Education / Re: Yobe State Has Zero Cut Off Mark For Federal School Entrance by initiator(m): 1:35pm On Jan 03, 2013
I can see the point that aribisala and co are making (save for his Achebe mentality distraction). However they fail to see the underlying problem with the quotas: that is ingraining a culture of privilaedge that does no service to the common good. Whoever or whichever tribe is granted concession over merit grows to expect that same priviledge all their life. I agree affirmative action is good at some point to help pull "disadvantaged groups," it must not be allowed to play for too long so it does not become a culture. A child in Kebbi should slug it out with one from Anambra.

The fellow mentioned the worldcup being a diverse assemblage despite the fact that europe, one of the smallest continents still gets more teams than asia and africa that are bigger. So there should be a merit list irrespective of states and then a quota list that is less. And I think this shouldn't last long. Instead i would support the federal govt funding states that are more disadvantaged at the primary level since that is the foundation of education anyway.

Wow coldplay to me can do no wrong. I have everything of theirs. Especially love Talk, Rush of blood to the head, amsterdam, politik, purple hill. Also love Oasis (their classics should be studied in school of rock lol). Then am huge on Florence and the machine. Have y'all noticed British bands are so good?
Then Nivarna's like teen spirit is the stuff of imortality. U2, what more can I say? In naija apart from those Nepa bring the light guys I've not heard much cool stuff save for some of Bez's stuff that's kinda alternative.
cheers peeps!

The problem is that these Nigerian plants don't use coal for their production.
That makes their costs too high.

That is the power of sensation. If she is worth $3billion then how much is Danjuma who has stake in an offshore block (OML 130) that does almost 200,000 barrels worth?
Please sensational journalists that know nothing about oil exploration should shut the hell up.

The figures are not actual. Her husband is the chairman of the block while her four sons are directors. The company is a family-held venture.

Nigeria placed 6th, just behind Russia and one step ahead of the Philippines. Internet usage grew by 15 percent year on year, and internet penetration of the population now stands at 30 percent. It is estimated that there are currently 48 million internet users in the country.

There's a thin line between street culture

Family / Re: No Child After Marriage: How Long Can You Wait? by initiator(m): 2:16pm On Nov 22, 2012
The predominant attitude to infertility in Nigeria is one of shame and helplessness within the background of a culture that places a high premium on childbearing.

Let us be straight about what infertility is: The inability of a couple to conceive despite one year of regular unprotected intercourse in women under the age of 35, and six months in women older than 35.

With our population in excess of 150 million people the rates of primary (when a couple has never achieved pregnancy) and secondary (a couple who have been pregnant previously but are no longer able to conceive) infertility estimated together affect about 30 percent of our married couples. 1 in 4 couples need assisted reproduction.

Such couples can explore IVF treatment which in simple terms is, the fusion of the egg from the woman with the sperm from the man outside the body which should then result in the formation of an embryo (the developmental stages of a baby) following fertilisation. The embryo is subsequently transferred into the uterus of the woman, where under the right conditions; it should implant and develop into a healthy pregnancy.

You can check up more on www.thebridgeclinic.com They were the first in Nigeria and do it so damn well.

Travel / Re: A Thread For Travel Enthusiasts! by initiator(m): 3:46pm On Apr 11, 2012
Wow, nice thread.

I am a travel junky mostly in my imagination but have not travelled outside Africa.
I have just done Ghana, Cote d'ivoire, Benin and South African.

I travelled to Ghana from Lagos by road and it just confirmed my theory that the two things
that make a good trip is good company and good camera. Night and beach life in cotonou was
rather interesting. At a point the music slows and couples get into some romantic tango. It
seemed rather old-fashioned to me but interestign all the same. Me and my colleagues had a
good laugh hearing one of the cotonou girls singing one of Brandy's songs. Was also amazed
by the Nigerian music influence. Ghana and Cote d'ivoire didnt give me much other than
Lagos-type traffic.

Cape town was beautiful. Visited mandela's jail and their waterfront. It was summer and there
were quite a lotta people. Night life was varied but didnt really did the house music
(I like their local music though)and I didn't have great company.

Also visited Obudu Cattle ranch in Calabar twice and it presented one of the best views I've seen
in this country.

The best airline for me has to be emirate (from accra to abidjan). Their air hostesses are awesome.
I loved SAA for the free floww of wine.

My next stop is actually Tanzania and Kenya - want to do Mount kilimanjaro and mount kenya. That is
some adrenalin to take me for years.

Business / Re: Ghana's Economy Is The Fastest Growing In The World - Economy Watch by initiator(m): 6:24pm On Feb 20, 2012
I pity Ghana. Oil money messes economies up, save sophisticated ones like Norway or royalties in the middle east.
Begore their legislators would be grappling with budgets far far less than Rivers or Lagos (these two states have
annual budgets close to $4billion each). But when Ghana's government starts to grappple with $5billion budgets you
go fear kleptocracy cos everybody eye go open and a terrible feeling of entitlement would creep in.

Ghana's economy is small and with oil exploration (it takes $100million to drill one exploration well), their GDP is bound
to go up. But unless they build refineries and local capacity, that sector would not produce enough jobs.

So this news is relative.

Properties / Re: Is The New Lagos Tenancy Law Working? by initiator(m): 11:38am On Nov 02, 2011
Most landlords, I gather, have exploited the law by hiking the amount to be paid for one year's rent. They now charge the same money of 2 years for one year. How can you explain what I learnt that a 3 bedroom in yaba is going for 750k.

But hey, I thought South Africa voted Karen the last time she was up. So why the fuss? I want an entertaining chap till the very last day and the dude fits it. Forget all that - what will affect Karen'd chances - she would still get the dollars irrespective. Just that our hearts would pump a bit more, and hey, that doesn't hurt ehn.

I wonder why you peeps are over-calculating the country alliance thing too much: there you had Angola who even ditched their country rep to save Karen when they were all up. It goes to show that people are more given to charismatic characters than feeble once ireespective of country. And for The Amaka to suggest that voting Luclay is dumb, i think is as a result of her head hurting, lol. I think the finals should be as tough and intriguing as it could be. Let all the strong characters slug it out - hte harder the fight, the greater the glory - no cheap escapes please. Luclay is an interesting character, somewhat rebellious and deserves to be at the final - I even tip him to win with Karen - so I root for him.
TV/Movies / Re: Big Brother Amplified (The Official Thread of BBA 6) by initiator(m): 6:42am On Jul 19, 2011
Watching Karen's reaction to Mumba's eviction was gripping television - I tell ya. This week we just have to give it to Luclay. The house would be less without him. Hanni would make a nice friend but not necessarily nice televion.
TV/Movies / Re: Big Brother Amplified (The Official Thread of BBA 6) by initiator(m): 12:54pm On Jul 18, 2011
This would be a tough one for Vina - wether to justify the swap of her best friend in the house or her countrymate. I don't envy her but I would hope she swaps Karen for Sharon O so that Luclay gets a better chance.
