zboyd: Labor Day in the States is just around the corner, replete with parades, barbeques and a day off work for some lucky Americans.

Giving honor to the day, a roving reporter on the streets of Dallas, Texas asked passersby "Why Are You Proud To Be American?"

Believe it or not, most people were stumped by the question- some struggled to answer- others just smiled, shook their heads and quickly walked away.

But what of YOU?

If you're a typical Nigerian then you've spent an inordinate amount of time complaining about Nigeria and other Nigerians.

At the same time, most Nigerians are fiercely proud of their country and are proud to be Nigerian.

But...what do you think makes Nigeria and Nigerians so special?

Why are YOU proud to be Nigerian?
You have made an erroneous assumption thus technically disqualifying me from answering your question correctly, but i will still go ahead. I AM NOT PROUD TO BE A NIGERIAN. I regret being a Nigerian. God owes me an explanation for creating amongst a people that are so corrupt, wasteful, backward thinking, so negatively inclined that more than 50 years after independence, we have learnt the first step towards getting anything right. I REGRET being a Nigerian.

I AM HAPPY AND PROUD to be a BIAFRAN

prince3009: Lol. i understand your anger my friend but to tell you the truth, even though it is very painful and demeaning for a woman to raise her hand against you as a man, if you react or hit back, the society will still blame you and all will be ringing on your ears are words like, "But you should have not beat her back", "You should have reported to her husband rather than hitting back! Haba!!...Are you not a man?" In the police station (because she or her husband/family members must go to report), people will say, look at that man who beat a married woman without even taking recourse to the fact that she slapped you first. The society is just wired that way where women are being protected and the men seen as bullies no matter what.

Sadly, In our society, When a woman throws shyte at a man and he just cleans it and keeps quiet, HE IS SEEN AS A MAN INDEED but when he throws shyte back, HE IS IMMATURE AND CHILDISH. It's so sad! sad
I see your point and feel your pain. You cannot win a woman in a fight. If she beats you, you are a wimp. If you beat her, you are abusive. Good for them though until the slap me. But you are dead on point.

prince3009: Just recently, my boss' secretary slapped me during a slight argument in the office. She was this kind of person who boasted about her past exploits in breaking men's head with bottles and punching them at any slightest provocation. I didn't react as most men would have done. I just walked away not because she was a married woman but because of the respect I have for my boss and the fact that I wanted to make her pay dearly for it. I simply put up a petition against her to the Dept of Establishment who oversees recruitment and staff training and she was almost dismissed! I had to plead with them not to dismiss her as I didn't want to be responsible for her retrenchment and after much entreaties by other colleagues, they brought down her punishment to a query. At least next time before she raises up her hand to slap a man, she would think twice even if it were to be a male child.

My advice to men out there is that when a woman abuses you both physically and verbally, don't resort to violence which is usually the next impulse. Seek help and assistance with the appropriate authorities rather than shy away because of your ego and pone in silence. Domestic abuse and violence against men is real and has adverse effects on a man just as it it for a woman if turned the other way round.
Bros, ask that lady to come and slap me. She will be terminated from the hospital bed as her services will no longer be required upon discharge from the hospital. I will beat her till she is crippled and then i will break her right hand (including the index finger) or the left if she is lefthanded. I will not bother to resign. It is people like you that encourage these girls and ladies to act tough. It would have been the last time in her life that she would have had the hand to slap anybody whether a man or woman. Now i have started vexing. Give me her number

lastpage: Calm Down, my friend.
You have made a lot of "suppositions' up there? probably you have read very "bad history" but even at that, history is full of bad thing sthat happened in the PAST, that is why it is called History and not Science, which is 'forward thinking'.

By highlighting my first post, l am already according 'recognition' to the Igbo extraction of our gallant Nigerian Army and to all of them in general, from which ever tribe.
Whether you agree with that or not, is your own cup of Tea.

By the way, History was written down for a reason, ...that we may NOT forget the past.
But ..and this is a big BUT, ... it was written down not just so that we dont forget but so that we can ALL LEARN FROM IT!

Is it only this hatred, distrust, bigotry and negative-mindedness that you learnt from your own history? Relax, life is not supposed to be 'iron and steel'.

My own "history" teaches me to forgive and forget those who offend me, teaches me that we might be different and we might not agree on some things but it does not make us enemies! It also teaches me to take people on 'face-value" and to address each person "as they conduct and present themselves" to me, irrespective of whether they are from my village or across the Niger or of a different religion.

Its always worked for me! We can yab ourselves today and be great friends the next minute!!
No Permanent Enemies, ......everything is based on "individual Values and Policies".

I have come to understand that just as much as Igbo (some) dislike Yorubas, within the Nigerian context, they have more in common with them, than with anyone else! But there is still "fear of the past, which leads to distrust in the future".
Difficult to admit but good self examination would reveal its really accurate judging by how a some Igbos who initially resented me because l am Yoruba, have become my best buddies afterwards.
Its called "confidence-building", show others they have nothing to worry about and they can relax as far as you are concerned... and interract with them based solely on what they bring to the table

BTW, the best way to make everyone forget about something is to stop raising it up at every opportunity!

Anyway, l digress!

Lastpage!
It is confusing, to say the least. Reason? Some of my best friends are Yorubas, i have dated and still have some of the ladies as friends. That explains in simple terms my attitude to life which is to treat each one as they deserve. having said that, i am just an individual, and the wider conception of the tribes under consideration is what is the real issue. The Igbo will never trust the Yoruba and vice versa at the global level. No matter what you preach, the scars of years past have only continued to fester. Read through the comments of people from both sides of the divide in this forum you will then understand that your views and stance, no matter how honourable and well intended is still seen as ignoble in the views of many here present.

I stand to be corrected about my earlier 'suppositions' that the average Igbo in the Northern enclave fighting for a non-existent fatherland will be forgotten as soon as the war is won and lost. Your views are yours and i respect them but it does not in the least detract from reality which is what we feel and touch everyday.

It is also instructive that it is not just the Yoruba man that has set himself aside as an enemy of the 'vanquished' Igbo Biafran. Even the man from Otuoke had his kinsmen passively fighting against the Biafran 'effrontery' by acting as saboteurs. Ken Saro Wiwa in his book, 'Sunset at Dawn' (i am sorry if i got the title wrong) justified rowing across the murky ijaw creeks to pass information to the Federal Troops and how he finally won their interest and all. In truth, when he was hung by the same Federal side that peddled information for while fighting for the same thing Ojukwu sought to save for our collective commonwealth, I had no pity for him. I recall i was at the Goethe Institute watching a certain documentary when news of him being 'guilotened' came through. Quite a number of the other people dropped a tear or two. I recall telling those closest to me that his death was long in coming. My point? He never, as an individual, saw that what he did during the secession era was wrong. Today, Neither the Hausa man, nor the Yoruba man believe that emasculating the Biafran struggle was an error. You saying it as an individual does not represent the wider view of the people. And here is where history has not and will never serve the purpose for which you have outlined in your last post eliciting my current response. We will never learn from the benefit of history when we deliberately close our eyes to the 'take-aways' that the past event is supposed to help us with.

Last Page, i have no particular grouse with you or a single Yoruba man, perhaps we as today's nigerians would have acted differently, but the injustice, killings and degradations of those years will not go away, they can never be wished away. There was a 'Truth Commission' (or something to that effect in SA), the whole idea was to deal with past injustices, get people to purge their minds of weighty 'crimes' committed and receive a 'notion' of forgiveness. It is not about the Naira and Kobo, for me, it is the admission that people were unjustly killed, maimed and thereafter maligned till date.

My last prayer to Gowon has always remained the same. may he live long into the future to continue to see the benefit of his war of attrition against the Igbos. Plateau people who led the surge into the Igbo heartland will continue to live with their Fulani friends who will in turn continue to massacre them in their numbers. Bro, we are no where near break of dawn yet.

Long live BH.

When the war is finally won (if and when that happens), you will NEVER stop calling those 'so called soldiers of igbo extraction' names. You will always remember they tried to secede and by forming Biafra, remain condemned till eternity. Y'all make it sound like self determination is a crime against humanity for which all igbos must suffer forever. You will not accord them any recognition. Having said that, any igbo who is fighting for the emancipation of the North is doing that at his own peril. I will neither empathize with him or sympathize with his people when the expected happens. As a good student of history, it has become obvious to me that selfishness is the way to go in this contraption called Nigeria. There was a country, but it is no more. For me it is 'to your tents oh Israel'.

That teaching is wrong. I have severally turned down the offer, as in severally. And from different ladies. So because we are men, we must be in the mood all time everyday? Some teaching indeed.

Anyways, i hardly ever request for it, we end up having a mutual desire for it and it happens, at least almost always.

If it is to apply the use of Russian Kalashnikovs and bring in bombers to straff and level out villages and kill innocent and harmless old men, women and children, they will all become gallant. 1966-1970 has come back to roost. Apply the Nigerian valour that was used against the Biafran enclave to dislodge the BH. Who said that the military cannot use the same maximum force it used against Biafra to destabilize and decapitate BH? I have no sympathy for anyone up there, including GEJ, Borno State or BH. They are all the same to me. They brazenly killed innocent, helpless and hapless women, men and children. It is not yet time for reckoning, indeed it is not yet morning on creation day. I expect to be called names, but it won't change my views and do not come and quote me and then remind me it is an even that happened 40 years ago, No. There has been no restitution, no apologies, nothing whatsoever. Let the rampaging continue, the blood of over 3 million MURDERED Biafrans calling for reprissals. God no be small pikin....

....And what happened at Odi?.....

Indeed some animals are more equal than others and that explains why there will be more deaths on the side of the military......

There is nothing wrong with fishermen, sailors, canoe-makers or even zoologists to embrace the bottle - but when in the presence of 7 people and you are the only one doing the drinking - it attracts attention and make it seem you are the only one loving or embracing the bottle the most.

I may be wrong on the volume of love (but I hope you are seeing what am seeing? grin )
If there is only one glass, then only one man can drink at a time. If seven pictures were shown of that gathering, we would see each man raising same glass at a point in time. It is not rocket science, and i am not a fan of the Otuoke man, or any other politifcian for that matter. I dont even know the political parties we have in Nigeria and who is where or representing what. It saves me a lot of stress.

SIRJENTLE: thanks for giving room for corrections.
I do not argue that it does not happen but not all places in Igbo land.
I am a confirm Igbo man and it does not happen in my community as am writing this.
Neither have i ever experienced it where i come from, I am proudly Arochukwu. I have uncles that died intestate, no one has ever harassed their wives or kids on grounds of properties that their husbands left behind. As a matter of fact, they are generally given options as to what they may wish to do to continue taking care of the family. Those educated and willing to work are helped to search out befitting jobs, those willing to trade or do some other forms of business are helped and encouraged. I have it on good authority that no wife that came into my extended family has left the family following the husband's demise. Their kids automatically become children to be taken care of by the family and this is carefully worked out such that fees and upkeep continuous to run seamlessly. There never has been a drop out from school because of death in the family.

It will be helpful when people stop generalizing or relying on what they read, watch or hear to stigmatize everyone from a particular clime.

I do not encourage anyone to buy a car used in Nigeria, especially in lagos, but there are extenuating circumstances. I once bought a Lagos used Nissan Bluebird. The owner lived in 1004 flats and worked at Oceanic Bank on Ozumba Mbadiwe. He was a conc. born again, so i knew he was not doing VI-Mainland runs for parties. Years after i bought the car, my mechanic kept reminding me that if i ever needed to sell the car, he was more than willing to buy. I eventually gave it out as a gift to my cousin upon graduation. He is still using the car more than 4 years after.

My point is, you may be able to get a decently used Nigerian car but check the history of the car and the owner very well, otherwise, a tokunbo is still far better.

All the best in your search.
