CareerWhy Bsc And HND Are Not Equivalent by ishmael(op): 4:07pm On Jul 04, 2012
For those who are of the opinion that the Bsc is better than the HND, can we get good and meaningful reason(s) based on the course curricula for both uni and poly in nigeria using 2 courses-Accountancy and Statistics as our case studies why you feel the HND is inferior to the Bsc. Both Accounting and Statistics are courses offered in nigerian universities and polytechnics.
BusinessRe: Prepaid Nigeria Ltd - Recharge Card Printing Business Is Scam by ishmael(m): 3:32pm On Jul 04, 2012
nairawall: The Prepaid Nigeria GSM Card printing activities is scam.

I am trying to get somebody in Lagos to verify if truly the office they listed on their letter is real.

This is the address:
Pent house,5th floor 6 New Isheri road Ikeja, lagos

After making payment to Prepaid Nigeria, they keep coming up with all manner of excuses and this has been weeks. I am very convinced my N50k is gone. This is the account number they use in running this scam:

Ecobank( 0501042140) Okorie Vincent C
Telephone Number: 07084417543.

Those about doing business with this company should be careful.
Why not go to any Eco Bank close to u and make a complain? They may help u track them. Regards.

Hope to see u in Abuja. Abuja is a nice place to hussle too like Lagos.

Evagreenfields: awww thanks tho. maybe one of these days, it might happen.
Do u live in Abuja? Sometimes i get to provide statistical support for some researchers and students in Abuja. I sometimes provide stats packages training too. I could just show u what we do with data using softwares like spss, minitab, etc.

Ufeolorun: Not belittling the profession,really.
You are actually right sha. One does not need a certification to become a data analyst; some few months training only would be ok for those that are fast learners. But statistical data analysis is beyond that. U need training on statistical methods, analysis, hypothesis testing, and interpretation of statistical analysis results.

Any how you like it sha. If u were in Abuja I would have shown u some aspects of these practically.

CareerRe: Ican Or Data Analysis/mgt by ishmael(m): 2:11pm On Jul 01, 2012
Ufeolorun: Anyone could be a data analyst except you looking for certification. I feel you don't need to go through the conventional schooling process to become a data analyst, just 1or 2 months workshop or training, books on data analysis and good excel/spreedsheet skill can can equip you with the right skills to do data

You are better of with ican cos obviously you can't become chartered in 2 or 3months and all chartered accountants are expected to know how to analyse data,be it financial or non-financial.
Robust data analysis is beyond using excel, bros.

2sexy: Bsc or no Bsc... Who cares? I am a proud poly Grad and I will make more money in this world than most of my Bsc holders.

Does Nigeria really care about that? Where is the design, the machine, the technology, the development? Nigeria does not give a f***k who you are or where you come from.

I remember watching on AM Express a few years ago where a group of 3 UNILAG students built an hovercraft and it worked so well. During interview, the leader of the group said he has been on the project since year 1 but where are those guys today? Only God knows.

At my school in PTI, one mechanical engineering student built a one man helicopter, where is he today? Another guy in the electrical department designed and built a device that can be used lock your car even if the car was stolen and taken to Ghana, it wouldn't start.

Who cares about you? My advice to all HND holders is this, if you know your capacity and that you are very good, why worry yourself about what people think about your qualification or cert.? Albert E., Isaac Newton, Henry Ford and many more who changed the world didn't have as much education as most of us, but they did changed the way people value them. But then, we have to be in a place where the system are functioning and the basic infrastructure are available. That's why I will leave this country come 2013 / 2014. Over there you are more valued than in your own country.

Nah. . . Bsc holders can continue claim superiority, I don't give a damn. What I care about is my financial capacity, investments and businesses in the next 10-20 years from now.
Good talk.

pls do. It will really keep you busy, and like i said u may be lucky to work with a team of UN researchers or get to carry out a political survey for a politician who may want to know his chances of winning an election, or to have an insight of how electorates feel about his performance. U can market ur survey ideas to them, and with God they will give u an opportunity to work for them, paying u handsomely.
CareerRe: Ican Or Data Analysis/mgt by ishmael(m): 8:01am On Jul 01, 2012
Data analysis/mgt is good for u since u have engineering background, but at the same time it may not be too good for u since engineers in nigeria do not go into R&D in engineering where such services wud have been needed. ICAN is better if u can endure starting from foundation level. But it pays u better at the end.

crackhouse: is a car designer and a mechanic the same?. When i say car designer i mean the person that did the schematics design. Knowing the practicals without theory is like being clueless of the whole thing cos u don't know what happens internally.
Have u ever thought that knowing how to design without knowing how to implement is also rubbish? If it's that easy why not design and implement at the same time? Can a designed car or prototype work if it is not fully worked on and implemented? Anyway, what have the nigerian engineers ever designed for us? Bicycle? Car? Bridge? Road? We are yet to see ur designs.
EducationRe: NUC Suspends Part-time Programmes In Varsities by ishmael(m): 8:51am On Jun 30, 2012
If students and lecturers could protest because of a change in the name of their school, i encourage all part time students to stand up, organise themselves and do a peaceful protest in places like abuja and lagos, occupying ministry of education, national assembly, state secretariat in Alausa, and NUC building. Even developed countries with universities that make first hundred best in the world run not only part time but online and distance learning programs. NUC themselves should be checked, they are not doing well in terms of ensuring quality education for nigerian universities through curricula review and development.
CareerRe: What Is The Hnd Equivalent In Usa by ishmael(m):
Some people see HND certificate in nigeria as an ordinary paper. The truth is that the total credit accrued in the nigerian HND is greater than or equal to that of a Bsc. But to be on a safer side go for a Bsc program.
CareerRe: B.sc In Mathematics by ishmael(m): 2:18pm On Jun 29, 2012
Evagreenfields: ^^ thank you
I will also advice you try and arm urself with working knowledge of stats and econometrics packages like spss, minitab, eviews, sas, stata, etc. With good working knowledge of these u will be able to provide support for researchers in the form of questionnaire design, sample size determination, data collection, data analysis, interpretation of analyses results, etc. on economic surveys, social surveys, market surveys, scientific researches, etc. You can start by providing statistical support for masters students (even Bsc) in ur alma mater, and they will pay u for such services. You can begin ur networking from there; who knows, u could work for people who would really like ur work and decide to recommend u to people who handle big time projects like UN survey projects, who may consult u to support them execute such projects.

Thanks for the advice. It might be easy for you to say so because u have probably gathered the necessary experience(s), expertise and networking required to do that. I'm kinda fresh out of school. Rounded off nysc in Feb.
U will surely get there with time. Just like u rightly said, u actually need to gather some experience, and with time u can stand on ur own as a consultant. Wish u the best.

I also love the assumption of intelligence because of mathematics. Even though I'm yet to get a job, I'm believing God it ll happen soon.
Why waiting to get a paid job? Why not use ur maths/econs skills to create a job or jobs for urself and others? I also read maths/stats, worked with a bank for 8 years, resigned and now self-employed as a statistician/data analyst. We conduct researches, market surveys, dissertation/project data analysis utilizing robust statistical softwares. If u are good in economic and business data collection and analyses then u are good to go. Regards.

olaezebala: Cause the only thing you can do as a Computer Engr in 9ja is replacement. Are they expected to build a motherboard or DVD rom e.t.c? They only need to know how to troubleshoot and find the faulty part of the system and go to computer village, buy the part and replace. Simple.
And they graduate to become Technicians and not Engineers. I doubt if we have Computer Engineers in nigeria, becos all i see most comp engr graduates do is fixing and replacement like people with A+ certification.

Hi,

Thank you for breaking things down. In my class, we did not do the highlighted (Fotran and Pascal) because we thought they were just too antidulivian. The others were learnt and known.

And we built algorithm and wrote codes and did many more of the things you stated..

Thanks though...

Christianity EtcRe: Should Women Be Silent In Churches? by ishmael(m): 4:18pm On Jun 24, 2012
EPOMA: What i don't understand about people with the bible is that they always give reasons to favour themselves, we can in as much quote other portions of the bible and say it was meant for galations, ephesian and so on. I think if we believed the bible was inspire by God,I don't think Paul made any mistake from what he said and it was for every believer
If some xtains can believe that this word of God is for the corinthian women alone or galatians or ephesians, then it means that no part of the Bible is meant for nigerians. Are we now saying that nigerian xtains should not believe in some part of the Bible again since no part of it was addressed or referred to nigerians? All letters of the new testament are meant for all today's christains whether greeks, jews, corinthians, ephesians, nigerians, togolese, americans, egyptians, arabians, etc. My brodas and sistas, the Bible is the word of God for all nations.
CareerRe: HND Holders: How Late Is Too Late For A BSc? by ishmael(m):
x-fire:
The basis of training BSc and HND graduates is quite different. We all know that. One should be more theoretically inclined while the other should be more practically inclined. For instance, the requirement for entry level in HND is 4 credits unlike BSc which is 5 credits. Also, there is also a wide gap in qualifications of lecturers in both institutions. For instance, I know corp members who taught in federal polytechnics and colleges of education during their service year. This can not happen in a university (at least I am yet to hear of any). Also, the universities boast of good number of PhD holders and professors. In most cases, lecturers in polytechnic have masters degree at the very best. In some cases, the only PhD holder some polytechnics can boast of is their rector!!!! Thus, eventhough the level of research in Nigeria is below par, in comparative analysis, you can't compare the level of research and academic breakthrough in a university with that of a polytechnic.
Apart from this, the brightest students go the universities, meaning that universities are generally more competitive. This increases your exposure Competition also has a way of fostering self-development.
Granted, the standard of education in Nigeria is low. But on a general note, an average federal university in Nigeria has a higher standard than an average federal polytechnic. Same for the state universities and polytechnic.
On a personal note, I have met VERY MANY good university graduates but I have interacted with only few sound polytechnic graduates. I think it all boils down to level of exposure, inferioriy complex and lack of self development.
My brother all these things u mentioned put together don't produce sound and competent uni graduates. What u are yet to discover is that the polytechnic curriculum is a refinement of that of the university, and that is why even with only Degree and Msc holders teaching in the polytechnics they still come out with the skills and experience industries need. Unlike the university graduates that come out with a certificate which he uses as an undue advantage over the poly graduates. The name "university" in nigeria is seen as the alpha and omega of higher institutions. Let's not forget that colleges & polytechnics in other countries also award degrees up to PhD level. Let all ur Lecturers from 100 level to 500 be profs for each course u take, it still does not make any significant impact than it has not made on the uni graduates. The uni curriculum is a set back. That of the poly is better technically. Because of the knowledge i got from the polytechnic the Bsc program was a walk over for me. Atleast i was among the top 5% in my class at the end of graduation. Thanx to my old poly notes that i used. I need to correct a wrong impression i discovered in u. Kaduna poly and YabaTech are bigger and better equipped than many federal universities. Only the 1st generation federal universities can compare themselves with them. You can find out this for urself by asking questions. ABU zaria which is one of the biggest, finest and well equipped in nigeria is slightly bigger and better than kadpoly, if u care to know. Regards my man.
CareerRe: HND Holders: How Late Is Too Late For A BSc? by ishmael(m):

Your write up shows an intense and deep bitterness and anger against Nigerian university graduates for no just cause. No hard feelings but a lot of bitter words vented against uni graduates by HND holders arise as a result of inferiority complex. In many cases and arguments that always arise, the poly graduates always start the debate. Even when I was serving, it was the HND holders that always (always and always) start the endless debate.
My own advice is that never you allow your degree, your class of degree, your type of degree, or course, etc to stop you from achieving your dreams. Look beyond the limitations and rise above it.
I have met many unsound uni graduates. I gave met many unsound poly graduates. I have met a few good HND holders. You, and not your certificate determine your future.
Mr man, u've not been following this thread the way i see it. I have studied in both institutions before. I have ND, HND from the polytechnic, and Bsc from the university. I'm talking from experience in my own field, not based on assumption. Little emphasis should be placed on certificates, and more shovld be placed on skills, knowledge and experience. This should be the yardstick for assessing graduates for further studies and employment. All i am saying here is that the undue advantage given to uni graduates should be stopped, and a level playing ground given to all graduates (HND & Bsc). More so, it is not possible that all HND holders are better than all Bsc holders, and all Bsc holders cannot be better than all HND holders. If we all believe this then we all will agree that equal opportunity should be given to all (both HND & Bsc) at all times. Finally inferiority complex does not lead to debates like this, rather a feeling of injustice against the HND holders make them cry out aloud, may be they could be heard and listened to. Inferiority complex can only be displayed by those who think they are not what they are suppose to be, may be because of insufficient training, skills and experience; and because they feel they are not competent enough. You also talked about showing hatred for uni graduates. That's very funny. I am also a uni graduate with good grades, so why should i show hatred to people that have what i have too? I'm only trying to be an unbiased and fair umpire. Please try and read my previous posts on this topic. Thanx for ur contributions.

I still put the blames on PDP, and GEJ is one of them. Why did they go into the agreement of rotational presidency ab'initio? Why did they not stick to it again? GEJ was threatened by these same northern politicians, and they meant their threats, and no body has been arrested ever since they started killing and bombing. GEJ should act as the C in C of the armed forces that he is by arresting those behind all these killings and bombings.
CareerRe: HND Holders: How Late Is Too Late For A BSc? by ishmael(m): 8:55am On Jun 24, 2012
What pains me most is the fact that this HND holders are made to do PGD before doing any Masters course. And it has never been recorded that they performed poorly in these programs. And yet some bias people will come out and condemn the poly HND graduates that they are not graduates. If they are not graduates why are they admitted into PGD programs? Is PGD not a postgraduate qualification that is higher than a bachelor's degree? Funny enough in some countries like UK, US, Canada, Ukraine, etc, they allow holders of nigerian HND with good grades to do a Masters program directly without having to do a PGD first. Nigerian government should begin to invest more on technical/technological education as that is what the country needs at the moment for positive growth and development. The university system has failed the nation in the areas of research & development as well as churnning out low quality degree holders who will always hide behind the certificate mentality thing to get a job.

CareerRe: HND Holders: How Late Is Too Late For A BSc? by ishmael(m):
tanimola22: Well, I definitely don't know of others elsewhere. I only know of myself and people that graduated from my undergrad class. That said, it is my delight to let you know that I took courses in Operations Research, Design of Experiment as well as in Statistical Methods and Concepts. The courses in Statistical Methods and Concepts almost completely cover all what there is to know in Statistical Computing and Industrial Statistics at undergrad level. Might I also let you know that I had lab (computing) sessions in Statistics during my undergraduate days and each student in my undergraduate class did a couple of graded projects using the knowledge gathered during the lab sessions. I guess this is what you call 'Stats Computing'.

Of course, taking into cognizance the very definition of humility, I have done both Econometrics and Financial Econometrics at a very high and intensely competitive level (competing with students from Asia, North America, Europe and Africa) and I can humbly tell you that the knowledge I needed to understand these courses was not beyond the scope of what I learned at undergraduate level Statistics in naija. The Econometrics covered at non-graduate level is only laughable, at least in my view. It is almost a repetition of material covered in Statistics and does not always include an extension to FGLS and GLS and a host of other very important analyses that are extremely useful in Economics and which I unfortunately cannot just begin to list now.

The truth of the matter is that, faculty (professors) vary across universities and some universities, even in that same naija, are just lucky to have a near perfect combination of faculty. I know this is not the case in general, but it is true. In addition to other very important knowledge that I acquired in Statistics while in naija, the combo of Lebesgue Measure Theory and Further Probability Theory that I was so very well exposed to, remains one of the best things that have happened to me as someone who studied in naija.

T22.
Let's get it straight. Stats method gives u the stats concept needed to do stats analyses. Its concepts are applied to solving problems in industrial stats and quality control. Topics in industrial stats includes process/product control, control chart techniques, acceptance sampling, inventory, etc. Statistical computing on the other hand is different from statistics lab practicals where u use packages such as spss, minitab, excel, etc for stats analysis. It is the interface between computer science and statistics. It teaches u how to develop ur own algorithm and programs to solve mathematical and statistical problems. It includes topics like random numbers & simulation, numerical methods of solving eqns, numerical linear algebra, kernel density functions, and algorithms & programming. In statistical computing, the algorithm and programming you do is mathematical using programming languages like Fortran, pascal, c++, matlab, sas, stata, etc.
