Well my mom doesn't really push me into her culture. I "idolize" my dad somewhat lol, so of course I embrace his culture more. But before I go to med school I want to go to nigeria with my mom. I've been using chinenyenwa a lilttle more than vivian though.
that's cool. I guess it's always easier to identify more with one side. |
ezeagu:I do agree with you on this. he has a strong symbolic power.
When and where did this happen, mrs fake historian?
http://books.google.com/books?id=xNdZnPXsKN4C&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false starting from page 115 (Chapter7: The Hunger Weapon) you can find other sources elsewhere too. |
H-Star, how is it like being part of both worlds? I know a family like that too but the kids identify more with Nigeria than with AA culture. they lived in nigeria for a while.
But college-educated, upwardly-mobile AAs are perfectly fine folk by me.
I never got along with them except on a superficial level. mostly cultural difference. |
the blame for the war goes both sides. Ojukwu let his people starve to death. he should have worked on a compromise or surrender. he even refused international food aid for his people and that says a lot. and to top it off, he then fled to cote d'voire to save his own head. anyways, he ran for president in 2003 I didn't hear of igbos turning out en mass to vote for him. he's not even anywhere close to being a political force in the east. This shows that even his people don't care too much for him except to pay lip service. and of course. every man is a hero. . . at his death. |
Besides, like I said, the magnitude of what Ojukwu did was the greatest. starting a Nigerian Civil war with 2 million dead, many more starved. That is a huge accomplishment. I don't think anyone in Nigeria can beat that. maybe Azikwe for being our first president. but he's long dead. Azikwe would receive more press nationwide. |
are all these people alive? |
I'm still bumping this song. Between this and watch the throne, it has been a good week musically for me
![]() should I be concerned? |
I thought about the same thing and came to the conclusion that Igbos don't have any other leader. So even though the guy hasn't done anything since the 60s (except to marry a popular beauty pageant), he is still being revered in igboland. he is famous for good reasons though. He did do something very big. although with very big nasty consequences that can still be felt today. |
Prejudice is probably the correct term to describe it. not resentment or hatred. Africans are not resentful of African Americans. We are prejudiced against them. We are also prejudiced against hispanics, asians, whites or African Americans for totally different reasons. and like I said, it's also vice versa. all those cultures including AAs have prejudices against us too. to quote, use the quote button above the text box when you are making a post. if you can see the smiley buttons, you should be able to see it. |
SAFO:I thought you were talking about Nigerians abroad. Nigerians abroad have access to the same amenities as African Americans. If there is any resentment at all, it is most likely caused by the fact that their kids (born abroad) can easily be influenced by African American culture. Many send their kids back home for about 6 yrs of secondary school (this is most likely what happened to you) to correct this if they feel it's going to be a problem or if they can afford to do so. also, non-black employers/neighbors/potential allies sometimes do not distinguish between AAs and African immigrants and so Africans feel that they are being unfairly judged. |
h-star u took my comment out of my mouth. yes. there is a cake on your profile. |
SAFO:they feel that they are a bad influence on their kids, they feel that they have destructive moral values. etc "despise" is a strong word though. I don't think Nigerians generally hate AA. maybe some. |
I don't think Nigerians despise African Americans any more than hispanic, white or carribean people despise African Americans. same is true vice versa.
im half black american & half nigerian(igbo). I can say nigerians despise the "ghetto" types.
you are beautiful. and happy bday ![]() |

Hertsnite:see how you are making a fool of yourself. why are these white people rioting. have you asked yourself that question? what a useless pig. and yes. your father is a white African! even whites in SA consider themselves to be South Africans. |
Why are people praising this guy. What is so heroic about him? He allowed 2 million people to die in a war that was obviously doomed for defeat and then flew out of the country when d worst came. That's not heroism that's selfishness and disregard for human life. I think if Biafra had been fruitful, he would have been a worse dictator than idi amin. |

Some people get pregnant by accident or for some other reasons. but whoever agrees to become pregnant to prove fertility is a DUNCE. |

the guy wants sex the woman wants money it's a 2 way street. @deniyor, you must be one of those naija guys abroad with oyinbo. In that case, the guy wants money and the woman wants sex. same thing. just switch the gender. |
Lagos State has a good record of computerising large scale processes/data. I don't think this will be an obstacle. The only reason I can see for them not introducing the tax yet, is political. It could prove very unpopular.
that makes sense |
MeandSum:there is no such thing as "anti-corruption" laws. you mean law enforcement. |
My guess is that we don't have a proper administrative infrastructure/system to successfully impose such a tax. I may be wrong though. |
unfortunately, the chance of the bill passing is 0% |
