Dear Recruiters, Please Be Kind!!!

A few weeks back, I interviewed a #candidate for an urgent vacancy that needed to be closed. I had shortlisted her based on her work experience and qualifications, and I intended to find out about her more during the interview. When I spoke with her on the phone before the date of the interview, she sounded so confident and very well-spoken.

Finally, on the day of the virtual interview, I was so excited to chat with her and when we eventually started the interview, all my high hopes crashed just a few minutes into it. Why? What happened? You might want to ask, well I wasn't impressed at all because she was so nervous! She kept mixing up her words and breathing heavily which made it difficult to concentrate on her answers. I knew it was because she was anxious, and for me to get the best out of her, I had to tweak things.

I told her to stop, and I said this to her:

"Hi (insert name) I want you to please be really free with me. I don't eat or bite, I just want to get to know you better, so I want you to see me as a friend okay? I know you are very nervous right now, but I need you to understand that you were shortlisted for this position because you are qualified for it okay? So begin to see yourself as that."

I asked her to exhale three times after the pep talk, and we started the interview from the beginning, and this time around it was so good. She answered all the questions I asked her confidently and thanked me profusely for not giving up on her when we were done.

Another #recruiter might have dismissed her as being incompetent, thereby losing out on a great talent, but I decided not to give up on her, and she in turn didn't disappoint.

Dear #recruiters , please let's always endeavor to spread love and kindness everywhere. Stop acting like a mini-god and speak to your candidates condescendingly. Always be quick to reassure them and make them feel comfortable whenever they begin to get nervous. You can only get the best out of your candidates based on how you relate with them. Let them have an amazing #candidateexperience . This contributes immensely to your Employer Branding, because you are an extension of whatever company you work for as a #recruiter

I challenge us today to be more empathetic and kinder!!!

Meanwhile as at yesterday Labour Party has no evidence to present to the Presidential Tribunal. Obi claiming he won on TV will be used by INEC and the APC to destroy LP.

Obi later saying he's not challenging the winner but the process on Arise TV is another dent on his legal case...

All in all Obi will loose again
