When he was building the ark.

Even 1 pet 4:6 makes it further clear "and that is why the good news was preached to the dead...."

How does verse 20 say those spirits were the spirit of the dead??

You are the one who needs to read that verse with a non-purgatory eye to see that those spirits never were persons who once lived and died,and there souls sent to prison.....
