever. She was looked down upon think she had gone scrap until she sampled with Georgia and expel the European influence in Ukraine.Extending her naval base lease in Ukraine.
Russia has also activated her long ranger nuclear bombers and for a long time had not flown on routine strategic flights.Last they were on patrol along Europe.Russia is now upgrading her Naval fleets to match other world powers in there area of maritime dominance. Her air-force is sound, air defense is good and her ground army is sound,Intelligence and satellite abilities are sound. Her deficiency is only Naval and some level of corruption. The world never believed they still had technological ratings until they yanked Georgia of the internet while the war lasted. The last i checked hackers were scrambling to know just how they did that.Prompting other countries to invest in cyber warfare.
Russia is still strong and has started revamping her arsenals and defense strategy. The current post simply means they are analyzing the current trends to develop there deterrence and counter abilities.
My brother ND struggle was not genuine at all.

^^^^Doubt if you have visited the ND.you think people like to arm and die?The ND waters are contaminated you could see the pollutants floating on the water. The last i watched pollution of the Ozone,ND in Nigeria after Russia was blasting hot from satellite images capture of gs flaring. It's a fact the ND is neglected even if they reacted negatively period. That apart we have alot of issues flying here and there unattended to until they also become Boko haram or MEND like before government go listen.

If the people clapped for Boko haram for killing or assulting Police or military men in the north, it is perfectly understanable, In fact just 2 weeks ago in Maiduguri, 100 muslims were killed by soilder. This people were praying in the mosque before the soliders came and kill them the the attempt to fight Boko haram

^^^^^Sad and condemnable but what can i say when security fails to serve and protect the people from danger.

The ND "struggle" was a struggle by some few cabals in the ND region ecspecially edwin clark to make an Ijaw majority aka South south man the President.

It was a well staged cause, and done according to plan. Lets ask ourselves this questions

1. How did the so called ND militant get those weapons ?

2. How did Boko haram get those weapons ?

Do you know that in the last election, the Sultan among other northern leaders suppoted GEJ for the presidency, I mean how did GEJ get 40% in Sokoto ?

to answer your question, you need to look at the previous administration and where militancy begun aka OBJ era.

MEND was created for power to remain in the South, just like OPC

Boko haram does not favour northern interest but only deceive the people we were clapping for them. Boko haram has killed more northern MEN than any single group before. It is all for political power but they have sweep up sentiments of US the people to support them as a form of anti-police force

^^^^Not a fair perspective of the current situation. The same type populace is held in both case by armed groups. The same political party wrangling caused the problem. The same kind of misconception kept the flames burning.Today as a Northerner i don't know what Boko haram wants and why they choose to victimize the innocent regardless. The media and some people want to make it look like they strictly target a particular people,i say you are wrong there target even in Damaturu caused significant Northern Muslim death.Since the sentiment is there people prefer to deny the Muslim mourns and assume it is pretending.Alot of FGN and state government staff, which when Identified did get gunned down regardless of faith.I can't find a place to define Boko haram struggle honestly. There demands are ridiculous and there actions unthinkable.
It beats me that some people are being bias here. The security in Nigeria in so many ways have failed to build a bond between them and the community. We are only loving them because they can frame you, accuse, violate your right and mess you up with no one to call for help.In a case where another force marches them alot of us just cheer openly or in our hearts. The news is also not clear. Is it that the people simply watched the incident and cheered or were viewing a different thing here, the football matchhuh
What ever the reasons, times without number in Nigeria people have supported or cheered where the security is victimized by an anti-government group or there fellow operatives. The people are not to blame. The British police have created a bond with the community so much they rely on the community as for information and sheer support. Can the police sermon the people for help and they respond?Last i witnessed the simple demonstration over the air-tel troubles in Abuja.when the police arrived one officer was upset and complaining bitterly that they had no order to engage the crowd violently for a hand full of peaceful protesters.Plain silly.
You can't even reason with a policeman or security operative on duty. They are like trained to victimize the innocent in Nigeria and let criminality prevail.Do you know before the Militancy they always enjoyed the floor of being untouchables. Its sad the table are turning and they now the people who they have denied sleep and support. Now they have a monster greater than them and they are playing,i am doing it for you. They better start by apologizing, orientation,PR and building a strong bond that will make people even vote a uniform man over boko haram or MEND.They must define and implement "the police is your friend" to the later.
@alj harem
You are definitely wrong to dispute or say the ND people didn't support the MEND militia.Dokubo and rest of them have come out categorically to spell it out they got funding and support from the communities.
Who were honestly deprived without doubt. My point is despite the reasons for there struggle it was obvious they had significant support and people praised, where they targeted security personnel.Especially does of the Northern extract. They helped them without doubt and saw it as a struggle to kill northern military personnel.I tell you this with facts from even the people that serve there.I have a brother that is in the military and serves in the ND.I have also being sent to work there and i have spoken with some of the security men about the environment. You don't know or have a clue.I still maintain the ND struggle is genuine and the likes of my brother only follow orders. They may not like being there but have no choice than to obey.
